Re: 'The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom' Launches In May 2023

TrixieSparkle

@sketchturner
Honestly, I'd feel more excited about this game if they stuck to the underground themes (or if they are part of the game in any meaningful way, put more emphasis on them). The floating islands and the techniques being showcased for navigating them over the past couple trailers look kind of tacky and out of place, in my opinion.

I wouldn't be surprised if parts of the development team feel similarly, which might be contributing to the several years of release delays for this game, as the director has been sticking to the sky idea but trying to make it more natural feeling and fun to navigate or something. Probably also why they released the HD version of Skyward Sword a while ago (wanting more practice in sky/island development concepts), while the much coveted Wind Waker and Twilight Princess ports are still nowhere to be seen.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Tricolor Turf War In Splatoon 3?

TrixieSparkle

At first I thought the mode seemed highly in favor of the 2 opposing teams, until I realized that the defending team only needs to have more ink than either of the opposing teams, not their combined amount. So, they can win with something as low as, say, around 30% or so. Especially if the opposing teams have no synergy and are covering each other's ink or splatting each other, since there is "friendly fire" (either accidentally or intentionally).

Re: Talking Point: Has Nintendo Done Enough To Justify Splatoon 3's Existence?

TrixieSparkle

@OFFICIALMichi
For what it's worth, apparently there are perks for Splatoon 2 players moving to Splatoon 3, including but not limited to starting at a higher rank based on your Splatoon 2 save data ranks, and having some modes unlocked immediately. So you aren't going to start from square one.

No idea why they chose not to mention that in the direct, but they mention it on the Splatoon website.

Re: Talking Point: Has Nintendo Done Enough To Justify Splatoon 3's Existence?

TrixieSparkle

The changes to the core gameplay and overall presentation are substantial enough that a significant overhaul to the game's engine would have been needed, and the game that was "updated" would cease to exist.

I much prefer this approach of releasing a separate entry, as anyone that favors one specific iteration can jump back in to experience it the way they preferred, if they feel the desire to do so (in this case, whether that is Splatoon 1 or Splatoon 2).

I've gotten invested into some other online-focused games in the past, where they changed the UI and presentation so much over the years it felt completely alien to me when I come back to re-visit them. Sometimes the fresh feeling is good, but other times...people miss the way it was enough to set up their own unofficial servers to bring the old versions back from the corporately-declared dead.

Re: Everything Announced In The Latest Splatoon 3 Trailer - New Weapons, Photo Mode, And 3-Player Turf Wars

TrixieSparkle

The Tableturf Battle was an interesting surprise. I'll definitely want to check that out!

Also, the new idols definitely have their own flair!

Would've been nice to get more details on the story mode, but it can be nice to go into that sort of thing more or less blind.

Also glad that the primary ability bonus of outfits can be changed, now. I definitely would've switched my fashion up more in Splatoon 2 if that had been a feature. Wish they would've also done the same with the weapons' specials/sub-items, though.

Kinda bummed they confirmed the limited mode rotations and having only 2 stages per rotation will continue to be a thing. I was hoping the third time around would finally correct this. And it would've been nice to get more new stages, rather than so many returning ones.

Also hoping the season pass-esque clothing catalog doesn't arbitrarily lock off existing things every 3 months. I like having options, and don't like feeling forced to play things at specific times in regular intervals.

Re: Poll: What Do You Want To See From This Week's Splatoon 3 Nintendo Direct?

TrixieSparkle

What I mostly want to see is some kind of confirmation that we'll have more control over what modes we want to play when we want to play them, and having access to more than two stages at a time for any given mode.

Played some Splatoon 2 earlier this week, and ended up playing the same stage 10 times in a row during one of the mode rotations, from the already limited selection of only 2 stages...

And I was trying to work towards bumping up a couple of my mode rankings back up to X before 3's release, only to close the game evening after evening because the mode I wanted to play wasn't active/available during the times I checked.

It would also be nice if we could just outright choose what specials and sub-items we wanted to use for any given weapon, rather than having so many of them set in stone.

Really, re-visiting Splatoon 2 has been killing my enthusiasm for playing Splatoon 3, so it would be nice to know they're aware of and trying to iron out the wrinkles in the sequel to get me hyped up for it. Feeling like I might just wait to see some raw gameplay footage from other people playing after release to see if it's worth it.

Re: YouTuber Ends Metroid Prime Music Covers After Nintendo's Lawyers Call

TrixieSparkle

You don't need to look far to see parody is 100% covered by fair use, and people doing so profit from it regularly on an international/global scale.

One of the more famous parody artists being Weird Al Yankovic, who has repeatedly stressed and reinforced in interviews that they are under zero legal obligations to license or receive permission from artists being parodied. They are a unique case in the parody world, as they voluntarily seek out permissions beforehand and share profits with the original artists regardless.

As it turns out, those parodies usually include a full recreation/cover of the songs in question.

If the only thing separating a "cover" from a "parody" is adding random obnoxious elements to the source material to cause them to be treated differently in a legal sense, it stands to reason this person just needs to throw in some nonsensical kazoos noises or haphazardly patch in some lyrics about how terrible he thinks Nintendo is or something, and the songs will suddenly be "okay". And that sounds ridiculous.

Re: Nintendo Says It Wants To Avoid A Repeat Of Wii U With Switch's Successor

TrixieSparkle

There was all manner of Wii accessories and games that followed the naming scheming of "Wii X", so it's not surprising so many people were confused by the Wii U being a new system. I mean, the Wii even had an accessory called the uDraw (note: starts with U) that, while a colossal commercial failure, stuffed many shelves.

I don't feel like there would have been any confusion among consumers if they had just called the Wii U "Wii 2".

Re: Nintendo Shares Advice For Those Suffering Switch Battery Issues

TrixieSparkle

I picked up the OLED a while ago and usually leave it docked, but I borrowed the charger for some other things for a day or so, and somehow the battery went totally kaput while in sleep mode starting from a full charge, despite having no games running or anything.

@Nintendo4Sonic
Some other people have also mentioned it, but picked up some interesting information while scouring the internet for potential causes. Apparently there's a bug right now where the Platinum Points Notifications setting being set to On (for absolutely any profile on the system, regardless of Nintendo Switch Online) puts a huge drain onto the battery for some reason. Changing that setting on all player profiles to Off seems to fix the issue for most people being affected.

Re: Pokémon Developer Game Freak Introduces Optional Four Day Working Week

TrixieSparkle

@Kiz3000
Speaking as someone who negotiated a 4 day work week within a company, but got stuck with the "10 hour days so it's still 40 hours" setup. I wish I could just work 4 days of 8 hours. I'd likely even be willing to take a pay cut to make it happen (salary based). Not like a 32 hour work week wouldn't still legally qualify as full time, both federally and regionally (where I live, anyway). Not sure why so many companies have to be so hung up on keeping people either working forever, or working so little they can be legally re-classified as "part-time" (and by extension, have all benefits cut). There should be a middle ground.

From my perspective, what Game Freak is offering here is actually an ideal arrangement, especially as an optional one.

Re: Nintendo Wants To Know What Switch "Groups" You've Created Since The Latest Firmware Update

TrixieSparkle

@BenAV

One of the biggest use cases of classifying things by genre/purpose, other than ensuring games don't become forgotten and being able to do simple compare/contrasts for things like which RPG out of several dozen you feel like investing time into on any given day, is quickly presenting the information to other people.

Simple example is having some friends over, and wanting to play a multiplayer game. How does one ensure that the friend knows what multiplayer games are available, without lengthy verbal explanations or verbal checklists (aka groups, only messier and harder to keep track of) that could take several hours to sift through? Game titles and image icons are not very useful for such matters. Especially so for games that are primarily single player, but have good multiplayer modes.

Chances are they'll just default to a "safe" option like Mario Kart 8 or Super Smash Brothers or something that has big brand recognition they immediately recognize or assume you have in an effort to save time, abandoning the idea of even trying to figure out what games you actually have available. The larger the collection, the more prominent the issue.

Re: Nintendo Wants To Know What Switch "Groups" You've Created Since The Latest Firmware Update

TrixieSparkle

These are the groups I made so far. More or less mirrored the categorization I use for my Steam library, with some exceptions:

-Physical
-Digital
-Multiplayer
-Virtual Console
-2D Platformer
-3D Platformer
-Adventure (as in, point-and-click)
-Arcade
-Bullet Hell
-Demo
-Dungeon Crawler
-Fighter
-Fitness
-Open World
-Puzzle
-Racing
-Rhythm
-RPG
-Shooter
-Software
-Strategy
-Visual Novel
-World Builder

It took a couple hours to sift through the several hundred games and get them all sorted with the tagging, but it'll be nice to finally be able to go "I'm in the mood to play X type of game", and actually be able to figure out my options in seconds instead of potentially hours of aimless searching.

Re: Crunchyroll Moves All Funimation Content Under One Banner

TrixieSparkle

I'm mostly curious if they'll work out how to handle merging content from a Funimation account into an already existing Crunchyroll account by the time all the details of the merge are worked out and finalized.

I'm currently actively subscribed to Crunchyroll and have queues and bookmarks, and ideally I would want to be pulling all my owned digital licenses from my Funimation account into the other. Worst case scenario I think I'll just need to abandon my existing Crunchyroll account and create/use a Funimation-based migration account instead, as I don't want those licenses to fall into the ether. It's currently not clear if merging the two accounts together will be possible (or when the digital libraries will be moved off Funimation and accessible in Crunchyroll, although apparently they are aware of and working on that issue).

Re: Retro-Bit's GameCube Component Cable Will Save You Some Pennies

TrixieSparkle

@dcast2

For some people, it's wanting access to the Gameboy Player attachment.

Also, similarly to the small hardware differences between the PS2 fat vs. slim, and the various Xbox 360 revisions causing problems with certain games: even though it is technically not emulation, playing Gamecube games on the Wii seems to occasionally introduce bugs that don't exist otherwise.

One that I personally encounter is Gohma in Wind Waker never stops swinging their claws to leave an opening for some reason (doesn't make it impossible to finish the fight by any means, just a minor inconvenience). Another one of my friends once told me they encountered a strange bug fighting Ridley in Metroid Prime. One of Ridley's attacks where they are invulnerable was never ending, thereby making him impossible to defeat. They tried resetting the console multiple times and starting from their earlier save to fix it, to no avail. Which prompted them to only use the Gamecube from then on for their Gamecube games (where they have never encountered said issue).

I still prefer to play on the Wii, though. One less thing to hook up to the TV, and one less thing to maintain.

Re: PSA: Get All The Harvest Moon Games Before The 3DS And Wii U eShops Close

TrixieSparkle

Harvest Moon 64 is a must-play for any fan of the series. I'd highly recommend it!

Probably still my favorite one, although the PS1 version of Friends of Mineral Town (and the Switch remake of that) come close. Always got really weird "alternate reality" vibes jumping between the two, though, since they have mostly the same cast of characters, but have largely different roles and personalities.

Re: Crunchyroll Is Now Available On Switch

TrixieSparkle

Huh. Neat!

I'd started my subscription up again a few days ago after letting it be inactive for a few years to catch up on a few things that got some new seasons (Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, Non Non Biyori, etc.)

@Browny

I don't recall that being an issue with Crunchyroll app on any platform, but the Funimation app on the Switch is definitely locked down to being premium users only (which is super annoying, on account of I own multiple full seasons of anime via codes from Blu-Rays/DVD's on my account, but am not allowed to stream this owned content pretty much anywhere other than desktop browsers).

Re: The Risqué 'Duel Princess' Returns To PC Following Switch And Steam Delisting

TrixieSparkle

Had bought it day one on the US eShop, had a good time. There were some typos in the English script and UI here and there, but chances are they'd already re-assessed their budget a couple weeks before release following the Steam fiasco, so I'll let it slide.

Not entirely accurate to say it was de-listed from Steam. Similarly to the fate of many visual novels and games as of late with distinctly non-western art styles, it got yanked by a Steam employee before it was even officially released, leaving the publishers to need to change their plan on what to do with their completed game. That's why I chose to support it sooner rather than later on the Switch, I hate it when developers making games I enjoy just suddenly get screwed over like that.

And despite selling well, topping charts, and people clearly wanting to play/purchase it (a.k.a. buyer's market), it got pulled from the Switch too? Figures. Hopefully it does, in fact, return for others to enjoy on the Switch, and without being butchered in some way. And I hope more people start considering the non-Steam storefronts. Competition is good for everyone.

Re: Poll: The End Is Coming, But How Much Will You Miss The Wii U And 3DS eShop?

TrixieSparkle

I dumped quite a bit of money into the 3DS and Wii U libraries within the past 3 months.

This past December I picked up all the virtual console Pokemon games on the 3DS, for starters. With the intention of potentially playing with and trading with others, but that'll be a bit difficult if they can't also buy the games.

Also, I picked up Pokemon Ultra Sun digitally because the secondhand physical prices for picking up that game are kind of ridiculous. I'm sure many people/games are in a similar situation, even before this closure drives prices up further.

I also filled some holes in my N64 virtual console library (such as Donkey Kong 64) after being let down by how NSO is being handled.

I also picked up some physical Wii U games recently, such as Xenoblade Chronicles X. Not sure if it has DLC it needs, but at the very least the idea that being unable to download game patches might not be far behind this decision creates an uncomfortable situation.

Also.

I've also been studying Japanese, and the 3DS is a great place to get practical experience thanks to most 1st and 2nd party games supporting furigana. Again, within the past 1-2 years I picked up quite a few titles, but I'm still learning so I'm sure there are more Japan-exclusive titles I'd be wanting to try out sooner or later. Most of them digitally, since prices for physical imports have been kind of ridiculous for a while now (due to shipping costs, if for no other reason).

I'm feeling burned in all sorts of ways right now.

I haven't modded any consoles since the Wii/PSP era, although I'm sure PC emulators will be capable of filling the holes (especially with Steam Decks finally reaching the wild). I just wish that emulators weren't the only practical option, especially since it kills a lot of the community aspect of games.

Re: Nintendo Dominates Amazon's Best Sellers Of 2021 Gaming List

TrixieSparkle

@Gwynbleidd

Just to explain on their behalf, people hacking accounts of various storefronts to buy a bunch of digital game codes or gift cards that need to be redeemed elsewhere is a common issue for any website where somebody can store payment details (sometimes for personal use, but more often than not these codes will be flipped on eBay/gift card exchange sites/etc. for a quick buck that will be much harder to track back to them). Digital goods can be shifted on aftermarkets much more effectively before relevant parties are notified something is wrong, compared to physical items which need to be shipped.

It's usually why most sites will require people to re-enter their full credit card number (even if it's stored), send additional confirmation emails, or something similar when buying digital codes. An extra layer of security compared to placing orders which will be shipped.

Re: Talking Point: What's Your Favourite New Feature In Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2.0 And The Happy Home DLC?

TrixieSparkle

I started the game over from scratch with some other people so I haven't reached/unlocked a good chunk of the update features yet, but I've been enjoying the addition of permanent ladders, being able to store duplicate DIY recipes in storage, the larger variety of furniture, and a few other things.

And I'm glad I picked up the Happy Home Paradise DLC, been having a great time with it! (and the extra home customization options that come with it)

Looking forward to trying out...pretty much everything I still need to unlock (the boat tours, the Roost, gyroids, etc.)

Both the update and the DLC gave the game a great breath of fresh air! I've been having a much more enjoyable time in this second run than my old town from last year.

Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Final Fighter Is... Kingdom Hearts' Sora!

TrixieSparkle

Setting aside issues with present-day Disney as well as the fact this character's release is being used as a shameless marketing tool for several different games (Cloud gaming streaming service announcement and Smash DLC bonus for save data from a game that has zero ties to Smash or Nintendo, really?).

Will the addition of yet another long-ranged, weapon-protected, counter-protected character, actually benefit the roster in terms of the game being fun for anyone not playing as Sora? Who then also, by design, appears to have more broken aerial capabilities than Smash 4 Bayonetta?

As a side note for anyone who does not understand why the constant inclusion of sword and sword-like characters is so disliked by so many players. What makes weapon-armed characters particularly annoying to deal with in Smash is the weapons have no hitbox to damage the characters in question. In short, it's an infinite use zoning/meat-shield tool. At best, you can interrupt the attack. Everybody loves playing against campers, right?

Also, the main significance of characters with ridiculous aerial not working well in terms of Smash mechanics, is both getting combo'd off the top of the stage at very low damage percentages (possibly from one combo starting at 0%), and being unable to knock the characters off a ledge, is pretty annoying.

On a personal note, I find it super weird that they didn't choose literally ANY first-party Nintendo character as the sending off.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Yesterday's Nintendo Direct?

TrixieSparkle

Every new-ish announcement I theoretically cared about had a sting in the tail.

We're finally expanding the NSO offerings! ...for an increased premium price. Also, we're padding the numbers to justify the price by including SEGA games that can already easily be purchased separately. Also, the release schedule for most of the included games is going to be drip-fed in unspecified intervals. Please be excited.

Some classic Zelda titles are finally coming to Switch, and even Banjo Kazooie! ...you can't buy these in a collection or anything, though, only rent them. Also, no time specified for when they'll be available for renting.

We have Smash news! ...Later
We have ACNL news! ...Later

Re: Hardware Review: Can You Really "Make Your Own Switch Pro" With This $100 Dongle?

TrixieSparkle

I have nothing but positive things to say about the performance of the mClassic! I've had it for about a year now. I feed my whole setup through it via an HDMI switch. It really works wonders on smoothing out jagged edges. I even plug it into the HDMI feed of my PSVR headset, when I'm using that.

It also plays very nicely when paired up with the RetroTink 2X Pro for going above and beyond in cleaning up the images of sub-480p composite/component devices for modern sets.

Re: Nintendo And Lunchables Are Giving Away Nintendo Switch Prize Packs (US)

TrixieSparkle

Contests like these are always weird, because (in the U.S. at least, aka contests like this one) they're legally required to allow free, non-purchase raffle entries to skate around gambling laws (the ways to obtain the free codes clearly outlined on the contest site, as it usually will be).

So you're competing just as much, if not more, against the hordes of coupon clippers and bots than the people actually putting in codes from the boxes.

I won't say no one ever wins these sorts of things, though. One of my relatives once won a chain restaurant promotion for a free Playstation VR headset for entering codes on the food receipt (they didn't have a PS4 at the time, so that actually prompted them to get one so they could use their prize).

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting A Switch OLED Or Valve Steam Deck?

TrixieSparkle

Told a few people IRL about the Steam Deck today; several of them put in a reserve deposit in direct response to said information, while others are now cautiously optimistic and awaiting reviews/demonstration. It's kind of impressive how much hype this thing's announcement has managed to stir up.

I've decided to commit instead of observe, and put in a deposit. Going for the "bells and whistles" version, because why not. This seems much more in line with what I had wanted the original GPD Win to be when I'd picked it up a couple years ago (a direct portable PC equivalent of the Switch), so I want it to succeed. Hopefully it won't disappoint.

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting A Switch OLED Or Valve Steam Deck?

TrixieSparkle

I definitely have my eyes on the Steam Deck. I have a 1st generation GPD Win that I got at a decent price, but find its hardware, firmware, and build quality lacking. They've released better built and beefier models, but dropping $800-$1500 on the newer ones is really hard to justify as a replacement secondary gaming computer (I have a VR-capable gaming laptop). Plus it was annoying that it had Windows 10 Home on it by default (it's more or less impossible to turn off many of Windows 10's "features" without being on Pro).

The Steam Deck's entry price is low enough that I could give it a try; not like I'd need to buy games for it on top of that, my PC library is already huge. And something intended to support a Linux OS rather than Windows right out of the box appeals to me, as I'd like to dabble some more in using Linux. I also like the overall form factor. I imagine it will also have much better community support than the GPD lines for compatibility and optimizing settings and such, with the force of a company like Steam behind it.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of Nintendo Direct At E3 2021?

TrixieSparkle

Nothing really wowed me in the Nintendo Direct, but there were certainly titles I plan to pick up.

WarioWare: Get It Together, Mario Party Superstars, and Cruis'n Blast were the notable highlights for me.

Was hoping for more announcements of new games, rather than ports, remasters, DLC, and previews/footage of things we already knew about. Some of the dates of said things are still surprisingly far off, apparently.

But, there's still plenty of already announced upcoming games that weren't mentioned in the Direct heading their way to the Switch this year. So it's all good, I guess.

Re: Roundup: Here's What Was Revealed In Nintendo Direct E3 2021

TrixieSparkle

I'm pretty burned out on wasting money for inevitably neglected ports/remasters/years-after-release-DLC of games I've either already played before or was not interested in the first time around, so not much for me in the presentation.

The new WarioWare did look fun, though, and I'm sure I can rope some people into playing the Mario Party compilation. Will almost certainly pick up both. Might check out Cruis'n Blast, also.

Not like I'm hurting for upcoming Switch games this year, anyway. Between Disgaea 6, the previously un-localised Akiba's Trip and Phoenix Wright games, and the new World Ends With You game all coming out within the next few days/months, I've got more than enough to keep me busy (on top of the already existing backlog, of course).

Re: "Nintendo Switch Has Games" - And Now It Has An Expensive Calculator, Too

TrixieSparkle

I remember when I had a homebrewed PSP with a scientific graphing calculator application on it. The teachers couldn't think of a concrete reason to disallow it (especially when faced with the "People play things like tetris/doom on their normal graphing calculators all the time, what's the difference?") so that was pretty nice (especially since the calculators used to cost, like, $150 for a "real" one, so good money savings).

Something people need to remember is a lot of the time, phones are explicitly banned for classroom use in high school/college, regardless of what apps are on it, due to the internet access/messaging/etc.

Re: Random: This Unused DS Lite Feature Would've Effectively Turned The Console Into A Switch

TrixieSparkle

The Playstation Vita had planned functionality even closer to the Switch than the functional PSP feature, in terms of function and capabilities. The feature was removed more or less at the last second of development so they could sell the Playstation TV as a separate device. As evidence of exactly how "last second" they were in removing the feature, the port on the top of the Vita, originally intended for the HDMI output, has no hardware attached to the motherboard and is effectively purely cosmetic.

Re: The Legend Of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD Will Feature amiibo Support, File Size Revealed

TrixieSparkle

My most notable memories of the "Skyward Sword experience":

-Frustration with the constant Fi explanation/item description interruptions
-All the map worlds outside of the hub town feeling like incredibly linear dungeons
-Awkwardly needing to re-re-fight the Imprisoned 3 separate times in slightly different ways less than 30 minutes apart near the end of the game due to having not regularly re-visited the temple for no reason (and on that note, annoyance of recycling boss fights)
-Collectathons needlessly padding out the game length at the last second completely breaking any remaining end-game momentum the game might have otherwise had.
-Being relieved I managed to miss activating an extremely easy to invoke game breaking bug that affected many others (one severe enough they had to invent a way to patch games and game saves on the Wii).

I actually didn't mind the motion controls, on paper. Although the battles felt really awkwardly paced due to all the "enemies standing there waiting for you to slash in a specific direction" nonsense.

My positive highlight for the game is that the town of Skyloft was fun to explore.

Re: Soapbox: Grinding Is Poor Gameplay Design That Doesn’t Respect Your Time

TrixieSparkle

To be fair, a lot of games that have the "ability" to grind only require it if the person playing has no grasp on the mechanics of the game, or has done nothing to explore or understand the world.

One of my more memorable moments of years gone by is when somebody I knew was trying out Final Fantasy VII and was apparently having a great deal of difficulty for some reason on relatively early game main story bosses and getting frustrated. When I looked at the current state of their save file to see what was up, he had not once purchased or changed any materia for the character equipment, and his inventory was basically non-existent. So they were literally just mashing the attack button, not strategizing, grinding experience points as their only method of advancing and ignoring everything else, and I could tell at a glance they hadn't done much exploring beyond trying to run to main story checkpoints based on their inventory and available equipment. Yeah, trying to play the game that way wouldn't be fun or practical.

Re: Soapbox: Video Game Injuries Are No Laughing Matter

TrixieSparkle

For anyone stuck at a desk job but also plays a lot of games, here's one of my best life hacks to keep the wrists and trigger fingers healthy:

Rotate the hand you use for the computer mouse. At work I use my left hand, when I'm off the clock I switch to the right hand. I have a pile of one specific model of mouse with programmable keys that nicely accommodates both left and right-handed use so the switch doesn't feel awkward (Logitech G300).

There's also the ergonomic keyboards and posture and wrist support mouse pads and such, which are also worth investing in, but switching hands for the mouse seems to be something that isn't often considered.

Re: Spelunky 1 And 2 Are Both Coming To Nintendo Switch

TrixieSparkle

@Abeedo
From what I've read up on in user reviews about the second one, the general consensus among both newcomers and veterans to the series is that the first Spelunky is both the better starting point for newcomers, and just an overall better designed game.

I haven't personally played the second one, but I can whole-heartedly recommend the first one in both its HD and non-HD iterations.

Re: Review: Super Mario Bros. 35 - A Six-Month Jolt Of Life For An Iconic Classic

TrixieSparkle

I tried a few matches. One of them was dragging on for so long I offed myself just to get it over with, as neither I or the other remaining player was in any real danger of having the timer run out any time soon even after it sped up, and the increased mob sizes only helped further boost the remaining time to comfortable levels rather than pose a threat.

I feel like a good balance change to speed things up would be not to reward timer time for defeating the additional enemies sent by other players, only the "real" enemies.

Re: Super Mario 3D All-Stars Lands On Switch On 18th September, And It's A Limited-Time Thing

TrixieSparkle

I've wanted a proper re-release of Sunshine for ages, so there was no hesitation from me to pick this up.

Not too keen on the limited time window thing, though. It might not affect me personally, but now there's a chance lots of people I know that would definitely be interested will potentially miss the release window based solely on the fact they don't follow gaming news like a hawk.

Re: Angry Players Are Starting To Review-Bomb Animal Crossing: New Horizons

TrixieSparkle

The sharing an island isn't the main problem for most people. It's the whole "everyone other than the first one to play on the island is treated as a second class citizen and doesn't get to play the same game" thing. This wasn't the case for, say, the Gamecube version, for people living in the same town.

Although speaking as someone not sharing a console, I have my beefs with the game too, compared to other installments. My first impression is it's everything I disliked about New Leaf (significantly limited villager interactions, aka basically no errands/chores) and everything I disliked about Pocket Camp (mobile grind micro-goals being a primary currency) under the same roof. And needing to run back and forth to constantly replace the broken fishing rods and nets is annoying, which is a whole new problem. You can make sturdier ones later, but if you want to hit all the micro goals you pretty much HAVE to use the easily breakable ones. And when I saw the initial layout of the town, I had some specific areas in mind for where to put things, but you're locked to about 1/4 of the map at the beginning and need to build everything in that tiny spot (being able to change the layout "later" doesn't really make it okay). And the game both tells you how and actively encourages you to break rocks at the beginning, failing to mention they re-spawn really, really slowly if you weren't planning to time travel (which is a major issue on account of them being a primary source of materials for "tapping" them). Just to name a few.

Re: Splatoon 2 High-Quality Poster Set Back In Stock On My Nintendo (Europe)

TrixieSparkle

@Liam_Doolan

There's also some Splatoon 2 gear available to redeem for 100 platinum points, located in the bizarrely still unnamed "3DS/Wii U software/digital content", despite being a redemption code for the Switch eShop. I'm fairly certain this is the first time Switch content has been available from My Nintendo for coins (other than the converting gold coins directly to cash), so it's very noteworthy!

This is on the U.S. version of My Nintendo, I don't know about the others.

Re: Hori Announces New Line Of Officially Licensed Accessories For Switch Lite

TrixieSparkle

@Razieluigi

There are two big differences between plastic vs. glass when it comes to screen protectors.

The one people will likely notice first is the feel. Glass screens are consistently easier to "glide" across when in the context of a touch screen interface, both resistive and capacitive, stylus or no stylus. Plastic has a tendency to stick, which in turn makes people press down harder to compensate, which in turn increases the likelihood of the sensitivity of the screen underneath becoming damaged. A big deal for rhythm games or people who draw art.

The second is scuffs/scratches. Not once have I needed to replace a tempered glass protector on any device for scratches, whereas the plastic ones were usually looking worn within a year or two easily. I can't stand scratches, for me it's on the same level as dead pixels for how distracting it can be.

And make no mistake, a good tempered glass protector can save a device. I once had a phone take a bad tumble onto some concrete, and it cracked up the screen protector pretty badly. But the underlying screen was completely undamaged, so the phone was both saved, and still looked great after taking that off and popping on a spare.
