I still have that NyxQuest demo from last time! This is terrible - I'd at least expect some crappy Wiiware shovelware. They shouldn't split their downloads between the Wii and handheld consoles since I have neither a DSi or a 3DS.
A lot of you are misinterpreting what I said. Mario Galaxy is different to Mario 64 - it has evolved and I hope it continues to. I've not said I'm after a Mario Galaxy 3. What I am questioning is why the developer is saying these games are getting away from the core experience when these are some of the finest Mario games ever made.
By all means innovate, change the formulae and make different Mario games - just don't label true classics like they're some sort of failure or experiment gone wrong as they're anything but.
"I feel like the core experience is something that we may have started to get away from a little bit when we first started presenting games in 3D like in Super Mario 64."
Erm Nintendo want to move away from a formulae that has produced some of the finest games of all time? Who would even class the Mario Galaxy games any less than a masterpiece? Guess the people who made them it seems ...
A re-release of the GameCube's Collector's Edition with additions of Wind Waker would have been nice ready for anyone getting the Wii U since the GameCube versions will no longer work.
Even though the games are more famous and I barely ever saw the show, the name Zelda always reminds me of that evil old witch robot thing from Terrahawks before the princess from the game.
I'm not moaning about a new controller but a new EXTRA controller. I was hoping it'd be an evolution of the wii remote with a touch screen, not something entirely new. Generally you'd only have one controller for basic play - the Wii U has three now!
Yeah - as a massive Nintendo fan even I felt the Wii U looked like crap. Basically they announced everything I didn't want from the machine - especially since they included ANOTHER controller. So, for basic play, you now need this new controller, wii remotes, nunchuks and classic controllers.
I guess I was hoping the touchscreen to be incorporated into an evolved wii remote along with support for GameCube pads. The rumoured specifications also seem below what I'd expect - at least double the power of the PS3. I know graphics arn't everything but I can't see many people who already own a PS3 or 360 getting excited for this at all.
Oh this is so stupid - Australia seem like they need to sort themselves out with regards to game ratings. So much gets banned over there because I don't think they have an adult rating for games at all (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
This also reminds me of another Australian news story where there were talks about making images of women with small breasts illegal no matter what their age.
Not really - I think it's disgraceful to disregard gaming's past like most companies do. Would you only consider watching films from the past five years? I agree with moving on to new things as well but to forget the past just leads to ignorance and the loss of art that consits of years of development and millions in cost. A lot of work goes into these games - years of people's lives. They shouldn't be forgotten so easily just because hardware has advanced.
Not everyone has the luxury of having multiple consoles, though. Sometimes compromises have to be made - it's not practical or fair for someone with a family to clutter up a room with old gaming consoles. When the new one comes out the choice is keep the old one or get the new one.
Not really - I don't see why a line has to be drawn. The older the generation, the easier it is to emulate. It's the previous generation that's the difficult one (as with PS2 on PS3 and Xbox on the 360). The great thing about the Wii was it was compatible with all previous Nintendo consoles - it's not practical to support old cartridges, which were put onto the VC, but the impression was disc based systems would always work from now on. Since the Wii is practically a GameCube anyway and software can make the internal storage and wireless controllers work instead of needing controller and memory card ports, there really isn't an excuse. Cost and effort are absolutely minimal in this case - only conclusion I can come to is to force us to buy our old games again.
How is it the worst reason? With PC gaming I'll be able to get all the new titles and keep my favourites. My choice, as the Wii U stands, is discard all my favourite games or keep them and not get new ones. Instead I'll keep all my old favourites on my Wii, which I'll keep under my TV, and get new titles on the PC. I'm hardly missing out on the future of gaming as the PC always adapts to it - infact it's generally ahead of the curve in terms of power.
@BXXL - you don't need GameCube adapters or memory card ports, though, do you? They could simply make the Classic Controller compatible with it and store save data on the system itself like the PS3 does with PS1 games - that also doesn't have PS1 ports and PS1 memory card slots.
This decision means I will NOT be buying a Wii U. My GameCube collection is bigger than my Wii collection, I still play them more and I can only have one console under the TV (so keeping Wii and getting Wii U not an option).
I'm not going to stay in the past, though. I'm going to move on to PC gaming after this generation. I like to keep and enjoy my old titles but don't like the clutter of multiple consoles. With PC gaming I'll be able to do that - it's just a shame I'll miss out on the latest Zelda and Mario titles but rather that than discard my entire GC collection.
EDIT: Oh and about GC VC - not a chance. I've spent hundreds of pounds on these games and I'm not spending more on titles I already own. It's fine as an additional option (like PS1 games on the PS Store along-side PS1 backwards compatibility). Besides a lot of my favourites (such as Crazy Taxi, Rogue Squadron, Capcom Vs SNK 2 etc) will never make it to the VC due to the original developers no longer existing or because of licensing issues (or butchered beyond recognition like PS3/360 Crazy Taxi). Damn - I'm so gutted about this.
As a child I, personally, had no interest in games until after I was 10 years old. I didn't even own a console until after then (although I had played a few arcade games). I wonder what has changed - it's not like games weren't around when I was a kid, but I couldn't have cared less about gaming.
Paying for digital content doesn't work - it's making money at the moment but piracy is becoming more and more common. The reason it doesn't work is times have changed and digital content is freely available everywhere - it has simply lost its value. At the moment companies are trying to keep the prices of games, films and music the same as when they came on physical media, which is just hurting things further. These versions also have restrictive DRM - people wonder why they should pay so much for such limiting software when they can get it for free.
I'm not condoning piracy and I don't have a solution to the problem, but I think things will just change gradually. The best answer I can come up with is offer software dirt cheap and with no restrictions as I reckon people will pay for it then. Basically consumers determine what the value of something should be, not the companies - if it's too much then people won't buy it, just as they're doing with digital media now. The advantage of cartridges and discs is at least people know they're owning something and it gives their purchase some value.
"The issue isn't about young kids playing this game, rather it's about the potential child molesters who might buy it, get ideas and commit child abuse."
Yes but look at Kasumi - do you honestly think she looks like a child? She resembles an exaggerated adult woman - the only reason she's considered under age is because the developers wrote "17" on her character profile.
It kind of reminds me of the video game Snatcher - in one scene you catch a girl in the shower who, in the Japanese version, is 14 but her age was changed to 18 in the west. The scene is still exactly the same in both, the only difference being an age stated earlier in the game. So, by this reasoning, would the Japanese version be considered child porn and the US version not, despite being exactly the same?
Also, I'd just like to point out, I hate the idea of people thinking we'll "get ideas" like the population is just a bunch of mindless drones who can't think for ourselves. I think the majority of the population is more intelligent than the people making the censorship decisions.
I'm more shocked about that manga artist being charged. Drawings arn't actual children and do not have an age. If someone drew Kasumi, for example, her age is whatever age you say it is (she certainly doesn't have the figure of someone who is underage).
I feel kind of glad the Wii is dying - it generally means a few scattered, but high quality releases giving me the time and money to get them all. Infact the Wii is the only popular gaming machine I've owned since the Megadrive (Saturn, Dreamcast and GameCube inbetween) so I've been finding it hard to cope with keeping up this generation.
Looks like Wiiware is dead now and, shockingly, Nintendo seem more focused on the VC!
Well, Chrono Trigger, it's a definate purchase for me even though I've never played it before. I'm enjoying Final Fantasy 3 at the moment too (another game I've never played) and I'm wondering if I should wait to finish that first or just get Chrono Trigger now? Hmm.
There's no way phone gaming will replace games consoles. When I get in from work and fancy a bit of gaming I want to sit on the sofa and enjoy it on the TV with a nice big screen, great visuals and booming sound. I have the option to play games on my phone and on DS too but I simply just don't fancy that unless I'm just lying in bed or out and about.
Digital only distribution wont take off just yet either because, at the moment, it's too restrictive. We get a worse deal than the pirates who have nice DRM free games they can transfer wherever they like. In the past pirates used to get poor quality discs, photocopied instruction manuals etc but now they have the better deal. Software companies are selling an inferior product to what the pirates give away for free, so that has to be sorted first.
"This is often a criticism amongst Zelda fans: nobody wants to play a game where they're somebody's lackey. The Zelda series has always been about discovery and tackling everything at your own pace and in your own way"
Er what? Is someone forgetting "listen"? I find the fairies in both N64 games to be much worse than Midna.
It's definately my favourite Zelda game - it's the only one where I haven't spent days wandering around with no clue where to go next. This one gives you just the right amount of information so you can work out what you have to do.
Wind Waker received a lot of hate too at the time - it seems everything but Ocarina is considered bad these days, wheras I prefer Wind Waker and Twilight Princess. Rose tinted specs, maybe? We'll see in the future how people see these games but Wind Waker is already starting to get the love.
You know I can't see why Nintendo wouldn't release Star Fox 2 on the VC. Well I can see why, it was cancelled, but it'd be an awesome use of online distribution. Polish it off and give it a release - people will love to play a brand new SNES game that was developed in the mid-90's. Retro-looking games are all very well, but this would be the real thing and people would snap it up.
Of course, the original still has to be released first...
Edit: Almost forgot the reason I was posting ... I remember reading about these guys in the newspaper in the '90's.
Best news ever! Although there have been many Shining games withing the last ten years - all of which abandoned the awesome battle system of 1-3.
I really, really hope it uses the battle system of the first three games, as that was what Shining Force was all about. It's just not Shining Force otherwise...
Edit: and NOT on 3DS as I don't own one lol. Wii please.
A review is a review and is one person's oppinion. I say kudos to Nintendolife for not being bias and reviewing a game as they saw fit, regardless of an interview and kudos to the developers for giving an interview and expressing their own thoughts regardless if it was well received by the interviewer.
Afterall, a review score does not determine how every single person will perceive the game. Some will love it, some will hate it - the reviewer thought it was average.
"It may have just been a glorified Super NES game."
It wasn't even glorified - it was just a Super NES game! Anyway, I'm betting the reason this has sold so well is because of people buying up a ton of copies for ebay - making it not actually a rare title and, therefore, practically worthless. Well done - enjoy your 14 copies of one of the Wii's most popular games.
There's no way this is the new Nintendo machine - it'll use a form of the Wii-remote. Also the picture quality is terrible - this is the 2011, if you're working around electronic giants you're going to have access to a phone/camera with a higher resolution than something from the 90's.
@Wheels2050 Well since the rumours are all saying about Wii backwards compatibility, I'd say the GameCube would also be a given since it's essentially the same hardware - if they can get one running, then the other will be a breeze.
It has to be compatible with the Wii and GameCube discs (seems likely) and you must be able to transfer your VC/Wiiware collection - if not, I probably wouldn't get it and stick to the PC instead.
I'm not sure I'd be interested in downloadable Dreamcast games, though - on the 360/PS3 they're butchered to hell. Crazy Taxi has lost the original locations and music, Sonic Adventure is a terrible port, only Space Channel 5 part 2 instead of the original because it has a smaller file size, Soul Calibur missing most features and the others unlikely due to licensing rights. I'd prefer it if they just allowed the drive to read GD Roms so the original discs can be played.
It will come! Seriously, how would it not be released in the West? A massive game that has the hardcore gamers drooling with anticipation when there's a huge drought of Wii core titles. We're going to get this and we'll also be getting a new Star Fox and F-Zero too - mark my words.
No, I'm saying it's not our concern to worry about it. If Nintendo's lawyers have a problem then that's up to them.
Some of you remind me of those people at work who report you to management because you brought a pocket tv into work during the world cup. Killjoy is the appropriate term.
Oh you people just chill out and enjoy them. Unless Nintendo come up waving a cease and desist notice, I wouldn't worry about it. Don't take it upon yourselves to become Nintendo's legal department - there's no rule book we need to follow on a site such of this, just a set of guidelines set by the owners.
If you are really going to worry about the legality of some digitised LCD games from over 30 years ago, you need to relax more.
No mention of Castle of Illusion, which closly rivals the Megadrive version - unless this is just a list of feasible games. You may as well throw a few unlikely ones in, though - afterall, we'll probably get all of those.
OK I need to ask - is Final Fantasy 3 the one everyone raves about being one of the best RPGs of all time? Like if I don't really play Final Fantasy games and I decide to just get one of them, this is the one I should get?
Also I was just about to complain and say "yeah bet it's in bloody America and we have to wait a year for it" so that's a nice surprise.
I think there will always be two markets - there's no way Apple has doomed Nintendo because, despite the popularity of Iphone apps, they're never going to replace a good Super Mario/Metroid/Zelda game.
Saying that, the app games will also exist too because they're cheap and quick to play. Most people generally play them whilst travelling or whilst having to wait somewhere. I personally never download apps - I have some games on my phone but they're emulated so not the same. There'll always be people like me who want a high quality title over a simple puzzle game.
I'm tempted to get all the Bit Trip games - I bought Flux after playing the demo of Beat (and I played that demo so much!). I'm actually thinking of buying Beat now that I've finished Flux because I just want more. The other games don't seem quite as appealing to me as the Pong games - it's the simplicity that makes it so great.
The review scores for the other games are good so I may check them out - but Flux and Beat are fantastic games. I'd much rather sit and play one of those games than a more modern looking retail release. There's just something great about sitting on your sofa playing a game where all you want to do is do better than your last game - I wish more games were like this.
@Vonseux - I was kind of hoping a WiiWare conversion rather than an emulation. Smooth over the graphics a bit but still keep that nice 32-bit feel. It's very unlikely - but, you never know, they could always make a new game on there with the same feel to it.
Well, OK - if it means there's even a slight chance I can play a decent Shining Force again without having to dig it out on the Saturn, then it'll be worth it.

There's no way this is the new Nintendo machine - it'll use a form of the Wii-remote. Also the picture quality is terrible - this is the 2011, if you're working around electronic giants you're going to have access to a phone/camera with a higher resolution than something from the 90's.
Re: Talking Point: What You Want in a New Nintendo Home Console
@Wheels2050 Well since the rumours are all saying about Wii backwards compatibility, I'd say the GameCube would also be a given since it's essentially the same hardware - if they can get one running, then the other will be a breeze.
Re: Talking Point: What You Want in a New Nintendo Home Console
Re: Rumour: Wii 2 has Blu-ray Drive, Controller Contains a Screen
Erm Sony does not own Blu Ray.
Re: European Virtual Console Gets Chrono Trigger in Quarter 2
This is good, right?
Re: Nintendo Buys Up TheLastStory.com, Points to Nintendo.com
It will come! Seriously, how would it not be released in the West? A massive game that has the hardcore gamers drooling with anticipation when there's a huge drought of Wii core titles. We're going to get this and we'll also be getting a new Star Fox and F-Zero too - mark my words.
Re: Retro Handheld Games Now Digitised on the Internet
@jesussaves
No, I'm saying it's not our concern to worry about it. If Nintendo's lawyers have a problem then that's up to them.
Some of you remind me of those people at work who report you to management because you brought a pocket tv into work during the world cup. Killjoy is the appropriate term.
Re: Retro Handheld Games Now Digitised on the Internet
Oh you people just chill out and enjoy them. Unless Nintendo come up waving a cease and desist notice, I wouldn't worry about it. Don't take it upon yourselves to become Nintendo's legal department - there's no rule book we need to follow on a site such of this, just a set of guidelines set by the owners.
If you are really going to worry about the legality of some digitised LCD games from over 30 years ago, you need to relax more.
Re: Features: The Game Gear Games We Need on 3DS Virtual Console
No mention of Castle of Illusion, which closly rivals the Megadrive version - unless this is just a list of feasible games. You may as well throw a few unlikely ones in, though - afterall, we'll probably get all of those.
Re: Square Enix Brings More SNES Goodies to Virtual Console
OK I need to ask - is Final Fantasy 3 the one everyone raves about being one of the best RPGs of all time? Like if I don't really play Final Fantasy games and I decide to just get one of them, this is the one I should get?
Also I was just about to complain and say "yeah bet it's in bloody America and we have to wait a year for it" so that's a nice surprise.
Re: Review: Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition (3DS)
I'm still gutted this isn't on the Wii! Sort it out, Capcom!
Re: Iwata Hits Out at Smartphone and Social Network Game Developers
I think there will always be two markets - there's no way Apple has doomed Nintendo because, despite the popularity of Iphone apps, they're never going to replace a good Super Mario/Metroid/Zelda game.
Saying that, the app games will also exist too because they're cheap and quick to play. Most people generally play them whilst travelling or whilst having to wait somewhere. I personally never download apps - I have some games on my phone but they're emulated so not the same. There'll always be people like me who want a high quality title over a simple puzzle game.
Re: Features: The History of BIT.TRIP, Part 2
Re: Lend Your Voice to the Save Our Shining Force Campaign
@Vonseux - I was kind of hoping a WiiWare conversion rather than an emulation. Smooth over the graphics a bit but still keep that nice 32-bit feel. It's very unlikely - but, you never know, they could always make a new game on there with the same feel to it.
Re: Lend Your Voice to the Save Our Shining Force Campaign
Well, OK - if it means there's even a slight chance I can play a decent Shining Force again without having to dig it out on the Saturn, then it'll be worth it.
