Re: Video: Why All The Remakes, Nintendo?

@Aerona Why not, if its a Resident Evil/ Final Fantasy style remake where its an entirely new game basically--this is Zelda, outside of Mario and Smash; there's no better franchise to be the flag bearer for the holidays.

Remakes are big money right now. They are basically a guaranteed sales success. And those proceeds can help fund new projects and create interest in a franchise. A good showing from Star Fox probably nets a proper sequel.

@quickbeam They actually did have an ambitious remake with Samus Returns. Everyone forgets about that game. It was still about elimination of the Metroid’s, but the game was drastically changed.

Personally I’m not of the school of thought that games need to get bigger and bigger. But the general audience definitely is. Zelda has grown beyond that core Nintendo fan; it’s become a legit mass appeal blockbuster on the back of BotW/Tears. Nintendo is only looking to grow that with the movie coming out. The timing of this movie finally happening is not a coincidence. They aren’t going to pair the movie with a game that feels old, small or outdated. They are going to want this to be an epic, so people are rushing to the movies to see Zelda. Which will in turn get more people to buy the games. I think they are going to go all out on this one.

@Arix I expect the opposite, I expect a FF VII like approach on this one. A 1:1 remake even with the upgrades would feel outdated out of the box. You go from the sprawling worlds of the open air Zelda’s to something thats the size of the tutorial area from Breath of the Wild. I don’t see them making that mistake.

@quickbeam I hope so, if you look at the polls floating around that’s what people want. They do 1:1 even with the updated graphics, camera controls and QOL stuff. For today’s audience the size and scope of it will feel outdated. You can’t go from Tears’ open world to a world you can go from end to the other in 4 minutes. And I don’t just mean Hyrule Field, you can go from the middle of Lake Hylia to the Death Mountain crater in like 4 minutes.

@BrewsterTea Well main point is, it’s not official description by Nintendo. Them making sure that’s gone is them saying they don’t want that describing their game. But besides that point “timeless gameplay” to me would mean it’s going to play like classic Zelda. That even if it goes the RE and FF route and completely alter the content of the game. It will ultimately play like classic Zelda, which is abundantly obvious.

The day/night cycle length was a product of how small the field was. If it took too long, you would never see the Stalchildren. And I think in particular, they wanted that first day for you to not be able to get to Castle Town before the bridge closes. The N64 was not capable of having one unique cycle either, just to make sure that initial run ended in darkness.

As far as Navi, she was so talkative because it was everyone's first foray into 3D and Nintendo(unreasonably so) thought we needed extra hand holding. Obviously that would not be the case anymore. Though I think they should expand on Navi as a character and their relationship. Because its the backbone of Majora's Mask--he went off just to find her. That remake is probably going to happen too, so I think they should play up that relationship so that it makes sense he would be so desperate to find her. Look to him and Midna as great example.

I thought it was great. I feel the tiniest of teases for OoT was an F you to the leakers. But also a strategic decision to not overshadow all these games and to time it for maximum impact I.e. right before the price hike. They showed a solid slate of game types(though no fighters) something for everybody. Lots of ports, but this week has shown the Switch 2 catching up. Many more titles are now set to be day and date with the other platforms. That is big.

@breach187 Many of these games would have run to poorly to be on Switch. DMC 5 for example would not have been a good port on Switch. Dragon Dogma 2 is another example. All this is, are companies trying to eke out a few extra bucks on their games. But the overall important picture is—that it shows parity between the Switch 2 and other platforms. As you can see the gaps are closing and many games are now starting to become day and date for Switch 2.

@MS7000 It’s a remake, it’s not stuck with the limitations of the N64. Why would he sleep with his hat on? lol. They couldn’t make changes to the model on the N64, so he would always have his hat on. They are likely to make some story changes as well, the glowing triforce there is just to establish his destiny. That doesn’t change the story, he’s sleeping, he doesn’t know about it.
