I would personally place Sony and Nintendo at about the same level in this regard, but clearly Microsoft's first-party development is inferior. Halo, Gears and Fable. That's basically all Microsoft offers and frankly, I know those games have their fans, but Halo has gotten stale, and Fable is continually disappointing. Gears, in my opinion, is still good. That's it.
Edit: Oops, I forgot about Forza. Well, for racing sim fans that's definitely a winner. That's not me, though, unfortunately.
What is going through Nintendo's heads when they think that people want this game? Anything? Anything at all? Who makes these decisions, and to what address should I send him anthrax?
In my opinion, the Wii U is the culmination of a lot of ideas that have built up over the past decade and change, including concepts such as the Dreamcast VMU, Nintendo's own DS platforms and the original Wii.
While the Wii was an interesting (and wildly successful) experiment in new types of gaming, I think it was always a bit too limited to have widespread and long-term appeal for core gamers. And I honestly believe the Wii U will be the system to achieve that, cynics be damned.
In fact, I think the best thing about the Wii U is that it isn't taking too many risks. The underlying gameplay improvements it offers are not enigmatic, simply because they've been done before. And I think that the types of console experiences that it will offer will be staggering in creativity, scope and fun.
Dude, if this is anything like Elite Beat Agents, which is exactly what I'm envisioning — but instead of your success helping the "Cheerleaders" you help FF characters win battles — this pretty much sounds effing amazing. So much want!
@GreatManaTree: I dunno bro, playing Nintendo games on a PlayStation would be pretty sweet. But I get the feeling Nintendo's more likely to go down with their ship, should it come to that (doubtful, really, since they're still very profitable), rather than bail out and hop aboard the Sony boat.
The core will be sold with the games; the casual will be sold with the gimmick. The problem I foresee this time is that the gimmick isn't quite novel enough in the current marketplace. Most of the casual Wii market will see this as nothing but another Tablet or too similar to their DS. I don't believe that is the case, as I've seen what the Wii U can do in greater detail, but convincing those outside the core of that will be a challenge.
I would tend to agree that they should. It could be quite lucrative. But having said that, I doubt they will since it would eat directly into the 3DS, which is something that Nintendo wants you to take everywhere. Now if only they'd actually develop original first-party content for the eShop and DSiWare...
Alright guys, let me offer you this: you just amassed 600 coins to get this platinum reward. You know what from the catalogue you can afford now, with those 600 coins? It costs 550.
Yeah-- it's the MESSENGER BAG. What you can stick on a messenger bag? BUTTON PINS. Did I just blow your mind? Because just think about sticking 25 pins on that messenger bag and it instantly becomes amazing.
Haha, I've been sitting on so many surveys and codes over the last 8 months or so that I've already hit Platinum status for the 2011-2012 year. Woohoo \o/
Also, I was a little bummed about the pin set, since I was expecting some Zelda thing, but they're actually not too bad, upon closer inspection. It's the same thing Japan got last year, pretty much. Maybe they'll get a Zelda reward this year, and if we're lucky NoA will give us that next year in the same fashion.
I think it's interesting that they're taking the story and setting in a unique direction. Twilight Princess was a fantastic game, but people rightfully complained that it didn't do enough to differentiate itself from Ocarina of Time. Skyward Sword seems like it will be the biggest departure from the Zelda norm yet, and personally, I'm all for it!
Disappointed that the dual-powerup mechanic isn't being revived from Crystal Shards. It looks like a fun romp, but I really rather prefer the Epic Yarn-style deviations from the Kirby norm.
I'm not one to nitpick about graphical horsepower. The most important thing is that it can output 1080p, which was always the Wii's greatest handicap. Differences beyond that will be more subtle in terms of visuals and I think both Sony and Microsoft know that. That's why they aren't in any rush to bring out new consoles. Whether Ninty will be able to convince me to buy multiplatform titles on the Wii U is one question, but I most definitely want to play Nintendo games in high-def with that new controller.
Bought a 3DS on day one in anticipation of this and this alone. Haven't even purchased an actual game for the system yet. But Ocarina of Time shall be mine on Sunday. Hope I get that soundtrack CD!
@Nintomdo64: Apparently the way it works now is you hit a button to "raise" your light up to the ghost, and when it strikes you can strafe around it. This way you never need another analogue input to control the light independently of your movement.
Kiiiinda getting bored of Mario Kart to be honest. But, we'll see. If the new tracks are cool and it incorporates some good new retro tracks, I could be into it.
The eShop has been a very good experience for me so far. The only complaint I have is that when downloading content you are unable to navigate away to the Home screen or browse the shop. Might get annoying for larger titles.
Yeeaaaah, I'm really not nostalgic enough for most GB games to buy them, regardless of price. The only exceptions are Super Mario Land 2 and the original Pokemon games, but I wouldn't buy those Gen1 Pokemons again. I'm much too attached now to the gameplay improvements that have occurred in the last couple of gens. But, SML2, come on over!
It's a shame but it'll likely help drive the cost of the machine down. No need to keep GameCube ports/memory card slots, nor bother with stuffing that hardware in the box. Software emulation would probably not work too well.
edit: @Link-Hero: I doubt that it would be able to emulate GC games well at all. Even medium-high end PCs struggle with PS2 emulation, and the Wii Tu is no better than that. If it were going to emulate anything, the support would have to be perfect, and that's not likely to be possible.

Re: Nintendo UK's Metroid Hub is Open to Visitors
The fact that the Prime Trilogy is being mentioned there makes me think that it's going to get another run. Maybe I should sell mine before then?
Re: First Impressions: Heroes of Ruin
Intrigued, but not yet sold. I've been burned by Square Enix far too often of late.

My DS Lite is the "Enamel Navy" one exclusive to Japan, which I imported for quite a premium. Too bad about that region-locking, eh.
