I love that someone think Nintendo Direct should be scrapped altogether. facepalm Really? Scrapped entirely? Nintendo Direct is the one intelligent marketing choice Nintendo is making.
I don't understand why this is exclusive to the UK site? If you go to the nintendo.com Kirby site, it's nothing like this: http://kirby.nintendo.com/triple-deluxe/
I'm excited to see what Nintendo can do. I feel fortunate to be a Nintendo fan who owns a 3DS and Wii U right now - both are great systems! In fact, I think the 3DS is the best console (handheld or otherwise) I've ever owned. I'm proud to back the underdog and don't have much interest in murder simulators on the other consoles. Good luck, Nintendo! =)
Nobody hits a home run every single time. Failure is definitely part of the game and I admire Iwata for hanging tough to try and improve the company. Any coward can tuck tail and run away when the chips are down. Nintendo has always been in it for the long haul and the Wii U is an opportunity to improve and grow. Any mature, sane person knows this already. This guy is spelling it out succinctly.
I would love to see a handheld system I can plug into my television. I think that's a fabulous idea. Hardware design is certainly at a point where there shouldn't be any reason this couldn't be done and it offers product flexibility and value. Personally, I believe the virtual games should be shared across platforms right now through your Nintendo account. I really want to play Earthbound on my 3DS, for example.
I love how Mario was outsold by the VERY lackluster Knack (55/100 Metacritic). At this point, anyone crying, 'it's about the games' is lost in their own delusion of reality. Mario should outsell Knack but those new Playstation owners need a game for that shiny new turd they own. If Wii U isn't around a year from now as this clear fortune teller has predicted, then you can all kiss quality gaming goodbye. What these people are proving is that you can shovel out crap ALL DAY LONG and the consumer will continue to buy. So there's no reason to take time and develop quality content. Look at Angry Birds. Gaming is no longer about quality experiences, it is about always having new content, even if it's not particularly good. If it's NEW and it looks shiny, apparently, people will buy. Everyone crying about Nintendo, you're gonna be crying a LOT harder if they go belly up later on and all you're left with is Call of Duty games and horrible mobile gaming.
Nintendo are optimists who've never strayed from making high quality entertainment products. They need to tweak their launches better in the future but I think the Wii U will find its footing next year. There are a LOT of gamers out there on the fence about getting a Wii U. Give them a few more solid titles and they'll pick it up because they can't resist missing those great games.
Miyamoto will be remembered for years to come for his mark and legacy in gaming. This guy and (perhaps to some extent) EA will not. It's popular to criticize Nintendo these days and he's getting on the bandwagon to say, 'hey, me too.'
Also, I'd like to add that comparing him to a 'dead guy from Cupertino' is probably not a necessary remark. It's not classy or professional - it's just disrespectful.
This is awesome! I'm really thankful Nintendo is keeping these games alive. My daughter is in love with Mario and Kirby. In a couple years, she'll be ready to tackle Zelda. I try to imagine if there were only Xbox and Playstation consoles and I know our family would have limited video game options.
@element187 I don't get it. I'm always proud to like the games others don't. Why do they care what others think? I suppose if a rift in the time space continuum is a factor, we'd better convert and start beating those virtual hookers!
@Snkfiend Whenever you say 'they', you include everyone in the community. I'm irreverent about Rockstar bringing Grand Theft Auto to Wii U since I'm not interested in playing it. Personally, I neither boycott it or support it. I said I would only support its release on the console to help inject sales and support for the Wii U. My position and possibly many others remain unchanged.
Moreover, I'm unconvinced the community at Nintendo Life have banded together against Grand Theft Auto purely based on its exclusion from the Nintendo console. To insinuate that seems more like an assumption and not necessarily anything based on fact. Would this article exist if it had been released on Wii U? It's hard to tell. Regardless, those who feel it's an enjoyable game should use their time to enjoy it and not worry about the affairs or opinions of others who don't share theirs.
@Snkfiend Why can't it be both? I, for one, would support and welcome GTA on the Wii U. It might help support the console and increase sales. That's good for Nintendo and their fans. However, I would remain uninterested in playing the game, just as I am uninterested in playing COD, regardless of which platform it exists on. Unless you can point out specifically who has changed their opinion about wanting to play purely based on some jealousy that it didn't arrive on Wii U, it's speculation at best. You can't throw everyone under the bus because you think the community are now turncoats against Rockstar for not bringing their game to Wii U.
@Gamer83 I would encourage you to read the opinion again. At no point did @Damo suggest those who like the game are aiding in society's ills, though that is a point worth exploring and discussing. Moreover, it's an opinion piece, not a review or consumer report. Nor is it particularly charging - certainly never dressing up the fans as 'bad people'. It is well-timed in light of the game's release and does well to speak to a segment of the gaming population that is undoubtedly surrounded by Grand Theft Auto media right now, particularly if you're not a fan.
Perhaps you feel ashamed? Certainly, if you don't take issue with the title, there would no reason to be upset since the article never suggests you shouldn't buy it, play it or otherwise. But you already know that. So, continue playing it and have a great time! Take solace in knowing so many other gamers out there agree with you and that a much larger percentage of the gaming population will be playing, too! No one thinks you're lesser. Some just casually disagree or like me, feel kind of dirty engaging it.
@Damo I really couldn't agree with you more. To be honest, I think it's a byproduct of a culture becoming more and more desensitized to violence, corruption, theft and prostitution - indeed, many aspects of the darker nature of the human condition. More people should be concerned. What separates GTA from many other games (certainly not all) is its visceral approach to creating a life-like experience that doesn't do well to fictionalize and fantasize the world and events surrounding its characters. It is very much unlike, say, Zelda, Mario or many other Nintendo franchises that succeed well without putting the proverbial gun or kinfe in the player's hands and allowing them to shoot, stab and slaughter innocents. Who can deny the positioned 'cattle' of the virtual passerby that encourages player's to plunge into their darker spirit?
What troubles me further still is the apparent lack of responsibility in media creationists' hands. It took Stephen King only one episode to pull his book out of publication to realize he didn't want to be responsible for aiding any future violent event. Is a game worth one life? Or two? Or 10? Where do we draw the line and are we certain of all the consequences? I've never seen anything absolutely conclusive to argue either way. To me, as a parent, as a concerned citizen about guns, violence and irreverent positions on life, I, too, choose to avoid these games because I see absolutely no benefit, education or entertainment from those kind of engagements, virtual or otherwise.
@KingH3nrry Gotta agree with @bizcuthammer here, you're missing out! I love my Wii U but, the 3DS has a great library right now that's only getting better. I can't afford everything on both consoles but if I had to choose one to keep, it would definitely be the 3DS right now.
Why would Nintendo dramatically change course when they have a proven track record that spans almost 30 years of gaming? Every generation I hear how horrible Nintendo is, how they're on the edge of becoming extinct and yet, they're still here creating great games. To me, the issue remains marketing. The consumer will gravitate towards great games and new experiences if they know about it. Nintendo has to double their efforts to stand out and not be afraid to say, "We're not another Xbox or Playstation clone, we offer something different." They have nothing to fear and they'd do well to explain what makes their products unique and attractive. They did that with Wii and they couldn't keep it on the shelves. I think they might have put too much stock into putting a new Wii-labeled box on the shelf thinking consumers were just going to buy it.
@Scollurio Love the controller. It's not a gimmick at all. It's a well thought-out enhancement to console gaming. I kind of feel like Nintendo has been around long enough they don't really need tricks to garner attention.
Am I the only one not looking for Bethesda games on Nintendo consoles? I mean, seriously, not at all. I keep saying the same thing. I like Nintendo because they're not another Microsoft or Sony. Why does the pie have to be split three ways in the console industry? I like the odd man out.
If I want to play Skyrim, I'll look for a PC port or try to invest in a second console. I bought a Wii U to play Nintendo games. I'm okay with the idea that 3 dozen shooter titles aren't available to me like they are on Xbox and PS. I'm getting a greater variety of games available to me with Nintendo.
Anyone else out there have kids? Is it more important to you that Nintendo deliver content you can play with them or that you get private time to yourself slaughtering people in every conceivable way? Listen, if you want your cake and to eat it too - buy a Wii U and a second console. Or install ports on your PC/Mac. Nintendo isn't going to grab every 3rd party title and it's an argument that's getting exhausted to death.
@coalmoore I think I would be disappointed with a plank of wood with a big N on it. Love my 3DS, love my Wii U and will probably buy a 2DS for my daughter who is really wanting to play Animal Crossing with me.
