Re: Nintendo Download: 5th April 2010 (North America)

Crunchewy

I wish the G&W games had been released as a single, free, G&W app, with DLC purchases for the games. Or maybe have it a pay app with one G&W game included, and the rest available as DLC. The point here being so we don't end up with a bazillion separate apps. I guess there is no mechanism for DLC in DSiWare, though? Are there any DSiWare games with DLC?

I may pick up Ironclad. Does it play in English or are we stuck with Japanese text?

Re: Review: Cave Story (WiiWare)

Crunchewy

I really don't understand how this game could have gotten such a high score and even a mention that the sound track and sound effects are great, when even the development team admits that they are both messed up. One of the development team said to turn the sound effects to 1/3 volume to fix that, but that doesn't help with the other issues like missing drums. I'm not buying this game in the US unless they release a patched version that fixes all these issues. Maybe I wouldn't have cared if it was 500 points, but this thing is 1200 points and the original game is free. If you're going to make me pay for a game that can be had for free, they sure as better have everything just right.

Re: Review: Sonic Classic Collection (DS)

Crunchewy

Very disappointing review. Looks like I'll be skipping this one. They haven't even been able to get their ports to the iPhone to play without slowdown, so it's no wonder that the slower processor in the DS can't handle it. Which just means they are pretty lousy emu writers.

Re: Review: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GameCube)

Crunchewy

This and the N64 original are two of my favorite games of all time. I tend to think that the original is a little better, but both games are superb and you will want to play both of them. I actually played Thousand Year Door first. It was for my kids and I wasn't expecting to like it, just to have to sit through it with them to help them along, but in short order I was the one convincing them we should play it. I bought an N64 in part just so we could play the original. These are two of the 3 RPGs that I've enjoyed, the other being the fan translation of Mother 3. You'll note that all have extensive humor/don't take themselves seriously at all, and have an action element to them, which are big parts of what makes these games fun for me.

Re: Miyamoto Confirms Pikmin 3

Crunchewy

I recently picked up the NPC Pikmin, but haven't opened it yet. Looks like I'll need to get to it. I have my doubts that were going to see NPC Pikmin 2 in the US. I think the New Play Control line was pretty much a mistake for Nintendo. Instead of releasing new games, they released old ones, just with new controls. It was bad PR. Not that the games weren't improved, but they should have been working on new games, not old ones.

Re: Review: Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix (GameCube)

Crunchewy

It's funny, but IMHO, this game has the best music of any DDR game I've played. For me, the standard type of dance music in DDR games is really pretty atrocious stuff, but I'm fine with it because it works for a dance game, so it's good in that context. That is a matter of taste, obviously. The Nintendo music in DDR MM is awesome, and I'm really glad it doesn't have your standard DDR fare - that wouldn't have worked for this game at all. Obviously, though, your mileage may vary in that regard.

Re: Review: Picross 3D (DS)

Crunchewy

My 7 year old loves Picross DS, not so much because of the puzzles built-in or the puzzle solving, but because he can make his own puzzles and draw a more detailed picture for it, and then "solve" it by just hitting squares until the shape is revealed. I.e. he loves building the puzzle and drawing the picture associated with it. I suspect this game would be a hit with him as well, as long as you have the option of that kind of "solving", but I take it it's missing the more detailed picture option, so it might not be as much of a hit. I'll pick it up when it goes on clearance for sure, though.

Re: Earthworm Jim Wriggling Onto DSiWare

Crunchewy

Gameloft's games always feel like they took a "that's good enough" approach. At least all the ones I've tried.

And, on a relate note, this another port of an iPhone game. This has to be embarrassing for Nintendo, which as I recall, stated in the past that the iPod touch/iPhone were not competing with the DSi. Now not only is DSiWare getting titles ported over from the iPhone, but so is WiiWare! Ouch!

Re: Review: Perfect Dark (Game Boy Color)

Crunchewy

I'm probably going to download PD for the Xbox. I've never played the original nor any other version, but everybody swears it's great. Then again I have a 64 and could buy the real cart, but the 360 version is enhanced and (I think) has online play, plus with the 64 I have to fiddle with carts that stop working and need cleaning, more frequently then I'd like.

Re: Review: Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix (GameCube)

Crunchewy

This game got me into DDR. After this I bought a PS2 and then over time, every DDR game available on that platform (I don't have X2, though.) This didn't happen when the game was released. I picked it up much later, when the Wii was around and, I'm proud to say, I paid $5 for it at kmart. I really loved this game. OK, so the story mode is boring and you have to play it in order to unlock songs, but the songs in this are great if you love Nintendo music, and it is a great introduction to DDR. If you are an expert you probably aren't going to find much to like here, but even an intermediate player will find plenty to hold their attention for quite a while. I still can't complete Bowser's song (I forget the name offhand) at the highest difficulty. The gimmicks are a mixed bag, but IMHO they are better then the gimmicks in Hottest Party 2 (I don't have 3 yet). In any case you can turn them off, and a nice thing is it keeps separate high scores for with and without the gimmicks. The one big problem with this game, though I didn't know it at the time, is the lack of modifiers, in particular no ability to change the speed of the arrows. It's a lot easier to play songs with lots of steps when you increase the arrow speed to 1.5x normal. That way it's easier to distinguish them as they are further apart instead of all crammed together, even though they are moving faster. Of course there aren't a lot of songs like that in this game, but there are some that would benefit from it. Otherwise, though, I put this up there as one of my favorite DDR games.

Re: Review: Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (Virtual Console / TurboGrafx-16)

Crunchewy

I might pick this up, but I've yet to ever finish a Castlevania game (admittedly limited to DS and GBA versions) before getting tired of it and getting rid of it. I enjoy them for a while, but then it just seems repetitive and overly difficult. Still I do enjoy them for a while, and maybe this is the one I'll actually finish? I certainly wouldn't be "getting rid of it!"

Re: Reggie: Innovation Is Still Nintendo's Priority

Crunchewy

The big problem with PS3 Move (and Xbox 360 Natal) is that it didn't come in the box from the beginning. They already have a smaller market share, and now they are splintering to an even smaller market. Developers aren't going to get much bang for the buck by developing Move or Natal games because there just won't be that many people with the motion hardware. They can change that situation over time if they aren't foolish and include Move/Natal in the box with every console purchased from day 1, and don't offer versions without it any more, but still it will take time. It's like starting over again from day one.

Re: Tomorrow's World of Goo

Crunchewy

I have to admit that I've not even come close to finishing World of Goo, so I sure hope they don't make a World of Goo 2. Hopefully their obvious talents will be put toward a more addictive game. Mind you, I like what I've played of World of Goo, and I love the style, but for some reason it just never quite captures me and I don't play it very long, and now it's languished for many months unplayed. Also, note that this is only one half of the World of Goo team, and who knows if they were the main influence or not. Maybe that would be good, though.

Re: First Impressions: Rage of the Gladiator

Crunchewy

So does this support using two remotes with two motion pluses, or otherwise how are you controlling your fighter? If it uses two remotes and motion pluses, that would both be a first, and be completely awesome. I have a feeling that that's not the case though, and as such I'd really love to see an explanation of how the controls work with WM+.

Re: Review: Mega Man 10 (WiiWare)

Crunchewy

Odnetnin - at first I thought Easy mode was still very hard, but after I beat one boss (I chose the upper left one, which may not be the best choice for starting out), the game got easier. Also, while that level was hard, and a little frustrating, it was definitely doable. So as a fellow MM newb, I suggest you go for. Probably pick Sheep Man as your first boss to go after, though - he seems to be the easiest of the ones I've done so far.

Re: Review: Mega Man 10 (WiiWare)

Crunchewy

This is actually my first Mega Man game (not counting Mega Man 2 on the iPhone, but I haven't played it much yet), and so far I like it. I'm playing on Easy mode as the game is damn hard, even in Easy mode! Actually it's getting a lot easier now that I have new weapons and such, which is a little odd. Games usually get harder as you go, this one seems to be getting easier. Is that the norm for Mega Man games?

Re: Trailer: Metroid: Other M FMV Teaser

Crunchewy

I'd like some gameplay footage please. Also, I hope they don't fill the game with so many cut scenes that A) they have less space for gameplay then they needed and B) the cut scenes slow the game to a crawl.

Re: Review: Zoo Frenzy (DSiWare)

Crunchewy

I tend to think that Gameloft's games are a bit like lackluster brand-x versions of other company's games. Not necessarily bad, just not even close to great either. You can be sure you'll get something kind of fun, but not all there. Magic Castle is a good example. That game is OK, and reasonably priced on the DSi, and the camera integration is amusing (indeed probably the best part of the game), but it's not even nearly anything great. They are just going for par, and they succeed.

Re: Nintendo Download 1st March 2010 (North America)

Crunchewy

I think I'm going to pick Happy Hammerin'. The price is right, and who doesn't like whack-a-mole? This looks like a pretty fun enhancement of the concept. Also should be fun to play it with my kids. I may also pick up Mega Man 10, but if so I'll be playing in Easy mode, thank you.

Re: Mario & Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing Almost Considered a Possibility

Crunchewy

The problem, I believe, is the internal storage and the fact that nothing can run from an SD card. WiiWare and VC games stored on SD are first copied into internal memory and then run. Rock Band 2 first copies songs from the SD card into internal memory. Stuff can only be stored on SD, not directly used from it. Now maybe they can make it work via a firmware upgrade that would enable the ability to run stuff directly from SD. I don't know if there are technical issues with that or not, though.

Re: Sony Patents Universal Game Controller

Crunchewy

I don't know about this, but I do want universal controllers, especially for plastic instruments games. I hate being stuck on one console, especially when one console (the Wii in this case) gets the shaft on a game like Lego Rock Band.

Re: WiiWare Demo Program Demo Ending This Month

Crunchewy

They really need to have demos, and across the board. No "limited selection". I'm sitting on a stockpile of points and I haven't used almost any of them, because I hate being burned. I'm always worried I'm going to be disappointed and with a download there's no reselling it, you're just screwed. So they need demos as a standard for all download games, WiiWare and DSiWare.

Re: Nintendo Chief Doesn't Care for the iPad

Crunchewy

It seems obvious that Nintendo would deny working on an HD console until the last minute. If they announce an HD console long before it's ready, all that would do is dry up Wii sales. Of course they are working on an HD console. The question is only when it will be released. Next year? Year after? I can't imagine it being much longer then that, though.

Re: Nintendo Download: 25th January 2010 (North America)

Crunchewy

I don't get the Uno craze to begin with, regardless of price. Uno is a pretty boring card game that I only play if my kids want to play. Thankfully that doesn't happen too often. Playing Uno on the Wii or 360 or anything else as well? You've got to be kidding me!

Re: Luigi's Mansion to Get Sequel?

Crunchewy

I hope it's not a New Play Control game. In fact I hope we never see another such title. I want Pikmin 3 and Luigi's Mansion 2, not the old games with new controls. They need to put their efforts into making new games, not releasing old ones.

Re: Wii Play is the US's Best-Selling Game Ever

Crunchewy

This sells because it includes a remote. People buy this because they want a second remote and they figure maybe the game will be worth the extra $10. So it's not a game. It's a game + remote. I don't think it should be included in a list of best selling games as a result, only a list of best selling game+controller bundles.

Re: Review: Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland (DS)

Crunchewy

American's are lame. At least the ones are who voted against this coming to the US. I've considering importing, but the price for it is high with that route. I wish they'd just bring it out here. Oh well. Someday I'll just give in and pay the big bucks.

Re: Review: Move Your Brain: Rollway Puzzle (DSiWare)

Crunchewy

I can't say that a half-baked motion control scheme is terribly appealing. Having to find the right spot to play it at? That's going to get old. I suppose if I didn't have an iPhone I'd think otherwise, though. Something may be better then nothing, I suppose. I'd rather, though, that they made games that actually exploited what is in the DSi.

Re: Netflix on Wii confirmed

Crunchewy

Popyman - yes, however, only "unlimited" plans include unlimited netflix streaming. You get something like 2 hours of streaming per month on a non-unlimited plan, of which I think there is only one.

I'm looking forward to this as the 360's netflix streaming at 720p isn't working too well for us on our DSL connection. I'm hoping that by only trying to push 480p our way, we may get better results. I'm looking forward to finding out. I do wish we didn't have to use a disc, though. I'm not entirely convinced that in the Wii's case it's just a matter of a contract. Perhaps the Netflix client would take up too much space as well.
