Re: Best Of 2021: Remember When People Thought Switch Would Fail?

Rygar

I remember there being hot takes from industry insiders primarily focused on the tech specs. The thought was Nintendo’s next console needed to be beefier than the PS or Xbox because of the Wii U’s failure. But I think that all missed the point because games were awesome on the Wii U, it was the LACK of games and poor marketing that did the Wii U in.

Re: Community: What Was Your First Ever Nintendo Game?

Rygar

NES bundle with R.O.B. the Robot and the Light Gun. We had Gyromite and Duck Hunt as our first games. I remember being so frustrated trying to operate the robot. It was impossible. Then we figured out we could use the 2nd controller in gyromite as a two player co-op and it was much more fun.

Re: Feature: Our Most Treasured Zelda Memories

I remember getting the original on NES. I think it was the first game I had that had a BATTERY in the cartridge. I played it over and over and would try attacking the levels in a different order each time. It did take some getting used to though, it was unlike any other game at the time...not a lot of open world games back on the NES in those days 😂

Re: Best Nintendo 64 Games

I think by this time I had a PS1 and couldn’t afford having two systems 😭 But, there’s something about this low-poly era...it doesn’t have the same appeal/nostalgia for me as the 8-bit & 16-bit days.

Re: Nintendo Expands Its Switch Online SNES And NES Service With Five More Titles

I remember playing Baseball Simulator 1.000 on the NES. I remember the gameplay being pretty basic with some wacky trick plays added into the mix. It WAS the first baseball game to have actual seasons and stat tracking on the NES (just before baseball stars, I think). Simulating games would take awhile, and it took so long there was a play-by-play anchorman reading out score updates after they happened. I wonder how the SNES version is?

Re: Soapbox: Is It Time For Game Rental Stores To Return?

Rygar

One of my favorite memories as a child: we were early adopters of the NES. Like, the very first month it came out in North America. We had a few games, but it was too expensive to purchase more and video stores weren’t renting games yet. My dad knew someone at his work that also had a NES and we’d trade games with each other. It was so exciting to see what game we’d get. I played Ghosts n Goblin and Mike Tysons Punchout through this exchange. Wonder if game exchanges could work in the future?

Same experience for me. 100k was a milestone. If you could reach it, it was a great run. If I focused, I’d score somewhere around 120k. Still remember my all time high score: 274,000...because I never came close to that number again 🤣

Re: Feature: Best NES Games

Rygar

Excuse me, but where is BASEBALL STARS???

I feel like this gem of a game keeps getting ignored. The NES version had a “franchise” mode where you could manage rosters, improve players, and draft rookies or sign veterans. It was brilliant. First of its kind on a console.

The NEO•GEO version that’s been available on the eShop has so little to do with the original. It wouldn’t be until the mid-90s when EA started to include similar features in their sports games. Baseball Stars was so far ahead of its time.

Re: Talking Point: Is Zelda An RPG, Or Not?

Rygar

I think of Zelda as a puzzle game. It’s a lot of solving the riddles of dungeons and patterns of enemies.

I think RPGs at their core are stat based battles and about making strategic decisions based on a sequence of events.
