Re: Guitar Hero 7 Was in Development With a Six-Stringed Guitar

RetrogamerFan

I got lots of fun with the series so i would be interested in a new release, but won't lose any sleep over it if it doesn't happen. I don't really agree that the releases were getting worse - at least in terms of the quality of each game. I quite enjoyed some of the new challenges introduced in later games. i thought the Keyboard for RB3 was a fantastic addition.
About the possible GH7 - if they were really struggling with the tracklist then i would agree it is defnintely time to give up with the series. There are still loads of songs out there i'd love to play on GH/RB, but i suppose its down to licensing costs and agreement of the artists/bands which will prevent a lot of tracks ever appearing.

Re: Nintendo Download: 6th December 2012 (Europe)

RetrogamerFan

Wario Land 3!!
Will also try out some more of those '3D machine' videos. Not usually my kind of thing but I thought the first one was great. I loved the art style it was like a 1920s/30s film but with a modern twist, and pretty funny too. You could see obvious influences like Frankenstein, King Kong and then other references to Metropolis - the ctiyscape and the female character the assistant makes with the machine.
Will get around to downloading the Denpa Men demo before i try the game.

Re: Review: Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward (3DS)

RetrogamerFan

Still sounds like a good game. This second review places less importance on playing the first game in the series, which makes me more likely to pick up this game. I was considering tracking down a copy of the original, as the original reviewer strongly reccomended playing both this and 999 beforehand.
In my unscientific sample of 1 (i've only got 1 import game to test) - I've found out my USA copy of New Super Mario Bros, won't work in my 3DS so i won't be getting any import titles for my 3DS. I was able to try out the NSMB cart in an old DS Lite and it does still work, i'm assuming region lockout has been added to 3DS.

Re: Review: Game Party Champions (Wii U)

RetrogamerFan

Oh dear, although i'm not surprised. The sad fact is it'll probably sell; the Wii got at least three (almost identical) versions of Game Party if i remeber correctly so enough people must've bought it.
I see this is by someone called Phosphor games, the Wii versions were by Farsight, who when they weren't making game party did the fantastic Gottlieb and Williams Pinball collections. When i eventually get a Wii U, will be looking out for The Pinball Arcade.

Re: Review: Bloons TD 4 (DSiWare)

RetrogamerFan

Wow, that's bad. Wonder how close this was to getting a 1, after all the review makes it sound like it so broken/laggy to render it completely unplayable, and then there are many better options for this type of game at (or around) the same price, already on the DSIware/e-shop services. Starship Patrol/Defense is a great example of this type of game.

Re: Review: PIX3D (3DS eShop)

RetrogamerFan

Hmm.. still on the fence about this, i was completely baffled by the video on the 3DS shop. This review is pretty helpful, at least i understand what the game is about.

Re: Review: Pac-Man (3DS eShop / NES)

RetrogamerFan

I already have Pacman (3DSVC/GB) and Pacman & Galaga Dimnensions (3DS), (Pacman Championship Edition is brilliant). I like the GB version but always use the zoomed out view, hated the scrolling in the close-in view, it totally messes up the gameplay.

Re: Review: 3D MahJongg (3DS eShop)

RetrogamerFan

Good, comprehensive review.
Would be interested in this if it gets released in Europe. I like Mahjong Solitaire games and already have several versions. On Nintendo systems I've got Shanghai II: Dragon;s Eye on the Wii VC/MD, which is good for the Dragon's Eye variant, which i've never seen on another Mah Jong Solitaire game. I've also got the 42-in-1 Classics DS cart and the DSi version simply called Mah Jong, i'll probably delete this (if this becomes avialable) so i can free up space for other DSIware.
I'm quite keen to try this because of the Rivers/Shisen variation, this usually gets missed out of most Mahjong solitaire titles and adds an extra bit of challenge and variety to the title.

Re: Nintendo Provides Final Wii U Launch Line-Up for Europe

RetrogamerFan

Really good choice of games. I've not pre-ordered a Wii-u as I need to sort out some decent internet access before i get one. The access i got is (just about) OK for d/loading 3DS/Wii VC/3DSware etc games, but dowlnloading a large system update, or presumably much bigger Wii U shop games would be a problem. Will stick with my trusty old Wii and 3DS for a while, probably till Pikmin 3 arrives.

Re: Review: Fallblox (3DS eShop)

RetrogamerFan

Played for just over an hour and first impressions are really good, the puzzles work very differently to Pullblox so it's definitely worth playing even if you already have that, or even if you don't. Even some of the tutorial puzzles (i haven't finished them all yet) made me think quite a bit. I did the first 'ideas' puzzle (light bulb design) from Papa Blocks, that had me stumped for a while, although the bit that falls off the puzzle turned out to be a big clue...

Re: Wii Version Of PES 2013 Looks Rather Familiar

RetrogamerFan

At least Konami aren't charging full price for this. Some of the updates on these yearly games aren't very extensive so i'm sure there must be people who only update every couple of years, in which case picking this up at budget price wouldn't be so bad. However, for those that do update every year this is a complete rip-off.

Re: Nintendo Download: 15th November 2012 (Europe)

RetrogamerFan

Really looking forward to Fallblox. I got 25 hours plus out of Pullblox and didn't even finish the game - completed enough to unlock all the studio elements but didn't get much further. I spent a long time playing user-created levels and desigining a few myself. If this has a similar amount of content i'd be more than happy with the price.
Already have Ninja Gaiden on SMS so may get NES version later down the line.

Re: Review: Johnny Hotshot (3DS eShop)

RetrogamerFan

@Phil Entertaining review, the frustration and anger this game caused you comes accross really well.
I suppose this time last year people were concerned about the quantity of releases on E-shop, i'd prefer quality over quantity any day. Anyway i've got my fingers crossed for Crashmo/Fallblox, really enjoyed Pullblox.

Re: Review: Paper Mario: Sticker Star (3DS)

RetrogamerFan

I don't mind a bit of familiarity when the series is as good as this. I suppose they might have been stung by the criticism of the Wii version, as it was quite different to the other Paper Mario games. I enjoyed the Wii version, but am enjoying the N64 one more (so far - rescued 4 star spirits), which i'm currently playing on Wii VC. Not played thousnd year door, but would like to some day.

Re: The Pinball Arcade Set for Wii U Launch Window Release

RetrogamerFan

I spent loads of time playing the Williams & Gottlieb Pinball collections on Wii so this would be right at the top of my list of games to get on Wii U, when i pick one up.
I'm not sure if Pinball Arcade would be so great on 3DS. Clearly the developers would have to make compromises to get the game running at all, and then i just have a personal preference for playing this sort of thing on a big screen - i found Zen Pinball quite awkward with the cramped display and for me it spoilt an otherwise excellent game, I could see Pinball Arcade having similar issues if it ever got to 3DS.

Re: Review: Back To Nature (WiiWare)

RetrogamerFan

Saw the video for this on the e-shop new realeases last week and wondered what was going on - well now i know...
Hadn't heard of flashlight/discolight before so just read the reviews, who would want to waste their DSI/3DS system blocks for that rubbish, it's bad enough having to delete/re-download good games becuase of the DSIware storage problem. Curious to see if there are any reviews of it on E-shop, who would use/play those for an hour, if there are any it must be the developer...

Re: Talking Point: The Challenges When Writing About Games

RetrogamerFan

Really interesting article. I tend to read reviews from quite a few sources on the net (and in old-fashioned print - hence my avatar). I'm sure the accusation of bias is thrown around a lot more than it should be. A review is just someone's opinion and so may be at odds with someone else. It's dificult to prove someone has been unduly influenced or even bribed to give a good review, most times it's just down to the fact that a game appealed to the reviewer but lots of others didn't like it. If a review site/magazine does give good reviews just because they get a few freebies from a publisher, i would trust most readers would see through this pretty quickly and the site/magazine would lose hits/readers pretty quickly, so i don't think it happens very often. An example i remember was an Amiga magazine giving a glowing review to the Rise of the Robots - credibilty of the magazine after that review = zero.

Re: The Famicom's Biggest Rival Is 25 Years Old

RetrogamerFan

I'm pretty sure the PC engine (or any of it's variations) was never officially released in the UK or Europe. I remember seeing adverts for it through grey-importers and reading reviews for the games in the Mean Machine Guide to Consoles series. I really wanted one for a while until Sega confirmed the Megadrive was going to be launched in the UK.
It's great finally being able to play some of the games on the Wii's VC.

Re: Nintendo Download: 1st November 2012 (Europe)

RetrogamerFan

Gradius is a pretty good shooter, surprised they have gone for the NES version instead of the GB version. I played the GB version back in the day and seem to remember really enjoying it.
Is the price (for Gradius) correct (shown as £4.59, I thought it would be £4.49?)

Re: Nintendo Download: 25th October 2012 (Europe)

RetrogamerFan

Good offer on Let's Golf, i'd held off getting it before cos i've already got several golf games, but at that price it's definitely worth a go.
Also interested in Mighty Bomb Jack, even though i know it's not supposed to be as good as the original Bomb Jack.

Re: Review: Boulder Dash-XL 3D (3DS)

RetrogamerFan

Good review, will pick this up if i see it available. Played many Boulderdash variants back in the day on the ZX Spectrum like Rockford (an official conversion of the Arcadia coin-op) and Riptoff (as it's name suggests an unlicenced Boulderdash clone, but an excellent game nonetheless). Wondering if the GB version would ever get released on the 3DS VC?

Re: Review: Picross E (3DS eShop)

RetrogamerFan

Good review, I think 8 is a very fair score for this, taking into account the price. I've got about ten each of the free and Normal puzzles left to do, and then the 15 Extra puzzles, after about 8 hours play. I was slightly dissapointed there are no bigger puzzles than 15*15, but still enjoyed what is there. Agree with the final summing up in the review, i would also like to see a fully featured retail release too.

Re: Nintendo Download: 13th September 2012 (Europe)

RetrogamerFan

I'll be updating Zelda II.
Interested in the demo too, the review pointed out some very serious flaws in the game, but the concept looks good and i quite liked the look of the game. I like puzzle games and this one looks like it could have similarities to Crushed, which i really enjoyed. If the developers have fixed the game during localisation, it could still be interesting... or is that too much to hope for

Re: Review: CRUSH3D (3DS)

RetrogamerFan

Recently started playing this and i'm about halfway through the game (just started playing the fairground levels).
Fantastic game, I love the fiendish level dsign in this game, and the fact that (aside from trophy mode) you can take as much time as you like to figure out the levels. Music is kind of unusual, being more like a sound-scape, rather than a traditional soundtrack, but really adds atmosphere to the game. Unlocking dressing gowns is a little strange, but I always try to figure out how to get the artwork from each level. One of the best 3DS titles i've played.

Re: Nintendo Download: 23rd August 2012 (Europe)

RetrogamerFan

Will be updating the two ambassador games, these were two of my favourites from the NES ambassador games. I'm perfectly happy with the basic versions of these two, but it will be nice to have the updated versions, - I'm really waiting for Zelda II to be updated.
Will also try the Batman demo. I really enjoyed Lego Star Wars (Wii).

Re: Review: 90's Pool (DSiWare)

RetrogamerFan

Just seen the video for this, following it's recent release in Europe, the video really reminds me of (Team 17) Arcade Pool on the Amiga. I used to really like that game so i was considering getting this. Bit worried about the part in the review saying the stylus input gets a bit messed up, resulting in shots being taken at the wrong time... Might still try for 200 points.

Re: Feature: Our Favourite Super Mario Games

RetrogamerFan

Very difficult to pick just one title, i went for Super Mario 64, it was incredible the first time i played this on my brand new N64. For me none of the Mario games since have had quite the same impact, but are superb games nonetheless.
My other favourites are Super Mario World (SNES), Super Mario Bros 2, and 3 NES/SNES), and Super Mario Land (GB) - again this was a superb launch title, which i still really enjoy today.

Re: Nintendo Download: 16th August 2012 (Europe)

Mystical Ninja (GB). Haven't played many of this series of games, but i loved the N64 Mystical Ninja game (still have the original cartridge), some of the characters in that were very odd, but it was a good fun game.

I'll probably get NSMB2, definitely as a retail as i'm sure it will be easy to find at a cheaper price. Already have the non-deluxe version of freaky forms, which was OK and enough for me.

Re: This is Why New Little King's Story Isn't on Wii

RetrogamerFan

Hope the sequel turns out good and even sells well, even though i don't have a Vita. If it bombs then there's probably no chance of it getting converted to other machines.
Loved the original LKS, one of my favourite games of all time and imo the best Wii game.

Re: Columns Coming to 3DS Virtual Console with Local Multiplayer

RetrogamerFan

Would get this if it came to Europe even though I've got both the Megadrive and Master System versions already. I don't find a lot of difference between the MD & SMS versions in the gameplay stakes, but the music on the Megadrive version is brilliant, whereas i find the SMS music rather grating and too high pitched. The megadrive music changes organically depending on how you are doing in the game (more than just speeding up as you approach the top). I just don't find it the same on the MD colleciton i have on PS2, this just spools music from the CD so doesn't react at all to your progress in the game.

Really glad Sega are including features like local co-op. I wish Nintendo could sort this out for the GB/GBC games. Link-up Tetris, Qix, Golf, King of the Zoo were all awesome back in the day.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Life Presents... Our Freakyforms

RetrogamerFan

Sorry, if this has been covered elsewhere, when i last went on E-shop on Thursday (26 July) Freaky Forms wanted to do an update, it was quite large (nearly 400 blocks) and my connection was awfully slow, took ages to d/l the two smaller games i wanted, after yet another system update so didn't get time for this, and still not had another chance to go on-line...

Did anyone d/l the Freaky Forms update? Is it just another one of those SD card compatability updates, or is there any noticeable update/additional content?

@NL_StaffLiking the formees, haven't put much time on this one yet so will add them to my collection.

Edit: OK seen answer about update. It's to maintain compatability between d'l formees from the original game and the new retial release.

Re: Infinite Interactive Hint at More Puzzle Quest

RetrogamerFan

As long as it's a follow-up to Puzzle quest, not Puzzle Kingdoms, i'd be interested (i have Puzzle Quest and Puzzle Kingdoms both on Wii). PK was a big dissapointment after the first Puzzle Quest game. I'd estimate i spent 60-70+ hours on the first one. PK just got easier and easier as it went on becuase you got so overwpowered and the enemies hardly changed throughout. The only chalenge was the very last temple/shrine level - even that was a lot easier than defeating Lord Bane.
