There's never been a single game that sold me on a console. However, Thief: The Dark Project did single-handedly convert me into a PC gamer.

U-Wishlist: Splatoon, Zelda U

The only system that comes to mind is the DS.

I wasn't going to get one at first since I am not a big handheld gamer but I finished and fell in love with Aria of Sorrow on the GBA (bought the two pack Castlevania game for the GBA used on a whim). When I heard the the DS had a sequel to it called Dawn of Sorrow I went out and bought a DS along with a copy of Dawn of Sorrows.

The only clear seller for me was Pokemon Red/Blue. Convinced me to buy a Gameboy Pocket. Every other time, it's been a combination of things. PS3 and Wii U have been the only consoles I've ever purchased at launch, for better or worse, and neither was because of any specific game. Hell, it took the entire library of PS1 Classics and PSP games to finally convince me to get a Vita.

Eh, got NES and Genesis when I was too young to really have any input abut which consoles I played on. Following this, however:

Game Boy: Pokemon Red
PS1: Spyro the Dragon
N64: Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Snap
Game Boy Color: Pokemon Silver
Dreamcast: Resident Evil: Code Veronica
PS2: Final Fantasy X and Metal Gear Solid 2
Gamecube: REmake, Resident Evil Zero, and Metroid Prime.
New Computer (about 2005): Doom 3
Xbox 360: Grand Theft Auto IV
Nintendo DS: Contra 4 (still one of my favorite games ever)
GBA: Got it to play the GBA games I owned after my DS Lite broke down in 2011.
New Computer (about 2011): The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Nintendo 3DS: Bought it solely for Super Mario 3D Land, but I got it around September of 2011 when the Fire Red model and Star Fox 64 3D came out. I only had to wait a few months for that Mario game, and I discovered the joys of Star Fox.
Playstation Vita: Persona 4 Golden and Gravity Rush.
Wii U: I got it for all of the amazing looking Nintendo exclusives that have been releasing on it, but two games seriously swayed me: Super Mario 3D World made me seriously consider getting a Wii U for a long while, but it wasn't until I saw extensive footage of Mario Kart 8 in a Nintendo Direct prior to release that I really told myself: "I need this system."

I never personally owned a Wii, as it more belonged to the rest of my family, but I will say that while I never really cared for the system, it was worth having solely to be able to play Super Mario Galaxy.

Also, I fully plan on buying a PS3 for Persona 5 after that releases.

Here are the games that sold me on each of the systems I've owned, in chronological order.

NES - Super Mario Bros 3
N64 - Super Mario 64
SNES - Super Mario Word
Saturn - Panzer Dragoon
Dreamcast - Marvel Vs Capcom 2
Gamecube - Resident Evil 4
PS2 - Final Fantasy X
Wii - Zelda Twilight Princess (a free game at launch offer motivated me to get a wii at launch - the first and so far only time I've done that)
WiiU - Super Mario 3D World

The hardest to pinpoint to a specific game was gamecube as I was sold on it on blind faith, and thus chose the game that would have done the most to motivate me to invest in it if I were as critical then as I am now. To illustrate the difference, with the current gen I waited to see what all three were offering first and then did a lot of research and thinking into which if any was worth my hard earned cash. Where as in times of old I associated certain brands with particular qualities not realising that past glories don't always translate into great deeds in the future.

On the PS2 it was simple - Kingdom Hearts. The same was true for the PSP and Birth by Sleep.

I wasn't actually too interested in the DS when it was announced but figured I would eventually get one anyway. However, my stance changed when I played a demo of Wario Ware Touched. I was completely sold and ordered one later that night - just a few days after it launched.

I had wanted a PS3 for years but the game that finally made me actually buy one was Ni No Kuni.

As for other systems it was a combination of factors and no single game.

I normally get Nintendo consoles when I'm ready, but when I'm all grown up and have my own money I will get future(with present) Sony and Microsoft consoles with LittleBigPlanet; Jax and Daxter; Sly Cooper; Uncharted with any other title that interests me like Gravity Rush for Sony. For Microsoft I guess it's only Halo and Forza. For Nintendo it's when I'm ready, irrespective of any game.

God first.

PS2=Onimusha
PS3= Yakuza and Way of the Samurai 3
Xbox360= TES Oblivion....which then made me a PC gamer (Used my pc for gaming before but not as an exclusive box till then.)
PC= The sims 2, Age of Mythology, and Oblivion.

Since I love a vast majority of Nintendo's franchises it is more pricing than anything else. I couldn't afford a 3ds when it first came out. Got one the day of the price drop.

Nintendo DS - Super Mario 64 DS (I regretted that decision immediately)

My decision to initially buy a DS over a PSP was because after a year of watching both, DS had GAMES!
(I recall that the first year or so of the PSP was so bad, mostly known for those UMD movies nobody wanted, that even Miyamoto pitied it.)
Though Square-Enix caused me to get a PSP as well later on. First game I bought was Star Ocean: First Departure, before I even had the system. I think Dracula X Chronicles might've been a decider as well.
I don't have a Vita but Ys IV is tempting. I recall Vita also had a bad start, so much I even honestly forgot it was released a few times.

But anyways...
PS2 - it had the most RPGs
Wii - Wii Sports (weren't we all amazed by it at first sight), and now I could play GC games, which had the most Nintendo games of its generation
GC - but the Wii couldn't become a TV GBA.
3DS - again got swayed by the hype. Sadly after putting in Steel Diver and experiencing the 3D hype for an hour I had nothing else to play and I was afraid it would become a backup DS. Fortunately it eventually started to get a respectable library of games.
PS3 - another victim of the RPG bait and the fact I otherwise lack a Blu-ray player. First game I got besides the pack-ins probably wasn't the best choice. Kingdom Hearts HD. Sorry but also with KH2HD and even S-E comparison video, I'm not really seeing a huge improvement. The fact its Final Mix and thus slightly different from the version I already played is the day. Probably why I'll maybe pick up KH2 only after it drops in price.

Ran out and purchased a PS3 after "The Last Guardian" was announced....well that did not pan out as I had planned. Needless to say I no longer have a PS3.
