Nintendo of Japan is doing a solid job sharing tons of detail for Monolith Soft's upcoming Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and we're lapping up every little bit of detail, especially when it comes to combat.
The Xenoblade series is known for having a plethora of systems to dive into, and with each entry, there's only been more and more layered on top. So Nintendo has given us a little look at the basics of battle. This gives us a few new details, and expands on the information the company shared with us last week, though a lot of the information will be familiar to Xenoblade veterans.
First up on the blog update — which has been helpfully translated by RPG Site — is the mention of Blades. Xenoblade fans will remember the Blade system from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, and Nintendo actually tweeted about this late last week.
Soldiers of Keves and Agnus can materialise the weapons they use in battle, known as Blades, at will. Each soldier’s Blade is a reflection of them, so they might take different forms such as swords, guns, shields, or spears!
We're sure this is getting some fans' brains ticking — some people are already drawing comparisons between the Blades materialising out of fire and Pyra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 — but it'll be interesting to see how the Blade system ties into the game's Class system.
Speaking of classes, similarly to its predecessor, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 brings back the roles of Attacker, Defender, and Healer. These do pretty much what you expect them to, but we'll go into more detail below this cute little diagram, which shows what is likely the assumed starting role for each character. Noah and Sena are attackers, Mio and Lanz are defenders, and Eunie and Taion are healers.
The Attacker role is obviously best for dealing heavy damage, both from the side and the rear — it's always been valuable to take advantage of this in Xenobalde's combat, so it's no surprise this is returning here. The most important role for an Attacker is to ensure they deal a lot of damage while avoiding enemy attacks, which is where the next role comes in handy.
Defenders — think Reyn and Dunban from Xenoblade Chronicles — are good at guarding and evading. Their job is to attract enemy aggro and take the brunt of the damage, or evade enemy attacks, so they're built to last in battle. As a result, a lot of their skills focus on stunning enemies and attracting their attention.
Of course, there's always the Healer role, who works on supporting the party with healing spells and buffs. Healing can draw enemy aggro, so they should stay on the outskirts of battle, as they're much squishier than other roles.
Nintendo also dived into some other familiar systems present in previous Xenoblade games, but these are good reminders for fans and nice little primers for newcomers.
First is the target line, which indicates who the enemy is targeting. If the line is red, that means it's targeting an Attacker or a Healer, but if it's focusing on a Defender, the line will be blue. This is what you want.
A few Healer skills only heal within a limited radius, one of these being Eunie's Healing Circle. If used, Eunie will place a circle on the floor which gradually heals the health of any allies who are standing within it. In Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Healers are also the only role who can revive fallen party members, so you might want to have two Healers in your party just in case one falls.
We're back to these adorable diagrams now to talk about what Nintendo is calling "flexible formation". Really, this is just advice to make sure that your Defender is in front of the enemy, and your Healer is close to the party — but not too close to take aggro or damage — to allow the Attacker to make the most of their best damage skills and damage bonuses.
One extremely cool new feature is the ability to sheath weapons during combat. Having your weapon out makes your character run slower, so to move a bit faster, you can temporarily (and magically, by the looks of the below clip) sheath your weapon to carry out a "quick move", which looks like a little dash.
The last little tip Nintendo shared was something we touched on yesterday — the ability to swap between characters at the touch of a button. This lovely quality of life feature is almost immediate, so you can chop at change as you see fit.
Phew! That's a lot of information. Thank you to RPG Site for translating the information. It looks like Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is building upon the foundations of the three previous games while adding small things like quick character swapping and faster combat movement options. And this is only the start! We haven't seen much of the Class system or what the Ouroboros will entail, but even these familiar little insights are enough to get us excited.
You can check out more clips over on Nintendo of Japan's recent blog update down below. Otherwise, let us know what you think of what you've seen of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 in the usual place!

Why bother playing this game when you can just play dozens and dozens of Kemco games that have rich fantasy worlds, memorable characters, high quality graphics, beautiful melodies and award-winning stories that will forever stay in the hearts of players everywhere.
Yep, this game is dead in the water.
@Kid_Sickarus Hopefully this game has a decent tutorial, with xenoblade 2 I didn’t really get any part of the blade system until about halfway through the game
I'm loving the amount of combat related information that's being shown! My hype for the game keeps going up 😂
Man oh man
This gonna be best Game of my life
Change characters mid battle, a dash move, freely customizable classes, this will definitely be my new favourite game on the switch!
Ah, yes. As if Pyra's character couldn't be written as any more subservient she is literally a slave to the main character.
@Erigen You KNOW them KEMCO sponsored articles is the only thing keeping this website afloat. Don’t rock the boat 🙏🙏🙏
Never understood the hate for it, but I always like combat in XC games. This looks slightly different from 2 because it appears you control the character with the weapon and they attack directly, akin to the first game.
Anyway, my body is ready for XC3.
"Soldiers of Keves and Agnus can materialise the weapons they use in battle, known as Blades, at will"
Well, I wished for XC3 to have a lot of supporting Blade characters like in XC2, and voila - it sounds like technically EVERYONE is a Blade now!😄
Also, in case this franchise didn't give me enough FFXIII vibes as it is, revives are healer class exclusive now. Although I might potentially have mixed feelings about it for once...at least after 5+ attempts at one boss fight.😆
I need more chibi Xenoblade characters in my life, they're so CUTE.
I find it hilarious by the way how the 'Blades' in 3 are.... well, blades. Actual weapons. Instead of.... you know what.
just tive me this bloddy gaaaame! hahaha! I simply love the XC soundtracks also!!
No interest in this series. Far too repetitive and drawn out. We've had three entries on the Switch already. Time for something a bit different I feel.
@Jamie_R yeah, it's too bad these are the only games on Switch... you would think someone would release something else for the system, but no such luck...
This game is going to be truly wonderful. The combat looks to be a solid improvement over that of 2, and possibly almost as good as 1. The exploration promises to be the most epic yet, as we might have a truly open world like XCX but with a great story also. As always, the soundtrack will be amazing. How awesome they've moved it up! No one does that! 😂
Already looks better than XC2.
heres a question from everyone wens the special edition going to up for preorder for this game.
Honestly, XC3 seems like it's improving on XC1 and XC2 in some really key ways. I preferred XC1 in almost every way, including combat, though the original game's Art Pallet was definitely a less streamlined control scheme than XC2's arts mapped to face buttons. I like that they're taking some of the combat controls from XC2 here.
XC2's combat system, while theoretically quite deep and interesting, was incredibly hard to parse without fairly extensive external resources. Really essential mechanics were not explained anywhere in game, and even for the parts that explained, it was often unclear what optimization would look like. This, combined with the vast customization options, meant it was very tough for me to feel like I was able to make interesting or smart build decisions in that game.
From what we've seen so far, XC3's combat seems like it will be more "legible" than XC2's. It looks like there will be more customization options than in XC1 (though maybe not quite as much as in XC2), but the various character/class roles seem to be more clearly defined, which I hope will make it easier to tell whether a particular setup is good or not.
@OnlyItsMeReid They gave you the tutorials at the start of the game. They do it in all Xenoblade games. The problem is they give it to you all at once. It's just too much to process so you forget about it until you're halfway through the game and look up a tutorial online. They should really just add a combat tutorial option to the main menu.
I love how the meaning for the word "blade" changes in every game.
Though never said, I like to imagine that in XC1, the "blade" part of Xenoblade is just the Monado.
In XCX B.L.A.D.E. was an acronym for "Builders of the Legacy After the Destruction of Earth," so a very important organization to help the humans survive on a new planet after almost being wiped out by being in the crossfire of a war between 2 alien races.
XC2 Blades were sentient weapons that could grant their drivers awesome weapons and powers. Though not everyone had the potential to summon blades, and Nopon in general were apparently out of luck of being able to do so.
In XC3, it's just the weapons they wield on a day to day basis in these armies. I wonder if the weapons that more important characters wield are more special in some way than those wielded by the average soldier.
@wanghosom
"Change characters mid battle"?
Did they ever say that? I thought it was only supposed to be outside of battle, so that you don't need to use the menu all the time just to switch characters.
@Kirgo Yup, it was confirmed in a post from the japanese website
That's cool and all but uh ... how about they bring back the Skells (Mech Suits) from Xenoblade Chronicles X?
My issue with Xenoblade as a whole is you very rarely have to use the systems they've put in place. Xenoblade X and 2 have so much going on when in battle, but you win 98% of the time by doing completely random blade combos. And you win pretty quickly as well, so outside of the optional superbosses and late game stuff, there's very little reason to learn.
Personally I think we got enough info for the game, I just want it to release already now.
That's cool. Monolith Soft always manages to tweak the battle systems between games, keeping it feeling fresh, but also staying with core system.
@Fizza In the original Xenoblade, the blade was... Well, the Monado blade XD
Is it July 29th yet :-'(
@Erigen What are you on about?
@RadioHedgeFund I feel like you saw Dunkey's video on Xenoblade 2 and that's your only experience on the game. The idea of be a "subservient slave" is so untrue its funny.
I will always have time for the exploration and music of this series (although some of X was very grating) but I've never really been that taken with the combat. The original was solid but 2 just did not click for me at all.
I found Xenoblade Chronicles 2's battle system very confusing to begin with and don't get me started on Blade Combos but once I got the hang of everything I just had a blast playing it. Dead in the water? hardly and tbh nobody here is in a position to cast judgement seeing as the game isn't even out yet.
@Dav Don't mind him he's just looking for stupid likes.
@Dav Then there's me who only bought it because of how insane Dunkey made it out to be, and I was not disappointed. I only wish I would have saw his video on Octopath Traveler before I bought that. That game was extremely disappointing.
@Erigen This game is dead in the water cause it doesn't cater to you?
Unless you were being sarcastic.
@iLikeUrAttitude
You can't prove anything. 😏
@Erigen Congrats, you played yourself on that one.
@Mauzuri "Eh.. I'm still anxious about the battle system. It was great in XC1; Handled slightly better in X... But godawful in XC2." ---well said. I hope they've got it right this time.
@wanghosom
Oh nice, that is even better then!
@Dav Nope, I finished the game. I found Pyra and Mythra my biggest concern with the game as deep down the 2 are depicted more on the basis of sexual fantasy tropes than actual, well defined characters. Pyra is depicted as a shy subservient and Mythra a petulant domineering bitch.
You could argue that the shy/petulant are 2 sides of the same coin but that character is also hyper sexualised.
Compared to the arcs Melia and Sharla got in the original it is night and day.
@AndyC_MK111 It's the 4th Xenoblade game, but it's okay, both the fans and Nintendo pretend the second one doesn't exist.
@Jamie_R
There are a lot of rpgs and jrpgs on the system. You speak like the Xenoblade series is all we have on that front.
@Mauzuri Agreed. Actually the soundtrack is probably the thing I'm least worried about. Xenoblade Chronicles games always have amazing music. Though I've soon some commenters make the point that the New L.A. music from XCX became a little repetitive after a while, a point with which I don't really disagree.
@RadioHedgeFund You totally missed the point and only saw them on the basic surface level. Watch this
https://youtu.be/lKth1ZiCg-s
@Erigen Reading this comment tells me your very ignorant and unintelligent lmao.
@Haruki_NLI Nobody pretends XC2 doesn’t exist but haters. Xenoblade 3 is a sequel to both xenoblade 1 and 2.
@Jamie_R is this a troll comment or what? This the second switch made xenoblade game, not the third. Then you talk about wanting something new, lmao I can tell you never played the past games so cut the BS. But pikmin gets a pass for you tho, with it’s the same thing 3 times, bet you will be all over pikmin 4 when that’s out.
@infamousredxii
Everyone seems to get it except you.
Also, are you insinuating that playing Xenoblade Chronicles immediately means that you are an intelligent person?
@RadioHedgeFund I always hated that their sense of self was so hinged on Rex (a character I am also not fond of) and that they never grow truly into their own person (despite the hint of this person) they are still fractured and dependent upon the weakest character in the game. But because it’s a romance (sexual) fantasy that’s supposed to be considered a good story hook. I pretty much ignored them and Rex as much as possible.
