@NEStalgia You beat me to it; other than Mario 64, Rare’s games, and a handful of others, most 3D platformers of the time were garbage, including the Crash games. Sloppy controls, bad camera angles, choppy graphics (although the latter is probably remedied in these remastered versions), what’s not to dislike?
@FantasiaWHT I’m not a lawyer, but part of my job is understanding law as it pertains to the media, and this is easily covered by the “satire” argument, even more so than Retro City Rampage would be (RCR is game parodying game; this is game parodying streaming shows, in an extremely non-threatening way). If there’s one thing that may attract some trouble, it’s that logo.
I have just realized over the past few weeks that Fantastico makes some fantastic games, so I will definitely keep an eye on this one. They also did Black Paradox, a great rogue like shmup (better than Sterdenn, IMO) and Top Run, a stylish, fun runner. They have another 4 or 5 games on Switch that I haven’t played yet, including Firework. And for those who like good music in their games, whoever is doing the music for Fantastico is top-notch. Black Paradox’s soundtrack sounds like a lost album from synth wave master Carpenter Brut.
@YANDMAN Online leaderboards. That’s huge for me. I love the old Konami games, but I haven’t bought any of their collections due to the lack of this feature. The Hamster games do it right
@Daniel36 At the risk of going way off topic, "Metroidvania" really grinds my gears: what's with the "vania?" SOTN was released TEN years after Metroid (and five years after the genre's pinnacle, Super Metroid). Thus, should be "Metroid-like."
I got it the day it was released, since CV3 was my favourite NES game. At the time, CV4's graphics were breathtaking, and the soundtrack even more so... IMO the best soundtrack of the 16-bit era, and the best for any CV game. And now you could whip in eight directions! Simon's handling received a massive upgrade in CV4.
My problem with all of the Metroid-inspired CV games — don't get me wrong, I enjoyed them and beat every one — is that they are too easy.
Game of the decade. Best game ever made, IMO. And that comes from a die-hard retro gamer here (I probably spend 75% of my gaming time with 8- and 16-bit era games)
I used to feed the In the Hunt machine at my local arcade relentlessly. And I usually had the machine to myself because everyone else was busy with SFII and Mortal Kombat.
@Tandy255 There's a Retro Game Challenge 2? The original is one of my favourite DS games!
I live in Canada, but I had a girlfriend from Lincolnshire for many years, and this was one of my favourites. I can still remember the first time I heard her say, "Would you like an 'am bap love?" Bap = bun
I enjoy many of the Arcade Archives games, but Karate Champ was bad in the arcades of the '80s, and age has not helped it one iota. It was popular though ... not sure why. Maybe because it was the only one-on-one fighting game?
@PurinPuff I fully agree that GX is the best in the series, but you can't compare the two... they are generations apart. For its time F-Zero was simply the best console racing game ever made. It's probably the SNES game I return to the most, probably at least once a year, and I still own the copy I bought in 1990.
This game is indeed fantastic; possibly my favorite third-party game on n64. Since I still have my copy, I’d hope a Switch version would have some upgrades, at least graphically.
Jet Force Gemini was possibly my favourite game on the N64. My ears still recall fondly the Predator-like tunes on the purply-green cliffside area... what a game.
I didn't care much for Conker... I thought it would be like BK, but there was too much visual clutter and annoying things to do. I always thought its crassness was there to make up for the crappy gameplay (much like Mortal Kombat used gore to try to make up for a fighting system that was vastly inferior to SFII).
Can someone explain the combat to me? Sounds cumbersome if you keep having to pause it. Are you actually moving around and swinging your weapon, is it menu-based or what? I find some of these reviews spend way too much time explaining the story and not enough time explaining gameplay and control.
Vice: Project Doom is excellent, and I'm glad to see a Culture Brain game on there. As an aside, the SNES sequel, Little Ninja Boy is excellent.
I agree these NES offerings are too few, but there are so many games that flew under the radar back then that still could be added: Holy Diver, Code Name Viper, Legendary Wings, Rollergames, Magic of Shehezerade, Little Samson, Burai Fighter, SCAT, Guardian Legend, Little Nemo, Gyruss, Over Horizon.... I could go on and on. A lot of people just seem to want the games that have been released over and over again, through the NES Mini, 3DS, collections, or on Virtual Console.
These two "obscure" games being added is a good sign to me (although seriously, they should be releasing at least five a month and expand to other systems).
Fanservice? Is that what it's called when animators create characters with the face of a little girl and body of a voluptuous woman? If that's something you enjoy, have at it creep. And maybe stay away from schoolyards.
I ain't no prude. I enjoy porn, but with adult actors. Not childish looking cartoon characters. On top of that, why throw these kinds of distractions into a shmup? Makes a lot more sense for an RPG.
And to defend it because it's "normal" in Japan is a cop out. There are things that are "normal" in the United States, China, Russia, Saudi Arabia etc. that are viewed as pretty damn abnormal by others.
Well, I guess one big bonus on this one is the online leaderboard. NES version of this has to be one of the worst arcade-to-home ports I've ever experienced!
I'm all for some Raiden, but the suggestion in the story that $29.99 US is a nice price is a bit off, compared to other games in the genre on Switch. I'll wait for a discount.
I love the Genesis version, but have never played the arcade version. I hope Sega Ages keeps the arcade ports coming, as many of us have Genesis and Master System games in one form or another.
Anyone know if this game has an online leaderboard?
While I have seen the negative effects of Fortnite addiction on my 14-year-old son, I’d rather police him myself (unplugging the router when he neglects his chores is hilarious fun). Government prohibition is a terrible idea.
Sounds like Harry is channelling that Nazi uniform he pulled out a few years back
Star Soldier! The predecessor to some excellent Turbo-Grafx shmups. Cool to see a game from a forgotten publisher like Taxan join the fray (maybe the excellent Low G Man or Burai Fighter will come too?)
Ya'll are a bunch of sourpusses about this service. Three games a month... it gives you time to appreciate these games. And if you don't like em, I'm sure your gaming backlog is beckoning. Besides, if you got 20 NES games a month, how many would you actually play more than once? Shoot, when I got Punch-Out for my NES as a kid, that game alone kept me going for months.
@Crono1973 Dude, people refer to the "Nintendo" and "PS" games because it's a logical delineation. FFVII gave the series a dramatic facelift. 1 to 3 (on NES/Famicom) and 4-6 (SNES/Super Fam) all had the same flat, overhead perspective compared with the PS games' far more detailed, 3D look. Those labels are not a comment on quality, as there are great games throughout the series.
Is it too late for Sega to redesign the Genesis/Mega Drive controllers? I have always hated them. Having those three big face buttons side by side was so awkward.
I have heard some rumblings about the fact that not all games are available right off the hop (as well as for the Nintendo online NES games), but I appreciate that more games will come gradually (and free), as it gives players the chance to more fully explore the first offerings. I have bought compilations before with 20+ games before, and invariably some games just don't get the attention they deserve.
Am really looking forward to Prehistoric Isle. Also, while this doesn't really taint the collection for me — it kind of just makes it more complete — but the NES version of Ikari Warriors 2 is one of the worst games to ever grace that system!
F-Zero GX: Best GameCube game ever, and possibly the best modern racing game ever, at least for a one-player experience (easily better than Burnout, IMO, but there may be other games I'm not thinking about).
Tracks and visuals were outstanding, control was spot on, music was amazing, while the characters and world it expanded upon offered a breath of fresh air for the series.
Yes, the learning curve was steep, but it was well worth the effort. The satisfaction of zooming around the beautiful tracks at extremely high speeds without hitting anything was without equal.
I've been absolutely addicted to Flinthook for more than a month ... working on the third bounty. When I need a break from that, I will download Omega Fighter for my shmup fix.
I'm not a huge fan of tower defence, but I love this game. It's got a lot of character, plenty of length and offers a wide range of challenges for both noobs and experts.

Anyway, this could be cool, like a more intense Pang 😁

@Hikingguy Life Force, yes! I have happy memories of beating that game many a time with my little brother

In no particular order:
Breath of the Wild
Super Metroid
F-Zero GX
Mario Kart 8
Contra 3

Looks like fun, but I don't get the need for the sexuality. In fact, I would be embarrassed if my kids or anyone else saw me playing this game.
