Re: Super Castlevania IV Is Coming To The North American Wii U eShop In Time For Halloween

StarBoy91

I'm of the opinion that Akumajou Dracula X: Chi no Rondo is a lot superior to Super Castlevania IV, but to each their own.

@Zeldalover - if any boss was a joke in the latter, I think it would the dancing spectres (but to each their own). Just saying that should give an idea of how inane that is and it's actually an embarrassing choice for a boss fight in retrospect (I won't get into the names either). You have to admit though, it did have some cool original boss designs; such as the Zapf bat in Dracula's treasury.

Re: Super Castlevania IV Is Coming To The North American Wii U eShop In Time For Halloween

StarBoy91

That's good tidings indeed. I already have it on the Wii Virtual Console (though I should probably consider importing the SFC original Akumajo Dracula to experience how it was originally presented before it got localized), but I'm glad to hear that it's coming on the Wii U VC.

While I don't consider it a flawless game (imo it's a smidge overrated), I do think it's very solid entertainment and the music rocks! The gameplay is good, the visuals are great for a Generation One SNES game, and I like how there is a slightly more difficult second quest to play after you beat it the first time (unfortunately not many people are aware of it, since Konami thought it was such a good idea to just let it start after you press a button at the end of the credits, in which case most presume that it's just over when they see the final message; but that's just my personal observation talking, this is not meant to come across as rude); even though it's easier, the first quest is a lot better than the second quest. I have a few personal qualms with it, but I'll refrain from stating what they are right now; regardless, I think this game is very good in its own right. I think it's great that Super Castlevania IV is getting released just in time for Halloween; it's rather fitting considering its dark tone, the plethora of monsters that you fight on your way, and of course, Dracula.

Re: Review: Final Fight 3 (Wii U eShop / Super Nintendo)

StarBoy91

Yeah, I'm with ogo79 on this one: as far as female beat'em up protagonists go, you simply can't beat Blaze Fielding... who should've been called Argent Shining in Streets of Rage 3 due to the outfit change (and yet the Japanese Bare Knuckle 3 retained her red outfit). I never did understand Sega's reasoning for that alteration. =/

@MrHeli - I'm more into getting games in physical format myself, and I have contemplated coming back to the VC, I have... it's just that the connection wasn't working anymore for the Wii at the time and I had forgotten the access code to it.

Re: Review: Final Fight 3 (Wii U eShop / Super Nintendo)

StarBoy91

Good review, Damo.

Final Fight 3 is the only game in the trilogy I haven't yet played, and while I am curious to play it, I am rather hesitant about it (mostly due the fact that Final Fight 2 made me a little weary of the series, what with its plodding length and the fact that its gameplay was virtually identical to the first game's). I do wish to play it one day, I do, but the price tag is rather hefty (especially the Japanese version Final Fight Tough; I haven't touched the Virtual Console service in years). I do keep hearing that it's the better game of the trilogy and that's it more fresh and has got lots of replay value going for it. But so long as it doesn't threaten to give me arthritis or carpal tunnel like Final Fight 2 does (due the two-finger tactic I described in the comments section for that game's review; just to clarify, that's the only beat'em up I ever use that tactic for), I'm all for it!

Until then, there's always the original Final Fight on Capcom Classics Collection Remixed or the Streets of Rage trilogy to tide me over (but mostly 2 and 3).

"Mike Haggar's aforementioned hairstyle is made all the more ridiculous by his skin-tight shorts and biker boot combo — a sure sign of a man going through a particularly bad mid-life crisis." LOL

Re: Review: Final Fight 2 (Wii U eShop / Super Nintendo)

StarBoy91

Oh, for those that are having trouble with Final Fight 2 and want to make the experience a little easier:
Punch -> Punch -> Punch -> Reverse Punch -> Punch -> Punch -> Punch -> - Reverse Punch -> Rinse and Repeat
You're welcome!

This technique will save you and make you lose less lives and continues (since the opposition won't be attacking you while you do this), however you must be as quick as you can with two fingers clasped together tapping it as opposed to using one thumb (it's not entirely a foolproof process since you must time it exactly right in order for it to work). Don't complete the combo unless the enemy you're facing is easy or unless the boss or enemy is low on health. Unfortunately, this technique of mine threatens to give my hand carpal tunnel or arthritis, and that's why I don't like this beat'em up as much as others. The things I do as a completionist (I've beaten all four difficulty modes with Haggar and Maki, with the exception of Carlos for which I've yet to beat the remaining two difficulty settings for him)... sigh

Re: Review: Final Fight 2 (Wii U eShop / Super Nintendo)

StarBoy91

Well this review turned up quicker than I thought it would!

I agree, Final Fight 2 is most definitely not as good as the original. The pacing was painfully slow (it takes a full hour to beat; if a beat'em up is going to be this long, it had better have elements that make it flesh out, which was not the case here; blame it also on the fact that later on are enemies that take way too much damage to defeat, not to mention only three enemies can be fought on screen), the music is largely uninspired (save for the ending, which I thought was the only good song in the package), the final boss is a joke, the controls are pretty much the same as the original, there isn't as much fun to be had here, and it's basically Final Fight 11/2! I will give it this though: the visuals are still fantastic, the cameos by Chun-Li and Guile (and Zangief to a lesser extent) are clever, and the fact that the full ending can be viewed after having beaten it on the hardest difficulty setting (which is possible) does give it some replay value. Too bad it had to be for a beat'em up that was, in my opinion, too damn long for its own good! If anyone liked the game, that's great; to each their own, this game just personally did not work for me all that well. If anything, I found the first Streets of Rage (which has not aged well, imo, but I find decent at best) to be more enjoyable and superior to Final Fight 2. I've yet to play Final Fight 3, which I often hear is the best in the series (and I'm truly curious about it), but atm I'm a little weary of Final Fight after having played the second one.

I played the Japanese version for the Super Famicom (for purism reasons among other things), which includes the first boss with the meat clever and the female ninja enemies. There's some blood after a character or enemy gets hit with a knife, though I sincerely doubt they kept that for the localized version. Out of all the Super Famicom imports I made in the past year and a half, this one is my least favorite.

Another good review, Damo! I think a 5 for this game is fair (a 6 would be too, but 5 works). I look forward to reading your Final Fight 3 review.

Re: Review: Final Fight (Wii U eShop / Super Nintendo)

StarBoy91

I've only ever played the original arcade version of Final Fight on Capcom Classics Collection Remixed for the PSP so I can't comment on the SNES version (though a part of me does wish to try it even though I already have the arcade original on said compilation), and while it's no masterpiece by any means (imo), I do find it decent to play once in a while; though to be honest, I largely prefer the Streets of Rage beat'em up trilogy to Final Fight (I've only played the first two FF games; the third game I haven't experienced yet). One thing is for certain though: I do find the original to be slightly superior to its sequel Final Fight 2 on the SFC (yes, I imported this one), which felt more to me like Final Fight 11/2 (not exactly Capcom's highest point).

Good read, Damo! Well-versed!

Re: Classic SNES RPG Breath Of Fire II Is Coming To The North American Wii U Virtual Console

StarBoy91

@retro_player_22 - Both Breath of Fire titles were published by Capcom... in Japan, that is (and when it came to the Game Boy Advance). The reason the first Breath of Fire for SNES hasn't been available on the Virtual Console is a little complicated than that. It was the first RPG Capcom ever made, which meant that it was word-driven; only problem was, at that point they didn't have enough resources to have it translated themselves, so they had to appoint the help of Ted Woolsey, who by the time that game was made had already done a great job translating RPGs. Thing is, Ted Woolsey was a SquareSoft employee at the time, so as a result the first Breath of Fire was published in the US by SquareSoft, and that in a nutshell is why Capcom RPG #1 has never been released for the Virtual Console downloadable services in the West. That, and they bout about who has the rights to the first game. Shame.
@Henmii - Breath of Fire II was released on the Wii Virtual Console before, so it's not the first time that it's available in a downloadable service.

Re: Phineas And Ferb: Quest for Cool Stuff Begins on 13th August

StarBoy91

I certainly hope this one will be better than the Nintendo DS video game adaptation of Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension (which I thought was just okay; but oh so redundant and needed a lot of polish), but still this sounds exciting. I love Phineas and Ferb; it's my second favorite animated Disney show after The Weekenders!

Re: First Impressions: Yoshi's New Island

StarBoy91

Well, I'm still hopeful that this continuation to the first game will be very good unlike the last continuation to the first game Yoshi's Island DS which I honestly thought was just barely good by itself (it's still a bad sequel, though); the original Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island just rocks in my opinion!

Re: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2 Will Run At 60FPS

StarBoy91

A Link to the Past 2? Really? Don't get me wrong, I'm more than excited to hear more news regarding this 3DS follow-up to a great SNES game, and I cannot wait to play it when it comes out. But seriously, isn't calling it The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past 2 kind of border-on pushing it or a moot point? Then again, Nintendo had no problem calling the 3DS iteration of New Super Mario Bros. the title New Super Mario Bros. 2 (even though there was another one for the Wii years prior), so who am I to talk? I hope they don't stick with that name.

Re: Violent Video Games Blamed for Knife Attack in Scotland

StarBoy91

13 and a father? Who did he marry at such a young age? That just sounds sick! (emoticon used to represent disgust and not for the usual reason)
Oh, and I agree, it's pretty sad what happened there. It's easy to see why violent video games are to blame (and the fact that there are some people that do not recognize the difference between fiction and reality, but never mind that), but it's really the parents that should be held responsible.

Re: Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse Looks Set For Wii U

StarBoy91

Ah, Mickey Mouse's first MegaDrive/Genesis game, Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse is a very fun game, and one of my top favorite Disney games starring Disney's mouse (alongside The Great Circus Mystery starring Mickey & Minnie and Mickey & Donald: Magical Adventure 3) I like that new cover

Re: All New DuckTales is Coming to Wii U

StarBoy91

"It will never leave, it will never leave!!"

Seriously, though, that trailer looked fantastic! Almost makes me want to buy a Wii U (maybe in a few months but not right now); I really enjoyed the original game and the show that it's based on

Re: Review: Wrecking Crew (3DS eShop / NES)

StarBoy91

@Nibelilt - thank you for preserving the movie's aspect ratio (2.39:1)! If the movie ever gets shown on TV outside of Blu-Ray and DVD, I really hope they do not resort to pan-and-scan like they do tons of other really widescreen movies that are shown on TV, 'cause I really hate that!! Who gives a damn about borders so long as you're watching the movie the director intended to show it to the audience?!
If they do resort to pan-and-scan (in which case they have no respect for the director's vision whatsoever), I'll always have the Blu-Ray and/or DVD to watch at home. Of course, this is just a pet peeve of mine.

Re: Rayman Legends No Longer a Wii U Exclusive, Delayed to September

StarBoy91

But seriously though, I'm not that bothered by that; I'm sure it might enjoy equal success in various consoles. I do feel bad that the game won't be around for another seven months now. I really enjoyed Rayman Origins on the PlayStation 3 when I played it with my cousin, and I hope the sequel is good (even though I won't be getting a Wii U for awhile now).

Re: Review: Super C (3DS eShop / NES)

StarBoy91

^ I was speaking in a joking tone at that point and was making a subtle parody/reference to a certain online reviewer (NC). I guess what caught my attention was the way the word was used, it almost sounded like that one inappropriate four-letter word (I never heard of that band, though). I was kidding, a little, but also showed my initial reaction in that post. This isn't something I would lose sleep over; my initial reaction was surprised that's all. That comment before was meant to be a joke, and it wasn't my intention to have it be taken seriously (this is what happens when the internet doesn't have facial and sound cues).

Re: Review: Super C (3DS eShop / NES)

StarBoy91

...and the award for most controversial tagline in a family-friendly website goes to: points to this review that!!!

But looking past that, I am very curious about this game and I really should get it some time (not sure why I haven't thought of buying it before, seeing as I heard super great things about it for years)! I really enjoyed Contra III: The Alien Wars, so I'm hoping Super C will be a good time as well!

Re: New Sonic Fan Film Receives Mixed Reception, But At Least Yuji Naka Likes It

StarBoy91

Oh, my God, that really was Doug Walker that I spotted early in the video! Awesome!!!
Neat cameo
Also sweet, a letterbox widescreen format! I'm not certain if it's a 2.35:1, 2.39:1, or 2.40:1 aspect ratio but who cares, I'm all for watching things in widescreen!
As for the video, it's cool. It's certainly interesting, even though I couldn't help but be reminded of The Hunger Games near the end (maybe it's the similar exposition deep inside the forest and one moment where it was going through shaky-cam?). Acting was so-so, but Sonic looked cool, and Robotnik was menacing, plus the music was great. I liked it!
