Distractions, that was the NES games are distractions. They are meant to take away the focus from the fact that you are paying for online gaming and cloutsaves.
Oh, but the price is so low, why should this matter.
Because you are paying for a service that is free on PC, and PC is a format there is easy to make back up of you data.
So Nintendo is making it hard to make backups and the adds a fee on the only real service that allows it.
And then the is the VC drop. Why? Because CV games are cheap and popular. And there is more money for Nintendo to give you Nintendo Online with the VC games. You just pay more for the same service.
Imagine if EA add a small monthly fee to Origin so you could play you old games, online gaming and access to you could saves. Well that what Nintendo has done.
We are just distracted by the shiny new console to notice
Question? If Nintendo could make the Nintendo Switch play old games from Switch game cards and they were only available on a made-to-order scale. Would you order any old games for the price of a game card + VC price?
I don't care much about the classic consoles. I would like the possibility to expand the game library legally.
I would much more prefer a cheap "Virtual Console" console so I game by and download the classic games. Or failing that a cheap "Nintendo Online" console with a greatly expanded game library
@JaxonH I agree with fairness in this case. Nintendo should hunt down ROM sites because they allowing illegal use, they need to protect their brand and copyright
But I do not see much fairness from Nintendo when it comes to use support. Right now Nintendo is only look forward. So we are not seeing any backward compatibility or descent "retro" store on the Nintendo Switch.
It would not be hard to make the Switch read and play the old NES, SNES and N64 games. And then you just have to put the old game file on a Switch game card. And there we go old games in a new format.
If Nintendo goes full mobile in the future. Then there would be a marked for older generation games on stationary planforms. Like the PC or ps4. That would give Nintendo a extra income on old games that are not marked on the current platform. But cross platform on games made for the current platform? Not a chance. We might get lucky and Nintendo will allow use to use the Nintendo online on a PC to stream NES games. But only if we are lucky
@DenDen Maybe they are make the game with be more powerful tablets in mind. They just need a controller and the high end tablets are good to go. But I would be extremely surprised if this was the case. It would compete with the Switch and that would make no sense.
It would most like be something akin to Super Mario Run. And that would be a waste of time for Nintendo, ban mobile games hurt their brand
The DS clam dock would need a touch screen, a DS card reader, a microSD reader for system memory and a battery that support the dock.
The Wii dock would just need a CD-ROM drive that can handle GC size disks, a microSD reader for system memory.
Then you would just need a program that boots up the System you want to run.
I think that the Switch could be able to run the 2DS OS, the Wii OS and the Wii U OS if need be.
By the time and effort need to make this would not be cover by the income from the sales of such specialised things.
It would be easier just to make a case where the Switch is flip 90 degrees and then have a program that defies the screen in top and bottom.
And then you have a somewhat decent 2ds replacement.
And for the dock with the CD-ROM drive, that not really needed. Nintendo just need to sell GC and Wii games on the Switch and they are good.
@stevenw45
Why a series of Switch docks that mergers old systems to the Switch.
A clam dock to add DS, 2DS and 3DS games to the Switch.
A stationary dock that allows GC, Wii and Wii U games.
And then you just need to bring back the virtual console to the Switch. And you will have a possible to add NES, SNES, N64 and Game Boy games to the Switch.
You can even add a physical release for the virtual console games.
Switch Mario Collection
Switch Kart Collection
Switch Zelda Collection
and other Collections
This could make the Switch the ultimative console. A new release and retro compatibility master system
@Leej07 It is illegal because some people do not possess common sense or compassion. Because of this, the law has to set the bar low to prevent this people from exploiting the system.
So a ROM is only ever legal if it did not break the copyright to make is and you can only use if you out own the right to do so.
Now this rule is make to protect the creators of the content that we love, without this protection the gaming industry would collapse.
Now I personally do not mind people using ROMs, as long at they buy a legal copy when it become available to them. Not doing so, show a lack of compassion towards the people that make the requested content available legally.
As for the example of Satellaview, you could in theory buy the rights to it so you can make it available to others. Now if you justify the illegal ROMs on the base that the price of the Satellaview rights are to high. Then how would you legally determine this?
@Spectra When they re-release all the games that are on the Classic Mini NES. Then they will move on to the Clasisic Nini SNES. And then Nintendo will cancel the online service in the current form because they have moved onto the next console. Then they have to release all the NES games again, and the cycle repeats
Not a fan of the online rental solution, just because I have no control over what games are in the library.
They should just have made a NES emulator program and sold the games as DLCs for that program.
Then Nintendo could have a starter bundle they could have sold on a physical copy.
The "classic mini NES" game bundle would have be a nice candidate.
And if they want to mix in the online part.
Just have the NES emulator program be some that free as long as you subscribe and give out a free NES DLC each month.
And they can do the same with the SNES, N64 and GC.
Nintendo should just make a program that is simply NES emulator. Sell it with the "classic mini NES" games list, and add extra games as DLCs. If done correct, Nintendo only needs to modify the program to run on another platform when it becomes necessary.
And if Nintendo is really clever they could work with ROM sites. That way they can remove ROMs that are being sold and keep an eye on what people are downloading.
Now that does not make the ROMs legal in any way. But if Nintendo can use this site to figure out what the market wants, well that could be good for the market.
And the Market will turn to crime if a product is not available. And that a bad thing for everyone.
I do not see better spec as a Switch upgrade, but as a Switch 2. So I do not think that we will see this in a Switch ½.
A better screen would be nice, but it would add to the cost. So it will more likely be a Switch 2 feature.
More memory can be done easily without much extra cost. Not by upgrading the internal memory, but the expandable memory. MicroSD ports are not that expensive to make, so adding a few more should be easy. Want 256 memory? buy one 256 card. Want upgrade to 512? just get extra 256 card.
If we want more battery time, then a power bank support or an external battery would do the trick.
And if we want a cheaper model a stationary version would do the trick. No screen and no big battery should lower the price. And if you put it a robust case you can still go from place to place and game. You just need to find a TV and power outlet.
The Switch is not good at competing with other media for users time. It a really good gaming platform. But it you want people to think Nintendo = entertainment you need to go beyond gaming. The PS2 was a really good example of a entertainment platform. And the Switch setup is not able to do the same.
But it can do something that the other can not. Provide a gaming platform on the move. And the only thing that competing with that right now is the 3DS.
@jhewitt3476 Well if you give the switch the ability to use its dock more you can really do some nice stuff. Like have a HD that can store digital games for backup or swap out. Or you can pop in a game card with the Wii / Wii U OS on it and have it access the dock for access to a CD-drive and have one of the MicroSDs function as the system memory for that OS. Is short you can have a Wii with switch CPU, graphics and RAM
More MicroSD cards slots, so we can expand the memory in steps. A united online store (Wii U, 2DS/3DS and Switch) so we do not have to buy the same game more than once and virtual console.
@nonprophetmusic I did not consider your comment rude.
I am just tired of consoles making games that cost more and are limited to a narrow platform when compared to PC games.
And it make the console market harder to compete in. Because when you have now backwards compatibility of any kind, you lose some of you selling point.
The reason I get the Wii U was because I saw it as an upgrade of my old Wii, When I look at the Switch, I see a new console I have to build a game library for. I might as well by a PlayStation or a Xbox. Or just use the money to buy PC games.
Now I can understand that backwards compatibility does not have to be a free service. It could cost my 1 euro per game and I would not have a problem with it. Or it could be part of the paid online service. But to have to buy the game and it DLC for full price. Not a chance. That a deterrent in my book. And one of the reasons I do not buy a Switch. The biggest reason is that I would rather use the money that a Switch cost to buy PC games
Well done Nintendo. You have made account based gaming work on your console.
Now let's see if you can figure out doing this between systems. So if you the Wii U digital version of BotW, you can play it on the Switch without having to buy the game again and it DLCs.
I am not a fan of this kind of service. Sure it not that expensive, but I like to have control of the games that are in my library. With this kind of rental service you might be able to play Super Mario Bros. 3 one day and the next day it's removed to make room for some other game. Or simply removed because the stop the service.
@Alantor28 It's like any other business. You have to balance operation and development cost against income. And you have to do this while under pressure from competitors and the marked.
In the console marked you are selling purpose driven computers and software. You income is determined on how strong you brand is and how good you product hold up pressure.
Now you have to make sure that a development gives you the maximum income. So it is best not to have too many development projects running. But if you have to few you will also be at risk.
Now if we take the Nintendo Switch hardware and OS setup. If Nintendo wanted to launch a new stationary console. They could start from scratch and use a lot of money developing the new console. Or they could take the Switch and OS and put in in a new box.
Doing that right now would be a bad idea, but when the Switch line is moving on the old hardware could be used to make a classic console really easy. This is something we see done in the car industry.
With the game boy series I do not think that Nintendo will go for a new motherboard setup. They may use the Switch motherboard and use it in the new DS3 series
The best thing Nintendo could do is to take the modular design of the Switch and expand on it. Make a core console that can be connected to different screens and game card ports.
You want a Switch? You buy a the core console and the Switch unit (screen, card reader and controllers) You want a 3DS? You buy a the core console and the 3DS unit (screen, card reader, and controllers) You want a Wii? You buy a the core console and the 3DS unit (HDMI, CD reader and controllers)
Next generation? Just release a new core console with better hardware and off we go.
The module upgrade of Core, Battery and system setup can help to keep the price down. And offer a wide range of options.
A new DS would be nice. But it need to be backward compatible.
The sad thing is that I do not think that it will be backward compatible. It will probably have some new gimmick that will make it impossible to play the old games. Like a single screen with a new size format that does not fit the old game or a new controller setup. Perhaps it will have no buttons and will just be one big touch screen.
To be honest I would prefer a non portable console instead. Like a Switch Home, a cheap system with backward compatible to the Wii and Wii U.
Let see. Nintendo want us to pay for a service where we get access to old games. But we don't really have control over what game we get access to.
And this service is more or less the reason why they do not sell the old games like they did on Wii and Wii U.
Nope, I do not like this one bit. It smell like an excuse to block backward compatibility so they can earn the money for the same game again. And this time we get to just get to rent the games.
1. Take a Switch
2. Remove the screen and big battery.
3. Add 3 extra data card slots, so it can have a lot of memory for games.
4. Put it in a Gamecube like shell.
Sell with Switch game card that has 10 Gamecube classic game on it.
And stand-alone game with 10 Gamecube classic and 10 N64 classic.
@Dan_Dan A lot can happen in 30 years that can make your physical copies unplayable. I have personally lost a few original Game Boy games do to age. And I have worn down 2 PS2 console in my time
Funny that people want to protect the stores that sell the physical game, but not the companies that produce the games.
Selling the games to others means that you are taking away sells from the gaming company.
But that OK because you can get the game cheaper? And it OK that game stores make their living of us being cheap?
Let be honest. People do not care about store, only about the price of the product. People do not care about the gaming companies, they just want the games as cheap as possible. And people don't like "digital only" because we are force to pay the money that the company wants for the product. Because there are no 2nd hand sells artificial lower the price.
I can see this happening because they want to prevent pirate copies and pre-own sells. Both do not earn the gaming company any money.
I think we will see a shift where you have to bind the game to an account and then download the execute file as a minimum. The game discs will just be pre-installed storage disks.
This will probably also be a part of the collectors addition. Books, music and pre-installed storage disks. The rights to the game will be on a key code.
And there you have it, death of the traditional physical copies within 4 years.
True death of separate physical storage media will not happen until 2TB flash hard disk becomes really cheap and a common component in consoles
I have no problem with banning people that break the EULA.
But there are concerns about how it done.
If the ban is on the account. Then Nintendo need to prove that the hack was done while the account was used. If not fair that if I buy a used console that be hack that my account is banned for what the previous owner has done.
I much easier if the ban is on the console, if there is a hack on the console then the ban will be placed on it. But if that is the case, then the ban can not follow the account to another console as the article states.
To me this shows that Nintendo are still amateurs when it comes to account handling.
The is no need to fear the digital future. I have a few old game boy game that can no longer play. So just because you have a physical copy will not save retro gaming for future generations. Because physical copy will decay with time.
Digital copies will be able to survive longer because they we are able to make backups.
What we need to fear and stand up to are companies that limiting our digital rights.
If I have purchased a digital right to a game one one system, I do not see the fairness of me having to buy the same exact game on update system.
Imagine if Nintendo made a force update to the Switch that improves the operating system, but prevent is from running old game, be that physical or digital. Sure you can play new and better games, but you lose the old ones.
Sound horrible right? Well that what happening with nearly all console generations. We get to keep our old game as long as the media and console works, after that tough luck.
And even when we get a new media that not limited by physical means, the companies chose not to support it and add limitation to the user so they can sell the same game again, in the same format!
My main problem with the Switch is Nintendo's lack of a unified Eshop and that is a powered up Gameboy.
I hope that Nintendo would make a true home console.
With is not that hard.
Just take a Switch and remove screen and special controller functions.
And 2 extra microSD card slot, giving the console 3 microSD card slot and a Game card slot.
This will allow "cheap" and easy explanation of the consoles storage capacity.
Unify the Estore so you can play all digital purchases from the Wii U and Switch on the new console.
And you have a cheap 4K console to fight against the PS and Xbox. Because lets face it, cost of the console has a impact on people choices.
You can even add Wii and Wii U controller support to allow digital sell copies of Wii and Wii U games.

Re: Reggie Says Nintendo Switch Online Will Connect You To Legacy Content "In A Meaningful Way"
This is not a service, but a money grab.
Re: New Trademarks Suggest Nintendo Has GameCube On The Brain
How to make the best new cube.
Done.
Re: US Research Analyst Believes Gaming Could Become 100% Digital By 2022
@Dan_Dan A lot can happen in 30 years that can make your physical copies unplayable.
I have personally lost a few original Game Boy games do to age.
And I have worn down 2 PS2 console in my time
Re: US Research Analyst Believes Gaming Could Become 100% Digital By 2022
Funny that people want to protect the stores that sell the physical game, but not the companies that produce the games.
Re: US Research Analyst Believes Gaming Could Become 100% Digital By 2022
I can see this happening because they want to prevent pirate copies and pre-own sells.
Re: Ubisoft CEO Believes The Next Generation Of Consoles Will Be The Last
Steaming is not stable enough as it is right now.
Maybe in the future it will be a contender.
But what it gonna hurt the console market is the rise in cross platform games.
The are fewer and fewer games that are unique to just one platform.
This is good for the game developers, but bad for the console developers.
Re: Nintendo Bans Online Services For Prominent Hacker's Switch Console
I have no problem with banning people that break the EULA.
But there are concerns about how it done.
If the ban is on the account. Then Nintendo need to prove that the hack was done while the account was used.
If not fair that if I buy a used console that be hack that my account is banned for what the previous owner has done.
I much easier if the ban is on the console, if there is a hack on the console then the ban will be placed on it.
But if that is the case, then the ban can not follow the account to another console as the article states.
To me this shows that Nintendo are still amateurs when it comes to account handling.
Re: Soapbox: I'm Secretly Terrified Of An All-Digital Gaming Future
Re: Nintendo Is Ramping Up Switch Production To 25 To 30 Million Units A Year
It's not hard to move the extra copies.
Option 1. Unified Estore allowing digital copies from Wii U and DS over. And that just a software update.
Option 2. New Smash Brothers game.
Option 3. New Pokemon game.
They just need to keep the games shelved until the sells drop.
Then release the game, and the sells will rise again.
Re: Ubisoft Thinks The Next Console Cycle Isn't Far Away, So Where Does That Leave Switch?
Its easy to win the updated console war.
Take a Switch.
Remove battery. This will lower the price.
Replace screen with a HDMI port. This will lower the price.
Replace the one microSD card port with a tripped microSD card port. This will tripped the consoles storage capacity.
Add unify the Estore support so you have access to all digital purchases from the Wii U and Switch.
Release with Smash Brothers Game.
And there you have it a cheap console with a game the people want.
Re: Wii U's Failure Is Responsible For Switch's Success, Says Reggie
