When you set out to make a film about a character as beloved as Sonic the Hedgehog, there's little room for error. Sonic fans are notoriously picky and will jump on the smallest mistake, regardless of how hard you work.
That's ultimately what has happened to Blue Core Studios, a video production team which has created a 18 minute, 31 second short which focuses on humanity's struggle against Robotnik - with the help of a certain blue animal. It also features a short cameo by Knuckles at the end.
The reaction on YouTube has been somewhat mixed, but the film does have one fan - Sonic creator Yuji Naka himself. He tweeted "Awesome!" and shared the video with his followers.

I wish I could watch videos at work...
Knuckles is the best
I grew up with a Sega Genesis and would always brag about Sonic being the coolest hero ever! lately the games havent been the greatest but i thought this film was pretty good! I want to know what happens next! I hope this gives them the green light to actually make a full length feature of our favorite hedgehog. Also hope Sega & Nintendo team up to make a Sonic Wii U exclusive!!
@Joshers744 I agree, Knuckles is the best.
@WanderingPB I did too, but always played as Knuckles.
To quote Naka "Awesome!"
Did really fans complained about this? O_O
This is maybe the most amazing Fan-Made work I ever saw! Long time and huge fan of Sonic here and I'm almost moved that someone worked so hard in the name of the "Blue Blur" X3
And lots of cameos from internet "stars" too, I didn't expect to see James Rolfe and Douglas Walker, for not say the manies I probably missed to recognize XD
Now the question is... if fans can make such an awesome (as also Naka defined it) short movie, I wonder how a full lenghty official movie would be!!! (Hoping to have it done right and not ruined as sometimes happened with too many of ours dream-movies -cough- Super Mario Bros -cough- ).
I enjoyed this immensely
I really liked it. I thought the story behind it was well done. It's too bad that a considerable portion of the Sonic fanbase is so... unappeasable. They're why the rest of the fanbase can't have nice things.
Anyways, this make me want to see a full-fledged Sonic movie.
Eddie Lebron? Isn't he the guy who did a Mega Man fan movie some time ago?
EDIT: Also, wow! James Rolfe cameo at 3:50! (AVGN guy) Totally wasn't expecting that!
Sonic fans complain about the color of sonic's eyes so they have far too high of standards.
Hell i thought the only truly bad sonics were sonic 06 the wii games, and unleashed the rest were decent. with sonic 3 and sonic adventure 2 being my favorites.
I don't think it was executed to the same standards of some fan-made movies I've seen, however I think it captured the feeling of the early 1990's media they released like the comics and cartoons.
Plus this film is a million times better than that dreck "Super Mario Bros." Film that was released in '93.
Also, find a picture of Tom Hardy playing Charles Bronson. In an ideal world he would be Robotnik.
I loved this... only problem was it was only 18 minutes. Would've liked an hour at the least. But this is the closest thing I'll ever get to a Sonic movie, and I loved it. And it SO much better than that nightmare that was the Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Good work, with the exception of the bad word used in one scene. How an I supposed to show my kids with that in there?
Is it just me or did they combine the adventure plot line on south island? WHAT are they thinking!!?? Besides that, its ptetty cool. I prefer the the cartoon movie better so they should make another movie like that.
Steve Urkel...
Pretty good. I might of made a few changes (eg. voice acting), but overall, I have to say I'm impressed!
Well that certainly was interesting. It was well done for a fan movie. I'm not sure why they gave Knuckles fingers though, but that's not really a complaint. I hope this gives someone the idea to make a good, official, Sonic movie.
This movie was OK. But it was a little weird to see stuff from Sonic Adventure mixed in with the Classic Sonic generation. I do like the way how they made Robotnik out to look in his classic attire, VERY COOL indeed imo.
A++, I guarantee it's far better than any official effort to do something like this would ever have been. Give this kid money and let him go at it.
That was horrible.
Not bad at all. As a music geek myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the original score too.
I think that was pretty good for being fan made short. I don't like acting because I would feel so stupid and worthless, and I would never do do this(act) without dying inside a little. It would suck having to be the actors interacting with a computer animation on top of that, but aside from how I hate acting, and think people pretending to do stuff is stupd/pointless, it was pretty good. I'd say making Sonic's movements a little more realistic would be the right thing to do, and make that last Sonic level part actually look real somehow besides prerendering a whole scene on the computer. I can see why Yuji Naka enjoyed it.
I'm pretty sure they made Michael Jordan and Nueman from Seinfeld look at tennis balls when they made Space Jam, and talked to the tennis balls pretending to talk to the Looney Toons. Haha.
Oh ya. Makes Knuckles knuckles correctly, and say where Tails is. Pretty much every character was gone...
Looked great and look forward to the sequel
There was no real plot.
I could get technical about little things like Knuckles' gloves, but I was far more disappointed by the lack of any real plot or good acting.
It was pretty good, I really liked the cameos from people like Brenatlfloss, Craig from Screwattack and James Rofle. Sonic was a bit off in animation and definitely his voice, but apart from that it was good. I actually really liked this version of Robotnik.
Well, there is precisely nothing on earth that Sonic fans will not complain about.
I loved the guy who was Robotnik, great actor. If it had a little more polish and more sound effects, this would be amazing, but for a fan made video it's pretty beast. ^^
yea i actually thought it was pretty well done. Of course i cud nitpik but it could have been terrible
@bulby1994 What do you mean Sonic's voice was off?! They actually managed to recruit Jaleel White to reprise his role as the voice of Sonic like he was in all of the '90s Sonic cartoons!
I thought this was great. I hope there is a sequel soon.
I've seen much better fan videos. Not too impressed.
Sonic shouldn't talk.
Looks awesome but would prefer the Sonic of old rather than the Dreamcast Sonic. I like him when he's short and doesn't talk.
Wow, I really enjoyed that. They need to work on merging their 3D models with the real world but I did like their models. I like how the made Sonic look a little more realistic with quils shaped into the classic style.
They get major thumbs up for calling the bad guy Robotnik. I hate that his nickname has become the norm. Before you hit back that his name is Eggman in Japan, a lot of game characters have their name changed in localisation. For example, what the Japanese call Lizardon, we call Charizard.
I would have liked to see other characters but that is something they can save for other videos. Sonic free falling would have been a good place to introduce Tails in his biplane. Knuckles was a really nice touch.
I'll watch it on YouTube later.
Also, has anyone watched Mario Warfare or Mario Bros. Z (this one has Sonic)? Both are great fan series (although MW is still underway, and MBZ was cancelled after 8 or 9 episodes).
some of the acting was bad, some effects didn't look real (ex. when machines were chasing sonic, it looked more like they were gliding along the grass rather than RIDING, guns had no recoil, a single missile made a HUGE explosion on the ship, fire looked lame), CG Sonic looked like rubbish, was incredibly slow, and had a crappy voice actor
That voice actor was Jaleel White who voiced Sonic in Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sonic Underground.
Liked it a lot.
@Trikeboy
Yes, except Sega decided to retcon his name back to Eggman in all regions. Not the first time this happened either. For a long time, Peach was known as "Princess Toadstool" outside Japan, until Super Mario 64 came out, when Nintendo decided to unify her name in all regions to simply Peach (her original Japanese name).
That was rather boring. I wish I could get back the 17 minutes I just wasted watching it.
Great please make another one
Great!
i love it!
@BulbasaurusRex
Eh, I think he may have lost his touch to be honest. I seriously couldn't tell it was him.
Oh, my God, that really was Doug Walker that I spotted early in the video! Awesome!!!
Neat cameo
Also sweet, a letterbox widescreen format! I'm not certain if it's a 2.35:1, 2.39:1, or 2.40:1 aspect ratio but who cares, I'm all for watching things in widescreen!
As for the video, it's cool. It's certainly interesting, even though I couldn't help but be reminded of The Hunger Games near the end (maybe it's the similar exposition deep inside the forest and one moment where it was going through shaky-cam?). Acting was so-so, but Sonic looked cool, and Robotnik was menacing, plus the music was great. I liked it!
Ugh, I watched this and I really expected better. The acting is pretty terrible, as is most of the script. The robots look kinda cool, but they're not very well animated, and Sonic just looks freaky. Also, Jaleel White really should not be here. He worked well as a kid in The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, but now? Grown up? No way. They also got different elements from different Sonic games kinda mixed up. Not trying to sound like a hard-to-please fan or that I think it wasn't hard to make this (I definitely appreciate their effort), but this is just bad.
It's still better than the Super Mario Bros movie
It's better than Street Fighter The Movie.

Are Sonic fans really that unforgiving? If they're known to jump on every little mistake, how do we have Sonic and the Black Knight and Sonic Unleashed?
#burn
@BulbasaurusRex Except he sounded like a 40 year old Sonic here.
@Kid_A Some of us are, and they make the good ones look like bad guys. And in the name of bashing Sonic games, how did you forget Sonic '06?
@Kid_A: As evidenced by Capcom and MML3, the fans don't always have much of a voice when games come out or not. I consider myself a Sonic fan and Unleashed was absolutely horrid, as was Sonic '06. Anyways, just to be clear, I don't dislike this film because of the Sonic-related mistakes. If this was a normal movie and wasn't about Sonic I would still hate it. It's everything that makes a film good that I hate. The acting, script, story, characters (if you could call them that? did the G.U.N. people even have names?), choreography, camera, etc. are all very bad. Honestly there's not much I can give this movie credit for. I really thought it would be good when I saw the E-2000 robots, as they looked real, but in the end I just ended up laughing. Bah, I'm done.
To be fan made this is pretty amazing. i would love to see a full movie with a good budget.
I have a friend who would be a better voice actor for sonic though :/
Change the voice acting, give it more backstory, revize the script a bit and it would be a great movie.
Personally, I thought Jaleel White did just as good a job as he always does, and the guy playing Robotnik sounded pretty good, too. However, I have to agree that the rest of the acting and dialogue was terrible, and that missile launcher prop looked like a cheap painted pipe. The effects work was pretty good for a fan-made film, although I would certainly expect a lot better with a real budget. As for continuity, I don't really care that things mixed in like that. It's not like there's an official canon for the Sonic-verse. Where did the name Julian come from though? I thought he was always Ivo Robotnik.
@GeminiSaint While that's true, in this case they kept Robotnik as his official name (as evedenced by his family in Sonic Adventure 2 as well all the instruction manuals), while always referencing him as Eggman in the script. Personally, I find it very annoying. Besides, wasn't the Super Mario Bros. retcon to make her full name Princess Peach Toadstool?
Since when did Unleashed join the bottom tier of Sonic games alongside the likes of Sonic '06, Sonic GBA, Secret Rings, and Black Knight? The day stages are excellent, while the night stages are at least tolerable. It's a mediocre game but not terrible.
I liked it. It did have its flaws but what do you expect, with its low budget
There was a lot of talking about things happening, but I didn't see a lot of things happen. Ever heard of "Show, Don't Tell"?
Clearly, a lot of heart and effort were put into making this fan film. If the cast and crew had a great time, I'm happy for them. Unfortunately, I wasn't impressed. Jaleel White's Sonic voice today sounds absolutely dreadful, the acting was mostly bad, and I just felt it was unimpressive. That said, I did appreciate the cameos, I thought Robotnik's actor (D.J. Hazard) did okay, and the end credits music is nice.
As long as Sonic's creator likes it, though, I guess that's all that matters.
I enjoyed it. The actor who played Robotinik has my vote!
I want a sequel!
That was cool. I will definitely watch the next one. Overall the amount of effort put into it for a short film was awesome!
lol.... i liked it. and for every body who is hating what did you expect IT WAS FAN MADE!!!..... could you have done better? (if so make one better then this)
@Shanksta exactly... and yet people still dont know how long it took to make this 18:30 video....but yey they want to judge it.......
@True_Hero Yes, the fanbase is unpleasable for not liking a "film" that is legitimately terrible. Let's just blindly praise everything; since it's made by fans, it can't possibly be bad!
"Sonic fans are notoriously picky and will jump on the smallest mistake, regardless of how hard you work."
Yes, because if you worked hard on something, it's automatically immune to criticism! What an ignorant point of view. Don't generalize and demonize the Sonic fanbase just because you liked a movie that was objectively bad.
For a fan-movie it's not that bad in my opinion! And lol at the avgn being in it!
Hello mr Yuji Naka, looks very nice on design knuckles picture! But I think that the fans more waiting for sonic adventure 3 for ps4. I hope also because the first on 1999 was very amazing! And that picture looks like also the same only better! That's a good start and I hope please make the same like sonic adventure 1 but better. I wish that the voice all of on the sonic adventure 1 back on the New sonic adventure 3 design. The tropicals was amazing the city the train to the Woods names mystic ruins. I hope please take your time for this idea. Very goodluck and thank you for anything!
Much greetings Andreas Lischer
