Re: Sega Forever Launch Marred By Terrible Emulation

fchinaski

Decided to give Phantasy Star II a whirl against my better judgement and not only it runs like a turd but the ads also didn't go away after the purchase: app simply crashed midway through and now I have $1,99 less in my account and an ad riddled uplayable mess. WAY TO GO SEGA.

Re: Review: Cave Story+ (Switch)

fchinaski

Played it on the DS when it was released on the DSi Ware store, but this looks way better in comparison. Maybe I'll get it when I finally get a Switch, but on the other hand I still have the 3DS version here unplayed... Hm...

Re: Here's How Dragon Quest Heroes II On Switch Shapes Up Against The PS4 Version

fchinaski

@nhSnork I see what you mean, but you're underselling U4. It's not just about crisper picture and cinematics. It's about scope, the size and level of detail of the environments, realistic lighting and climatic effects, physics and intelligent soundscapes that change depending on the environment. None of this could come close to be achieved on the PS3. I'm only saying any argument saying that there isn't "that much of a leap" between the two machines is largely uninformed.

Re: Here's How Dragon Quest Heroes II On Switch Shapes Up Against The PS4 Version

fchinaski

I love Nintendo as much as you guys, but some of you sound downright delusional. DQH is not a heavy game graphically, and they had to make compromises to have it (apparently) running smooth on the Switch. This is worrying, and you know it. Third party support might dwindle down the line because of sheer lack of power. Again.
And to say the PS4 isn't a leap in relation to the PS3 is a pipe dream, sorry. Of course it wouldn't be as striking as the leap from PS2 to PS3, but play Uncharted 4 and we'll talk later.
Again, I love Nintendo, and I have high hopes for the Switch, but let's keep it real at least.

Re: Review: Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (3DS)

fchinaski

@Lewieboy124 In a sense, DQVII is as Dragon Quest as a game can get, so if you want to really have a bona fide DQ experience, the DQ VII remake will probably be a great start. Don't get me wrong, though: VIII is an AMAZING game, but also a bit of a departure of the classic DQ style. I consider DQ VII to be the last of the old-school DQs. The good thing is that, with this remake, you get a modern coat of paint as a bonus!

Re: Review: Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (3DS)

fchinaski

@Dakt

Whereas IX had no party interaction, VII has one of the best cast of characters of the series history.

Whereas IX had a barebones, almost lazy, class system (in which you unexplainably dropped to Lv. 1 when switching classes on top of that), VII has one of the most deep and rewarding class systems ever conceived.

Whereas IX had a very thin story and little sense of progression, VII has a huge world to recreate and explore and a story that builds slowly but surely to become one of the most ambitious of the whole series.

So, yeah, you can expect it to be a whole lot better than IX.

Re: Video: This Guy Loves Nintendo Way More Than You Do

Funny how some people goes all HE HAS AN OBSESSIVE-COMPULSIVE DISORDER without even knowing the guy. I know a bunch of collectors who have a very healthy relationship with their hobby and a life out of it to boot, and beign a collector myself I can only say this is a very impressive collection and congratulate the guy for it.

Re: Bayonetta on Wii U Bewitches as the Best Version

fchinaski

@FragRed Yeah, I've been noticing this as well. In my experience, when a game is generally received with scores that go from 7 to 9, it usually means that you will enjoy it if you like the genre and maybe even personally score it higher. Anyway.

Re: Bayonetta on Wii U Bewitches as the Best Version

fchinaski

I don't get why people think 8 is a mediocre score. It means the game is very good with minor flaws in the eyes of the reviewer. Many games, movies, books will fall into this category (very good, but not stellar) and still provide solid, enjoyable and great experiences. Nines and tens are for masterpieces/near masterpieces.

Re: Square Enix Wants To Bring Dragon Quest VII To The West, But Doesn't Know If You'll Bite

fchinaski

For the people saying they could use the original translation, please re-read the article: all DS remakes share the same style of translation that has been used since VIII, updating not only spell names an item names, but aiming to create different types of speech for each character.

As a professional translator, I can assure you that the PS1 translation is unusable. It has to be translated from scratch — simply updating the existing translation would result in a complete mess and it would prove more difficult to update it to the standards of the DS remakes than to re-translate it from scratch. They have to re-translate it not only because of this, but also because certainly the remake also has an updated script in Japanese.

Re: Square Enix Wants To Bring Dragon Quest VII To The West, But Doesn't Know If You'll Bite

fchinaski

I remember that the SquareEnix blog published a post sometime ago asking fans of the company what would they want to see next on Western shores: the comment box was literally flooded with DQVII localization requests.

Problem is, people are very vocal when it comes to this kind of localization, but this doesn't necessarily reflect on sales numbers. I wouldn't be suprised if even more than half of the people that scream YES, PLEASE won't even buy the game if it happens or buy it later on when it's cheaper (which doesn't help either).

Having said that, I guess this gives us a LITTLE hope at least. I'm currently playing the original version and would gladly play the remake right after it.

Re: Timespinner Looks Like an Awesome Pixel-Based 2D Metroidvania, and It's Coming to 3DS

fchinaski

It does look interesting, but I don't get overexcited with pixel art/retro feel by itself any longer. From what is shown, it can still be a pretty generic "homage" to the platformers/metroidvanias of yore. The kind of thing that when, say, Gameloft does, people tend to call a rip off, but when it's "indie" many choose to put their pink glasses on from the start.

Having said that, I'm not crazy about the fact that I'm seeing a lot, ahem, inspiration from Castlevania: SotN: in the sense of replicating screens and enemy placing. I expect more from developers than direct "homages" like that.

Re: Shin Megami Tensei IV Confirmed For Q3 eShop Release In Europe

fchinaski

I'm just glad it's getting here somehow. More and more I can see the benefits of digital-only — and this comes from a collector of older video games. Games such as SMT IV soon turn out to be a pain to find if they go retail, especially in some countries, and get overpriced on eBay in no time because of that. At least on the eShop it's always conveniently there. Retail is great for big releases, but for cult games it sucks if you're not at a big city and have to resort to buying on the internet, shipping fees etc. No game stores where I live would store SMT IV for sale. One copy or two would appear in the first few weeks and than it would be gone forever.

Re: Matters Of Import: A Peek Into The Tragically Unobtainable World Of Dragon Quest X

fchinaski

@Lord Because voice chat is free and needs no maintenance right? This has nothing to do with the translation. Trust me, the translation is the cheapest investment of all elements involved. It's the overall cost of maintaining an online structure for a MMO in a console with a very limited install base (assuming that we would get the Wii U version, since the Wii is pretty much done for) that no one knows if it will flop or not that is the real culprit.

Re: Matters Of Import: A Peek Into The Tragically Unobtainable World Of Dragon Quest X

fchinaski

@Chi As a translator, I'm pretty sure the translators were at the lowest possible end in terms of payment :/

Unfortunately, the DS remakes weren't able to repeat IX's stellar performance, and I was pretty surprised when Nintendo jumped in to distribute VI on the West. But due to low sales again, I can understand why they don't seem interested anymore. It's sad, but understandable. I guess VII for the 3DS would fare better nonetheless, since the 3DS seems to be doing very well thank you around here.

Re: 3DS Hack Removes Region Locking For Retail Cartridges

fchinaski

@russellohh Nothing to do with Brazil being terrible. It's the same as everywhere in the world where taxes apply: you get a note from the mail with the value and go to the nearest mail office to pay and collect the parcel. It's what I do here in Portugal also, whenever I have to pay taxes for somenthing I've ordered from the US.

Re: 3DS Hack Removes Region Locking For Retail Cartridges

fchinaski

@russellohh No taxes for you. When it gets there, customs can apply taxes up to 60% the value of the product. And when I lived in Brazil I never, ever received a game in a week. I have friends that are waiting for packages from October 2013 back there. It's not so simple as you're trying to make it.

Re: 3DS Hack Removes Region Locking For Retail Cartridges

fchinaski

Not to mention the need for international credit cards and/or PayPal accounts etc. I'm not defending piracy, but in Europe I can go to the nearest mall and buy used for 5 bucks, until a few years ago this was impossible in Brazil, and to my knowledge retail stores still don't have used game policies. Things are starting to change, but it's a slow process.
