Re: Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle - Nirvana For Side-Scrolling Fighter Fans

Cobalt

@Moroboshi876

The scaling is basically the result of the resolution ^^

If you have 1920 pixels width and 1080 height in 16:9 on modern TV, it means that for a CPS game ratio, it doesn't match.

Now, a CPS game runs at 384 pixels width and 224 pixels height. It means that the ratio of the image is about 1.71 when a standard 4:3 ration is more about 1.33 like the Megadrive/Genesis or 1.14 like the SNES for example.

What does that means ? Simple, the main problem here is, if the original resolution is 384x224, it means that the upscale needs to be X4.821(which is bad BTW ^^). We get 1851 pixels width for 1079 pixels height after upscale.

What do we see on screen with that Capcom Bundle ? We see an upscale resolution at 1542 x 1080 o_O.

So yeah, there is a degraded quality on modern screens. The image is "squashed" compare to the original.

An image will talk better than words ^^

Re: Alwa's Awakening Will Bring The 8-Bit Magic To Switch Next Week

Cobalt

@MikaelForslind

Yeah, I understand but do not mix view on screen and level_size.

Basically, what you said is that you wanted to "fit" the view to have tiles of 16*16 to cover the view.
I'd say that's almost a non sense, except if the game would play screen by screen ( such as Bubble Bobble for example)

But whatever, you did an AMAZING job because Alwa's Awakening is one of my favorite indie games ever...
From my perspective, you've captured the essence of the 8bit era and have transposed it with your touch.

You know, I'm more into the 32bit graphics era in general (even the game that I'm working on displays that kind of visuals ^^) but I admire how great your game looks even if you have used an 8bit colour palette. Fantastic job.

Re: Alwa's Awakening Will Bring The 8-Bit Magic To Switch Next Week

Cobalt

@MikaelForslind

Yeah, I know that the NES displays 240p, no problem with that BUT why 400 pixels for the width ?

426 pixels are requiered for a 16/9 aspect ratio...
So, two solutions then :

Or, the game won't be fullscreen.
Or, the game is gonna be stretched to fill the 26 missing pixels.

As a developer myself, I don't get the logic behind that choice, except if the plan was to bring the game on the 3DS because the resolution there, is 240x400.

Re: UK Charts Reveal That Only 2% Of NBA 2K19's Launch Sales Were On Switch

Cobalt

The thing that "shocks" me the most is not the 2% sells on Switch.

It's more when I look at several charts, it's still the same games for the Switch while every months it's new games on PS4/ONE.

Since more than a year, Zelda, Mario Odyssey, MarioKart 8 etc... The other platforms always get new Stuffs, Spiderman, Tomb Raider, Dragon Quest XI etc...

This is sad because I experienced a hole of 7 months of "nothing to play" between Xeno2 and Octopath, and now the same thing again until Yoshi... People can say what they want but you need a PS4 or a strong PC if you want to play new games... :/

Re: Wireless NES Controllers Won't Work With Other Games On Nintendo Switch

Cobalt

So, if I understand good :

_I have to pay to play online when it was free on WiiU but
_Nintendo LEND me some NES roms as a gesture of thanks but
_I have to be connected every 7 days otherwise they don't lend me the NES ROMS but
_Not only the NES roms, my saves on the cloud too but
_I have to buy the NES Controllers for 60$ like that I'd be connected but
_if I stop my subscription, even my NES controllers are not usable... o_O

_At least my smartphone will still work to "VOICE-CHAT" then... LOL

Nintendoooooo come onnnn, it's 2018... :/

Re: NES Games On Switch Playable For Up To Seven Days Without Internet Connection

Cobalt

@electrolite77 You're absolutely right electrolite !

I personally don't care because I owned already all the NES games that I like but what disturbs me is the fact that those NES games are not offered but Nintendo LEND these games to you.

From my perspective, it's disgusting because we are talking about roms of games from more than 30 years old... It gives really a bad image in terms of communication.

Re: Guide: Everything Announced In Yesterday's Nintendo Direct

Cobalt

@ClassSonicSatAm I remember especially that the SNES ports on GBA were surrounded by a prodigious amount of awesome exclusives :

_Advance Wars 1 & 2
_TLOZ Minish Cap
_Golden Sun 1&2
_Metroid Fusion
_FF Tactics Advance
_WarioLand 4
_Megaman Zero 1 2 3 & 4
_Megaman ZX 1 & ZX Advent
_Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga
_Castlevania Aria of Sorrow
_Castlevania Harmony of Dissonance
_Castlevania Circle of the Moon
etc..etc...

I'm sorry but what is happening with the Switch IS TOTALLY different.

The GBA got every months NEW games and AWESOME ONES + SOME SNES ports... The Switch gets Shovelwares like crazy + multiplats in inferior versions most of the time + smarphones ports + PS1/PS2/PS3/PS4/DS/WiiU ports and a ridiculous amount of NEW exclusives.

So, I understand what you mean with the GBA but Geez, to compare the GBA era with the Switch one... you have balls dude... This has nothing to do with.

Re: Opinion: What Did You Think Of Today's Nintendo Direct?

Cobalt

@Primarina

And I understand your position too you know.
The only difference that we have is basically the way we see the consequences, that's all...

I'm convinced there are at least 10/15 years difference between you and me and I would probably think like you if I was younger.
But, as an old guy and developer too, I'm doubting more and more about the future of gaming if it continues like that.

Ports are not a bad thing when it gives the opportunity to the younger generations to discover old games but when ports are a replacement to new titles, then it becomes dangerous.

We opened the pandora's box some years ago and the results are indisputable now, ports, remakes, remasters, DLCs, lootboxes, microtransactions, day one patches etc...etc...

I play video games since 1980, gosh almost 40 years of gaming ^^, and I experienced in real time the launches of all the systems that gamers consider as retro ( even older than the NES ) and I can tell you that the evolution is fascinating in terms of technicality but step by step we are losing the essential when it's about to create video game, .............the creativity in itself.

Re: Guide: Everything Announced In Yesterday's Nintendo Direct

Cobalt

@Anti-Matter I'm happy for the people who never played those, but like I said, somebody like me played these games already...

Ports are not bad but ONLY when they are an "option" aside of real new exclusive titles...

Basically, some ports here and there, that's fine but when you start to see that the majority of the games shown ARE ports, then it's not good, not good at all...

Re: Guide: Everything Announced In Yesterday's Nintendo Direct

Cobalt

@diablo2

You're right. I'm really doubting about the future if it continues like that.
When you know how expensive it is to make a game today, hummm... big developers are gonna choose the "ports way" because it cost 100 times less to make.

If we want this industry still alive in 20 years, I think it's important to make sure that new productions (indies, AA, AAA, Whatever...) still come. Just imagine yourself at the head of a big company.
-Choice 1 : invest 10 000 000 to make something new that could potentially flop.
-Choice 2 : invest 100 000 to make a port that be certain to be profitable.

Easy to choose, isn't it ? Espacially when you can finance 100 ports for the price of 1 big AAA...

Re: Guide: Everything Announced In Yesterday's Nintendo Direct

Cobalt

@Drussa If you read well, I said "MAYBE other people are tired to see that some players encourage the cancer THAT RUIN CREATIVITY IN MODERN VIDEO GAMES."

The meaning of my sentence was more like :

-Who's gonna care to create something new if ports sells like cupcakes ? ^^ Hope it's clearer...

I said too : "You know, I have nothing against ports but only if on the side of them there is a vast choice of new titles."

Basically, if on 34 games 20 are ports, 7 are multiplats and 7 are originals, I think the logic would be 20 originals, 7 multiplats and 7 ports... then NO PROBLEM...

Re: Guide: Everything Announced In Yesterday's Nintendo Direct

Cobalt

@Drussa This is funny because you have the right to be tired of people who just point FACTS that on 34 games there are 20 ports but you don't understand that MAYBE other people are tired to see that some players encourage the cancer that ruin creativity in modern video games.

Because YES, people like you who defend all these ports and BUY them, you're gonna get what you deserve in some years... meaning ONLY PORTS.

Video games is probably your passion but it's a business...dude
Do you remember some years ago when a lot of Nintendo fans explained how different it was on Nintendo platforms because of original games and different state of mind etc... ?

Look how it is today... I even don't have to demonstrate anything because it's so obvious...

In case you don't get the message, just tell me when in the Nintendo history after less than 2 years a NEW system had more ports than exclusive new games for it from Nintendo ? When ?

So I let you think about the future now, because if today it's already like that, what will be the next step ? 80% of ports ?

You know, I have nothing against ports but only if on the side of them there is a vast choice of new titles. Let me tell you that it's sadly not the case...

Re: Guide: Everything Announced In Yesterday's Nintendo Direct

Cobalt

@ClassSonicSatAm They don't...

_Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu & Evoli Remake of Pokémon Yellow
_Cities Skylines Port of 2015

_Civilization VI Port of 2016
_Warframe Port of 2013
_Katamari Damacy Reroll Port "remastered" Port of 2004

3ds
_Luigi’s Mansion Gamecube Port of 2001
_Mario & Luigi RPG 3 Remake of a 2009 DS game
_Kirby : Epic Yarn Wii Port of 2010

So, 20 ports on 1 Direct... Period !

Re: Guide: Everything Announced In Yesterday's Nintendo Direct

Cobalt

The only thing I see is : 20 ports in 1 Direct...

I'd like to be in the same state as some dudes here but it's not the case at all.
I didn't know when I bought my Switch that I was buying a retrogaming console, I thought it was a brand new home console with a portable factor... :/

Re: Opinion: What Did You Think Of Today's Nintendo Direct?

Cobalt

@jcgonzmo

Switch

_Super Mario Party Not a Remake but a Mario Party is a Mario Party...
_Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu & Evoli Remake of Pokémon Yellow
_Super Smash Bros Ultimate Not a 100% port but really similar to Smash 4
_Cities Skylines Port of 2015
_NBA 2K19 Multiplat inferior
_Capcom Beat’em Up Bundle Ports of arcade games Eshop only
_FIFA 19 Multiplat inferior
_Starlink : Battle for Atlas Multiplat
_LEGO DC Super-Villains Multiplat
_Just Dance 2019 Multiplat
_Diablo III Eternal Collection Port of 2012
_Civilization VI Port of 2016
_Warframe Port of 2013
_Katamari Damacy Reroll Port "remastered" Port of 2004
_NBA Playgrounds 2 Multiplat
_Team Sonic Racing Multiplat inferior
_New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe Wii UPort of 2012
_Town Cool but we saw an idle animation and that's it...
_Deamon X Machina Cool but ugly and framerate problem with multiplayer
_Yoshi’s Crafted World Cool
_Luigi’s Mansion 3 Cool but again we saw almost nothing
_Animal Crossing Not interested at all but again we saw nothing
_Final Fantasy XV Pocket Edition Smartphone Port
_The World Ends With You DS Port of 2007
_World of Final Fantasy Maxima PS4 port of 2016
_Chocobo’s Mystery Dungeon : Everybuddy ! PS1 port of 1997
_Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remaster Gamecube Port "Remastered" of 2003
_Final Fantasy VII PS1 port of 1997
_Final Fantasy IX PS1 port of 2000
_Final Fantasy X & X-2 PS2 port of 2002
_Final Fantasy XII : The Zodiac Age PS4 Port of 2017 already a remaster of a 2006 game

3ds

_Luigi’s Mansion Gamecube Port of 2001
_Mario & Luigi RPG 3 Remake of a 2009 DS game
_Kirby : Epic Yarn Wii Port of 2010

34 games : 20 ports + 7 Multiplats + 7 New games (only Luigi's Mansion 3 and Town are "new")
When I just focus on facts and I see 20 PORTS on the same Direct, it's just no for me...
I respect the people who think that it's great but me, no I can't applause on that...

Ow, and where are the "famous unannounced Nintendo games for 2018" ?

Do you remember that we got :

_a Metroid Prime 4 teaser, since then, silence.
_a Bayonetta 3 teaser, since then, silence.
_a From Software unknown kind of horror game, since then, silence.

So, yeah I'm really disappointed because the reality is that if you are a newcomer in the wonderful world of video games,
yeah, a lot of games of that list are knew for you but for somebody like me it's just hell on earth.

I already played the majority of these games... I never experienced so much ports in a so short period.

I feel like my Switch is not a new system at all, but basically a retrogaming handheld.

Re: Video: Five Features Included With The Nintendo Switch Online Membership

Cobalt

Just be careful with your saves when you use the cloud with Nintendo Switch Online. If you save your datas and you stop to pay one time or another, your saves are gone !

I quote "
Q.

After my Nintendo Switch Online subscription expires, will my Save Data Cloud files and Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online save data be erased?
A.

Save data stored with Save Data Cloud cannot be kept outside of the duration of your Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online also uses the Save Data Cloud, so the same applies. However, if you keep the Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online save data saved locally on your Nintendo Switch console, then you can use it again if you purchase another membership.
