They want to make 2D side-on platformers, thats fine. But how about a Zelda platformer? Let's call it Zelda III.
Yes, it would be based on Zelda II and you would explore dungeons and other familar Zelda locations in a 2D platformer. Link would keep his Upthrust and Downthrust and be able to gain some new magic spells along the way. He would jump using the Roc's Feather then later gains the Roc's Cape. You can gain experience points too as before. These could be Rupees to buy strength, health and magic with.
There would not be a overhead world map. The stages would be laid out like the Mario games. So yes, it would play like the Mario games but with Link in Hyrule instead. Which right now is preferable to a fifth New Super Mario Bros. game. You can also play four players, with each
Sure Zelda games are typically adventures but they are taking years to create so how about spin-off Zelda games that are relatively quick for Nintendo to make to keep us satisfied while we wait for the main game.
Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.
I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!
It kinda sounds like u want a 2d zelda game that is a mash-up of zelda 2 and skyward sword Just btw, Zelda 3 is considered to be A Link to the Past. Truly, this doesn't sound too bad, but I'm a bigger fan of the 3D zelda games, and if I had to go 2D again, I like the top down look better.
I agree though, it would be cool to have a classic zelda type series along with the main zelda series, just like with NSMB and main Mario series, but I think Nintendo has enough going for them without adding a huge secondary zelda franchise to worry about lol. They kinda did make a off-branch of zelda though with a more toonish link, so it's hard to say what Nintendo will do next
Nah, that doesn't sound like a good idea IMO. I'd rather just have a new top down Zelda game if anything.
But when it comes to platformers, I think Nintendo should do something different with the Super Mario Bros franchise. We've had NEW, what about OLD? Old /(or)/ Retro Super Mario Bros.? I think that could be amazing.
They could reuse the old art for Mario that was in the Super Mario World etc. games and make a whole game with that art (kind of like how Rayman Orgins represents the art in 2D). I'd buy a game like that in an instant.

I prefer my Zelda's 3D and my Mario 2D... the only exception to this rule are the GBC Zelda games, those are awesome! But if I ever see a 2D Zelda game that's a side-scroller, that is the day I kill myself.
@MrArcade I hated those parts... why would you cross Mario enemies with a Zelda game... just, just why? Why would you do that?
I would like to see a Mario and Sonic crossover platformer...

how do you post a youtube video on to the page?
Zelda isn't meant to be a game that is played in bite-sized chunks (like a 2D platformer) - that's what Mario is for.
Indeed, Zelda was created as an antithesis to Mario's 2D shenanigans.
Yes, there are indeed many Mario games that deviate from the 'instant fun' mentality of its origins (Mario RPG games come to mind). However, Mario was designed as a versatile character that can appear in a multitude of genres - Link wasn't.
Link was designed as an extension of the player; someone that they can vicariously live through as they undertake an epic adventure - and be an immersive experience (that's why Miyamoto wnated OoT to be an FPS). The philosphy behind Zelda is that the player is literally supposed to BE Link (hence Skyward Sword's innovative swordplay). In a way, Zelda is the purest RPG there is - because you are very much playing a role. That kind of immersion can't be replicated in a 2D game.
That idea would suck. I think they should make a new zelda that is like links awakening. I love 3d Zelda, but I miss LttP and Links awakening style zelda games

its not about a new rpg though, its about a new platformer. and i'd prefer a Zelda platformer than a Mario platformer at this point.

That is actually really fun... but does feel too much like a Smash Bros. type of thing. :3
So there we have it... if you want a 2D Zelda, just choose Link on Super Smash Bros. Brawl and go through the Subspace Emissary... Instant 2D Zelda entertainment. Enjoy!
@FonistofCruxis How is Zelda not an RPG? After all it stands for Role Playing Game and in Zelda your taking the role of Link. You can't defy logic... unless of course you're a sponge named bob who lives under the sea, in which case...
I wouldn't mind that at all,i am one of the few who actually likes Zelda 2(i mean sure the last areas were tough, but patience is key).
Just no more annoying partners,i didn't mind Navy and Tatl,Midna was entertaining, but Fi is just ugh...
Actually, I do enjoy the 2D side scrolling combat in Zelda 2, I'd even say that it it one of the best Zelda games in terms of action. One thing that did turn alot of people off though was the difficulty. I really don't mind it to be the only official 2D Zelda that isn't Top down as it offers a new breath of air and what could have been another staple to the Zelda series. I can see potential for this battle mechanic if they could make some adjustments to make it more appealing to the general audience like say tone down the difficulty level, Having Link's attacks move more fluidly, etc.
There is another game that emulates the zelda 2 formula, but coated with the Adventure Time license. I do have hopes for this game, but as it is an game based on a show, I do have my doubts:
I wouldn't mind a Side Scrolling Zelda, but I would not want levelling up. Upgrades to items and abilities? Yes. RPG style experience point gain? Hell no.
That was what made Zelda II so hard. You had to level up your sword, health, and magic meter to be able to take on tougher enemies instead of using your head to strategically kill them by using the proper item setup or tackling them from another direction.
Take Zelda 1 for example. In order to kill the Darknuts, you had to hit them from the side (correct me if I'm wrong). Granted, they took a million hits with the wooden or white sword, you could move AROUND them to attack. In Zelda II, when confronted with an enemy, you can only go at them from one direction (until you get the downthrust...) which makes dealing with some enemies really hard. Another example of this is the guys in Level 1 of Zelda 1. They had boomerangs. However, you could just move out of their line of sight to avoid getting hurt. In Zelda II, you have to jump or duck accordingly to dodge the boomerangs and even then, there were times when multiple boomerangs would come your way and ducking would only get you hit by one that was higher up so that you couldn't deflect with your shield and jumping only meant you had to land on one coming at your feet.
TL;DR: I don't want a Zelda game where I have to gain EXP because then it makes the game's enemies fake hard. Fake hard being, instead of you coming at them from the wrong angle, you just need to get a score up to point X so you do more damage when you hit them. Good for Pokemon, not Zelda.
