No, but not because I don't think it would work, it COULD work. I don't want it because I have no faith in Nintendo doing it right. They can do retail physical right (for most of their games), but they have yet to do anything online right. That's why I say no.
I think thriving is not something they should focus on right now.
I think in many peoples eyes, Nintendo needs to prove the 3DS is a viable platform to own. Right now many people see it as a waste of time aside from the AR stuff.
Prove to people a reason to buy the system first, then work on letting it thrive. This is usually done at LAUNCH but I guess Nintendo screwed that up.
I have faith that they will prove the 3DS worth, but unfortunately it seems that worth won't be until this holiday.
The more I read the more I head that the controller is going to just be a DSiXL with protruding handgrips on the back.
Why would Nintendo buy and HD screen when they can just use the DSiXL screens they already manufacture for cheap? Why get a camera remotely considered decent when they can just use the 0.30MP cameras they use on the DSi/DSiXL? Why bother with a fancy touchscreen when they can just use the XLs? (the XL is 4.2", not 6")
Why even bother changing the button layout? Maybe add two slider pad things from the 3DS and maybe even it's gyros, throw in the Wiimotes bluetooth (or wifi depending if it'll stream a lot of content) and there you go. A fancy controller made from cheap already ready-made materials.
And honestly why wouldn't they go this route? It'll keep costs low while still innovating, kinda. And since the Wiimote will be compatible (thus classic controller too). It's a nice cheap innovative controller.
Nice idea except they want you to twitter it or Facebook it to get your vote in. Kind of cheap to be honest. I understand it's a form of promotion, but then let there be a third normal vote option with Twit and FB counting as extra votes or something.
The funny part is when he says they thought it had more potential to be something even bigger.
It's funny because they forgot to add the stuff called content to MAKE it bigger. Instead it's officially a 3D converted DSiWare game milked at full price for retail.
Honestly though, they were probably working on it, and then the alarms rang and they had to rush the 3DS out and so they just ported it quickly. And it couldn't be 3DSware because. lol yeah you know why.
I KNEW they were going to hold it till E3! Nintendo NEVER releases something just to get it out there, even if it should have been out a long time ago.
They do this for everything, the sd solution for the Wii being one good example. They held that till GDC just to sound cool.
Oot puts it on top? Maybe for a little while, But Nintendo needs to do way more software wise to keep it on top long term. Getting that online store up and running ASAP wouldn't hurt either.
E3 will be importan for Nintendo this year, maybe even MORE important then the E3 when they announced the WIi.
Hint systems are fine. Taking away doesn't necessarily take away the fun to some people. It can take away the frustration of being stuck and not knowing what to do. So instead of giving up on the game, they can keep going.
The people complaining about this were probably the same people saying the hint system in Mario Bros Wii and SMG2 were going to ruin gaming. lol
The 3DS will never come remotely close to selling as well as the DS. In fact, I don't know if any system will sell as well.
As much as some of you hate to say it, the handheld market is becoming too saturated. As much as you want to say smartphones aren't gaming pads, it doesn't matter. It's taking "non-gamers" away from purchasing a gaming handheld.
While this isn't bad by any means. The market itself is growing, thus it's kind of a win for everyone, even Nintendo. I just don't see any current or future handheld devices every reaching DS numbers.
Not holding my breath. Considering the social aspects of the 3DS have been pretty lackluster, a greatly improved digital platform is not something I would expect.
Of course it'll make it to NA. Nintendo isn't coming out with a new console so they need to milk the Wii. What's easier than just porting over existing games.
Iwata already stated they they will prolong the Wii in markets by porting games that never made it over. Like this game and Last Story as well as many others.
Can't wait to see what the limitations for 3DS Ware are. If Nintendo hasn't learned their mistakes by then, then we may as well just give up on online being anything remotely good with a Nintendo system.
People make fun of people saying this, but even though Nintendo has been going with online systems for years, they are not even remotely close to getting it right. They just... For some weird reason suck at everything online.
Games are brilliant. Hardware is great. Online functionality for anything? Pffffft!
I meant only listen to Iwata in regards to company policy and direction. The names you mentioned are game makers, in which they are fascinating to listen too and to hear about the game they are working on, but in terms of Nintendo's policies and direction. I only think Iwata is the only man you should listen too. Mayyyyyybe Miyamoto, but I whole heartedly believe that everything that comes out of Reggies mouth is just PR BS.
And while I do think there was amazing games on DSiWare. I believe there wasn't enough and the ratio of gems to piles of poo were just so messed up. Nintendo themselves are a main culprit on DSiWare's suckage, specifically with their Illusion games.
Reggie says a lot of things. I'm amazed people still believe him.
He did say before the DSiWare launcehd that DSiWare was more about quality vs quantity. And we all know where DSiWare ended up. No quantity and barely any quality.
Just stop listening to Reggie. Only take heed what Iwata says, cause that's from the top, not a marketing man who's only intent is trying to make Nintendo look as good as possible.
Get the GBA version and play it on your DS Lite. That is the ultimate version so far unless you want the CG stuff from the PS One disc.
I'm honestly hoping for an HD remake of this game, not a 3DS remake. I would love to see the art style of the game in full HD polygons in all it's glory with full VO work.
No, I picked them because they are companies that have their own offices to make a point. I've seen piles of garbage come out of actual companies that are just as bad as these "garage" developers.
I'm trying to make the point that this stance by Nintendo is not filtering out the low quality games at all, but just making them miss the chance at finding a true gem concept of a game.
Nintendo has their own approval process with their digital games, just like Apple does. They CAN filter out the garbage games if they wanted to, but quality of games means nothing to them, as long as it's a business that can pay for the development kits and fees.
Reggie's comment is hypocritical in taking this stance on "garage" developers while later in the same interview talking about long term value for a games to make them cost $50 vs $1. A pricing structure which they ALSO control on their system. Since as I showed, value means nothing to them since they allow games like Flashlight for $2 and Ninjabread man to be full price when it was release when those games are literally disposable games. It's also hypocritical that in the same interview he talks about meeting ever consumers demand, while ignoring these type of developers are in fact ignoring those consumers that demand low cost "disposable" games.
Can there be disposable games that are priced better than the App store? Yes. I think a 2.99-5.99 price structure would be more beneficial to both developers, consumers and Nintendo, but we all know when it comes to money, Nintendo is NEVER about the consumer.
That is the most pathetic logic I've seen a major console company ever say.
The freshest ideas come from people not swallowed up in the industry... Well I guess if they want to keep all the fresh ideas out.
As for "garage" developers making crap. These "garage" developers can't afford retail distribution, thus turn to digital, and we already know Nintendo has an approval process similar to Apples, so if the crap gets through, it's their fault.
So, yeah, I completely disagree because the best developers don't start in the business, they start somewhere else. And like some people have said, amazing games like Cave Story was made in a "garage".
They do have things to fear about mobile gaming. People who PLAY games know that dedicated systems like DS and Wii offer the best type of games, but the expanded market of "non-gamers" that Nintendo made a ton of money off of with the Wii don't know any better. They just go for the cheapest and most convenient stuff, which is on their smartphones.
Mobile gaming feeds off uneducated people who don't know what quality games are. That IS a threat to everyone who cares about real games.
This is the year the Wii will be carried by first party software. I really really REALLY doubt we'll see any quality third party games, unless pushed by Nintendo themselves.
Heck, I'm amazed they haven't tried to port Conduit to PS3/360 as a digital game or something.
They were going to make a Nintendogs Wii with Wii Speak support, but then they remembered they don't support their own peripherals 6 months after their released. lol
"I agree with Reggie too. If you flood the market with terrible games then people will get tired of trying to pick out the few good games from the sea of crap and stop buying games altogether. Wait, are you talking about the Wii or Nintendo's digital platforms?

Don't expect big name games.
MAYBE a couple games from Square and Konami, but don't get you're hopes up people.
Oh and SOME Nintendo games are a given.

Pathetic list.

With Mario 3DS it's pretty obvious it will.
I also think a price drop to 199US would make it fly off the shelves even more.

Re: Wii Just Couldn't Handle Sonic Generations
Face it guys, the Wii is dying down and going away.
Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not because we have a new Nintendo console right around the corner.
Re: Miyamoto: We Want to Create Meaningful Download Games
While I believe the words that come out of Miyamoto and Iwata's mouth more than say...Reggies.
Reggie DID say DSiWare was more about quality and not quantity, and we all know how that ended up. So I'm not holding my breath on this.

I wouldn't expect a capacitive touchscreen. They are far more expensive then a resistive. I just don't see Nintendo going of that.

Poor Fox. Always getting the short end of the stick.
Re: Nintendo Announces eShop Update for 6th June
@Silverblacktail If you haven't figured it out yet, , I have ZERO faith in Nintendo ever getting online functionality right.
They can make amazing hardware, they can make amazing software most of the time, but online features... They just don't seem to get it.
So yes I'm pessimistic. I'll be the same for the next Nintendo console too.
Re: Nintendo Announces eShop Update for 6th June
@JayArr
Well if their online launch is anything like their previous online launches.
It's gonna suck pretty bad for about a year, and then a year later it'll pretty much dry up and no one will care. lol

Re: Get Your First Look at 3DS eShop's Mega Man Game Now
@pikmaniac02 Oh there will be a size limit. The question is, has Nintendo learned their lesson and made the size limit not flat out stupid small.
@Tj92 I really doubt this game will be $2. Look at all of Nintendo's digital games. This will be $5-8 MINIMUM.

What about backwards compatible for Gamecube? Ohhhh right, they'll probably be rereleasing those as HD remakes.
Not that it's a bad thing, but it would've been cooler if they just let us use the cube discs and the machine did an upscaling thing.

We all knew this though? Iwata said they will "milk" the Wii more by porting games they should've ported a year or more ago. lol
Re: 3DSWare File Size May Be Bigger Than WiiWare
The WII had a 40MB size limit for it's digital games.
DSiWare though unconfirmed had around 20MB size limit.
This was unconfirmed but none of the game sizes past 20MB.
Though most DS games were between 64-128MB, with some of the huge ones getting as big as 512MB.
I think a limit of 100MB would be perfect. It's big enough so they can cram content in while still being able to put in some decent graphics.
Knowing Nintendo though, I'm sure the limit will be 40MB.
Re: 3DSWare File Size May Be Bigger Than WiiWare
Not holding my breath. Considering the social aspects of the 3DS have been pretty lackluster, a greatly improved digital platform is not something I would expect.
