It was nice to see Luigi be his normal height in the port (in the SNES original he was a palette-swap of Mario). Of course, who doesn't love to play the 1983 arcade Mario Bros. remake in these four Super Mario Advance games?
This was my fifth Game Boy Advance game back in 2002 (the year I moved here). I think this is a decent port of the SNES launch title. The only main problems I have with it are the ridiculously lighter color scheme (why did GBA games have to be bright?) and slighty weaker sound samples (compared to the SNES original, which had great sound samples). Otherwise, it's a decent port (neither port nor re-release beats the ole SNES classic, imo).
@Damo - see, now that is why I think the homing laser is the best combo in Gunstar Heroes! Just wish that game did not have an ending that felt so abrupt ["What happens next?"], 'cause it was so much fun.
@BlueBandanaJake - nope, neither Gradius III nor R-Type III: The Third Lightning were ever ported to the MegaDrive console. I have played them both, and I think they're quite fun, though I have yet to beat them. The latter is my favorite of the two (I could only get up to the third stage boss), and I think I got pretty far in the SNES version of Gradius III (the arcade original which I've played on Gradius Collection for the PSP, on the other hand, was very difficult in comparison). @Damo - well, to each his own, though I do see where you're coming from. Axelaydoes have a rockin' soundtrack, and I do enjoy listening to its music; the main gripe I have in that aspect is that Konami didn't leave a sound test in the options menu. I do find it interesting how in Axelay you could decide how bright or dark you want the game to be in the options menu. I've more fondness for Super Earth Defense Force, though I think Axelay's fun (and, admittedly, better), too. It might just be me, but I think the latter is easier in comparison: in the former I could only beat the fourth stage boss halfway; while in Axelay I always manage to get to final stage, only to lose all my lives (up) to the final boss (I'm still on Easy mode). I'll beat it someday, for I will persevere.
@Mayhem - oh, yeah, I've been interested in that game. Apparently, from what I've looked up, there is absolutely no slowdown in that game no matter how many enemies and/or objects appear onscreen (I'd say the same for Mr. Nutz on the SNES [which I've played], but it's a platformer, not a shmup).
@vonseux - y'know, I haven't played Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium in awhile (not that I got very far, because I wasn't used to equipping my characters back then). I should play it again sometime. @Damo - as for Landstalker: The Treasures of King Nole, eh, I think it's okay; but, to each his own.
I do agree about the PC-Engine having great shmups (Gate of Thunder, Super Star Soldier); as well as great cute'em ups (Star Parodier, Detana!! TwinBee) [all them I played on VC].
Nice review, Damo, a 6 seems about right (even though I still like it a lot). I do agree that it's not a bad game, and I do concur that the homing weapon is the best weapon out of the eight that you can choose from. I do like how you could level up after shooting a certain amount of enemies. Plus, the "wing men" were really useful, especially when you reach the level cap [5]. The thing that startles me about this review is that you neglected to talk about the game's music (this is one of the few video game reviews I've read from the site that did this), which I thought was the best aspect of the game. This was one of the first games I played in the genre.
Great review, Jamie. This game took four months to make as well? Amazing! I remember having watched the Hanna-Barbera cartoon version of The Addams Family when I was little. Fun show. The visuals, from what I've seen, look fascinating! Ocean sure had a knack for implementing beautiful visuals when it came to SNES games.
If anyone can get past that fourth stage boss, then I salute you, 'cause I still need to do so. Something tells me I'm one of the very few users here that is familiar with this game.
Dang, 'twas it that bad, really? I don't remember having played it much (probably due to lack of motivation), but I didn't think it was that bad (didn't think it was great, either). I've always loved the 8-bit synth conversion of The Addams Family theme that plays in the title screen.
The characters are very great and very likeable. R.I.P. Carl Banks (1901-2000), you wonderful creator of $crooge McDuck, and the Beagle Boys, and so forth.
You know, I think I may have seen screenshots from this game in a magazine back when I was in elementary school, iirc. Hello, deegan714, welcome to NintendoLife.
Is it just me, or are the colors in the screenshots lighter than they're supposed to be? When I play the game, it's not as bright as the screenshots here show them to be.
DuckTales is the only game from Capcom that I own for my NES. Which Disney game for the NES should I try next, I wonder? Mickey Mousecapade (even though it was developed by Hudson Soft, but published by Capcom in the West, from what I looked up)? Darkwing Duck? DuckTales 2? The possibilities are endless!! I'd say The Little Mermaid, but I have the Game Boy version of the game.
This game's always had a Mega Man feel for me; maybe due to its nonlinearity; maybe because of the way the screen slowly scrolls when it comes to meeting a boss; or gradually scrolling when you go up or down; or maybe it was the fact that $crooge McDuck's sprite looked similar to that of Mega Man's (to me)? Even so, this game's still a blast. Moon Theme FTW!!! I wish I knew the secret as to how $crooge can be able to breathe in space without a space suit.
Wow, this review was a complete surprise! And what a good surprise it was. Good review, Bryan, and welcome to NintendoLife (assuming you're new). I've enjoyed this game ever since I purchased it at GameCrazy six years ago. I do concur, it is just as fun to hear the theme song in the NES as much as in the series. I need to watch the cartoon again (good thing YouTube uploadds classic cartoon episodes).
@piguy - Zero Wing is a 16-bit title, though, not an 8-bit one. I'll bet the Engrish from that game gave everyone in England (and the world eventually) a laugh the first time around.
Nice to know that Super Earth Defense Force has come to the European VC. Played this game at my relative's house a lot when I was little. This might be the first time that Europe has ever got a chance to play this game, though I could be wrong.
Just wondering, since I noticed that the game is being viewed from a top-down perspective: does Fester walk in four directions (like he did in Fester's Quest) or all eight of them?
Good review, Jamie. This game has had me interested recently. It really took Ocean four months to make this game? Wow! That's fourteen less than they took to make Mr. Nutz for the SNES; that game was planned to be an Amiga title as well, until they decided to stick to a more accessible console (SNES) [from what I looked up]. You're more likely to come across an SNES cartridge than you are an Amiga one (mainly because I never saw the latter). I should probably look into The Addams Family soon. Though I disagree about Super Ghouls'n Ghosts' difficulty (imo, the difficulty is slightly overrated); I do think it has a tiny bit of challenge, but it's nowhere near as challenging as Plok, imo. I find that the more I play Super Ghouls'n Ghosts, the easier it becomes for me.
I remember when I was little how I watched the '90s version of the show a lot (I was a huge cartoon fanatic when I was little). For the longest time I never knew that there was a game based on the series.
Are you reviewing the game, Zach? 'cause I noticed that your post is in gray (and, from what I recall Drake telling me in his Illusion of Gaia page, the box is in gray if the staff member made the page).

For some reason, in the past, I always read the nomenclature as Exed Eyes.
Re: Review: Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals (DS)
Nice review, Corbie. I hope I get a chance to try this one someday (though I still want to experience the SNES original, too).

I do remember one of the last stages in Gunstar Heroes being a fun take on the shmup genre.
Re: Nintendo Download: 1st November 2010 (North America)
@JumpMad - Shaq Fu is a licensed title, because the main character is a real person [Shaquille O'Neal]. Plus, I heard bad things about that game.

The game doesn't start becoming diffiicult until the fourth stage.

"The name's Bond, James Bond."

That's okay, Kingbuilder, to each his own. Though, personally, I thought Blaster Master was king out of the two.
