The recent update made street pass plaza and apps within that very slow for me, but no actual crashes. When changing screens it was freezing for up to about ten seconds at a time, hoping the update reported here will fix that. Other Apps are fine.
EDIT:
Updated and everything working nicely in Street Plaza - seems to run slightly quicker than before now.
Excellent review, I will d/l this one as soon as i put some more credit on my 3DS. Not played this before and didn't know much about it, I'd assumed this was yet another Sonic style platformer. The change of pace from the other Sonic titles sounds welcome, as good as they are i find the camera too close for comfort when you're zooming around at high speed, leading to some frustration. This sounds ideal for a handheld game. When i think of friendly Metroid style games, on Sega, i think of stuff like the later Wonderboy games, especially Dragon's Trap or Monster World IV, if it's as good as those, this will be a real treat.
Definitely Crystal Warriors (GG) for me.
Will also update Balloon Fight, if thats an option.
Plenty of other stuff falls into the maybe category, will wait for reviews of those games that NL haven't got to yet.
Interested in Dillon's 2, but want to get a little further in first one, a stressful game but very satisfying when you make progress.
@Rafie great news about a release date for The Pinball Arcade on Wii U. I still prefer playing many of the tables in the Williams & Gottlieb collections on Wii to the ZP tables. However, i'm still interested in Star Wars pinball, i hope Zen have solved some of the problems/glitches apparent in Zen Pinball 2.
Shining Force (MD) on Wii VC, d/l'd & started a while ago (up to chapter 4), will finish it before starting GG version. Completed both SF games on MD back in the day, GG version will be new to me. Also a bit more NSMBU, want to finish main game, before getting New Super Luigi U And just because I like it (even though my backlog hates it) some Rockband 3 (Wii).
Excellent review, intersting and concise overview of the series to start. i only played Shining Force 1 & 2, which were amongst my favourite MD games so will start this one soon. Pink Floyd references always good too, Wish you were here is an amazing album
Pikmin 3 - The game that convinced me i need a Wii U. Been having a good time with my Wii U since so I don't mind the wait. The most excited i been to play a game since Mario 64.
The Mega Drive and GG/SMS versions play very simiar and the dificulty is pretty similar, all the gameplay modes are fully accounted for (not that there are that many) so not much difference. However, one reason i still love the Megadrive/Genesis version is the audio. OK so the GG and SMS sound chip are much weaker than the MD, but the GG and SMS versions just don't sound that good. The tunes in the Megadrive version are some of my favourite on the system and change organically (it's more complex than just speeding up as you get higher up the screen) throughout the game, a very clever arrangement. I've got Columns on the Megadrive collection (PS2), i was dissapointed with that version because the music spools from the CD and doesn't react at all to the gameplay.
Defenders of Oasis should be another good GG title. Will also probably get Tails' Adventure (GG). Will get the Luigi DLC later down the line, as i haven't got too far into NSMBU yet, really enjoyed what i played so far. Not sure about Mario Bros (NES) on Wii U. I really like the game, but i already have it in Yoshi's Island (3DS) and Super Mario All Stars/SMB3. Good discount on Super Little Acorns, looked like a good game too.
Only played the demo on 3ds. I was concerned when i saw the trailer in the wii u e-shop about the similarity to 3ds gameplay. i found the 3d a little uncomfortable on the 3ds, i've been fine with most other 3d views in 3ds games. However, when i tried switching the 3d off the gameplay didn't make much sense. I also found the jump/jet pac mechanic imprecise and quite annoying so i passed on the full game on 3ds and will not get this either.
I agree with the reviewer on this. I first played it as part of the 3DS ambassador scheme and although it's a nicely made game, which is fun it doesn't have the addictive spark of something like Tetris or Dr Mario. Yoshi came out on NES after both of those so i was rather dissapointed. Still, well worth 30p so i'll still pick it up (again).
I don't think this game is too bad, just takes a bit of practice to get used to the controls and gameplay. I've spent a bit of time with it and since i got it on sale, i think it was worth the money. I suppose it's a different story when you were buying this as a full priced NES cart back in the day. I kept dying loads at first, however, each time i play i get a little further. I got through to the 3rd area yesterday and haven't used save states. My biggest problem, like the reviewer, was slipping off ropes or ladders, but after some practice i was getting on OK; I found it helped using the wii-mote NES style, rather than the gamepad. I haven't got that far yet, but would agree the invisible key (3rd+ playthrough) idea sounds lame and frustrating, so will call it a day once i complete the second playthrough, at the rate i'm going this may take some time anyway.
Overall i was very happy with the games shown for Wii U. But if i had to pick one, it's Pikmin 3 - i wanted to play it ever since it was rumoured as a Wii title.
Yes, I'm dissapointed about the delay, but the 3DS has had fantastic support over the last year so delaying a game is not such a big deal. Still plan to get this when it does arrive as i've really enjoyed other games in this series.
Loved the first one, played it on Wii - so i'm one of the 5% who uses backward compatibility! Glad they are revisiting this franchise, i really enjoyed the characters, story and art design in the original game, the gameplay was superb too, I will definitely get BG&E2 if it arrives on Wii U.
@unrandomsam I've got Capcom Classics Collection Vol 1 for PS2, which includes Ghosts 'n' Goblins & Ghouls 'n' Ghosts. Both are classics, but very tough.
As an arcade conversion I think the NES maintains the challenge and is fairly faithful in terms of layout, the music is good too so i'm enjoying it.
I do agree that the VC arcade games that are on Wii should get on Wii U VC, and then hope new titles are added as well.
Good review, not that bothered about the difference between 6 or 7, i suppose it depends on your levels of patience, all of the reviews largely agree on the game's flaws. I also got this becasue of the discount for buying Super G'n'G, I'm enjoying this in short sessions, save states help greatly. I just don't have the patience, or skill, to get through all of this in one sitting. On the original verison i probably would never have completed level 4 onwards. Soundtrack (as with other games in this series) is brilliant. This is the only VC game so far i haven't enjoyed playing on the game-pad, the controls are a little finnicky at times so i didn't find it comfortable using the large d-pad. I got on a lot better with the the Classic controller. I note this review is labelled as Pal version, i take it this just refers to the region where it was played for the review, as everyone has got the American version (on Wii U & 3DS).
i think it's fair to say that Nintendo software sales would increase greatly if they did this. However, it would have serious consequences for Nintendo as a hardware manufacturer; as soon as exclusivity to these IPs is lost then the main reason for buying a Nintendo console will be gone for many people. I hope Nintendo continues to manufacture hardware and as long as they do it would seem to make sense to keep these games exclusive, just like Sony and MS do with their IPs.
I thought RB3 was a fantastic game. RB3 bought some major innovations with the keyboard controller (i have the Wii version) and more realistic instruments as an option, and the small refinements to the interface and new ways of challenging the player made it the best in the series for me.
They have only recently stopped adding new DLC. The DLC offering is already fantastic for this game but maybe i can start hoping for even more tracks to become available if they do add another game to the series.
i'll give spelunker a try whilst it's cheap. Don't think this was ever released as a cart in Europe, and i skipped it on Wii's vc. I have loads of versions of Tetris, was quite surprised how much i enjoyed the gameboy version on 3ds, suspend save made it very addictive chasing high scores. Will d/l new version as it's a good price. Already got Zombi U when it was on sale previously, excellent game.
Both Zeldas for me, I've never played them before so I'm very excited about them. Hmm... 50% off G'n'G is tempting as i did already d/l super G'n'G. However I already have G'n'G for 3DS, so if i get it at all it will only be whilst it's on sale. Maybe Toki Tori 2, quite tempting now it's on sale, it looks like a pretty good game. However, i wasn't a huge fan of the original (GBC version), the puzzles and controls really didn't 'click' with me and i found it a frustrating chore to,play.
They do say you can prove anything with statistics, but I'm really surprised by the lack of interest he seems to think there is in BC. BC is always a selling point to me. 3ds > ds > gba, wii u> wii >gamecube
Was really impressed by this when i first played it on my brand new Megadrive, but it hasn't aged well. Played it on various collections over the years since and it's alright for a quick gaming session, some of the animation is quite amusing. However, i wouldn't buy Altered Beast as a standalone game, added 3D or not. Of the four Sega '3D classics' so far this would be bottom of my list to get, if any of them ever get released outside of Japan.
Read a bit about the Xbox launch, pre & post the event, on BBC news. It's certainly too early to tell whether i really want one, i certainly won't be an early adopter of the machine. Microsoft seem to want to dilute the gaming focus to try and make the machine more than a gamming console, this would push me towards getting a new PC/laptop/tablet rather than X-box One as i expect i would be able to do most things on a PC the X-box One will offer, and then unless there are major changes, it would seem games will be continue to be released accross PC/X-box One/PS4 just like they are now. I read some comment (in BBC article) saying PC/X-box One/PS4 all use a similar processor, with Nintendo being the odd ones out. As someone who stuck with the Wii, backward compatibility to the 360 would have been a positive selling point to me, so i could catch up on games i missed, but i understand this is not possible due to the change in media storage. At the moment I'm perfectly happy with the Wii U and am looking forward to Nintendo catching up on it's slow start.
Shadow wars is fantastic, anyone who hasn't got it yet and likes this sort of game should get it. Have both of the kirby games for Wii Vc, both are good. Will probably try the 3ds demos as not planning on getting anything else.
Love the 3d classics version. This is a good port to. Pleased the 60hz version has been released in EU e-shop, makes a big difference for this type of game.
Still got Silly Putty on Amiga (Hit Squad re-release). Didn't realise Putty Squad was never released, i do rember reading positive reviews for it. I think it was scheduled as an A1200 game only, so as an A600 owner i wouldn't have been able to get it anyway.
@antonvaltaz i used to have the Speccy version as well, nice game but too hard. Speccy verison and some other 8-bit versions were based on the arcade game so only had about 16 rooms. This NES version has 50 rooms and an abundance of secrets to uncover. I think it's a fantastic game and had no trouble at all with the controls, up to jump is an understandable compromise and i quickly adapted to it. The save states are a big help because that continue code (EU also got US version) doesn't retain any fireballs/items picked up, so if you're strategy to escape a room relies on you having a couple of fireballs in hand, then you could be a bit stuck or needing to find a new way out. I spent a couple of hours on it and am only up to about the 9th room.
Atari/Atarisoft produced quite a few good home versions of Pacman accross several 8-bit platforms, unfortuantely, nearly everyone remembers the rushed and poor 2600 conversion. I'd agree the NES is a good version, the only reason i didn't get it on Wii U was i already have NES and GB versions on 3DS. As others have said, Namco should release Pacman (arcade) or Pacman Championship Edition on Wii U e-shop.
Wow, i want all of those VC (Wii U & 3DS) games. i have SMB2 many times already but i love the game and this will be awesome on the gamepad. Already have Runner 2, but a discount is nice for anyone who hasn't picked it up yet, it's a fantastic game. Will wait for a review on Starship Damrey.
@peach64, @darrellthej. Will keep up the hope that these will get released outside of Japan. Agree that Sonic has the best chance of these '3d classics' style games of getting released. Would be very interested in the Space Harrier, and Super Hang on one to.
And of course more GG games on e-shop
Another game we probably won't see. Sorry about the negativity, still dissapointed about Sega's lack of GG support in the e-shop (outside of Japan) and expect these '3D classics' will remain exclusive to Japan as well.
I quite enjoyed this, and appreciated getting it through the ambassador scheme, and again on the Famicom Anniversary promotion. The quick action and short rounds make it ideal for short play sessions. The review seems to suggest the levels appear in a random order. I thought each level had a pre-determined set of enemies always set at the same start points?
I think this is way better than Picross-e or it's sequel in terms of content and value for money. It has loads more puzzles (296 in total), puzzles up to 25*20 in size, and then the Mario theme is quite charming. Controls are good too, loving playing this on the gamepad.
Will be updating Wrecking Crew (why no voting button?). Solomon's Key, maybe. I could never get very far into it so the save states might help. I love the 3DClassics version of Xevious so i'm tempted to get this, but I'm worried this will be a really inferior port, 60Hz would definitely improve this.
I really enjoyed playing this again when i got it on the 3DS ambassador scheme. Would give this a 6/10 as its got a few faults, but it's still a good port of the arcade game and a fun game. Looking forward to DK for 30p later this year
I primarily play games in single player mode, however, I still got a lot of enjoyment out of Nintendo Land as it had plenty of depth to each of the mini-games, and then occassional multi-player play was a nice bonus.
i will wait for reviews to see if single-player mode is any good.
@sonicfan1373 [post #29] I think that's a good idea, there are already games on E-shop being sold in a similar way e.g. d/l version of Tank! Tank! Tank!, Zen Pinball. i certianly would not pay full-price for G&W as a few of the modes sound like they would not appeal to me - Some of the drawings on Miiverse are amazing, so i bet some people will love the Artwork modes, even if it has no appeal to me.
Glad i got this free on the ambassador scheme. I had a couple of play sessions on it and just couldn't get into it. I thought the worst thing about the game was the dodgy collision detection, to often you will just slip through the edges of moving platforms. I've still yet to update to the full version, but save states for this would seem useless as all levels are selectable from the title screen anyway. imo it was the weakest of the ambassador titles.
Xevious (NES) would probably be a little dissapointing after playing the excellent 3DClassics version. I already have VC copies of Mega Man (3DS), Balloon Fight (Wii U & 3DS) and Super Mario Bros (3DS (and several non-VC versions too)) Not interested in Street Fighter II. So that leaves A Link to the Past (will get, even though i have the original SNES cart) and Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts (never tried this before depite being a big fan of the Megadrive version)

I'd agree the NES is a good version, the only reason i didn't get it on Wii U was i already have NES and GB versions on 3DS.
As others have said, Namco should release Pacman (arcade) or Pacman Championship Edition on Wii U e-shop.
Re: Nintendo Download: 16th May (Europe)
Wow, i want all of those VC (Wii U & 3DS) games. i have SMB2 many times already but i love the game and this will be awesome on the gamepad.
Already have Runner 2, but a discount is nice for anyone who hasn't picked it up yet, it's a fantastic game.
Will wait for a review on Starship Damrey.
Re: 3D Sonic The Hedgehog Spinning Onto The Japanese 3DS eShop Next Week
@peach64, @darrellthej. Will keep up the hope that these will get released outside of Japan. Agree that Sonic has the best chance of these '3d classics' style games of getting released. Would be very interested in the Space Harrier, and Super Hang on one to.
And of course more GG games on e-shop
Re: 3D Sonic The Hedgehog Spinning Onto The Japanese 3DS eShop Next Week
Another game we probably won't see.
Sorry about the negativity, still dissapointed about Sega's lack of GG support in the e-shop (outside of Japan) and expect these '3D classics' will remain exclusive to Japan as well.
Re: Review: Balloon Fight (3DS eShop / NES)
I quite enjoyed this, and appreciated getting it through the ambassador scheme, and again on the Famicom Anniversary promotion.
The quick action and short rounds make it ideal for short play sessions.
The review seems to suggest the levels appear in a random order. I thought each level had a pre-determined set of enemies always set at the same start points?
Re: Review: Mario's Super Picross (Wii U eShop / Super Nintendo)
I think this is way better than Picross-e or it's sequel in terms of content and value for money. It has loads more puzzles (296 in total), puzzles up to 25*20 in size, and then the Mario theme is quite charming. Controls are good too, loving playing this on the gamepad.
Re: Nintendo Download: 9th May 2013 (Europe)
Will be updating Wrecking Crew (why no voting button?).
Solomon's Key, maybe. I could never get very far into it so the save states might help.
I love the 3DClassics version of Xevious so i'm tempted to get this, but I'm worried this will be a really inferior port, 60Hz would definitely improve this.
Re: Review: Donkey Kong Jr. (Wii U eShop / NES)
I really enjoyed playing this again when i got it on the 3DS ambassador scheme. Would give this a 6/10 as its got a few faults, but it's still a good port of the arcade game and a fun game.
Looking forward to DK for 30p later this year
Re: Game & Wario Gets Crazy in Europe on 28th June
Re: Review: Ice Climber (Wii U eShop / NES)
Glad i got this free on the ambassador scheme. I had a couple of play sessions on it and just couldn't get into it. I thought the worst thing about the game was the dodgy collision detection, to often you will just slip through the edges of moving platforms. I've still yet to update to the full version, but save states for this would seem useless as all levels are selectable from the title screen anyway. imo it was the weakest of the ambassador titles.
Re: UK Retro Gaming Event Gathers Steam Ahead Of May Launch
Cool!
Re: Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D's Beastly Block Size Revealed
I've got a 16GB card, which is about a 1/3 full of mp3s. I'm down to my last 50,000 blocks, so i'm not too worried... yet.
Re: New Wii U Virtual Console Titles Confirmed By Nintendo UK
Xevious (NES) would probably be a little dissapointing after playing the excellent 3DClassics version.
I already have VC copies of Mega Man (3DS), Balloon Fight (Wii U & 3DS) and Super Mario Bros (3DS (and several non-VC versions too))
Not interested in Street Fighter II.
So that leaves A Link to the Past (will get, even though i have the original SNES cart) and Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts (never tried this before depite being a big fan of the Megadrive version)
Re: Hands On: Seeing The World in Wii U Panorama View
Several U games already use the gamepad in a much more creative and fun way. i thought this was very dull and not worth paying for.
