If the basic one it suppose to appeal to core audiences then it would be black and come with the online discount.
Ultimately a core catered bundles would've been black, 32GB, the online premium discount, a pro controller and possibly get a third party game in there like ACIII or COD.
This sounds like they just want to move the basic bundle more since I'm sure next to no one is trying to get that one.
Considering the restrictions of Nintendo's digital service, I'm really not surprised.
It's the worst service by far, especially when looking at the restrictions (lock to system, when you transfer purchase saves don't transfer, full retail cost, no discount, etc).
50 extra coins to but a digital game that's full price, can't be shared, has no trade-in value, and more importantly locked to a system and not an account making it hard to put on another system and if said sysem is broken or lost you're sol by losing the game too or having Nintendo fix it for around 100 bucks. For 50 extra coins...
A 4GB Xbox 360 costs $199. A 120GB PS3 costs $249.
A new Nintendo system with similar specs, no built id hand drive and a touchscreen controller BETTER cost $249 or I think most people just won't bother. We will obviously.
My prediction is that they will make it $299, include the system, 1 gamepad, Nintendoland.
My other prediction is that half the stuff they say will be ready at launch, won't be, and they won't show up until 3 months down with little to no communication explaining what's going on and when stuff will be released.
I also predict they will have a horrible marketing push that will confuse consumers as to what exactly the Wii U is, and media will compare it to Apple TV and an Ipad, which I personally think it's warranted, though silly as an Ipad/tv cost almost a grand, but then again it's Apple and they sarcasm can do no wrong /sarcasm
I think he explained it poorly. It comes down to money.Right now the Wii gets next to no third party games because the Wii needs special attention due to it's graphical differences. Attention costs money and no third party wants to spend that extra amount vs what they think they will make back.
The Wii U is on par with the 360 and PS3, so now it won't take much effort at all to port (especially if they skip the Pad controller for the traditional one) so it'll cost next to nothing to slap over a port, maximizing profit for the company.
Now what he mentions is down the line with the new Sony and MS systems come out, they'll be a difference again, and if that difference is too big, it'll again be in a position where it needs extra attention that third parties don't want to pay for.
Graphics aren't everything, but everything is about money.
Purchases still locked to a system and not an easily transferable account? Still no digital sales of any kind? The scarcity of demos?
I'm going to point in the direction of NO, they are absolutely not getting it. They are getting there, but they still look like they are a generation behind again with digital infrastructure.
Not saying MS is any better, but I think PSN and Steam are the best examples. Steam especially. Oh and GOG (Good Old Gaming). That's probably the best example actually.
I love the folders, but the fact you can't pick an image, make an image with the camera or even have the first app/game in the folder be an image on the 3D folder is kind of dumb.
Why they chose to have it the first symbol/letter/number on the name is beyond my understanding.
It's like Nintendo can't do ANYTHING without doing at least one little thing that makes some people scratch their heads.
I don't think AR will ever be good with the 3DS because, frankly, the cameras suck. I'm not saying a 12MP camera, but something that isn't grainy as heck would definitely help.
Course then again, I don't know if AR will ever be good unless it's some sort of headset that covers your whole vision.
Hard to believe there are still people willing to blindly defend Nintendo on this, and attack a developer for being a "baby" and "whiner" when he's quoted saying his dev house screwed up too. I love when someone said both said sucks, but people say "No just YOU suck."
I remember when people yelled at me and other people for saying WiiWare and Nintendo's digital service was crap within the first year of the Wii. Saying that it was amazing. A lot of opinions finally caught up with reality, but I guess there's some who haven't accepted it yet.
WiiWare was a disaster, and any good game released on it was overshadowed by just how bad the service and infrastructure was, which is a complete shame considering some of the games. DSiWare was even worse, if you could believe that (especially when Reggie was quoted saying that DSiWare is about QUALITY not QUANTITY, when in fact it was neither and Nintendo was one of the worst offenders for it too), and while I think 3DS is vastly improved, it's still VERY bad compared to things like Steam, GOG and PSN. That's just from the consumer view, I have no idea how bad or good it is from a developer, some say it's good, some say it's horrible, some are in the middle. All I know is that the game makers should get a cut day one of the release, no some minimum sale to get money crap. This isn't the shopping channel. If any other digital service has this (even ones I've mentioned) then I'll hate them too.
Nintendo still has a long way to go before I will personally find their digital service/infrastructure acceptable. The Wii Us RELEASE (not details) will probably change or cement my view, but yeah, Nintendo has a long way to go.
$249 would be a more appealing price, but I'm guessing Nintendo will start at $300 and if people buy it, stay there, but if they don't, they can safely drop it to $250 without taking a hit like they did with the 3DS price drop.
@SoZettaFox Yeah. They should just focus on the overall suckage that is Nintendo's digital platforms, not just the lack of VC titles, but the lack of their digital fronts being good, in any form.
Controls are half the battle for an MMO. The other half is stable online infrastructure.
Being able to patch when they want, and add content when they want.
Considering Nintendo's "amazing" approval process for digital content and letting companies patch their games when they want (by which I mean almost never) I'm sure MMOs would be GREAT on the Wii U.
Oh let's not forget this won't come with a harddrive, so you either need a dedicated large SD card, or there needs to be some harddrive add-on.
I doubt we'll see the latter two, but I could be wrong. I HOPE I'm wrong, I'd love to play me some Secret World or Conan or the Wii U.
The most exciting this this week in their digital releases is a demo. They're totally on top of their game with this digital stuff now. They've learned their lessons for sure.
This is why I hate our societies. lol I struggle to make ends meat, and you have giant companies like Apple and Nintendo just hoarding piles of cash and just laugh, as they demand more money from us.... T-T
I'm totally for games going completely digital, I just won't be buying from certain companies, Nintendo being one of them.
Why? Cause, as it stands (things can change) I hate hate HATE buying games that are locked to a system and not an account. It makes upgrading/replacing/etc are huge pain in the rear.
And Nintendo never, ever EVER has digital sales, which is one of the best things about platforms like Steam and GoG. I'm not paying for a 5 year old games for full price.
Also some other companies like EA who if they ban you, lock you out of all content you paid for, course I think issues like that should be addressed with consumer rights laws within a persons country. Companies can't come and take your physical copies of games if they ban you from a store/forum, why can they do it when you buy digital? EULAs? Pffft, laws will always trump them.
Since whether or not Japanese games suck or not is a matter of opinion and taste, NOT fact as the Internet likes to believe opinions and tastes are. I will give an example of how easy it is to have an opposite opinion.
"im sorry american guy! i was a bit rough, but your country's games are f****** terrible nowadays."
OMG! I stated an opinion! It must be fact and everyone must believe this!
Man humanity and the Internet fails bad sometimes.
People should be happy about this weeks download. It's not like, after all these years, people should expect any better from Nintendo. This is about as good as it gets.
How is this going to attract developers? If anything it shows that third parties shouldn't even try, since if it's not a Nintendo made game, it won't sell very well.
It made more then I thought it would, but this obviously shows what everyone thought. Third parties don't succeed on Nintendo's platforms.
As for Let's Golf. My guess is they succeeded simply because they were the first 3D game on the shop.
Yes there's a TON and TON of possibilities for the Wii U, but all of Nintendo's have had possibilities. Many never being made possible or what people imagined. Some beyond.
It's all up to Nintendo. The Wii U could be an amazing multi-media machine, but all we can do is guess and wait till E3.
I'm personally still skeptical about Nintendo getting it right, especially with online.
People jumping to the defense of "Developers has to publish through Nintendo" or "They are the ones that signed the contract" aren't really helping the case on how bad Nintendo's digital service is.
Saying take it or leave it...Is basically what's going on right now with developers. And they are leaving. Is that what you want? Or do you want to call Nintendo out on their flaws and yell at them to fix them so developers that make your so called good games are actually enticed TO make games for the service and not others.
Whatever the reason for Nintendo's extreme control on their digital platforms, it's not working in their favor.
It makes it pretty obvious why developers flock to companies like Apple and Steam. They get far more control over their software then with Nintendo. Even for small things like pricing and promos.
Control is a double edge sword. Squeeze too much and you cut yourself.
While pathetically low, and my stance on Nintendo doing a horrible job of promoting their digital content (or even letting people know what's coming out for that matter)
IN Nintendo's defense, Icons sales for IOS and PSP aren't much different save for Bashi Blocks.
Also the WiiWare sales is roughly $275k in profit minus whatever Nintendo's cut is. If that means anything to anyone. To me, in a year, that's not bad, but it could clearly be better.
If they do let you read books, Nintendo would be smart to just let Kobo, Amazon and Barnes'n'Noble make their own apps with in app purchases and just give Nintendo a small cut.
But, since Nintendo likes to do it the "Nintendo way". It'll be their own market, overpriced and never promoted with next to not enough content for a good year.
While I'm glad they are putting in a chat app period, I still wish it was built into the firmware and not a separate app.
I would be nice to talk to people WHILE playing a game instead of closing the game then opening up chat. Similar to how you can browse, take notes, and look at your friends list.... In fact I wish the text chat was IN the friends tab.

Re: Nintendo: Wii U Basic Bundle Designed To Attract Core Gamers
@steamhare no, since you can just plug in any HDD or an SD card up to 32(64?)GB the storage isn't a big deal.

Re: New Super Mario Bros. 2 Will Cost £39.99 to Download
I've heard of digital prices staying after after TIME and when things go on sale, but being higher then physical copy AT launch.
That must be a first.
Nintendo, always trying to do things different, even if it's not at all better.
Re: New Super Mario Bros. 2 eShop Bonus Confirmed for North America

Re: Talking Point: Should Zelda Go Episodic?
No.
Not because it wouldn't work, but because Nintendo would most likely sell these episodes at full price because it's Zelda.
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Should Offer Indie Game Bundles
Competitive digital prices PERIOD would be nice, not just special bundles.

Unless Nintendo changes it's mind on sale prices, but you know me. lol I just expect Nintendo to fail at every turn when it comes to online stuff.
