To be honest, I'm not sure I'll ever be satisfied playing third party multiplatform games on a Nintendo console again. Even if the hardware is technically better, I see it as unlikely to buy Assassin's Creed 3 or GTA V on Project Cafe. That interest died with the Gamecube's transition to Wii. As a Nintendo fan, I'll never stop buying their platforms, but I don't know if they'll be able to recapture that "hardcore audience" in the way they'd want. I believe Cafe will be able to recapture the hardcore Nintendo audience who still love Nintendo titles but were set astray by the Wii. Apart from that... I don't know. I think the future of Nintendo is differentiating itself enough to warrant a purchase of their platforms in addition to one of their competitors. I've happily had a Wii and PS3 since 2008 and I don't think I would ever go back to having only one or the other's successor in the future.
What I find irreplaceable about physical media is that you actually take ownership of it. It's something of value that you possess. Sure, games typically rapidly depreciate in value, so you can't really ever consider it an investment, but if kept in good condition, it will always have some worth. When you have a purely digital service, then you don't really "own" anything. All it is is a license to play a game that you've purchased. Digital products may be good for the industry, and some people may find them convenient, but ultimately I feel they are worse for the consumer, because of what it takes away from them.
Has there ever even been any credible scientific evidence to show that sexualized depictions of animated characters have an effect on an individual's likelihood of committing acts of sexual assault against minors? I haven't done the research, but I would highly doubt this claim. For eff's sake, the lawmakers should use some common sense once in a while. If a person were going to commit rape against a minor, whether he did or did not happen to watch lolita hentai beforehand would not have had a causative role in the actual crime.
I just don't understand this widespread criminalization of drawings that may or may not show minors (whose age is largely arbitrary in the first place). It's completely victimless. Even more than something like drug abuse, which may have a detrimental effect on the user.
This is what happens when laws are made not based on rational thought and evidence, but rather how "creepy" something is.
I absolutely adored this game; the atmosphere, the gameplay, the story, and, of course, Midna. Thanks for putting my emotions into words. With the possible exception of Mario Galaxy 2, Twilight Princess likely remains my favourite Wii title, more than 4 years after its release.
I'm really impressed with what I've seen so far. I just hope it can differentiate itself somehow with its gameplay, since obviously it won't be winning any awards in the graphics department. For a Wii game though, it does look quite striking. The environments are very nice.
I see $350-400 as a solid price. Sure it's expensive, but at least we know they're delivering the goods. You know how Nintendo is with their ideology of profiting on every unit sold. If they gave us a more familiar price then we'd pretty much be getting barely much more power than the Wii has now. This is a good thing. Start saving now!
@161,retro_player_22: I think you should probably expect something similar to the NGP or lower half of the 3DS. It'll definitely still have buttons, no matter what else happens. I'm excited.
It's really not even worth going on the defensive over an off-hand comment from Tretton. He talks a lot of crap, and nobody ever really cares. I severely doubt that his opinion on what a DS is good for is going to change anyone's opinion about either platform. I guess it might win over some people on the fence about getting a PSP or 3DS... if they happen to be in that small demographic that is not already familiar with dedicated handheld gaming platforms, it ridiculously image-conscious, and is also something of a gadget geek. For both of those people in the world, go ahead and buy an NGP this Winter! Good work, Jack.
Not a game I'd expect to see on the Wii, but it looks potentially fun, I suppose. Kinda would've liked to see it in HD though... to be honest. But having said that, the apparently similar Muramasa was for Wii and that game was both gorgeous and excellent.
@aaronsullivan,107: Y'know, at present I don't think it's really a question of whether or not he's making a valid point. Frankly, there might be a smidgen of an argument hidden somewhere in his incendiary, but most of the gaming community is just offended by the assumption that he's an authority on the subject. Clearly, as far as I'm aware, no actual developers — Nintendo included — take him seriously. I think, as (not so) humble denizens of The Internet, it's our job to try and keep his mouth in check. Ultimately, we're the ones who end up reading this schlock, after all.
Facetiousness aside, I don't think any of us take him seriously either.
Vesterbacka is quite possibly one of the most obnoxious trolls in game development right now. He causes a whole lot of commotion for a guy who made one hit title in a sea of unprofitable peers. And instead of working on new games, he keeps iterating over the exact same design ad nauseum. If that's the future of game development, then sorry Peter, I think we're doing just fine here in the present.
@sgotsch,25: Yeah, you can delete them, actually. Go to the leftmost icon and select "Settings," then "Delete friend card." You can choose whom to delete from there.
@MasterGraveheart,28 At the same time, Nintendo offers Parental Control settings. Why not just allow parents to turn off voice chat, messaging, etc. if they're uncomfortable with it? They should know a large part of their audience is adult and deserves these features. It's simply lazy and archaic development practise.
It's pretty abhorrent. I am certain (and there've already been rumours to this effect) that a messaging system will be added at a later date. Probably during the much-touted "May update".
Le sigh. I haven't BSOD'd yet (although I haven't played any 3DS games yet either), but my system did freeze once while in the Home menu. Had to force shutdown.
I just played this game a little, but I can totally confirm that it's awesome. I love the dynamic view. If I didn't already own it on a different system, I'd for sure buy it right now. Unfortunately, I'm poor and will have to wait for a price drop... hopefully that'll happen sooner than later.
First system I get at launch to not grab with a game! Woo! Good thing I don't need one. I've been holding out on Pokemon Black so I could catch 'em all on the 3DS instead. And I think AR games will keep me entertained for a little while. At least until Zelda or whatever comes out. I might get that Devil Survivor Overclocked port as well. That's launch window, right?
Well, we all knew this was coming. Doesn't make it any less frustrating, though.
I don't understand his argument: "I’d be a little sad to see if there was a product that I worked on for a couple of years go on sale for a buck." If the developer sets the price, then how is that even an issue?
Monkey Target is definitely the one thing that keeps me coming back to this series. Without that... I dunno. As with many of the 3DS' initial offerings, I may jump on board once the price drops significantly.
At the moment, I'm utterly obsessed with Mass Effect 2, having clocked a cumulative 100 hours now and climbing (playing it for the first time on PS3). It definitely deserved to win Best Overall Game, although I wouldn't argue against Galaxy 2 either. For Best Gameplay though? If Galaxy 2 didn't take that one, then we'd have a serious problem here... BAFTA. So, good call!

@James Rats! I'd been hoping to get Bowser's Inside Story at a bargain price for months.

Wait, so, are they just making the boxes red, or will this be similar to the Wii Selects discount line?

And here I thought the 3DS was being pitched to distance itself from goofy glasses.

Because arbitrarily aged drawings are clearly the same thing as exploitative pornography of minor human beings.
