My interest in this game will largely be based on one thing: does it have animated blood. That is, does it not have animated blood. This is because my 8 year old loves Zelda games, but does not like games with blood in them. As a result he has not played Twilight Princess. He is really hoping that the new Zelda doesn't go down that path either (why does a Zelda game need blood?)
Why are we lucky? We get a WiiWare version of a game we've all already played on the DS, and one that has no replay value whatsover? Why didn't they make a new Phoenix Wright game?
@Destroyer360 - except that were are the demos now? We need universal WiiWare and DSiWare demos, not a few handpicked games. I'd be out of points now if we had that, and restocking. As it is I'm sitting on a bucket load of points and am afraid to spend them on games I'm not sure I'm going to like.
Their classic controller alternate is pretty nice and I think better then the standard classic controller in form. However, their nunchuck is complete and utter garbage (ours lasted about 3 weeks). So they are a mixed bag, but I suspect the remote would be a safe bet. Alas, I've already got 4 remotes and 2 WM+'s, so I don't need this, but I do kind of want it anyway as I would like to be able to do away with the separate WM+ attachment. But I'm cheap, so it's not going to happen.
It's 800 points in the US, which makes it more appealing, but I need a demo. Come on Nintendo, just give universal demos to us and be done with it. I'm sitting on a boatload of points and I've barely used any of them because I'm always worried I won't end up liking what I bought with them. If there were demos across the board I'd probably have no points left and already have restocked. What are they waiting for?
I'm with those that would prefer characters other then Mario, Yoshi, etc. We've already got them in Mario Kart. Let's see something else. But... that's not how my kids would feel. In fact if it has Mario I'd get the Wii version as that's what they'd like, and if it doesn't have Mario, I'd probably get the 360 version, because then they wouldn't care. Though if the Wii version has better local multiplayer, I'd go with the Wii version. Then again, I prefer abstract Mii's to the more realistic Avatars, so... hmm. Or, of course, none of the above if the reviews aren't so hot.
On rails shooters are a niche audience type of game, and moreover, it's a rental for most people even if they do like them because such games have little to no replay value. Of course the sales are going to be down. Probably lots of people bought Umbrella, not realizing it was just going to be an on-rails shooter. They'd then be unlikely to buy a sequel!
Madworld is a repetitive and really a bit boring game, with over-the-top gore and speech. I played it for a few hours and don't feel like I need to play it any more. I.e. it's a rental. On-rails shooters have always been a niche type game, so it doesn't seem surprising that they don't sell that great, plus they are inherently lacking in replay value. I.e. they are also rentals. Maybe they need to concentrate on making games targeted at adults that aren't rental-ware?
FYI, the Xbox 360 game 1 vs. 100 can't even get lip syncing right, and that's not just for the live host of the show, but the pre-recorded voice of the hostess.
One thing I'm unclear on about this game - does the title imply that all the trivia questions are about TV shows, or is it general trivia, or what?
Who is going to play this after Christmas? It's bad enough hearing Christmas music in November.... Given that inherently short life-span, the price is especially outrageous.
I played this with my kids yesterday. My kids love it and I had fun playing with them. I don't think I'd want to play for hours on end, but in shorter doses it's fun. I think an 8 out of 10 is a bit high, though. I'd give it a 7.
Maybe I just don't get what you mean, but those screenshots look horrible from a graphics standpoint. I'm not talking about the retro ones, but the "updated" ones. I'm not sure I've seen a worse looking game. Maybe it looks better in motion? Also I should note that I'd never heard of "Meat Boy" before this. Perhaps you have to be a fan.
I may be alone, but wii remote control for aiming is the killer feature here, and not something the 360 has. I'll take Wii remote pointing at what you want to shoot over HD graphics but akward dual-analog stick control in the 360 version. I'm looking forward to picking this up. I'm hoping we get some good Black Friday deals on it.
To play devils advocate... Madworld was advertised pretty substantially and it was a flop. Advertising doesn't seem to do the trick either, at least it sure didn't for Madworld.
I think an upscaling Wii would make sense as a quick next step... but only if there is a way to transfer our WiiWare purchases and games saves to the new console. Without that, they might as well produce an entirely new, and NOT backward compatible console, because backward compatibility will be somewhat irrelevant if we can't move our WiiWare and saves.
Any news on a US release date? This looks like it would be fun for me and the kids. I presume it has local multiplayer and not just online multiplayer? How many local players?
I've had this on preorder for a while at amazon. It's my most anticipated game of the year. I loved NSMB DS. I didn't mind the lower difficulty. In fact I think it rekindled my interest in the 2D Mario games and I've since gone back and finally played all the way through SMB3, something I'd never done before. That was a lot harder and I actually hope NSMB Wii isn't quite that hard.
I've got a $30 console code for amazon.com (US. It takes $30 off any console or handheld at amazon.com) that I have no use for. If anyone wants to trade their Doc Louis' Punch-Out code for it, let me know!
The DSi needs this. Do it now. I don't see a problem with charging for it similar to the 360's Live memberships, just don't make it more then, say, $5 per month, and make sure there is plenty of reason to have it, in the form of a ton more download and cartridge games that support internet play, and support it well.
I want to know how we'd transfer our DSiWare to a new DSi. If we can't transfer I guess I won't be buying any enhanced DSi. They never should have released the DSi if they were going to release a significant update so soon after, and especially not if there is no way to transfer your points and games to a new one.
I liked Phantom Hourglass quite a bit and am really looking forward to Spirit Tracks, but the pack-in's in this special edition are a disappointment since I already have those two figures along with a bunch of others, all purchased from play-asia.com (not available any more) about a year ago. Hopefully any special edition coming to the US has something different in it. Of course if you don't already have those figures, then they are nice.
This is nice to have, and I do have it, but like all pinball games not designed by (good) real pinball machine designers, it's a bit dull. However, it's still good for the occasional play. It's that the ruleset and playfield design are far too uninspired to give you that just-one-more-time feeling. It is much better then those awful pseudo-pinball video games, and I think it's better then Metroid Prime Pinball, if for nothing else then at least trying to be like a real machine. Unfortunately I don't think the DS is up to a Pinball Hall of Fame (due to having to rely on split screens - due to that gap, games have to be designed for it, not plastered onto it).
I really enjoyed this game when I played it. Definitely worth picking up if you haven't already and it's cheap last time I checked, so it should be a no-brainer if you like this type of game. I hope they make a new Wii entry in the series.
There are some great games on here. My problem with this and many other collections is that it includes both kid-friendly games like Root Beer Tapper (specifically a kid-friendly variant) and yet has games such as Smash TV. I can't give this to my kids without saying that they aren't allowed to play certain games on it, but realistically speaking they are going to be enchanted with that forbidden game that is just begging them to play it. Why didn't they put out two collections, one with exclusively E-rated content and then one with exclusively T+ rated content?
Sounds good, but like others I would really, really like to know if subsequent episodes will also cost $10. Hopefully nintendolife can look into this for us and give us an answer.
I can't say that the graphics (as seen in demo videos) look that good to me. It looks pretty crappy, in fact. I'm not sure that the gameplay looks like it would help matters. I'm just not seeing it. I wouldn't mind trying it, but not for 800 points. I really, really wish we had demos on WiiWare.
I don't know. I don't see the variety of art styles that is claimed, or even media. Everything pretty much looks the same. Yes, different colors and slightly different features, but overall you are just running around shooting with badly drawn art. Visually this game just looks terrible to me, and the gameplay seems pretty simplistic with nothing interesting about it at all. Maybe it's better in practice, but the trailers just aren't doing it for me. I am looking forward to reviews.
Myself, I would have really been interested in buying one of these if the price were more reasonable. I don't have a PSP, so there is no issue of having to buy games over again, and I really like having all my games on the portable device as opposed to having to take cartridges. Having said that, it sounds like the pricing of the games themselves is ridiculous too. So... for me this isn't going to happen. Sony seems to love to overprice.
I am only a short way into the game, but so far I can't agree with this review. Yes it is a very nicely done game, but are these puzzles actually fun? I can't imagine wanting to go back and play levels over again. It was fine up to 1-5 and then it just felt like a chore. Maybe as I get farther it will grow on me, but even if it does, a game that starts out just feeling like work, such that the primary feeling upon completing a level is not satisfaction, but feeling that you are glad that level is over, doesn't deserve anything near a 9/10.
I had read, though sadly can't provide a link so take this with a big grain of salt, that the developers chose not to use MotionPlus. They had the option to do so as the tools were available, but did not because they felt if they used it it would no longer be Punchout. I think I can go along with that. Punchout is all about patterns and timing (and humor).
I've purchased the game, but have to wait until my birthday for my wife to give it to me, and by that I mean the game, and not a right hook. I hope!

This is a great game, but do agree that multiplayer is an unfortunate, and maddeningly standard for DSiWare, omission. Fortunately it is a fantastic single player game, but you have to hope that there will be a sequel (or update? Yeah, right) with online and local multiplayer.
