Re: Super Retro-Cade Launches This Year, Packs Capcom And Data East Classics

phirst

The console looks a bit naff and the controllers have shoulder buttons? If this is supposed to be arcade focused why shoulder buttons?? How many arcades had shoulder buttons???

6 face buttons would have been the best option, I would have liked sticks over pads but I understand that would probably add £40 and they still wouldnt be very good.

bloody shoulder buttons.... I ask you.... Why!!

walk's off shaking head, still muttering about shoulder buttons

Re: Editorial: Is This a Golden Era of Gaming? Absolutely

@drich255 Still haven't bought a switch because I've got so much to play on my WiiU (24 to be precise)

Love my WiiU it really is underrated.

To me the switch is a portable WiiU, which is not a bad thing but I don't need portability in my life. Roll on Metroid Prime 4 I'll have to buy one then.

Re: Niantic Is Facing a Class-Action Lawsuit Over Pokémon GO Fest

phirst

@Rayephi "not really"what? I don't understand how your experience with poor GPS location applies to a company not thoroughly planning the arrival of 20,000 phones in a park. With regards loosing connection in a major city, big buildings and other factors cause radiowave "black spots" which cell companies strive to minimise. Niantic chose the venue, the minimum level of planning should be cell coverage in THEIR chosen area.

Re: Niantic Is Facing a Class-Action Lawsuit Over Pokémon GO Fest

phirst

This lawsuit is totally justified. All problems faced should have been foreseen with in the planning of the event.

How surprising is it that your event that sold 20000 tickets that the local cell network would have an influx on the day of the event of 20000 extra connections.

I’m quite sure Niantic realised that their mobile game would require cellular connectivity. They obviously did not liaise with the cell companies thoroughly enough.

Where was the backup plan? it would have not been out of realms of possibility that Niantic could have setup free Wi-Fi at the event to handle those unable to access via cell networks.

This wasn’t caused by unforeseen events, power failures or forces of nature, it was poor planning by the event organisers. Its robbery via corporate complacency.

Re: Nintendo Switch Has Sold 4.7 Million Units Worldwide

phirst

@electrolite77 I agree in part. The switch is selling better than the WiiU and Nintendo are strugling with supply, WiiU's were more readly available than the Switch.

I think the WiiU (and your figures) showed there are around 5million Nintendo fans globaly that will buy anything they produce. It remains to be seen whether the Switch truly does have the zeitgeist and will make the transition from 10million to 20million quickly.

I hope so, Super hyped for Metroid prime 4

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's Big Switch and 3DS Reveals at E3 on Day One?

phirst

Super Mario Odyssey looks good. The remake of Metroid 2 looks great. Everything else didn't move the needle for me. Yeah I super hyped for Metroid Prime 4 but I was SUPER HYPED for Zelda WiiU and it took 4 years to materialise. Since I'm playing that on WiiU and I don't see Mario been a system seller for me it could be 4 years before I upgrade my WiiU to a switch. Maybe Metroid Prime 4 will come out with the Switch 2. (#flamebait)

A very underwhelming E3 for me the 'spotlight' doesn't hold a candle to the Nintendo Directs in the early WiiU era, sad days.

Also I don't understand the hype for Xenoblade chronicles 2 it looks like a 3DS game next to Xenoblade chronicles X.

Re: Review: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U)

phirst

I have had the WiiU version for a week now and I am loving it. I don't notice frame drops I must not be susceptible to it.

What an amazing game I wish it came out last year but I understand why Nintendo would delay for the Switch. I am disappointed that all the 2nd screen functionality has been removed. I imagine the game pad would have been used for the HUD elements and inventory management leaving the TV running in Pro mode constantly for maximum effect.

If (like me) you haven't got a switch I would fully recommend the WiiU version.

Re: Poll: A Month of Nintendo Switch - Do You Think It's Heading for Success?

phirst

@Anti-Matter Japanese games are fine but will only sell to a small proportion of the western market. If the switch is to succeed globally it needs to apeal to the western market. Its doing well so far but I fear it wont last and after 18 months it will have successfully cemented the demise of the Vita and supplanted the 3DS. In doing so becoming the biggest console in Japan but been largely irrelevant in the west bar the odd major Nintendo releases.

Re: Poll: A Month of Nintendo Switch - Do You Think It's Heading for Success?

phirst

Time will tell, but I'm concerned that

Carts are making 3rd party games on switch more expensive than PS4/XB1.

lack of mainstream western games.

Switch peripherals are expensive compared to competitors.

Frame rate issues on flagship game.

Digital content management woeful compared to competitors.

Absence of VC.

Handheld performance at a home console price.

As much as Nintendo will say they are not competing with PS4/XB1 it is. They are aimed at 18-34's and so is the switch.

I feel that this thing is made for Japan and Nintendo fans. Which is cool but I don't see it taking any major share of either the casual market or the hardcore market. A Wii this is not.

Re: Video: Nintendo Minute Manages to Enjoy 1-2-Switch, Even While Sober

phirst

This game is what most morning TV shows are showing when showing the Switch and why? because audiences love laughing at the presenters. So instead of getting 2mins of air time, the switch is getting a 10min slot to embarrass the presenters. I applaud Nintendo for getting the message out there.

I wont be buying this game and I don't really think Nintendo have aimed it at me. As for the party aspect of it, how many parties have you been to where its quiet enough to hear the switch's speakers?
As a game its looks poor.
As an ice breaker at a party it seems impractical.
As a tool to market the console to the masses it seems BRILLIANT!!

Re: Nintendo Hopes the Switch Can Be A Bridge Between Home Console and Portable

phirst

The Switch clearly not as durable as any previous Nintendo portable (even the Virtual boy) this combined with relatively high price tag make this a portable for young adults and older (maybe responsible teens).
Its also seems quite big for a 7ish year old to hold. The preteen & teen group is a big market for Nintendo I cant see them ignoring. In the near future (2018) I believe Nintendo will replace the 3DS with a new single screen handheld for the pre-teen market. It will similar functionality (no joy-cons) but with less power than the Switch and be priced around the £150 price point. This is what the next Pokemon, Level5 & Lego games etc. will be made for, I am just hoping that the production tools for both the switch and this fictitious handheld are the same so all its games just play on the switch. To this end I have a sneaky suspicion that the new Square Enix game Octopath Traveler is one of these games.

Re: Reaction: The NX Release in March 2017 and How It Changes the Game

phirst

To respond to Damien, I strongly believe that the WiiU has not been a valid option for buyers since late 2015. If Super Mario Maker did tip the scales for a potential owner then the prospect of 2 games and a remake in 2016 was unlikely to do it.

If Nintendo intended to release the NX in late 2016 / early 2017 I am shocked that the WiiU price was not slashed when Super Mario maker released. A £150ish Super Mario Maker bundle would have lead the charge on 18 months of stock clearance leading up to the NX.

I'm surprised that with only 800,000 predicted sales that they have confirmed manufacturing is still ongoing.

I kinda agree with everything/everyone else and Alex's video reflects my feeling of "errr Meh?"

Re: The Game Boy Advance is Now 15 Years Old

phirst

Loved my GBA, I modded it early on with an afterburner light. Never got onboard with the Gameboy due to the poor screen the GBA was the first handheld I thought had good enough graphics to enjoy. I liked the original form factor though I do own a SP as I picked it up for £5 =-0
I'd love to own a modded GBA with a AGS-101 screen. There are still GBA games I want to pick up but I am so time constrained and loathed to increase my backlog.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Wants Us to Download More and Move On From Discs - Will It Work?

phirst

Good grief, thats a lot of comments. I havent read them all (yet) but I know my opinion is the same as many I have read.

The benifits of Physical is that retailers often sell less than RRP and you can replay physical in 20 years time.

With digital the possibility of your storage medium become corrupt or failing is much higher than a pressed disk and as time progresses redownloading the game could stop been an option. (Sony's PSP no longer has access to the store and thats only been obsolete for 4 years)

Nintendo needs to offset this with benifits. Cross buy would help, but I think if games were released digitally at full RRP but 2 or 3 weeks earlier than physical it would increase digital sales without undermining Physical price structure.

Re: Feature: The Biggest Wii U Retail Games of 2015 - Summer Edition

phirst

Looking forward to a few games off the list. Xenoblade Chronicles X is a definite purchase day one. I'm going to pick up Yoshi's Woolly World but might leave it for someone to buy me for my Bday late August.

Star Fox Zero & Devil's Third are next on the list but I'll need a little bit more convincing.

Re: Poll: Vote For Your Ten Must-Play Games On Nintendo 3DS

phirst

Looking forward to the results. I picked up a 2nd hand 3DS for £40 because it seemed to good of deal to miss. Due to it been a random purchase I have not bought a full price game on it yet. That said it slowly dragged me in and I bought a New 3DS on release day. I have just checked my daily records and I have spent 183hrs on the 3DS(s) since Nov 2013.

Below is the list of games I own, due to the limits set out by my collection I don't think I should vote.

Ghost re-con - Future solider √
Aliens Infestation (DS) √
LoZ: Spirit Tracks (DS)
LoZ: Phantom Hourglass (DS)
Need for Speed - The Run
Super Street Fighter IV
Star Trek - Tatical Assault (DS)
Attack of the Friday Monsters
Liberation Maiden
Crimson Shroud
Bugs Vs Ants
The Starship Damrey
AeroPorter

FYI - The DS games are on there as I didn't own a DS and have only played them on the 3DS, backward compatibility Winning!!

Re: Reaction: The Nintendo 'NX', and Why We Think a Unified Platform is the Future

phirst

I really hope this is the replacement for the 3DS with a release in 2017 and I hope that Nintendo do go for the unified system with a replacement for the WiiU in 2019. For quite a while now Nintendo have tried new things on their portables then refined them for the console, NSMB, MK7, SM3DL this seems like the logical next step. With a Unified system all portable games would be playable on the home console but the home console could have exclusive games like Zelda U that require the better specs. The main thing would be display resolution on the portable. Mobiles now have 2K screens but I think a 1080p screen would be sensible with it up scaling to 2k for the home console.
