It's safe to say Metal Gear fans weren't best pleased when David Hayter, the long-serving voice of gruff spy clone Solid Snake was dropped in favour of Kiefer 'I'm always going to be Jack Bauer' Sutherland for 2015's Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
Well, grumble no more because Mr Hayter has returned to lend his signature windpipes to Solid Snake for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Nintendo Switch. With Snake returning alongside every other fighter that's ever smashed or brawled in the franchise thus far, senior product marketing manager for Nintendo America Bill Trinen and localisation manager Nate Bihldorff confirmed his involvement to Game Informer, but neither would elaborate on whether Hayter had recorded or re-recorded any new dialogue.
However, considering Snake was able to have discreet Codec chats with Otacon about every fighter on the Super Smash Bros. Brawl roster, it does stand to reason he'd be able to do the same for the substantially larger cast this time around. Hayter himself even confirmed his involvement on Twitter. Take from that what you will.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate arrives on Nintendo Switch on 7th December. Share your thoughts on Hayter's triumphant return and be sure to stay with Nintendo Life for all the latest E3 2018 updates...

I’m looking forward to more Codec transmissions about the new characters since Brawl. Those were great.
There’s only room for one Boss and one Snake
Isn’t that that Nintendo thing?
They got him back! Holy crap.
Snake amiibo when?
@rjejr you know it's bound to happen at some point!
I didn't squee when Snake appeared in the trailer...
I did now. No regrets.
@gortsi Well it has to or he would be the only character in the game without one. Probably release alongside Ice Climbers. It took 2 years for Cloud and Bayonetta, but probably early next year for those 2.
Would be pretty funny if the Snake amiibo was just a cardboard box w/ eyes. 😆
This roster is epic already, with everyone in it!
even ridley is in. Cant wait to see more revealed. This just crazy, i will buy another switch for my younger brother lol
After 4 years, I can definitely say, Snake, you kept me waiting, huh?
'Sorry to keep you waiting'

Not in my case. As much as I respect Hayter, Sutherland did a much better job, and I can see why Sutherland's voice is just behind Kurt Russel and above Hayter in terms of what Kojima wanted from the character. Nostalgia won't blind me and I won't say that he didn't do a great job as Venom Snake.
Hayter's voice is inconic, but also a bit too cartoonish and forced in my opinion.
Oh and a small correction: he did the voice of Venom Snake, not Solid Snake.
That moment when Sakurai cares more about Metal Gear's history than Kojima himself.
@thesilverbrick [deadpan] “Wario also attacks by farting. He can fart to fly around, too.”
YES!!! WELCOME BACK GOOD SIR!!
Personally, I'm more excited about getting the English voice cast for the Fire Emblem characters.
