Re: Round Up: The Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl Reviews Are In

Brydontk

@Arawn93 It's not about "arbitrarily deciding etc etc etc". My point in putting Let's Go in those time periods is that the game's quality DOES change depending on when it comes out. It's not something that's decided, it's an unconcious thing.

Kirby games have recently been getting mediocre reviews by being more of the same. But if they were the first game? Changes things. Theyve never been bad games, but by the standards of everything coming out around it, it matters. Saying that games should only be weighed "objectively" is silly. For example, would Pokemon fans be ANYWHERE NEAR AS BITTER if it werent for the fact that Zelda has evolved, Mario has evolved, God of War has evolved, Smash Bros have evolved, Animal Crossing has evolved, but Pokemon appears stuck in place? Probably not.

Re: Round Up: The Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl Reviews Are In

Brydontk

@Arawn93 Not convinced it's reactionary. I just think people hit Pokemon Fatigue at different rates. I was one of the people vehemently defending Pokemon from criticism in Gen V when people started saying it got stale. But man the fatigue and disillusionment hit me hard in Gen VI.

Not to mention, the context of release timings matter a ton. Let's Go probably got an 8 out of 10 because it was the first Poke game on switch, it had that nice shiny HD quality, following pokemon was back, etc etc. Even if in the grand scheme of things it was pretty mediocre, the release had a lot going for it. Three Switch releases in, however, with no change to the formula and some of the updates being walked back? Yeah the 6 makes sense.

Nowadays when I see the 8 or 9s from reviews and I read them, it's usually, "It's great to play Pokemon again!" But how long will that last? If it werent for Arceus trying something new, I'd be pretty confident next year would be the year we started seeing 6's and 7's across the board.

Re: Review: Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl - A Middling Pair Of Remakes

Brydontk

@Anti-Matter I get that, and I'm a big JRPG fan, most of them have "permanent exp share". The problem with Pokemon is they haven't figured out how to do that while keeping the game challenging. The battles aren't designed that way. I'm playing Shin Megani Tensei now and I absolutely love it and IT shares exp through the party while keeping it challenging. But because Pokemon is not designed to work that way. Literally, for this franchise, I'd just like a button to turn it off like they have had in all non-switch games.

Re: Review: Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl - A Middling Pair Of Remakes

Brydontk

@Anti-Matter "Nothing we can do but accept that fact"

Well that's not true. Consumers like you are of the belief that we owe companies their business, but it's the other way around. They need us . So criticism from consumers is extremely important. I don't get why people like you roll over and go, "Yeah! As long as it has Pokemon in it I'll buy it!"

Fans deserve better. YOU deserve better

Re: Review: Pokémon Brilliant Diamond And Shining Pearl - A Middling Pair Of Remakes

Brydontk

@Anti-Matter Agreed... So give players a button to turn it on or off. Simple =/

My annoyance at Pokemom games these days is that features that make it easier are permanent. Can't turn the exp share off, and if I want pokemon to follow me. Then I have to be OK with them gaining god-like powers of shaking off status effects, maintaining 1HP on random hits, and dodging.

Re: Introducing Pokémon Legends: Arceus, An Open-World Prequel To Diamond And Pearl

Brydontk

@Brydontk @Wexter @Yorumi Wow I missed a bunch while I was gone haha. Well the thing is, I'm not of the opinion that Legends will replace the main games, although I want it to. I doubt Gamefreak will give up their giant tournament events in exchange for innovative gameplay. But my main pushback was the idea that "you can't change the core gameplay of Pokemon". Sure you can! They've messed with the idea a ton of times in the spin-offs!

And I agree that Final Fantasy XV's combat wasn't the best, but I believe that coming up with new ideas and tweaking it is better than just doing the same thing over and over again. Trial and error leads to good products. Mario had plenty of duds before they made Odyssey and so did Zelda. But Pokemon's been playing it safe for yeeeears. Developers have even come out and said that they've wanted to do a ton with the franchise but the company told them to walk it back so they could stay within the lines. So what happened is, yes, they came out with consistent pokemon games but the formula's been getting staler and staler for a lot of fans.

And really, the core of Pokemon is not the gameplay, it"s the concept of the game. You're in a world with a bunch of mythical monsters that you can capture and utilize to fight other mythical monsters. I see no reason why you can't take that and give it a Dragon Quest XI type of gameplay or even what Pokken did or Persona 5 Strikers and do a different genre altogether, or a Ni No Kuni type of gameplay (In fact, Ni No Kuni already did it). For me, I made the original comment because it seems jarring to kind of have it half-way between both. Like, going from real-time action until the battle starts where both parties jump into a static position until it's their turn to move could potentially break the immersion with this type of gameplay. It's fine when there is no action otherwise, like with the Wild Area, but when you can throw pokeballs in the overworld and roll around and, from the looks of it, launch a pre-emptive action rpg type of attack, it just seems... odd.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The February 2021 Nintendo Direct, Then?

Brydontk

This Direct confirmed to me that Nintendo fans complain about everything. I've defended against it, and still can't stand the fans who complain about complainers, but this Direct was MASSIVE. I'm not a fan of everything they announced on the direct, but look at what they announced!

A new character for Smash, No More Heroes 3, Splatoon 3, Skyward Sword HD, a strategy RPG follow-up of Octopath Traveler, a couple new IPs and ports of two EXTREMELY popular games: Fall Guys and Outer Wilds. And that was only PART of the presentation!

It didn't have the things I was looking for, but what is Nintendo supposed to get from the complaints? They made SEVERAL huge announcements!

Re: Switch Owners "Most Likely" To Own A Rival Console, 2020 Study Shows

Brydontk

@sixrings Yeah and as far as the consumer goes, that's inconvenient. But for the business it's a wise move because they're not technically competing with Sony or Microsoft which is why gamers typically get a Nintendo console in addition to the other two as opposed to getting a Nintendo console instead of the other two.

Re: Random: The NSO Icon On The Switch Home Menu Is Driving Some Users Crazy

Brydontk

@SMUGSLOTH69 Personally, I actually don't mind the "online" bit because I do understand that they're trying to advertise their service; the "online" under the icon can distinguish it from the two other buttons that have some color to them. So if they made the button grey, but the icon and the word "online" stayed red to draw attention but not so much that it's a neon billboard for NSO, then I feel like it would fit in with the consistency of the UI design and I doubt people would have issue with it.

Re: Random: The NSO Icon On The Switch Home Menu Is Driving Some Users Crazy

Brydontk

I totally agree.

I'd be fine with it if it blended with the other buttons but the bright red screams, "LOOK AT ME" whenever the UI's opened. Which at best is just extremely distracting, but at worst, seems manipulative, like, "BUY AN NSO SUBSCRIPTION!"

They should take a cue from the last tweet and use one of those more subtle button designs.

EDIT: (Not to mention, this is an extremely kid-friendly console. Anyone else think that it's kind of a problem that the new shiny red button on the main menu is simultaneously an advertisement and a paywall?)

Re: Soapbox: Here's How I'd Fix The Pokémon Series

Brydontk

I feel like Pokemon Conquest nailed the postgame. When you beat the main story, you unlocked side stories. Something awesome I'd want from Pokemon Conquest is the option to play sidestories post-game. What if once we beat the game, we get the option to continue the main file if we wish, and can do so at any point, but could play as other people?

We could play as Lance, for example, with his little Dratini and play a side-story with his origins as a champion, play as the little bugcatcher on route 2 who feels devastated at his loss from the main char and gets challenged to a battle that boost his spirits up, play as Nessa who gets in a pokemon battle with a rival model in her industry.

The possibilities are endless! Pokemon Conquest nailed this perfectly! There were side-stories that were extremely short and there were side-stories almost the length of the entire main campaign. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the main games did this?

(Plus, in the age of the Switch, why isn't there something like, a stadium mode? Where you can select pokemon you've caught and raised and split-screen battle with a friend)

Re: Soapbox: Here's How I'd Fix The Pokémon Series

Brydontk

@Xaessya I think the gripe about the post-game is because the main game is overwhelmingly linear and DOESN'T have that many side activities. Plus the previous post-games in one or two gens were really good. So if you're being held by the hand then released once the main game's over, you sort of look forward to more content afterwards
