looks like I wasn't the only one with this idea! I never heard of the first game, but the trailer for the sequel looks great to me so I'll probably pick this one up at some point
When the European and NA box art are similar, EU often wins out with me because of the added splash of color that the background/border has as opposed to US's standard black.
@DevlinMandrake I just wanted to throw in an opinion: I completely agree with you, but I feel otherwise on the moral standpoint of sharing ROM's considering that creators can port their work from gamecube to a new system. If the game isn't made available for purchase (either a port or just hold over of new stock still being sold for gamecube) then I think it's understandable to share.
I'm surprised that Europe isn't higher on the list at the time of my writing, I think it's top! The colored border really pushes it over the edge for me compared to America
While I feel that Japan has the best "art", the NA cover, while a little funky with things (especially Sonic's look) is the most memorable for the game. It nails everything you need to know about Sonic 3 where as the Japanese cover (while still looking hella rad) is more just a generic 90's graphic.
I got 9/15, but I only knew about 3, the rest were guesses based of of the art style and whether or not it matched with the era of the consoles listed.
I understand how the Japanese Art could be seen as generic, but the movement and energy of it is just so darn cool. I like judging these with the consideration of how I would've felt picking these up as a kid and the Japanese one definitely would have drawn my eye.
While the US one is fun with the tag lines and critical reception, it just doesn't beat the smooth coolness of the Japanese cover for me.
@KitsuneNight well said. I think games like Shovel Knight do it well; replicating old school looks but stretching some of the limitations past the original hardware's limit so that it feels like the way you remember the games in your head as opposed to the way the way they really are (which, like you said, most likely doesn't hold up).
@KitsuneNight just curious, do you feel the same way about 2D pixel art? I'm more interested in low poly because it's a bit refreshing to me these days, where as (while I still enjoy it) pixel art just feels so oversaturated in today's market.
@notahuman I agree; seems like a lot of their promotional material has been more aligned with the queer community (with character designs and whatnot). Makes sense too, I feel like there is a large overlap with the two communities
Seemingly contrary to popular opinion, the European one takes the cake for this one for me! Normally I love the japanese illustrations of famicom games, but this one ain't doing it for me this time...

@KitsuneNight good point, that plus indie games really keep it prominent
