Update: The demo has been confirmed for tomorrow:
Original Story: During the Pokkén Tournament World Championships it was announced that a demo of Pokkén Tournament DX will be coming to Nintendo Switch eShop. Like Splatoon 2 and fellow fighting title ARMS, Pokkén will get the chance to impress players (and tempt them into purchases) ahead of release, with Nintendo evidently keen to utilise demos on the Switch.
A tweet was uploaded by the official Pokémon Twitter account confirming this:
No date or time has been given for the demo's release, along with no information on what fighters will be available to test out. Presumably newcomers like Decidueye may be on that list to entice returning players back to the brawl. Pokkén Tournament DX is due for release for Nintendo Switch on 22nd September this year.
Will you be trying out the Pokkén demo? Let us know.

Finally I can try this game without shelling out for full price in case it's not my cup of tea c:
Wonder how the demo will work? I guess just one or two characters available from the roster to play matches against CPU or other local players?
I like that Nintendo's finally realized the importance of demos during the Switch era so far.
I doubt that the new characters would be in the demo because they are basically the main new things in the game. If any new characters are included in the demo I hope it’s Empoleon!
This is great and a perfect game for a demo to see if you like it or not. I'll be getting the demo because I've never play Pokken because I've questioned if it'd be good but now I'll know. Also I'm a sucker for buying games that have a demo because once I play it I want more....
Don't see a personal reason for downloading this but glad to see it coming for people who'd wanna try it without buying it blind.
@Grumblevolcano Nintendo themselves haven’t made a lot of demos, and this demo was most likely Game Freak's idea not Nintendo's
Fingers crossed there'll be a little multiplayer here, can't wait for this.
Awesome, hopefully it's multiplayer!
I would prefer a demo of Vroom in the Night Sky.
No reason not to try it out now. Still doubt I will be getting it though.
Never played so would like to see what the fuss is about
@DaLoneSheep if Nintendo owns the Pokemon IP, it is really their choice at the end. Either way, it's good news for both companies as it gives plenty of newcomers a chance to experience it. Slightly off topic, if ubisoft were to release a English monster hunter xx on switch, who would download it?
Lots of demos on Switch.
I'm gonna play this with an arcade stick, but I also just ordered the Pokken Tournament controller. I just really like playing these games how they were originally designed at the arcades
@zever
MHXX is Capcom...
Heck yeah! Now I can put this Pro Pad to the test.
The Pokken demo on Wii U only included Pikachu and Lucario, so I hope the Switch demo has more to try out.
Pokken Tournament had a Wii U demo, my son enjoyed it, it will possibly be the same content on the Switch demo.
@DaLoneSheep Game Freak didn't develop Pokken, they only do the main series games. Namco's in charge of Pokken.
Meh, another port of a game we all played on the WiiU. Good they have a demo for people sho never had a WiiU, but charging 59 for this (even on the eShop) is crazy.
@CapricornDavid I remember the Wii U having a demo of the original. I don't quite remember the limitations of the demo, but it'll probably be like it.
@Agramonte It's still got new characters. I never bought the Wii U version.
@SuperTeeter64 and a few new game modes. Better value for you if you never played it. You should still get a small discount in my mind, like SE did with Zodiac Age on the PS4 and N-B doing with XenoVerse2 on the Switch.
Again, liking the 2nd chance this game's getting after being released both on the Wii U and very late into the console's life.
You can always wait for the price to go down if you already owned the Wii U version.
I can compare the graphics and see if they fixed them up any with the switch version. neat.
The wii u demo made me decide not to get this game then so I will pass again.
I know i will end up buying smash 4 deluxe in Spring when I expect it to arrive. It must have been held back coz of pokken. Just hope it is a mix of 3ds and wii u content.
I'm on the fence with this game. I didn't care much for what I played on Wii U (less than an hour) and this version doesn't seem to add much. I'm just waiting for Smash Switch, I guess.
Already pre-ordered but the demo gives me the chance to make sure before I buy.
I enjoyed the first.
Five characters and a 3 on 3 mode does make double dipping more tempting, but I'll probably hold off until I know five friends that are interested.
This is one of four titles I have been super excited for coming to Nintendo Switch.
I was at Nintendo's Summer of Play tent in New York today, and the version they had running had ALL(?) of the Pokémon selectable. I don't really follow Pokkén, hence the question mark after 'ALL', but I did notice roughly 21 portraits on the select screen, 3 rows of about 7 per row. Unless it was 3 rows of 6 for a total of 18, then that's my bad. The demo, I think, lasted for one or two matches (I jumped in one in progress, so I didn't see it from the beginning. After which, a "Thank You For Playing" screen faded in and then went back to the title.
If this ends up being the actual eShop demo, then that would be insane! I probably won't play Pokkén, but I can appreciate a demo full of content.
Ah... too bad. I don't have Switch yet.
But, I will buy the game once it released.
Day One.
@Proust I had the game on WiiU and can tell you I enjoyed it. Hopefully people who play the demo like it and purchase a game they will have a good time with.
I love Pokken Tournament on the Wii U and still play it. I will definitely be downloading the Switch demo while I wait for my preorder to arrive.
It really is a fun game that has a lot of depth, if you put the time into it and not discredit it immediately. I probably spent at least 30 hours with this game (which is a big deal as my average is probably only 20 to 30 minutes per game).
@Proust its a must buy! Decidueye is here!!!
I know I'll be crucified, but I'll buy FIFA on september instead of Pokken...
@CapricornDavid I think its going to let you use all the character but with other conditions that i cant really think of. maybe it will be a trial and not a demo?
@DaLoneSheep @zever I doubt that either Nintendo or GameFreak had a say in this. The game is developed by Namco Bandai and The Pokemon Company (TPC) handles the IP. Granted, Nintendo and GameFreak both own a part of TPC, but I think this decision was probably Namco's decision with TPC's consent.
I'll pass, but only because I own said game for my WiiU and have played it to death. An essential addition to the Pokemon catalogue of games.
@MattFox I think people buying Fifa is important for future third party plans. Shame Pokken is releasing around the same time.
I remember the wiiU demo had enough meat in it to see if you would like this game or not, I'm sure there were four characters a two support sets in the demo so you and a friend could do a 2 Vs 2 battle. And I remember they had a couple of skins too. I enjoyed it but it did think it wasn't worth the full price but definitely worth the £30 mark if you can get it cheap.
@CapricornDavid wiiU was four characters (plus skins) and two support sets. I wouldn't be surprised if the demo features the same if not more than that.
@SnowFox The wiiU demo had Pikachu, Lucario, Gengar & Charizard. Plus two support Pokémon sets, Emolga & Fennekin and Cubone & Diglett.
I thought it was decent for a demo and gave you enough to try a couple of different combinations.
I had this on wii u... it good
But story mode was slog and nothing really interesting to unlock!
Do like look new characters but think give it miss this time.
@Shellcore shame it football game there releasing....never understand whats entertaining about kicking ball back and forth lol xD
@MattFox I'm not sure why you think you'll be crucified for saying that. I'll also be buying FIFA rather than this, as I'm not into fighting games like this. It's great that this is getting a demo for those undecided though.
@Tate24 I'm not interested in Football games either and is certainly a shame that the success of Fifa will probably dictate EA's Switch line up going forward.
@Shellcore Yes, it is. Let's hope enough of us buy it
@Hughesy Come on, Hughesy(killer name, btw), you know how some people, specially north americans feel about Football. I like fighting games as well, I just don't wanna spend 95 US Dollars on it( Thats the price with taxes in my delightful country ).
This is a game I'm considering getting, and a demo might help me make my decision.
This early on in the Switch's life cycle, demos are a great way to get publicity for publishers that want to get their games out there. After all, there are still relatively few AAA titles for Switch, so gamers might want to try demos to hold them over, and perhaps discover a game that turns out to be their new favorite. It seemed to work for Disgaea 5 and Blaster Master Zero!
@Agramonte The original wasn't even worth $60; $50 at most.
The original had graphics worse than Tekken Tag Tournament 2, which was a launch game from the same developer. Lazy as hell.
Assuming this demo is the same demo we had for the Wii u
@Raptor78 Oh must've forgot they were playable. It's been a long time since I played that demo. xD
Sweet I gave the wiiu game to my brother so this will tide me over.
@MattFox Haha cheers. Yea I forgot how some view football. This is going to rub them the wrong way even more, as I'm buying it for PC and Switch. PC for online against friends and my brother, Switch for on the go.

"If you're after another dose of combat, look out for a downloadable demo of Pokkén Tournament DX, coming to Nintendo eShop this Thursday."
@VIIIAxel ok it’s Namco but it still probably wasn’t Nintendo’s idea for a demo
And a Xenoverse 2 demo as well?
Let the battle of the late 90's morning cartoons begin (again)!
@dazzleshell
Smash would've been announced at E3 if it was coming in Spring. Even a port would be a huge game which they wouldn't announce in a Direct. Wait until E3 next year.
May give it a try
@DaLoneSheep Of the four big first party games Nintendo have released so far, two of them have had pretty big demo campaigns (Spla2oon and ARMS).
It's also worth noting that Zelda was a launch title with a 100%+ attach rate, so releasing a demo of that would have been preaching to the choir. There's no point providing a taster for a game when your audience bought the console specifically to enjoy the full course.
Discounting that, the only big first party Nintendo game that hasn't come with a demo is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. And moving away from big titles, we've also seen smaller titles like Snipperclips get demo versions.
I think it's fair to say that Nintendo is more readily embracing demos this generation than last.
At least they are releasing the demo before the game gets released this time.
Yay for demos!
Have the game on Wii U. Probably won't get this, as I don't see any justification for $60. However if you missed it on Wii U I would recommend it.
@Maxz the Testfire and Testpunch don’t really count as demos. Snipperclips wasn’t made by Nintendo.
@DaLoneSheep "The Testfire and Testpunch don’t really count as demos."
I'm struggling to think of what could qualify more as a demo than allowing anyone who owned the console to come together and play a trial version of the full game.
Are you referring to the fact that they were only playable in certain specified windows? They were time-limited demos. That's how they work.
A demo version of a game is one that serves as a demonstration of the full product. Demonstration versions are exactly what both Test Fire and Test Punch were.
Also, Snipperclips was published by Nintendo, and the decision to publish a demo version would ultimately be made by them. It's highly unlikely that this decision would have been in the hands of the two-man team who actually developed the game. So the point stands.
If you want to continue arguing that Nintendo aren't publishing more demos this generation than last, please bring some fresh evidence.
I've always been on the fence about this one. At least I know that there's a demo waiting for me when I get a Switch.
@Maxz I didn’t say that they weren’t making more demos than on the Wii U. I was saying that most demos weren’t actually made by Nintendo and the the Pokken demo probably wasn’t Nintendo’s idea.
Also the only reason they did the testfire was because it’s a Splatoon game, and the only reason they did the testpunch is because their using what I like to call the “Splatoon strategy”
I will admit that you do have a point with Snipperclips
Been there and done that was very disappointed with the wii u version. My money is going on xenoverse 2 instead. On the 22nd
I'd forgotten how pretty this game is. Here is hoping we get TTT2 as well.
The demo is now live. Restricted to only 15 in-game battles though
Available fighters include Pikachu, Charizard and Empoleon.
Well, I may try it out now. I'm no fan of fighting games, but it is Pokémon so I'll give it a spin.
Probably won't get it, though.
Otherwise not my genre of game, I'll DL this demo.
Gladly, Nintendo is realizing the importance of demos while everyone else seems to be forgetting it.
So I tried the demo...but still can't decide which to buy on the 22nd...this or DBZXenoverse2...I have played both. I enjoy both, but can't decide which would get more "life" in our house.
