It's been quite a while since Digital Foundry investigated a Nintendo Switch release, but now John Linneman is back to see how The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD holds up.
He describes it as "more than just a remaster" of the original 2011 Wii release thanks to not only the improved graphics but also the quality of life improvements. The game makes the jump from a 480p output on Wii to 1080p docked and 720p in handheld on the Switch. The framerate is 60fps in most cases, excluding some more heated moments.
In addition to this, there have been improvements to texture qualities, the Wii's "colour dithering" has been completely eliminated - enhancing the overall image quality, and the loading is also highlighted as being drastically faster. We were equally as impressed. Nintendo also managed to maintain the original look of assets while at the same time providing a higher resolution look.
Have you tried out Skyward Sword HD on the Nintendo Switch? What are your thoughts so far? Leave a comment down below.

Almost picked this up yesterday , haven’t played it since the original Wii version. Good to hear the games aesthetics and QOL improvements aren’t just half baked gloss overs
1/10 Game
No final smoochie
I liked Skyward Sword. Might be one of my fave Zelda games lol. I had no real issue with the motion. I think the only motion that gave me a problem was a stab motion I needed to preform during one particular boss fight. Everything else, no issue. It's such a cool game too when you think of how unique the experience is. There will be more open world games that all share a lot but there will never be another game like Skyward Sword. The combat was cool and the dungeons were good. I'm gonna see if I can get my brother to buy it for me for my upcoming birthday. Maybe.
Just finished the first temple and looks and runs great so far
Now you can really appreciate the vomit grass textures
Gah. Wasn’t going to bother but increasingly tempted. It’s more of an upgrade than I was expecting for some reason.
@Kirby_Girl lol I hope you get what you want for your upcoming birthday, have a good one
To be honest, my first thought playing it was that promotional materials and advertising didn't do the remaster justice.
The faces on the characters look so strange. I wonder what their reasoning was for basically making everyone look like they are wearing makeup? Is it lore or what?
I personally think this Zelda has the WORST art style. All the characters are ugly and uncanny. I like twilight princesses art style way more because the designs are very refined and the line work is much clearer, and that was on the GameCube.
@SalvorHardin looks retro 🤣
@CheekyZelda I always feel this way after starting a play through of the game. Especially after playing Windwaker or one of the other toonish art styles. I've gotten more out of it by looking at fanart and seeing these characters in Skyward sword in slightly different off-model scenarios. Groose being the number one benefactor of getting away from his in-game portrayal.
Looks and plays fantastic. Button control works great. Release this for the Wii U
Should be 60fps non stop for a wii game being on a "9th gen" console
@CheekyZelda
People generally say toony art styles age well... In my opinion, not all of them.
In fact, this didn't age as well as Wind Waker, which released nearly 9 years before this game. And even though Twilight Princess had a semi-realistic art style, and is older than this game, I believe Twilight Princess does in fact look better than Skyward Sword.
Best story in a Zelda game. Worst Zelda game to play and look at in my opinion. Just not for me.
I really like this game and I never played it when it was originally released. Story so far is great and I like the combat after some adjusting and the art direction is cool.
Not Majora’s Mask or Wind Waker HD 🥱
Skyward sword thought for the day. Skyrim came out at the same time and with its openness made linear Zelda look old fashioned. I am not a fan of Skyrim I am a skyward sword fan! There u go xxx
@Nontendo_4DS Went through the same dilemma… same result too lol
Can't wait to play it.
I'm playing for the first time and loving it.
Not a fan of motion controls and the button set up looks really off putting.
Pass.
Mine arrived today with Steelbook, keyring and poster (at my girlfriend's). Gotta wait till Wednesday to get my mitts on it!
This big question with this game is; if you have played the original is this version worth the full asking price. Have Nintendo done enough to justify the price?
Does anyone know the cost of developing new game compared to a make over?
The textures and character designs are pretty terrible. Haven't played it yet, but when I do, I think I'll stick with the digital Wii version I got for $10.
Im going to resist this buy... Already being duped into buying Mario 3D allstars at full price.
@Zequio I'll take the bait. Duped how?
I'm super impressed with the upgrade Nintendo made, looks like a worthy "HD" remaster! Tempted to make a purchase!
It's too bad Skyward Sword gets so much hate. It really is something special. This was the one Zelda game that really needed an HD makeover. I still have Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on Wii U and I'll egarly buy them again when they're released for Switch, but I'm glad Skyward Sword released first.
@Ralizah Terrible character design?
@nessisonett I like all these *****
I've played for about an hour and a half so far (my first time playing Skyward Sword). Silky smooth performance all around. The graphics are very much Wii-like though, so don't expect to be blown away by the visuals.
I've only just completed the sword-fighting tutorial and the motion controls are great. I have no intention of playing this with button controls.
@zool : That depends on whether or not you enjoyed the original experience and want to play it again. The QoL improvements, button controls, and portability will also add to the number of reasons why those who have previously played the game may want to consider double-dipping.
For example, I loved Miitopia on 3DS and I've loved it all over again on Switch (clocking in over 110 hours so far in the Switch version alone), however, if someone were to ask me whether the new content alone is worth double-dipping on, that would be a resounding no. I imagine that this too will have very little for those hungry for new content.
As for those who outright hated the game, I doubt that this will change their perception.
23 hours in.. already beat it in 2011 on the Wii.. starting to remember what’s gonna happen but I’m learning how to farm Rupees and might 100% it this time around.. smooth as f*** performance tho.. I can’t put it down.. they seriously could have put at least 20hrs into to textures yes, but, still loving it.. it’s a lot of fun as a replay.. definitely worth it as a new Zelda game.. remember as they say: Even a Bad Zelda Game is still a really good game
I got it in the mail this morning and enjoyed a few minutes of it before I had to go to sleep (working nights). It looks and plays lovely.
Its a cake with a few flies on it, but I’m eating it anyway!
As much as I think price is a rip-off. I bought it, just finished the first dungeon and I must confess I'm really enjoying it. The art style is very unique, and a very clever way to hide the Wii's limitation. It looks more better when playing in the context on the game than in preview clips. Playing with my Switch Pro controller and haven't had much of an issue with the controls so far, except for occasional brain fart when I completely lose myself and press the wrong bumper for camera - but mostly ok, and having fun with moving the sticks to control the sword.
I played this for a few minutes over the weekend and it looks sooo good. Anyone else notice the glitch with Fi's dialogue font though? I wonder if they'll patch it.
I was undecided, but now my mind is made up. I will purchase.
@UltimateOtaku91 Sounds like it runs at 60fps 99.9% of the time. Pretty good!
This release is exciting because it means they could release many Wii games running at 1080 or 720 at 60fps on Switch. They could probably do the same with Gamecube games. I would love to have Wave Race Blue Storm, 1080 Avalanche, and F-Zero GX on Switch at 1080p 60fps! There's about 300 other games that deserve the same treatment!
I hope Tantalus considers 60fps for Twilight Princess HD if they decide to port it to Switch. Same goes for WindWaker if Nintendo decides to delegate them for such a task.
One game i had 0 interest in 2 weeks ago.
One game i have 96% interes in now. The other 4% is saying "come one, youve been here plenty of times before. You know what to expect with one of your impulse buys"
[update] I gave in and got it. The 4% won🤷♂️
@Flashlink99 It would be pretty awesome to be able to play Wind Waker and Twilight Princess at 60fps in handheld mode!
This video is a fun one. A detailed and loving tribute to this great new (well, old also) release, love it!
Best item shop salesperson ever!
First time playing this one. My girlfriend pre ordered it and we sat down to play it yesterday, and we love it so far! Beer+wine+motion control was hilarious and dangerous fun on a Saturday night.
Even though this Zelda isn't the greatest Zelda in my top ten Zelda list it's nice that they finally give it the HD treatment like Link's Awakening, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess. Now all that's left to be HD remastered are Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Minish Cap, Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Track, Oracle of Ages and Seasons, The Last Story, A Link to the Past, and A Link Between Worlds.
I am enjoying the overall experience. I do believe you are just paying the entire game on 1.25x speed instead and that’s most of the qol improvements. I beat this so many times because I love the motion controls, it’s nice to play in handheld for a change.
@The_New_Butler I remember playing the original, and they had a watercolour filter over stuff in the distance. So maybe they've got rid of that, or it doesn't work quite as well in HD.
The highlights for me were the dungeons and the storytelling. That and I liked the motion controlled sword mechanics.
@SwankyKong64 Nintendo is still trying to figure out how they can charge 60$ for Zelda MM N64 upscaled to 900p.
@BloodNinja They specifically wanted the residents of Skyloft to resemble birds, which absolutely explains why some of them have cheek blush, weird-looking mouths and hairstyles, etc.
@Chlocean Oh. Well, it worked! They certainly look weird LOL Thank you for explaining.
@BloodNinja No problem! You will never be able to see Groose's hair without thinking about its aerodynamics now. 😁
@Chlocean Haha, lovely
@BloodNinja I think Zelda looks fine and most of the other characters are so cartoonish and distorted that it works as well. But Link does look very strange and a bit off putting.
@Kirby_Girl Happy birthday
@Tempestryke thanks! Not yet but soon. Appreciate it!
