Re: Review: EarthBound (Wii U eShop)

bahooney

Corbie's reviews are what attracted me to the site some five or six years ago. He has such a knack for writing! I usually just scroll down to the conclusion of each review (unless I'm really on the fence about a particular game) but with Corbie's, I always read the whole thing. Masterfully written, good sir.

Re: Earthbound Arrives on the Wii U Virtual Console Today

bahooney

@Ren It's only on Wii U. It's almost like a book, with RPG elements. The story, charm, and art style are incredible. Minimal grinding. I'll say this: I hate RPG's, seriously just don't like 'em, but EarthBound is my favorite game of all time. It's a masterpiece. I had no expectations when I first played it five years ago, and I was blown away.

Re: Earthbound Set for the Wii U Virtual Console Today

In before "9.99?! Hermagerd, SNES games should be liek five bucks, 8 at most. Why is it 10? Oh well, buying it anyway. Snarf snarf snarf."

Guys. I would pay twenty bucks for a legal way to play this. Heck, I paid 70 for the cartridge! I swear, the smart phone, iOS-driven mindset of the modern consumer is driving me insane... You get what you pay for in this case. In fact, more than what you pay for. This isn't a game that was developed by Rovio. It's a full-blooded, SNES golden era RPG. Seriously, appreciate that you're getting it at all!

Re: Soapbox: When It Comes To Software Support, The Grass Isn't Always Greener

bahooney

really well written soapbox! I love these articles. And furthermore, I agree with you completely. As a consumer with extremely limited funds, I always know I make the right decision to buy Nintendo hardware and it's software. It's always captivating, always engaging, and always a ton of fun with friends gathered on the same couch. I couldn't give two flutes about online gaming! FPS's? Who needs 'em? Seriously though, Nintendo scratches my gaming itch time and time again. I feel I definitely made the right choice with my 3DS and Wii U.

Re: Nintendo Reveals The 2013 Club Nintendo Elite Rewards

I implore of anyone who is on the fence about which gift to snag, PLEASE do yourself a favor and get the Majora's Mask CD! Nintendo CD soundtracks have notoriously gone up in price, into the $50's and beyond, so if you're ever in a financial bind, it's quite the investment. I still have my OoT3D CD sealed!

Re: Miyamoto: HD Development "Took More Time Than Originally Anticipated"

bahooney

I can understand everyone's pessimism. My patience with Nintendo, and specifically Iwata, is waning. You can't tell me they haven't been observing other developers, maybe even conversing with partners about HD development. They had to test the hardware and start builds of games before it was released. This makes no sense. Nintendo used to be the leaders of the graphical pack.

Re: Nintendo Wins Another Court Battle with R4 Cartridge Manufacturers

bahooney

@jestermx6 Same here, my friend. There are so many obscure games from the consoles that you mentioned that fetch high prices on ebay and that the developer sees no compensation from. Shantae is a good example! Now that it's coming to 3DS VC, I /have/ to pick it up to show my support. I did the same thing with the Oracle games.

Re: Miyamoto: Mario Will Likely Return To Single-Player

bahooney

@Metal_Sonic Woahhh, you have an advance-copy? AND it sucks? I'm going to take your word for it. I'm just really impressed that you can formulate an opinion on a game that nobody else here has played and hasn't released yet. Too cool, mighty jelly!

Re: Nintendo Download: 4th July (Europe)

bahooney

@manu0 Pretentious?! Dude, I remember back in 2008 Brawl got released like a week early at Sears, it was this huge fiasco. My friend managed to snag a copy, I was beyond stoked. Admit it. If you got a game early that you had been anticipating for a long time, you'd be stoked.

Re: Microsoft Execs Thought They Owned Donkey Kong After Acquiring Rare

bahooney

@Psychomalone But you're forgetting the greats of Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Kameo, Viva Pinata, and BK: N&B. I know people love to be bent out of shape about the M$ buyout and then go on a rant remembering the "good old days" of Rare... but honestly? Other than Kinect $ports, triple-a title after triple-a title from the fine devs at Rare. I proudly own every post-M$ Rare title and love them to death (except for PDZ and KS1+2 of course).

Re: First Impressions: Yoshi's New Island

bahooney

@Wowfunhappy The quote was "Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good.” - Shigeru Miyamoto

And then here: http://www.n-sider.com/gameview.php?gameid=82&view=dev

Apparently Miyamoto caught some flack from Yamauchi & Co. because the Super Mario World sequel - Yoshi's Island - didn't look nearly as good as Donkey Kong Country (nor did it sell as much). When Shigeru Miyamoto first demonstrated the game to Nintendo's marketing department, it was rejected. Nintendo EAD had to re-do the graphics and Miyamoto was said to be not entirely happy about it. "Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good," he said. Years later, Miyamoto reflected on his attitude toward the title.

“I think that it happened after Donkey Kong Country was introduced," said Shigeru Miyamoto. "In comparison with the graphics of the Super Donkey Kong, there was not enough punch to Yoshi's Island. That was what I was told by the marketing people. I intensified my hand-drawn touch on Yoshi's Island from the initial part of the program. Everybody else was saying that they wanted better hardware and more beautiful graphics instead of this art. Even while I was working on the Super Mario World, I was thinking that the next hero should be Yoshi. Other people have created the games based upon Yoshi... Yoshi's World Hunters, Yoshi's Egg, Yoshi's Cookie and so forth--games that I don't really like. So I decided to make an authentic Yoshi game."

Re: First Impressions: Yoshi's New Island

bahooney

@rmeyer lol. just lol. Yoshi's Story is a proper Yoshi game. It has the word "Yoshi" in it. "The editor is too young and sounds like he never played the original." He writes for a Nintendo fansite. I seriously doubt it.

Re: First Impressions: Yoshi's New Island

bahooney

I beat this game once I got the GBA version as part of the Ambassador's program. I beat it solely for the fact that it's considered such a staple of any SNES gamer's catalog.

I did not enjoy myself. I absolutely loathe baby Mario's whining. It's triggered at the slightest hit of damage. It's terrible.
The art style was pretty endearing, but after reading about Miyamoto's bitterness towards Rare for DKC's success and use of pre-rendered graphics, and then reading that he chose the art style to be the antithesis of DKC, it just kind of pissed me off. Nothing about the game really sticks out to me. There's a lot of mechanics I really didn't like. Those star things. Yoshi transformations. Why can't I simply aim as opposed to have the cross-hair flying up and down to shoot an egg.

tldr; wah, I'm skipping this.

Re: Nintendo Download: 27th June (North America)

bahooney

I love Nintendo's decision-making! Vegas Stakes is such a rad game, I don't get what all the commotion is about. Plus, why would you want more than one VC game a week? Easy on the wallet, easy on the back catalog of future games to release. I don't even want those awesome dlc street pass games; why expand the plaza?

Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D Knocked Off The Top Spot in Japanese Sales Charts

bahooney

The main reason I'm slowly becoming more and more a Nintendo-only gamer is because of the fantastical setting of all of their games. I'm so, so, so sick and tired of realistic shooting violence games. Ironically, as I've grown older my tastes in games have gone from loving GTA and FPS's to death when I was 14-19, and now I'm getting more and more invested in Nintendo. I might complain about Mario rehash after Mario rehash, but I'll eat that up over COD or Uncharted any day. Granted, I know The Last of Us and Uncharted are fantastic games, but they just don't strike a chord with me anymore. There's already so much violence in the world and thinking about killing people just really bums me out. So then the counter-argument people tell me is, "Yeah, well if you don't want a story, I guess you could play Nintendo games!" If I want something story driven I'll play Zelda or read a book.

Re: Hands On: The Wonderful 101

bahooney

@GamerJunkie I don't know if you know this, but a lot of adults have friends, too. I'm 23 and most of my friends have moved off to college. What do I do? Make new friends. I am constantly playing local multiplayer with my friends. Nintendo Land is a blast.

tldr; you're wrong.

@readyletsgo Let's see.... so, just for the last 20 hours, we have:

3D Adventure Title Dreamfall Chapters Under Consideration For Wii U
Sonic Lost World First Impressions

Ouya Heralds Emulation By Tweeting Image Of Super Mario Bros.
It's Time For Nintendo To Drop Region Locking

Woah! All that in less than a day, and it isn't Animal Crossing! Seriously, though I think you might be the only one on the planet who isn't totally invested in this wonderful gem of a game, try not to ruin the experience for everyone else. You are vastly outnumbered.

Re: Talking Point: It's Time for Nintendo to Drop Region Locking

bahooney

I'm studying Japanese, so the language barrier isn't quite the substantial problem it is for most non-natives. Granted, I play most of my Japanese games with a dictionary in my lap, but I've been able to get full enjoyment out of Doubutsu No Mori for N64. Heck, I imported Tomodachi Collection for the Nintendo DS, and was hoping to do the same for the 3DS iteration, but nope- Region Locked! Would love to see this dropped

Re: Animal Crossing: New Leaf Secures Second in the UK Charts, Again

bahooney

@S7eventhHeaven I'm pretty sure it's not as simple as totally shifting development from the 3DS iteration and plopping a ROM on the Wii U. If they were to take EVERYTHING: all the assets (probably thousands, including all the furniture, villagers, and objects, fish, bugs, fruit) and upscale them, it would take /sooooo/ much time. Would it sell Wii U units? Most likely. Are they developing a Wii U Animal Crossing? Without a doubt. However, this game needed to happen for the 3DS, it was promised to consumers three years ago, and literally /everyone/ would be angry if they decided to shift it to the Wii U. So don't worry. It's a fantastic little game that is just right for the 3DS. But in due time, you'll get your HD Animal Crossing.

Re: Bethesda Has No Current Plans For Wii U or Handhelds

bahooney

I really, really hate how Nintendo is somehow not included in the "all next-gen and current gen consoles." It's like, if you're in the industry, you know Nintendo exists. At this point, chances are it was Nintendo that got you interested in the industry in the first place. So why would you blatantly cross of Nintendo. I honestly don't get it.
