Just bought the update. This game had been towards the top of my backlog pile for awhile. I just finished DK (and I despise MKW), so the timing of this works out perfectly.
I’ll likely be working thru my games backlog once I’m done with this. At the current price point for games, I won’t be buying any unless I am really excited about it and the reviews are amazing (still got burned the the MKW dumpster fire) or I’ll be waiting on a sale. For example, I’ve never given Metroid a fair shot (Prime and Dread are both on my switch with less then an hour of playtime). I’ve always struggled with metroidvania’s and FPS games, but these games are so beloved that I’ll be doing one or the other after Kirby. Won’t be paying the upcoming Prime 4 retail price if I don’t fall in love with these 2 games. Also really unsure about Air Riders at the current price point. I bought a lot of games on impulse for the Switch 1 (easy to do when first party games drop to $40 and other AAA games drop to $10-$20). At the current $70-$80 retail, purchases will be far more deliberate and sparse…
Bananza is one of the greatest games ever released. MKW is…not even close. Haven’t even booted it up since the update. No 3 lap option, broken AI, wide tracks for 24 players making even the best tracks boring, straight line racing, half cooked “open world” with nothing to do but collect stickers, online movies rarely filling up this close to launch, racing in a completely straight line almost all of the time, completely useless map, and $80???? How does this game stay at the top of the sales chart except for MK’s track record of amazing games, and bundling it with the console (like when Apple gave everyone an unwanted U2 album then claimed it to be the top selling album of all time). MKW is straight up trash. Developers need to listen to its customers and add a patch to give the option of 3-lap Grand Prix and online. After that, give players something worth doing in the open world as free updates. But, guarantee that the house that Mario built will charge a $20 DLC. Just for a 3 lap option someday…
I got sucked into the hype train with MKW before the mixed user reviews started hitting. I’ve never regretted a purchase more. So, I’ll wait awhile (especially with these insane current game prices). Sorry, not going to go exclusively by the Nintendo fanzine reviews anymore. I’ll consider it if it gets universal acclaim like DK Bananza. Otherwise I’ll just wait for a sale…even if it takes a few years (or pass altogether). MKW has really soured me on Nintendo as a company. Thank goodness Bananza’s creative team was able to knock it out of the park. Most fun I’ve had since Wonder or TOTK…
Looks great, but at $70, I’ll be on the sidelines at first. Bananza was incredible but MKW is strait up trash. Also concerned about replay-ability and the the island mini-game seems gimmicky. They only featured 4 track (lots of characters, costumes and machines…but only 4 tracks). I’ll see what the consensus is before I drop that kind of money after the MKW fiasco…
Game is dead to me. I doubt I’ll boot it up again even if they give us the legacy 3 lap option in Grand Prix and online. Such a broken game. Hopefully, Air Riders will give me a fun racing game for the Switch 2. Otherwise, I’ll stick with 8 deluxe. RIP Mario Kart…great series for over a generation…
Don’t care. Game is dead to me. Not sure I’ll bother booting it back up if they add a 3 lap mode to Grand Prix and online. That would be the bare bones/least effort they could do to fix this mess of a game…
@Real_Obsi so, I give my honest opinion and get flamed for it because I’m not gushing over it? If I enjoy something, it gets a good review, if I find it unplayable…it gets a bad review. Really simple. Disagreeing with the vocal fans is not “review bombing”, it’s an opinion. This game is forcing poorly designed game elements while deliberately preventing long time players from enjoying the core mechanic that has made this series a success for generations. Glad you enjoy it. I don’t. You can either engage in a dialogue, keep scrolling, or make petty attacks on others. Such is the internet today…
Sorry, but this game is a massive disappointment for me. Being forced to play intermissions in Grand Prix and online wrecks the game for me. I haven’t touched it since the latest patch dropped. The AI in single player is awful, the intermissions are boring, the open world is empty and even the tracks are meh (way to wide and straight due to the 24 racers). I might pick it up again if they reintroduce legacy racing, but there are too many other flaws that I doubt I would play it much. If a single ($80) game can kill my enjoyment of a franchise and make me regret a purchase this much, then it’s a 0/10. Just trash…
How is this “review bombing”? Seriously? There is a mechanic in the game that has made the game so unenjoyable that some players find the game unplayable. That sounds like a fair reason to give the game a 0 or 1 user score. Review Bombing is when something unrelated to the book/movie/game (often ideological or political) is used to justify a negative score. For example, when Star Wars/Marvel projects get slaughtered by negative user reviews…BEFORE THE GAME GETS RELEASED (ie: “too woke”)….thats a review bomb. If someone watches the show/plays the game, and something ruins their experience completely, then that is a fair review (regardless if I agree or if I think it’s fair). I do find it disappointing that Nintendo Life has titled this article as “Review Bombing” instead of stating that players are voicing their displeasure with an update…
I am completely bored with this game. It is a lot of driving in a straight line in a ridiculously wide track, and getting obliterated by shells whenever you are in first. Yes, it’s pretty. It’s also boring. I had it at 6/10 BEFORE the update (partially because you were forced to run the intermissions in Grand Prix mode…but also because the open world is empty and desolate…and the insane $80 price tag). The update would have dropped the game to a 3 or 4 since it made the game WORSE). But, Nintendo seems to have noticed that players were doing a workaround to enjoy the game…and they went out of their way to take that away from us. So, I have stopped playing completely and I have rated it a zero. If Nintendo adds a 3 lap option to Grand Prix and online, then I will revise my score back up. But Nintendo needs to add stuff to do in the open world (start with a functional/interactive map) and tweak the AI. For now, I’m playing MK8 (an objectively better game with a lot more value/content for the price) and waiting for DK Bananza…
I’ll tell you what I WON’T be playing…MK World. The game needed a simple patch. Give players a choice about legacy 3 lap vs open world (in Grand Prix and online). Instead, Nintendo rips the scraps of 3-lap races out of players hands. It clear they won’t fix this broken mess and are determined to destroy the game for anyone who doesn’t want to play in the desolate and empty open-world. I wish I never bought this system. Nintendo can go to hell…
I was planning on waiting for a sale in a few years ($70 is too much for any game IMO, so I’ll likely be waiting on sales for most games). The direct probably changed my mind….but I’ll wait for some reviews first. Looks like the Odyssey sequel we never got. If it plays as well and is as creative, then I’ll fork out the $70…
Really, really boring. Need to fix GP to allow both open world and heritage (3-lap) races. Then, a true interactive world map with more interesting missions, ability to race other characters when you cross paths or when you enter a race track (mimicking burnout paradise would be a start) with better rewards (characters, karts, courses, modes, etc). These patches are a bare bones minimum to fix an $80 game…
Mario Kart 8 is an infinitely better game than MK World. If Nintendo patches a bunch of problem and adds a bunch of DLc, it might get World in second place on this list. But, can anyone seriously claim that World (30 tracks, broken GP, empty open world, and lopsided AI is a better game and better value then MK8 with more then triple the number of tracks and balanced AI for only $5 more…
I gave it a 6, but downgrading it to a 5. I’m already bored with this game. That’s really bad for an $80 game. Maybe I’ll get back into it if they ever patch in a legacy Grand Prix…
For me, it’s a solid 6/10. It’s fine, but has some major problems. When we get a (free) patch allowing both “legacy” (3 lap) and open world Grand Prix (solo and online), I’ll bump it to a 7. If they do something with open world/free roam (how about an interactive map like BOTW where we can zoom in, see the roads/landmarks/coins/switches (both the ones that we collected and the ones that we have located) so we can go back later. A burnout paradise vibe would be great (get to a landmark…have the option of doing a race/time trial etc). A story mode would be great too. Make some rewards to keep us engaged besides stickers (characters/costumes/karts). Do all that, and it’s an 8/10. Add course in FREE DLC packs (MK8 gave us 96 tracks for $85 total. Here we got 30 tracks for $80. That will get a 9/10 (10/10 if all of these updates are free). I don’t think this is unreasonable for a $80 launch title…

Need to give a 3 lap option on Grand Prix. Long straightaways is really boring. Definitely NOT a 9/10 game as it is. Probably a 7/10. It has the potential to become a 9/10, but we will need a bunch of patches…
Anyone else get a little annoyed when you noticed that 2 tracks are each used in 2 Grand Prix? It originally looked like we were getting 32 tracks, but there are actually only 30. They’ve never done that in a MK game (except for multiple versions of the same track way back in SNES) and doing it on their first $80 game is really frustrating…
Played it a lot more. The deal breaker for me is still the inability to do a classic 3 lap race in Grand Prix (solo and multiplayer) mode. The open world race format is a nice option (it’s growing on me, but the first 2 laps feel very generic and the (beautiful/well designed) courses are criminally underused. This is an easy patch since 3 laps/legacy racing is already available in vs. Adding this would also double the number of GP races giving a lot more value and replay-ability.
Just adding the second save file is a game changer (but, its absence until now is mind boggling). I’ve put way too much time into this game to erase my save file, but I wanted to re-experience it from the start. It looks glorious too. Love this!
So, I finally figured out how to do 3 laps in any course. VS, don’t select “connected”, pick your first course, pick it again so you don’t have to travel between tracks (I just assumed that it was asking me to select all of the courses I wanted to play up front…whoops). So, that helps. But Grand Prix was getting very old very fast having to race in a straight line and the course as an afterthought. It’s a fine option in addition to classic play, but not instead of classic play. If Nintendo could offer a patch to allow a “legacy Grand Prix” and an “open world Grand Prix “ in single player, multiplayer, and online, my experience would be so much better. Sounds like free roam needs a lot more stuff to do (hopes that comes in a future patch…a story mode might also help). The courses (when I get there), graphics and music are all great!
So disappointed so far. The open world gimmick is wrecking this game. 2/3 of most courses is now driving in a straight line to the course. Only one lap around Toad’s Factory, Shy Guy Bazaar, Wario Stadium, Airship Fortress, etc. I loved these courses but this game is not giving them ANY justice. Hope they make an update where I can just do 3 laps around the 4 courses in grand priz mode. Don’t know what they were thinking, but very boring so far. I’ll be going back to Mari Kart 8 deluxe…

I’ll wait a little longer for it to hit 60-80% off. Doing the same with Hogwarts and Arkham trilogy. Fortunately I just got a switch last year, so I was able to get a discount on some first party Nintendo games, but I buy those day 1 for new releases since I’m not willing to wait 5 years for most of those…
