It's too expensive and I don't want to pay for the 3D effect. If they drop the price to $150 I'll buy it, or if they release a 2DS for $150, I'd buy that. I think the 3D was a big mistake. So called 3D is a fad that's going to go away before too much longer IMHO, and then thing will really tank. As if it hasn't tanked already.
High Voltage Games has shown themselves to be pretty pathetic. I didn't have much interest in Conduit 1 or 2, but now I certainly have absolutely none. I wonder if they haven't also opened themselves up to a lawsuit.
Nintendo rarely provides anything useful in their updates. Sometimes, but mostly not. Yeah, an update to support running games from SD is long overdue... and probably will never happen now.
This could just mean that it will released on Kinect (or Move) in 2012. It's odd that they aren't announcing it for Kinect (and Move) right away. Not going to get released there?
So basically a trickle of questionable choice games, likely no demos and probably never any sales. Or is there some indication that I've missed that Nintendo finally gets the download game market?
It's funny that people are expecting the eshop to give the 3DS a boost. Nintendo has been so incredibly inept with download games and as far as I can tell there's been no sign that things are going to improve with the 3DS. Odds our they'll put out a trickle of poorly advertised games with little or no demos, and any demos will likely be available for a limited time, there won't be any sales like the Xbox Live Arcade has every week, etc. Odds are it's going to be completely irrelevant to most people, just like it is on the Wii and DSi.
The 3DS needs to drop to less then $200. Hopefully this will bring a big price drop soon. Still, the NGP is in for even more of a sales failure given it's apparently even higher price tag.
Kinect Sports is also excellent, but yes, the number of great titles for Kinect is limited right now. Only time will tell if it manages to provide reasons for people to buy more games. I'm guessing that one area where it will succeed in that regard is download titles. The Xbox is so superior to the Wii when it comes to the download service that it isn't even funny. I think that's one area where Kinect will flourish. There will be disc titles too, but the area most ripe for big Kinect-related games sales, IMHO, is in lower-priced download titles. I presume we'll start to see Indie titles that are really cheap (99 cents and such), but already there's a number of XBLA titles set to come out, even including Fruit Ninja, which I'm guessing will be an off the chart sales success.
Iwata is saying what he has to say. Kinect clearly has had an impact as the xbox has been outselling the Wii (and PS3) for a while now. I have both consoles and play my xbox a lot more. Kinect certainly needs more games, but the tech is solid, it is different and in most ways better and mire exciting (technology wise) and my sister, who has pretty much never even played their Wii, recently bought Kinect for herself after playing ours.
I wish the price wars would come to the US. But to the tune of a $100 discount. At $150 I'd bite. I finally got to try the 3DS at the Nintendo World Store in NYC and it is fun, though it didn't blow me away by any means. $250 is just too much money. It's got to come down substantially in price. Maybe $200, but definitely at $150.
I have Slingo Supreme on my iPhone and while it is a bit addicting for a while, it is just a slot machine. It's addicting for the same reasons that slot machines can be, but they aren't terribly good reasons. I got Slingo for free on my iPhone and for that price it was worth it, probably worth it even at $1. I really can not see paying $8 for the privilege.
That's some pretty sad WiiWare. If Nintendo had not been such idiots and had demos for all WiiWare from the beginning, and from day 1 for all titles, they would A) sell more good WiiWare and B) have more good WiiWare. Sigh. Well, at least I can look forward to MotoHeroz, which is a game I await with baited breath.
While I'm sure the reports are exaggerated, those saying, "you can just turn it off" are missing the point. The thing costs $250 and a big part of that is because it has glasses-free 3D. If you buy a 3DS and can't use the 3D, it seems like a bit of a waste of money, no? That's a key selling point of this handheld, so not being able to use it would would result in some pretty substantial disappointment. I'd return it in that case too.
And demos have made me buy more games then not on XBLA. The fact is that if you try a demo and find out you don't like it, that is a lost sale on a game that doesn't appeal to you, but that means you don't have a bad experience and feeling about the download service going forward is positive. That means more sales of games overall. That has certainly proven to the be case for me with Xbox Live Arcade and, guess what, I've bought way more XBLA titles then WiiWare, a huge part of that is the lack of demos (and now only a limited set of non-permanent demos).
They have a friends system and you can see what your friends are playing, but sending a message to them is only something they're considering adding? Something that, now that you you mention it, might be cool??!?? I really don't get how Nintendo can be so out of it. That and uncertainty about demos. And thinking that a global achievements system is bad (yet achievements in games are not)?!??!?
Nintendo is just completely clueless. I'm losing faith.
I have this on my iPhone and it is a good game, but for some reason it has never really clicked for me. I don't know why, but I can't stick with it. I end up finally losing a level or two and I just never feel like going back and trying it again, so I just leave it at that. My kids love it, though. They even bought it for XBLA, and that version is great. They'd probably like this version too.
I don't think there's any question that the iPhone and iPad won't kill the DS and such, but there are folks, myself included, that are playing their iPhone (and soon iPad 2) way, way, way more then our DSi, and have no plans to buy a 3DS. For me the type of games available for iOS are more in line with what I want, and that includes euro board and card games, not just Angry Birds and such, though those are fun too. With online play that I can play anywhere, any time, and when I find a few minutes to fit in a turn or two - asynchronous play and 3G connectivity - that makes that perfect. I still enjoy games like Scribblenauts, but truth be told, Scribblenauts would be even better on my iPhone and I wish that they would bring it to it. I think eventually they will, or something better then that.
What's somewhat comical is that Nintendo has been dancing with the so-called casual crowd and now they are saying that the casual crowd isn't that important? I really think Nintendo is grabbing at straws here. They're backpeddling and hoping the problem goes away.
Mind you, I think the 3DS will be a big success for them, at least in the short run. While it's true that iOS games are "shorter", generally speaking, length isn't really that different when you take into account the cost of the games. While a $40 3DS game will undoubtedly last longer then a good 99 cent to $10 iOS game, you can buy a lot more of those iOS games and end up with just as much, and like more, gameplay, and a TON more variety.
@rwq - HDMI isn't going to make the Wii look any better then it does with a component video cable. Now if you don't have a component input, that's a problem. Otherwise, just get a component cable. monoprice.com has good, cheap one.
100k doesn't really sound like that many. Verizon had, apparently that many pre-orders of the iPhone 4 in the US, which wasn't even a new phone at the time, simply now on Verizon, and they did that in only 2 hours. I know it's a phone, but it is Nintendo's declared competition and it's only one provider of the iPhone 4. Nintendo struggles to muster up such sales with a brand new handheld with glasses-free 3D, and not split up among multiple providers.
I don't play my DSi any more, pretty much. I play games on my iPhone way, way more. In fact I play games on my iPhone more then I play games on our 360, Wii, N64, PS2 and Gamecube, probably combined. There are many high quality games for iOS and at a dramatically lower cost to the buyer, and the iPhone is just so much more of a convenient platform to play on - it's small, light and I always have it with me. I'm going to be getting an iPad 2 now as well. I won't be getting a 3DS. They're asking too much for it and the games, and I say that even though the 3DS is cheaper by a wide margin then an iPad, at least the hardware - the games, of course, cost way more, and in the long run the iPad 2 is cheaper and does so much more and does it so well. Well, aside from glasses-free 3D. To me the value of the 3DS isn't there, at least not yet, while the value of the iPad 2 is patently obvious to me.
The only function which I care about, and I'm worried it doesn't have it, is the ability to log into a wifi access point and then carry that internet connection over to a game, as opposed to how it work on the DSi now - as soon as you leave the browser the connection is lost. I hope NintendoLife can shed some light on this.
I concur with a Bit.Trip compilation on disc. I'd buy that for $50 since I haven't bought any of the Bit.Trip games on the Wii (I do have Beat on my iPhone)
I tried to play this game a while back and didn't get very far before trading it in. Mind numbingly boring, and where were the Disney characters? I guess they are there, but I sure didn't see any in my time with the game. 7 out of 10? I guess this just isn't my cup of tea.
I can't say why it's so popular with certainty, but having played it at a friends house with their kids, I think it's popular because it isn't a game, so much, and instead is just what the title says: just dancing. Myself, though, I'm too much of a DDR and game person to be able to tolerate the inaccurate reading of the Wii remote. Why didn't they make JD2 use Wii Motion Plus to read it more accurately? Well, I think that's because there was no point: the large number of people who like this game don't really care that it isn't reading accurately, and probably even like that. It's a complete non-factor for them.
Hopefully the browser being able to run in the background means we can finally use it to establish a connection with a public wifi and then play a game over that same connection, something that isn't possible with the DSi and was a huge shortcoming.
This inability to stay in the 3D sweetspot issue is troublesome. Why include the 3D at all if we're just going to have to turn it off? I'm starting to think I'd rather they lowered the cost and left out the 3D. It's sounding an awful lot like an expensive gimmick addition.
And the lack of ability to have more then one account on a $250 handheld is ludicrous. My kids will not get their own 3DSs, and nor will I. At most we will have one 3DS to share. Did you get headaches like was reported by Engadget? Also, did you have to hold your arms stiff in order to keep the 3D effect from flickering away, again as reported by Engadget. Both were pretty disappointing reports to see. Hopefully it was just them....
I could have sworn my japanese DS carts work just fine on my DSi... it was only download titles that were region-ized. You can't even buy the download games in the US. Does suck, but my point is that this is a key distinction we need cleared up - does the 3DS lock out other-region 3DS and/or DS games?

Playing disc golf on regular golf courses isn't right. Were's the forest of trees to navigate and such? I wish we'd get a great disc golf specific game. Oh well.
I played the demo on XBLA, and while it's a fine game, it wasn't for me. Way to difficult and frustrating. I liked Mega Man 10 a ton more. Somehow I was willing to try and try again with MM10, but not so much with SMB.

I played the demo on XBLA, and while it's a fine game, it wasn't for me. Way to difficult and frustrating. I liked Mega Man 10 a ton more. Somehow I was willing to try and try again with MM10, but not so much with SMB.
