The LEGO Mario sets keep getting better. They're a ton of fun with a kid and bring their imaginations out. The latest was my son, after playing 3D World for the first time, creating a map/course based on different worlds in that game. Some of these sets are displayable, some just have awesome action elements. Buy what suits you because keeping up with all of them was going to be futile for many of us anyway ...
My 4-year-old and I have had a blast with these. Have Mario, Luigi, and a handful of expansion sets. The ones with play-action elements are definitely fun, and we've found a few ways to come up with games (e.g. build a course and the other plays, play simultaneously for the most coins, play for a specific number of coins, build and rebuild, etc.). A lot of charm to these sets, and the expansions keep getting better and better.
Being able to play retro games online, including simultaneous and pass-and-play, makes it all worth it for me. Have played through Super Metroid, Yoshi's Island, A Link to the Past, and several competitive games with friends I grew up with over the last year. That's the definite value for me above and beyond collections or VC, plain and simple.
I have a feeling that, since this new pack is only offered yearly, that the DLC is purchased and not rented. So it subsidizes the first year at the very least. If they offered a monthly plan, then of course you couldn't throw in the DLC as a purchase, since people could get $25 of content for a much lower cost of one month. Hard to believe that DLC would be rented.
Been really fun with a young kid. Definitely a game where it provides certain guidelines with how to play but no strict rules. Have enjoyed that and the overall build.
One game we play for a challenge is to go through the level trying to get exactly one coin, then exactly two, then three, etc.
Liked 3D Land a lot, especially with the challenge of the extra levels. I love the more linear Mario efforts (though I've come to appreciate the more open/sandbox-style ones with Odyssey and 3D All-Stars). That said, I think 3D World is just so, so creative. It really keeps you guessing and smiling throughout. Both great games!
I've never played nor had interest in Minecraft, but this character looks awesome. It's unique in visual style and (apparently) in play style. Can't ask for much more!!
Was disappointed to not see any mention of an online mode. Playing through A Link to the Past and Super Metroid with two of my best childhood friends with the pass-the-controller features on SNES Online has been a revelation. These collections are awesome values, but I wish these games were hitting the online app to have the ability to play through with friends.
@FantasiaWHT While It's true that Nintendo hasn't taken the paper concept to other franchises, they have extensively used canvas, yarn, and papercraft in the Yoshi and Kirby series. And it's worked well in those cases!
This is absolutely amazing, by the way. Major credit to the creator of this!! It's one thing to demonstrate an idea, but it's another to have spot-on art direction and execution!
Absolutely loved the game back in the day. The Laptop gun, bots with all sorts of crazy personalities, the nighttime cityscape and creepy setting ...
Would love to go through this in the remaster if it ever came to Switch, though I found the Wii version of Goldeneye a pretty ideal update ... inspired by the original game, but a truly fresh/modern take on it.
MM4 vs. MM5 are the games I always go back an forth on. The story in MM4 was pretty great the first time and does have its merits. But it has some roughness around the edges (including music). MM5 has an epic quality to it ... but also some overly long levels that don't accomplish as much as the ones in the other games. You could easily catch me flipping those scores, or putting them both at 8 depending on the day you ask me. For all its flaws, MM1 does some things that I think make it easy to underrate ... breaking into Wily's Castle is an awesome, but subtle, gaming moment. I like every part of MM6 except the story being a dud after two straight good ones.
GREAT update. Panel de Pon (Tetris Attack) is one of my favorite puzzle games along with Dr. Mario. Will lose hours playing that in online two-player. I bought Wild Guns Remastered when it was on sale for $10, but this would have been a great way to try it out for the first time at the very least. Any online two-player game should be viewed as a positive. Not familiar with the others, but I think this was well worth the wait and not at all what I would have expected them to add.
@stevep @Alucard83 If you flick down on the right control stick in this one, you get a higher camera angle that's basically what you're talking about ...
@QBertFarnsworth Well, I do think it's different in that there's an actual quality difference that sometimes only becomes apparent when playing demanding games. But, yes, nostalgia too!
"I still say you're better off buying one of the 8BitDo 3rd party controllers that actually have all modern buttons and can be used with any game, but hey, these are neat too, I guess."
@HeavyArms55 I see this often and understand the sentiment ... but I disagree. Playing a precision platformer (Mega Man Legacy Collection) with the NES/SNES controller vs. my 8BitDo SF30 Pro shows the quality of Nintendo's controller. Nintendo's classic d-pads are just far more precise, as well as their controllers having generally better feel to the face buttons. I can only speak to the 8BitDo that I have, and it is a tremendously versatile and reasonably priced controller. But if you can spring for Nintendo's NES/SNES controllers, I highly recommend it. I did.
Not only because of the quality of the game, but because of how well Yacht Club Games is treating its fans, I just enthusiastically double dipped on Shovel Knight by buying the 3DS version. So happy to support them (through the Amiibo as well!).

Re: Nintendo Switch 2 System Transfer: How To Move All Games, Saves, Profiles From Switch 1
Does play time transfer with just an existing account added to the Switch 2, or do I need to transfer?
Re: Talking Point: Does Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Need A Full Remake?
I'd just need the 3DS version ported to Switch with a higher resolution—that remake was excellent!

It always surprises me how low the peak sales numbers were given the series' pedigree (and my outright love for it!).

Re: Talking Point: Which Video Game Song Could You Listen To For Ten Hours?
The ending theme (Protoman's) from Mega Man 3. Would normally go for something upbeat, but that is just too epic!

@Maulbert Love it! Here would be my ratings:
MM1: 8
MM2: 10
MM3: 10
MM4: 7
MM5: 8
MM6: 9
MM4 vs. MM5 are the games I always go back an forth on. The story in MM4 was pretty great the first time and does have its merits. But it has some roughness around the edges (including music).
