Has there been a console that you weren't initially interested in but seeing a game on it changed your mind and made you buy the console? For me there have been 3 instances:
Super Mario World - SNES
Virtua Fighter - Sega Saturn (caused a defection to Sega)
Banjo Kazooie - N64 (blew me away graphically & brought me back to the Nintendo fold)
NES-I was really young back then, but Super Mario Bros.
SNES-Killer Instinct(This is when I started to realize I loved fighting games)
N64-Ocarina of Time, though I ended up liking Majora's Mask much better, though I didn't get to play it until it came out on the Wii VC, since I didn't have the expansion pak required for my N64.
Gamecube-Super Smash Bros. Melee, so many hours playing this, freaking glorious, never gets old.
Ace Attorney v Professor Layton and Kingdom Hearts 3D sold me on 3DS before the thing was ever released..... it's incredible I'm still waiting to play the first about 4 years later.
There is always a game with every console that makes it a must buy for me. The ones that spring to mind are:
PC - Counter Strike and Civ (many PCs bought for various versions of these games)
SNES - Street Fighter 2
Saturn - Sega Rally
PS1 - Wip3out 2097
N64 - every single game
Dreamcast - Virtua Tennis / Soul Calibur
I only posted this to get my avatar as the forum's thumbnail.
PLOK was my main reason to get a SNES again, and I still love that game!
Super Mario Sunshine made me get a GameCube (best GC game for my taste).
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin convinced me into getting a DS (funny, because I got Dawn of Sorrow for christmas instead, which I now prefer).
Metroid Prime: Corruption was a must-have for me, so a Wii was inevitable.
PuyoPop Fever was (besides Disgaea) my only reason to want a PSP - now it only serves as my music player on the go.
Guilty Gear II: Overture was pure, blind fangasm. I still have the game, but not a 360 anymore. The only console I regret.
Senran Kagura had me hyped far enough to get a 3DS BEFORE the price drop - but it took another 3 years until I finally got the game!
And WiiU became mandatory with the announcement of Xenoblade X - which I'll wait for patiently!
In general I'd say our tastes are a little different, but I'm not kidding when I say that not more than a month after that first Xenoblade X trailer I went out and bought a Wii U, haha!
For some others though:
PS2: FFX
GCN: Wind Waker (Fire Emblem would have if I'd known what it was before Gamecube)
Wii: Smash Bros. and Mario Kart
Xbox 360: Mass Effect and Lost Odyssey
3DS: Fire Emblem Awakening
Wii U: Xenoblade Chronicles X (as mentioned above I'm not afraid to mentioned it twice...or more)
I was sold on 360 when I saw it had JRPGs and Rare was making a new Banjo game and this cool Viva Pinata thing.
HAHAHAHA HINDSIGHT
I'll be honest, Wii U was the first Nintendo system I needed to be sold on (especially since Nintendo had to give me free games to make up for my terrible choice to get a 3DS so soon ) but Bayonetta 2 and Lego City convinced me they knew what they're doing. It depends on my mood if that's better or worse than the 360 example I just made.
I wasn't entirely sold on Wii but so much of it seemed super interesting to me that I had to get it and I loved Nintendo's attitude with it. Especially since every GCN game in development was being put on it.
No one game would sell me on a console. That's why I'm worried Beyond Good and Evil 2, when it finally exists, is gonna hurt.
Genesis - Sonic 2/Rocket Knight Adventures (the second time)
Game Boy Color - Pokemon Yellow
N64 - Super Mario 64 (or maybe Super Smash Bros.?)
Playstation - Digimon World (I was 10...)
NGPC - SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millenium
Dreamcast - Shmups and Arcade games that I never play
Gamecube - Super Smash Bros. Melee
Game Boy Advance - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Nintendo DS - Super Mario 64 DS (I regretted that decision immediately)
Playstation 2 - Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
PSP - Wipeout Pure/Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters (Best combo ever)
Wii - Metroid Prime 3
Xbox 360 - Gears of War 2 (...I was 15...)
PS3 - 3D Dot Game Heroes/Ni no Kuni/Demon's Souls/R&CF: Tools of Destruction/A Bunch of Mediocre-to-Crappy RPGs (...shut up...)
3DS - Mega Man Legends 3 (...if it weren't for the Ambassador Program...)
PSVita - Gravity Rush (NO REGRETS)
Wii U - Wonderful 101
Yeah, I buy almost every console for one or two games. It's a system that never really backfired on me yet.
