We already know that The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D has been an early success since its launch last week, and we now have strong début sales in Japan to add to the picture; it gave the New Nintendo 3DS hardware a boost, too.

The Zelda remake was the comfortable winner in the Media Create software top 20 this week, though Bandai Namco contributed another 3DS newcomer with The Seven Deadly Sins: Unjust Sin arriving in third spot. Three iterations of Samurai Warriors 4-II can be found near the top on Sony systems, though some evergreen 3DS releases are still weighing in; the top 20, with lifetime sales in brackets, is below.

  1. [3DS] The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D – 230,065 (New)
  2. [PS3] Samurai Warriors 4-II – 44,574 (New)

  16. [Wii U] Kirby and the Rainbow Curse – 6,258 (58,267)
  17. [PSV] Hyakka Yakou – 6,235 (New)
  18. [Wii U] Super Smash Bros. for Wii U – 6,118 (587,913)
  19. [PS3] Far Cry 4 – 5,280 (32,159)
  20. [3DS] Yokai Watch 2: Ganso / Honke – 5,226 (3,103,815)

In terms of hardware sales, numbers crept up for all systems except the Xbox One. The Wii U's increase was minimal and the system is still struggling, but the big winner was the New Nintendo 3DS LL (XL), which maintained its position on top and enjoyed a significant bump; no doubt the limited edition Majora's Mask 3D bundle contributed to this. Results are below with last week's sales in brackets.

  1. New 3DS LL – 41,821 (21,650)
  2. PlayStation 4 – 21,381 (18,758)
  3. PlayStation Vita – 10,901 (10,013)
  4. New 3DS – 9,584 (7,916)
  5. Wii U – 7,007 (6,517)
  6. PlayStation 3 – 6,683 (6,426)

  8. 3DS – 3,214 (2,642)
  9. PlayStation Vita TV – 588 (560)

A successful week for Nintendo and its latest blockbuster release on 3DS, and it'll be interesting to see how the momentum for Majora's Mask and the New Nintendo 3DS hold up in the next few weeks.
