Re: Talking Point: How Much Would You Pay For A Mint Copy Of Super Mario Bros.?

ERIC_MACK

I really like learning about production and marketing from Nintendo in different eras, and having a sealed box would be a really interesting thing! So it's not that I'd be paying for a game, but paying for a piece of history that has a decent amount of value to me. I get that others wouldn't find it valuable though too.
With that being said, I would be willing to pay around $100. It'd be really cool to have and check out, but at the end of the day, something more than $100 could go towards something more useful.

Re: Metal Gear Creator Hideo Kojima Is "Afraid" Of A Future Without Physical Media

For most people, I think that digital only is not only a neutral option, but actually preferable. And while I know that this is a gray area depending on the context, I see no reason why software shouldn't be ripped and backed up for historical preservation.

Obviously, piracy is the concern here, so I think everyone would feel better about it if there was some sort of official group that made it a point to handle preservation. That's easier said than done, I know. I believe it would have its best shot at being established if it was funded in part by major developers and publishers for the sake of the medium but I don't see that happening.

The people who would be loosing out here are the hardcore hobbyists like a lot of us on this site. We wouldn't be able to curate our own collection of physical games. The only solution I can see in that department is to just support physical as much as you are financially able/willing. Especially things like limited run games!

Re: Metal Gear Creator Hideo Kojima Is "Afraid" Of A Future Without Physical Media

ERIC_MACK

@Rob3008 That's an interesting point! But I can't help but wonder if it'll be possible with platforms.
Vinyls are a standard format that can be played on any brand of record player. In the future, if a console goes digital only, will there be any option for physical? I'm not sure the crowd who prefers physical is large enough for companies to create another whole console that runs on physical media. I think we are seeing that with the PS5 right now because people need time to transition to fully. My expectation (and I'm no expert in this) is that once the fully digital consoles get phased in, the physical-based ones will get phased out.
That being said, I feel like of all the companies, Nintendo would hold out the longest on physical media. Not sure why that is, but it seems like they have been silently supporting it the most.

Even if physical copies do end up becoming impossible for later systems, I wouldn't be surprised if physical copies are sold with very nice empty boxes and a manual (just like they do now with some games that come with a download code). Regardless, similar to vinyls, it looks like it will become more of a niche hardcore crowd who purchases physical.

Re: Animal Crossing Datamine Suggests Popular Hangout Could Still Return

ERIC_MACK

@LavaTwilight Wow, that must be interesting to make such a jump in the series! I'm glad to hear that you enjoy this new take on it!
The way I see it, we always have the old games to go back to and by changing it each time, we get something new. I suppose the frustration can come in when people feel like it betrays core mechanics/themes of older games.
Despite any of that though, I really did have a great time with NH. It didn't represent what I love about the AC series, but it was a new experience, one that I relate to being much more social and focused on expressing myself through the town I build.

Re: Animal Crossing Datamine Suggests Popular Hangout Could Still Return

ERIC_MACK

@shining_nexus @Dizzymario I know that people are expecting stuff from the old games, but I'm surprised that they are expecting things at all.
If I remember correctly, Nintendo said early on that there would be some on going updates, but knowing Nintendo, I didn't expect any of these to really be substantial. The updates that we've gotten have surpassed my expectations of what we would get!
Did Nintendo announce somewhere/heavily imply that they would be bringing MAJOR updates or did people just kinda start assuming that? Granted, if someone did assume that, their assumptions would've been justified after the Redd and diving updates.

Re: Animal Crossing Datamine Suggests Popular Hangout Could Still Return

ERIC_MACK

On a related note, do people expect this game to get an overhaul of mechanics? Since it launched I figured it would pretty much stay that way with a couple of updated events/items/whatever. When they added things back like Redd and diving, I was surprised. To me, those added mechanics are the outlier, not the expectation.

Is there a specific reason that (it sounds like) people are expecting Nintendo to amend things so drastically that it rekindles interest in a major way? Genuinely curious.

Re: Animal Crossing Datamine Suggests Popular Hangout Could Still Return

ERIC_MACK

Everytime that I play an AC game, I play until I pretty much complete all my town building goals. From that point on, I either return every now and then to scratch the itch or start a new town and do it all over again. I never play consistently over a year or two.
While I'd argue that ACNH is pretty darn different from the other games, I played it the same as all of the others in this respect.
Adding a cafe won't "bring the game back to life" for me in any major way, but I would very much enjoy checking it out! After all, my favorite game in the series is WW

Re: New Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 Footage Shown, Aiming For A 2022 Switch Release

ERIC_MACK

@Kaori-chan I was going to say the same thing. I know some people are outwardly negative about it, but I don't see all the "whining" going on to the degree that some are commenting on.

I'm not personally excited about the game but I don't think it'll be bad/Nintendo is the worst or anything. It's just not looking like something I'm super interested in.

And to add to that, I know that this is a judgement based off of very little info, but I'm not saying I will definitely not like it. Once we learn more, I might totally turn around with it, but in the interest of discussing what we think of things revealed up to this point, I wanted to share my thoughts and opinions. And from what I've seen, many other people feel similarly which is really interesting! I thought that I'd be alone in this.

Re: New Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 Footage Shown, Aiming For A 2022 Switch Release

ERIC_MACK

@Yoshilapin It looks to me like there are new elements (sky islands, runes, etc) but not different elements. MM had all different things where as this looks like it might be new but mostly similar to BotW (more like expansive DLC than anything else). But then again, this is a proper "sequel" and MM wasn't, so I suppose it makes sense that it's staying a little more similar to BotW.

Re: New Breath Of The Wild 2 Footage Shown, Aiming For A 2022 Release

ERIC_MACK

@Fighter_Hayabusa I feel similar, although I also personally never wanted a BotW2 sequel. I loved playing the first one and it was a really unique experience, but I've already experienced the exploration.

If they insist on making a squeal to it, I would prefer it to have extremely different (and weird) mechanics compared to its predecessor (just like OoT to MM).

And let me just say, I don't think this will be "bad", I'm just personally not super pumped for it, but I know plenty of folks are which is great!

Re: New Breath Of The Wild 2 Footage Shown, Aiming For A 2022 Release

ERIC_MACK

@marnelljm I really thought that this would be the time that the rumors were actually legit. I still think that a switch pro is coming at some point, but after years of "No seriously, it'll be announced at the next direct", I can't be convinced anyone has any legitimate knowledge on its release (or if it exists period).

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Deserted Island Diary Releases This September

ERIC_MACK

@Snatcher, just incase you want one more viewpoint, here’s my thoughts with some context:

I watched my older brother play the GC one and I played every title religiously since then. I always buy the guidebook with the game and have a blast of putting in about 200-300 hours in the span of 1-3 months before I start to taper off. I would return to WW frequently, would start new towns in CF, and only popped back into NL occasionally just for old time’s sake as the years went by (but i never really put in too much more after the initial 200 hours). NH has followed that same pattern as NL for me: I put in about 230 hours over a couple of months and only return when getting nostalgic for the island, but I don’t really “play” it anymore and don’t think I will in the future (unless there is a major update).

From what I’ve read here, I think you’d definitely find it to be worth trying. Here’s what I would identify as the core experience:
@Mountain_Man put it best when saying it’s not less, just different. After the initial 2-week hump, I spent many hours planning and building the exterior of my island to make it have some really grand landmarks and it was great! The limitations of it (compared to something like minecraft) actually make it very fun imo. It’s like a puzzle to see how grand you can build that area of town given the tools. I’d say that this is the main appeal of this game.

Sidenote: the unlocking progression system in the first 2 weeks was great from what i remember. It felt like they took the long term unlocks from other games and just put all of that upfront. Once completing it, it’s up to you to take the island in the direction that you want. I don’t want every AC game to be like this but it was fun.

So with all of that being said, I often tell my friends who are newcomers to the AC series that NH is great, but not that much of a traditional AC game imo. To me, it’s almost more of a city builder sim than a life sim. WW made it feel like you were moving into an existing town and would talk to characters that had history and grew with you and the town as a whole. NH feels like a god sim where you get to build up an ideal village from scratch and the villagers are just like decorative pawns that exist as an excuse to have houses on the island. It’s not perhaps as dramatic as them being “lifeless” but for me at least, it is certainly not the appeal of this game.

TL;DR - other AC games felt like slowly growing with a community and NH feels like a god sim town builder. But, at the end of the day, I find both to be enjoyable.

Re: Among Us Now Has Official Plushies

ERIC_MACK

I scoured Etsy during the holidays and found the perfect style Among Us plush that I wanted.
I'm pretty sure that I saw this exact style too (although, it was unofficial at that point obviously).

Re: Poll: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Is Out Today On Switch, Are You Getting It?

ERIC_MACK

If Nintendo released a trophy/achievement system on Switch, this (along with other Wii U ports) would be a day one purchase for me. I often find myself losing interest in replaying older games halfway through, but getting trophies to add to the larger meta game off leveling up my nintendo account would totally get me excited to 100% it.

That being said, SM3DW is one of my favorite mario games so I would like to pick it up one day regardless, just when it makes more sense financially

Re: Poll: Which Is Your Favourite GameCube Console Variant?

ERIC_MACK

I'm surprised by the number of jet black votes, I thought I'd be one of the few. But like most other people's reasoning, I voted for it because I grew up with it and have many fond memories.

Orange Spice was always really neat, but I associate it more with a gaming novelty than a true representation of that era.

I considered voting platinum - I never actually liked it that much, but I think the idea of a slight metallic look to the console is neat and also is very representative of the early 2000's to me (a lot of PS gear had this look as well around then).
