The Disgaea series has plenty of loyal fans, and across 6 (7 with Disgaea D2) mainline games it has continued to win over players with its bright visuals, goofy and often funny storytelling, and of course a whole lot of gameplay depth.
The good news is that the series has now amassed a combined 5 million units shipped (physical retail) and sold (digital downloads). It's a notable landmark, which publisher Nippon Ichi Software is celebrating with 50% discounts of various series entries on the Switch eShop - among other platforms - in Japan. Considering the fact that it's not so long ago that the publisher was in some financial trouble, it's a pleasing landmark.
NIS America and its EU equivalent haven't setup equivalent discounts as yet, but we'll keep our eyes peeled in case they come along later.
The most recent entry in the series, of course, was Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny; we gave it a hearty recommendation in our review.

I'm very happy for Nippon Ichi Software. I got into this series after getting my Switch and it's definitely one of my favorite tactical RPG series now. I think my favorite game would have to be 4, because Valvatorez is my favorite protagonist, and I really like the dynamics between the whole cast of that game, but I enjoyed 1 and 5 a lot too. I've been playing 6 since I got it last week, and it's been quite fun as well. I know people complained a lot about performance, but on balance mode it's basically been fine for me. Hopefully this series still has a long future ahead of it! Its wacky humor is something I really value in a genre that sometimes takes itself too seriously.
Now we just need ports of 2 & 3 on Switch and the series will be complete.
@Magician Don't forget D2! I need more Laharl, Etna, and Flonne in my life lol.
Don't believe the marketing nonsense. NIS has been on life support after the failure that was Disgaea mobile.
Don't expect anything from NISA, they recently RAISED the prices of several older games on Steam.
@realityxaidan - I remember 4 being my first into the series. And like Rorona being my intro to the Atelier series, I have a fondness for Val as well.
Though, pretty sure if Nintendo did anything together with the Disgaea franchise, it'd likely be Prinny centric. Be it Smash or otherwise. They're all OVER.
I’ve been playing the first one on my Vita and it’s pretty good if a little overwhelming!
That's kind of a big deal, dood!
Really enjoying 6. One of my favorite RPGs.
Still hoping for Disgaea 2 & 3 Complete and Final Fantasy Tactics for Switch. These tactics games are what eats up my hours the most during the Super NES, PS1, PS2, N64, GBA, PSP, DS, and Wii days and I can't wait for Project Triangle Strategy to continue that trend for the OLED.
I'm so happy to see this. I actually love the series, and haven't had any negative feelings about 6. I'm glad the earlier sentiment I saw isn't the majority.
@BloodyMurder their stock value is one of the most stable in Tokyo's market just fyi. You can search it if you want to verify.

@ThePoetZiggy
That's irrelevant. They are still recovering from bankruptcy.

Stock price is irrelevant when you can't pay your staff. Something that bad will take more than a year to recover from.
Tbh I thought this series was more popular
Also have they fixed the performance problems
@BloodyMurder they are selling the stocks to keep the company going according to the article you posted. So it's actually super relevant. That stock is also trading green many days in Tokyo, even when they are selling shares at a discount to fund the company. That would send most shares super red. They are fighting to stay afloat and shares are often above 1150$ I agree it will impact releases and activity, but if the company is willing to dump shares before employees, that's a very good sign they are fighting for them.
@thomasBW84 the article says 6 mainline games but there are actually 7. D2 is a mainline game, a bit similar to FF13-2 and the 2 persona 2 games, but it is a mainline game nonetheless.
Wow, that's so... small, considering how long this series has been going. Disgaea 2 was literally the first game I ever bought with my own money as a teen.
It makes sense, then, why NIS went all in on Switch after Disgaea 5 Complete sold 200,000+ copies within its first year on the system.
And considering those numbers, and how Disgaea has generally thrived on Switch compared to Playstation, it makes you wonder how low the Western sales for these games were on PS4.
NISA chose not to localize the PS4 version of Disgaea 6, which means they thought they could get more sales by marketing it as an exclusive in the West than bringing the game over to the largest console platform in the world atm.
@BloodyMurder I don’t know anything about the bankruptcy, but five million across 6+ platforms and 5+ titles doesn’t sound like the feather in their cap that they want it to be. Especially when this is one of their premier franchises.
@darkswabber where does Operation Prinny fall? Are those their own separate sales and franchise?
I'm hoping NIS pulls through, financially or at least is bought by a company that respects their properties like when Atlus was bought by Sega while still remaining creatively independent.
@NIN10DOXD they should pull through. They have a very valuable stock and are selling it to stay afloat. Companies getting ready to be bought out do lay offs before selling stock shares, typically.
@NIN10DOXD NIS going down would really suck. They've put 110% of their effort into supporting the Switch and, frankly, all of the Falcom games landing on the system now is almost entirely thanks to their intervention.
Which Disgaea game should a newcomer play first, and why?
@Synecdoche 6 is your best bet. It requires the least amount of grinding and was designed for new players to get into.
@JR150 Thanks!
@darkswabber Fair enough, my bad

@ThomasBW84 No problem. The term “Main series” can get weird and iffy when direct sequels happen in a series where numbered sequels are their own thing.
I'm glad they are doing well, I did read a couple of years ago that it could be all over for them.
I think I'll buy Disgaea 6 just to make it 5,000,000 and one. 😃
@Magician but I'm greedy and I want all their other stuff on switch too! Phantom Brave, Makai Kingdom, La Pucelle, the works!!
@StrangerSun Phantom Brave is coming to Switch in August. As for other NIS games, I'd like to see the Cladun series and/or The Witch and the Hundred Knight series make their way over.
