Boils down to just not being enough.
More than what I expected. They launched huge titles in an all out firing squad in 2017, it'd been dumb to expect that level or better.
May not effect me, but I did expect some info on Metroid Prime 4. Like a trailer allowing a story to be teased.
I’m happy with it so far, being a huge fan of Smash. I can’t imagine how disappointing this year must be for people who don’t care for that franchise. Their showing was just plain sad apart from Smash Bros. They clearly put all their eggs in that basket.
7.8 - Too much Smash Bros.
as i said it was hit or miss E3 for Nintendo.
that being said, i'm giving it a 8/10 only Because of Smash, (which they focus way to much on.) but it would have been a 7/10 otherwise.
Not sure that “No Metroid Prime 4 @e3” really needs to be included in a list of e3 articles...
Glad that have so many games already, nothing groundbreaking there (in article) for me.
There will be more directs coming soon. Nintendo does not make just one announcement per year.
Fire Emblem, Mario Party, Overcooked and Smash were the highlights. They just spent way too long talking about Smash Bros. If you don't like Smash, I'm sure you were all jamming your hands into a table to stay awake waiting for it to end — then the Direct was over.
@thesilverbrick - Gotta ask ourselves though, with Mario and Zelda done, and Pokemon mainline and Metroid next year, what baskets could have been there?
@Prof_Yoshtonics - 2017 set the bar very very high, even MS this year didn't touch Nintendo 2017. How on earth did everyone look at that and go, "This is base level expectations here on out.?"
Even as a fan of Smash, it was just too much of the same thing. I was looking for something more exciting than an analysis of every fighter in the game.
I gave it 5 / 10 for too much Smash Bros , no Animal Crossing for Switch, no detailed trailer for upcoming 3DS games (Luigi Mansion, Captain Toad, etc).
It’s odd you know, many of us went into this E3 incredibly excited for Smash, yet we got that and some other things like a more proper Mario Party and a brand new awesome looking FE game. And still, it felt like not enough was done for some reason.
Hollow Knight and Octo DLC both coming out during e3 was the most exciting part of e3 for me.
Smash is great and all but aside from Ridley there weren’t many “wow” moments in the whole show... kinda boring overall. 5/10
Interesting how little there is to actually talk about. If you're not into SSB (like I'm not) or Pokemon (nope), there really isn't anything from Nintendo worth talking about until 2019. You'd have thought that after they consolidated their development teams they'd have done a better job of keeping games in the pipeline so that they could release two or three major titles a year. Nope.
@Paraka I really wanted to be playing Fire Emblem and Yoshi this year. No More Heroes too. I didn't expect MP4 but, some news on it would have been nice. Where's Retro's new game? Where's AC and F-Zero? Warioware? Bayonetta 3? For me Smash is just okay. Don't hate it, don't love it. I have Captain Toad on WiiU. Aces and Splatoon aren't really my thing. Pokemon just looks so basic and "GO"-ish. So I'm looking forward to the Xenoblade expansion and Super Mario Party. That's really it this year from Nintendo. There are a swathe of 3rd party titles I'm interested in but, I really wanted more from Nintendo.
Way too much Smash. I'm not a huge fan but I like it enough. Nothing for 3DS. In lieu of Prime 4 news it would have been nice to have the Prime Trilogy ported to Switch.
@Paraka
What other games? Why does it seem that all we expect from Nintendo anymore are hits from their existing IP lines? I'd love to see Nintendo release an entirely new game play concept. Hell, even if we had gotten an old IP I'd have been thrilled if they'd done a new Wave Race, F-Zero, 1080, Pilotwings, or Excitebike. But we got a handful of (to me) really, REALLY uninteresting games. It's like Nintendo simply can't produce enough content, which is unfortunate because they still can't get 3rd parties to put AAA content on the platform with any consistency.
I love Smash, but this felt like Smash 4 Deluxe. Not a big fan of rehashing everything every time. Give me something new.
Where is Shin Megami Tensei V btw?
@DockEllisD I could definitely see that. Hopefully NMH makes it out by this Fall sometime.
The lack of any news on Spyro: Reignited Trilogy on Switch was a major disappointment to me. If we'd just had that confirmation, it would have absolutely made my E3.
@Prof_Yoshtonics - But how do you think this would be a reality? And why couldn't that same practice bring Metroid Prime 4 this year as well if they could do it for FE?
30 chefs on a pot don't make awesome soup immediately.
Though, what I saw of FE gives me hope for Advance Wars in the future the way they presented it.
@AirElephant - You listed personal favorites, which I can safely say you and I can be friend about, cause I too want F-Zero back.
But that as a killer app to make the E3 "great?" No, for us two that'd be a guarantee, but widely it'd be panned as much of a non-issue as Mario Tennis and Party. To think otherwise would be outright foolish. The wave of discontent would been shifted to the no-Waverace, no-new IP and no-Mario Stikers camps.
Only other killer system seller that COULD have gotten a response that we would immediately old hat would been AC, and considering that EAD teams just finished their projects last year it would be hard pressed to announce something this year without the riot following that it wouldn't be releasing the same time. Which would bring us back to this very spot.
Ahem. Did everyone forget about the awesome Daemon ex Machina?! This probably was the highlight for me and proof that Nintendo are really working on something new.
I think the direct was good for what it showed. You can really tell they are going all in with Smash. I know Smash Bros isn't everyones thing but the people that don't care are probably far outnumbered by the people who do care. Its not hard to see why they wouldn't show something like Metroid or Animal Crossing considering those games are likely still in early development stages or perhaps Nintendo felt it would be better to talk about them in a future direct so they wouldn't get eclipsed by Smash
@ekwcll they do yes,but they should have done all that Smash info in it's own direct later in the year instead of 25mins, dragging the whole thing to a halt. What's more alarming was the complete lack of any third party offering of all the stuff that was shown in prior presentations. Got to wonder if Wolfenstein 2 will be a last big release. I can only imagine it could be the case because of the storage issues and the expense of larger cartridges that is still an issue. I have no interest in Smash so it was a complete let down for me. It was bang average with no third party shown,no metroid info,bayonetta 3 a no show and nothing whatsoever about Retro. Still no release date for dark souls and more delays. Dont know why they bothered
It's quite telling that the two most commented upon articles yesterday were Damo's soapbox about E3 leaving us wanting more and the one about Metroid 4 being AWOL this year.
Yes, Nintendo said this E3 would be focused on Smash, but it didn't mean 66% of the presentation had to be. The E3 when they focused on BotW had more announcements than this year's.
They seem to rotate the "big game". If you didn't like Zelda you were upset two years ago, if you didn't like mario you were upset last year, if you don't like smash you are upset this year. I do like the fact that they pick one game for a deep dive though. I likely would have passed on smash this year but the deep dive has prompted me to pick it up.
@thesilverbrick
That's kinda where I am at... Smash is fun to play solo for a little while, but then get's stale. I don't have big gaming get togethers, and online players would probably be too serious for my liking. Having said that, Smash really isn't my cup of tea, and the show was a bit of a let down.
Daemon ex Machina was the only thing I liked. Splatoon DLC early is nice, but waiting a month wasn't exactly killing me. There's a whole list of games I wanted to see but were ignored:
Yoshi
Bayonetta 3
Pikmin 4
Metroid Prime 4
Retro's game
Smash looks great but it's not my thing.
@PlayedNSlayed, lack of third party offering? Are you serious? not only it was shown in the direct, but if you look in the e3 list of games, you will see games not announced that are coming for the switch.
I played a lot of Smash on the WiiU and 3DS and whilst I enjoyed the presentation, I was deflated to see the pre-order price of £60 on Amazon UK. I really can’t see myself splashing out on it for a third time at that price.
Fire Emblem was the highlight for me, but 2019 (before slippage) means there’s little to be excited about on Switch at the moment that I haven’t already played to death on WiiU.
I was personally pretty pleased with the Direct. As a huge Smash fan the "Everyone is here" part made me lose my mind. Fire Emblem looks promising presentation wise (though I'll need to see more of the actual gameplay to decide if it has the depth I want) and though the delay is personally quite sad, I think the spring release will be much better for sales than the already constricted holiday season. Also, Xenoblade was my favorite game from last year and the DLC looks fantastic. Overall it was quite enjoyable for me, though there was a severe lack of surprise outside of Smash stuff.
However, Fire Emblem and Xenoblade are relatively more niche than some, and some people are just not fans of Smash. So I can definitely see why others would be disappointed. There was a severe lack of variety here.
I was really hoping for a big finale like they did with the Switch presentation keeping Breath of the wild for the end.
The content was good but nothing surprising. I wish they kept Mario Tennis Ace secret until E3 or at least show some early footage of Metroid prime, even if it's a 5 seconds video (and 30 seconds of logo)
Should we expect something new and exciting from Nintendo Treehouse day 2? i don't know how this works
@dimi They have done smaller announcements in the Treehouse in the past. But temper your expectations.
Big eshop sale tomorrow including BOTW and Splatoon 2.
Smash not really for me so was left feeling a little disappointed. I feel it was missing a surprise reveal at the end. Like maybe MK8D DLC or Retro’s game. Anyway there’s plenty in my massive backlog to keep me entertained. I am concerned for Pikmin4 though. Fingers crossed for a Metroid Samus Returns style reveal today.
It's clear that some of the major players, mainly Japanese, don't want to reveal all their games, secrets and reveals in one E3 conference. Which is fine as there are other events and Nintendo directs throughout the year, but there still needs to be enough news and surprises for the majority of people to get excited about. And unfortunately there wasn't, I thought it was very poor. And the presentation was also limited and cheaply done.
@Paraka There are plenty of baskets left. The could’ve given us a simple trailer for Metroid. Animal Crossing could be huge on Switch. Where’s Pikmin 4? Odyssey could use some DLC. There are many other IPs they could resurrect, like Kid Icarus or F-Zero. What’s Retro been doing for the past four years? Some update on Yoshi would’ve been nice. Also, why not try their hand at some new IPs? It worked for Splatoon and even ARMS (to a lesser extent). My point is, there are plenty of things they could do, but they chose only to reveal one new first party game at the year’s most important game show. That’s quite disappointing.
Typo, says fornite
@Paraka
You have low expectations
@Anti-Matter
I agree, 5/10 is what I was thinking as well
Too much smash U
@NewAdvent
Agreed, this year has been slim pickings
Treehouse live day 2 starts NOW!! and not after an hour like the counter on the front page says.
waiting for the second konami game... it was 2 they said i think and we already got track n field
All the unmentioned titles aside (AC 5 ), the Smash presentation felt extremely rushed and unfinished. No proper trailer, a jumbled roster reveal, unimpressive soundtrack, no (STORY) modes. It was like they just threw everything together at the last minute. I understand the game is still in development and the graphics/interface will undoubtedly be polished, but when a company's entire year is basically riding on one game, it should receive a lot more fanfare than Smash got this E3.
Too much time devoted to Smash Bros, but it does look good, and I am pretty excited for it. I think they should have held off revealing Metroid Prime 4 until this E3 though because it'll probably be shown off by next E3.
@NightBeast There's seems to be a bout of selective amnesia going around the forums mate. Seems people totally forgot a bunch of games revealed in the Direct yesterday
@thesilverbrick - Listing off known IPs are not the same as having a major selling point for this year beyond Smash. They blew open the doors blazing with two of their major franchises and people suddenly saw what a miraculous thing that was and accepted as the beginning, and all there was is up. F-Zero being shown would please few, Waverace would please few Kid Icarus would also do the same. Only one listed would potentially blanket the Nintendo crowd with hype like Mario and Zelda is AC. Even then, that team just would have recently started work on it, so chances are it would been another 2019 game. So it would probably be seen just like FE was in this Direct; meaningless for this year.
But I will say I was surprised no story teaser or anything for MP4 was even shown, figured it'd set up for a follow through to Smash with the Ridley being on the front end.
@Mgene15 - It's also called being realistic, there was never an E3 where Mario and Zelda released in the same year so close after launch. And all the major players got to push out at least an announcement by the second. To expect Mario Odyssey levels of hype for all the following would be a dead experience. Could they have announced more 2019 to hype up the crowd? Sure, but then what would 2019 hold for us? Old hats and no surprises, even worse than this year.
Life and the gaming industry is not a linear progression path. It'll ebb, it'll flow, and this year it did one or the other. That's how development works, sadly.
As usual, thanks for the round-up! Though I'm interested in significantly less this year....My thoughts were given in yesterday's Talking Point.
@riChchestM
Proof?
@Mgene15 Email from Nintendo. I made a forum post with a link
I think people are being a little too hard on it. The only real gripe I have is too much focus on Smash and too little on other games. It was poorly balanced.
Sure, I wanted an Animal Crossing Switch announcement, or a revamp of the Switch OS with folders, themes and wireless headset support, sure I wanted GameCube and Wii game remasters. But those and other things were all just a wish list. There was no basis to expect them.
There will be more directs later this year. Nintendo has a history of doing that.
We want a Digital realease of the copy smash ultimate in the Nintendo Eshop and a demo Nintendo I want it sooo badly
Ahhhh the highs and lows of Nintendo message boards. Video game fans just can't be pleased. I understand that the Smash presentation was long but the first 20 minutes before that showed off a huge amount of games. Had Nintendo not revealed Smash at the last direct (with a tease) and had there not of been incessant leaks prior to E3, people would absolutely love this presentation. New Smash Bros! New Fire Emblem, new IPs (Daemon X Machina), great ports of games like Fortnite and Dragon Ball Z Fighters. I mean, if you actually objectively look at what was there, they showed a lot more than most press conferences, save Microsoft. Yet all I hear people say is "not enough". I don't understand that negativity personally and I can't help but wonder if there is truly "enough" to even satisfy the most outspoken of people on these forums. Is "enough" merely what you wanted to see? I dunno
With that little FMV at the end, where Ridley appears, seems to me (hopefully) there is a story mode to unlock the other characters. PLEASE!
