I think it might be better to market it as a handheld that can be played on your TV. As a console, it doesn't stack up against the other two. However, portability with 2.5 hours battery life is not a selling point for me. Mine will mostly be docked.
If there's an article for every game not on the Switch, we're going to need a bigger boat. Nintendo is just going to have to step it up. I personally haven't been happy with many of their first party releases lately. Some of these are farmed out, but they still put their stamp on them. These Mario Party games, Mario Olympics etc are tarnishing the Nintendo name. Quality has went down....just look at the average review score of recent Nintendo games. I'm sure somebody will say there's some media bias against Nintendo. It also baffles me as to why Nintendo can't have one of these Pokemon games ready. I don't play any of these Pokemon games but they would sell. The Switch is portable....why isn't there a Pokemon game that incorporates some Pokemon Go gameplay into a traditional Moon/Sun/Grass/Dirt whatever game. In fact, why aren't there games that have you go outside and farm materials or items to use in a normal style game? Nintendo can't compete with PS4 or Xbox at home. They need things that really sell the portability.
@Fuz Well Nintendo's focus on games at launch involves porting a WiiU game over to Switch...and that's about it. The next big game is another WiiU port (MK8). And then we get Splatoon 2.....which digital foundry says isn't a proper sequel at this point. Mario looks to be the first game built for Switch. Switch is all about portability. When docked, it's another WiiU situation.....some great first party titles but that's about it. So when they take that next plane trip, Netflix fans can't just take the Switch. They need to bring another device.
@Mario_Fart Haha..yeah. I'm still keeping my preorder for launch at this point. But I'm not excited anymore. I will play Zelda and then it will sit until Mario comes out. I want to play Zelda on my big screen, so my Switch will stay docked. Smart thing to do would be to buy the WiiU version of Zelda and wait to buy the Switch.
1-2 Switch is a tech demo that's not something you purchase.
Bomberman is way overpriced.
Mario Kart 8 is way overpriced ...it's the same game we already bought.
Zelda...which will be awesome...is a WiiU title.
Way to go Nintendo. I realize you have been cranking out the games for 3DS and WiiU.....oh wait.
Yes....the other systems have a huge advantage of being out for awhile. But these Nintendo games are competing with Zero Dawn, Resident Evil, South Park etc.
@ACrate81 I certainly don't want them to fail. I don't care if it's 299 or 249. My Switch was preordered immediately and if I only buy a few games for it, it's worth it to me. I want Nintendo to do very well so they increase employees and increase the number of games.
@ThanosReXXX The only comparison that matters is the day they are both sitting on the shelf. I'm not saying 299 is an unfair price. It's just not a competitive price for the current market. Usually the new models have superior technology. That's not the case with Switch. PS4 and XboxOne have the advantage of being out longer and able to make price cuts. But that's the market they have chosen to enter. And they are offering a machine that's not on the level as those 3 year old machines.
@TheGoof
I agree. If Nintendo wants to include some of these gimmicks, they need to show consumers that they are necessary for a better gaming experience. Nintendo complained companies didn't come up with good ways to use the gamepad for WiiU.....yet Nintendo failed to do the same with their own games. The portability and Nintendo first party titles are the reasons to buy Switch over the other consoles. Nintendo must hit a home run in both areas....and we've seen 2.5 battery life and very few titles.
@ThanosReXXX
Price comparisons are absolutely relevant. A consumer will walk into the store and see these systems side by side. They don't care what PS4 cost at it's launch. They care about today. Unless the consumer really cares about 2.5 hrs of portability, we are back to the WiiU situation (some great first party titles). The PS4 is more powerful, cheaper, many more games and better online (from what Nintendo communicated so far). Switch accessories are expensive. Nintendo chose when to release it's console. Nintendo refuses to take a loss on anything. If Zelda isn't your thing, could you really recommend Switch at launch? Or if they already have a WiiU, do they really need a Switch now?
So as an investor, would you put your money into Nintendo or something else? Nintendo's recent stock performance and the legitimate concerns over Switch would make any investor cautious. Switch needs to do very well to move the stock price up enough to make investment worth it. Stock price dropping doesn't mean investors think Nintendo is doomed. They just don't see a big increase in profits in the near future.
I'm buying Switch solely based on Nintendo exclusives. Portability is OK, but I'll mostly play at home. I took a short flight to Atlanta this weekend. If I started playing while waiting to board, the battery would die mid flight. It's just not worth my hauling around for that.
Well this is a great opportunity for some of you to use your money to invest. In order for people to invest, they have to be very confident Switch will be a very big success. If the Switch does ok or pretty good, their money would be better off in a different stock. The fact is, there are very legitimate concerns about Nintendo Switch. Concerns that Nintendo could have addressed but didn't.
@Emperor-Palpsy A few of those are benefits to nintendo. Why should I need to use my device because Nintendo won't build a machine that can handle that feature? Anybody who has a PS4 knows how easy the party chat works. When the Switch is docked, it's competition is PS4 and Xbox one.
@KingofSaiyanZ if you don't care about having 2.5 hrs of portability, then the only thing left is Nintendo exclusives. That's enough for most fans, but it won't compete with the other consoles. Gamers will remember that their wii and wiiu collected dust for many months waiting for the next big Nintendo title.
Do that many people download full games and not buy physical copy? 32gb should be ok for most. The memory will be on each cartridge you buy. I do agree though that the competition is offering more powerful consoles and 30x the memory for less money.
@BiasedSonyFan the new systems play games that old systems can't. Try porting witcher III to PS3. Its not just about the graphics. It's the worlds they are able to create.
With xbox and PS4, people pay for the latest tech. The switch is less powerful than consoles made years ago. We are paying for portability? That's limited to 2.5 hours.
I don't see this winning anybody over except Nintendo fans. Again, there aren't enough games. Launch so far isn't for anybody but Zelda fans. The price is a mistake. Nintendo should take a loss if they have to. Peripherals cost way too much. I'm buying it for the few AAA first party games. But I can't recommend the console to anybody who doesn't love Nintendo.
I'd like to see Nintendo show new inventive games. Lately they have been making HD versions of their franchises or remakes. Take franchises to the next level (I think Mario Kart 8 was the only game to do so in the WiiU generation). I don't want to see a bunch of WiiU games that I have to re-buy.
@jaymacx I'm not counting the Switch out. The portability is the key to it's success. Do people want to buy a lesser version of a game so that it's portable? Some certainly will. But would I buy a lesser port of Red Dead 2 just for it's portability? Probably not. Maybe I would for other games. Battery life will be key too. If I have to charge it every few hours, it's not really that portable for me.
@Dirty0814 We're talking console wars. PC is a completely different group. I said Nintendo will make great games...and they are exclusive. That is the reason I'm buying a Switch and any Nintendo console that comes out. But it does come to play when talking ports of 3rd party games....and all the other reasons listed above. My Wii and WiiU sat and collected dust in between the long waits for Nintendo's AAA titles.
@ducktrapper Absolutely. Nintendo will make great games with less power. 3rd party titles that benefit from portability will do fine. But....if it's a major 3rd party game that will mostly be played on your TV.....I will buy the best version. Most people will. And that won't be the Switch version. Try playing Destiny on PS3 vs PS4.
If it limits a game, then they matter. If they prevent certain companies from bringing games to the console, they matter. I remember having Twilight Princess and the 360 was new. It was jarring to go back to the Wii. I'm not saying there won't be great games on Switch. But it's always better to have the most advanced system. Who wants a phone with 5 year old technology? Why watch a DVD when you can watch a BluRay? Specs are very important. Are they everything? Of course not. But we can have both right?
I would have left Game of the Year for WiiU vacant in 2016. We're picking the best of what was released just to do it. But nothing is worth Game of the Year title.
@JaxonH I think $10 up front is great. I'd much rather have that instead of microtransactions. But you should get what you pay for, and this game fails on that level.
I can't recommend the game. It's your basic runner with a Mario theme. It's very short, and I don't really want to go back and play it. For 99 cents, I'd say pick it up if you're bored. But you're paying 8.99 for the Mario brand. I wouldn't have a problem paying $20 if it was worth it.
Best hardware?? I love Nintendo. But 3rd party developers do not put their titles on Nintendo consoles because they aren't powerful enough to handle it. When you buy a phone, do you buy 5 year old technology?
Why is 3rd Party a bad word? It would allow Nintendo to focus on making great games and not have to limit the game by their own system. Delays wouldn't matter because there would be plenty of 3rd party support. Why do people need to see "Nintendo" on the box they put their games into? I don't believe Nintendo can keep up with the other two in terms of technology.
I wish Nintendo had the most powerful console and was #1 on the market. It's OK to point out where Nintendo needs to improve. Just look at the scores of their games lately....way too many average games.
I really wish Nintendo would go 3rd party. I'd like to see them take advantage of the most powerful console. Their long droughts between titles are unacceptable for supporting a console that solely depends on first party titles. Why would anybody buy inferior ports?
I can't imagine just relying on a Nintendo console. After the last few generations, I expect a few must have titles..and that's it. All other games I buy will be on PS4 or Xbox One. Nintendo games used to set the standard. Mario Kart 8 was the only game last generation that was "next level" for me. Nintendo could have used the Metroid franchise to create it's own "Destiny" style game. Imagine creating your own bounty hunter. Taking down bosses in strikes with friends. Having social outposts to buy gear. Going on Raids with other bounty hunters to take down Ridley, Kraig and Mother Brain to get high end gear and power ups. But Nintendo would give some excuse as to why that wouldn't work (blame the internet, player interest etc).
Nice...we get to re-buy games we already bought. This has to be a partial list or it's not an accurate list. If it is true, it's not going to win many people over.

I love Nintendo, but I'm going to buy the best port of a game. And that's rarely on a Nintendo console. I'll get Switch, but my expectations are to have very few AAA titles on it. Nintendo has incredible quality....on a few rare releases.
People make excuses for Nintendo, and it allows them to continue to be left behind. As a long time Nintendo fan, I can no longer pick up a title just because it was made by Nintendo.

@MarcelRguez
Digital Foundry is Eurogamer.net. I'm not sure there's anybody who compares tech better than they do.
Re: Capcom Has No Plans To Infect The Nintendo Switch With Resident Evil "At The Moment"
I was never going to buy it for Switch. There's no way the Switch version would have been the best.
Re: Nintendo Switch Won't Have Video Streaming Services At Launch, But They're Being Considered

Right. I agree. If you can buy one game, are you going to buy 1-2 Switch or Zero Dawn? Bomberman or Resident Evil 7?

It's a business move. They will have another shortage of games, and this allows them to release another AAA title in a few months after Mario.
