@BulkSlash While the line itself was shocking for its time, what made that scene work was seeing Putnam literally carried out the door by cops. Later, they paid it off further by having three truckers beat up Putnam.
A lot of people hated this movie, but I really don't understand why. The bulk of the film has nothing to do with video games; that's just how it was marketed. Fred Savage's character was trying to prevent his autistic brother from being committed, and the games were to prove how smart he really was. There was lots of comedy and heart in the film, plus a surprise twist for why Jimmy himself (the younger brother) was so determined to reach California.
I played "Duck Hunt" like crazy as a kid, and actually got up to Level 26 once...but I usually sat close to the TV. My aim was never very good from far away.
"Super Mario Bros." should win, no contest. If not for that game's success, we wouldn't have the industry as it is today. Every title that came after it owes a debt to its legacy.
@shani Well, I'm on a limited budget, so spending $300 for the Wii-U is a challenge anyway. I'm still trying to replace my HDTV, which was stolen over a year ago. I'll probably have to save up for both.
I found out about this when I was probably about 12 years old, and I remember feeling both amazed yet angry at the same time. I was a hardcore Mario addict in those days, and the fact I couldn't beat the first game without warping or dying drove me nuts. Today, its still quite a challenge, but I can reach my goal in about 45 minutes when I focus.
I wanted to be a Game Play Counselor so badly as a kid, and was pissed when they cancelled the service. Internet's definitely easier, but there's no personal interaction, 1-on-1. I have a very literal mind, and sometimes, text alone isn't much help. I've even struggled with strategy guides in the past, because they didn't take each step separately.
I first played the original "Mega Man" when I was about ten years old, and to this day - 24 years later - I still can't beat the Yellow Devil without using the Electric Pause trick.
I never heard of Mr. Baer until 3 or 4 years ago, when my friend Robert showed me a DVD of the "Video Games Live" concert. Ralph came on stage at one point, to play his original "Black Box" machine against a ten-year-old.
I didn't see it live last night, just the brief recap while waiting for "Castle" to start. But wow...that was both funny and amazing! I love how they included Luigi and Toad, and would be thrilled to hear what Mr. Miyamoto or Charles Martinet have to say about it.
The only reason I'd want a Power Glove now, is if I was dressing like Captain N for Halloween or a gaming convention. That LED design looks cool, but $150 is fairly high...especially since there's two different sizes of the glove.
The shortest "regular play" path I know to beating the game is to finish World 1 normally, then access the Star Road from the Ghost House by the lower-right part of the lake. After that, its just a matter of beating a few stages of the Star World, until you reach the lower-right point which leads to Bowser's front door.
The only games I got heavily into with the 'Cube were the first two "Metroid Prime" entries, and "Spider-Man 2". "The Wind Waker" was crap; I only reserved it at the time to get the Master Quest disc for "Ocarina of Time". I also liked "Mega Man Anniversary Collection", but it just wasn't the same as having the old carts.
@Artwark I don't recall ever hating this game, though it was very difficult to finish the first time (Water Temple, anyone?). By contrast, "Majora's Mask" infuriates me, because of the constant time-travel gimmick.
@sinalefa Kerri Hoskins played Sonya in "Mortal Kombat 3". She replaced Elisabeth Malecki, who portrayed the character in the first two games, after the latter lost a suit against Midway over royalties.
This is definitely still a classic; I bought my current copy for $20, from a retro-themed store about 5 years ago. The shell had dirt and stickers all over it, but the label was nice and clean. I took the whole thing apart, cleaned the circuit board, scrubbed the case parts with Comet and water, then reassembled everything. Its run perfectly ever since.
@EdwardCORE Its very simple, really. Nintendo saves a ton of money by simply releasing SD emulations, versus spending tons of capital to research and adapt obsolete hardware. If they don't believe they'll make a sizeable profit, they won't bother. It sucks, but that's the nature of most businesses today.
I currently have a Genesis cartridge of "Aladdin", and it sucks compared to the SNES. The graphics look more rushed, the music is muffled, and the difficulty is insane. The SNES version is no cakewalk, but its developers struck a better balance on all counts.
Even though its equal parts fun and frustrating, I still love the original "Double Dragon" on the NES. The second game was arguably better, while the third sucked due to its massive difficulty level. "Double Dragon Advance" was a cool update for the GBA several years ago, while "Super Double Dragon" on the SNES is great. Avoid "Double Dragon V" though, unless you're a fan of the 1990s carton series.
Never heard the name, nor did I ever suspect those pieces of artwork were painted. I always assumed some studio head had them drawn with markers or colored pencils...seriously. Since I never knew Mr. Martin, I can only say I hope he's in heaven with God now, and that his family's being comforted in every way.
I have this on DVD, and yes its a little corny, but still works. I love the fact that Haley's about as "anti-feminine" as you can get, without being mean. Corey tries scaring her with a skull mask at one point, only to be decked in the head for his trouble. =) Watch the profanity please — TBD
Let's be honest, shall we? The main reason the original Game Boy became a success at all was because it was bundled with "Tetris". Computer nerds who only knew the game from their desktops leaped at the chance to take it on the road, while the rest of us didn't even know it existed until the NES port was released in November of 1989.
I had this system as a kid, and yes, I loved "Tetris"...but that was about it. No other game held my interest, because of the blurry graphics and screen that only looked good when tilted toward a light source.
For several years, I thought the Mega Drive was a completely different console from the Genesis, because I had no reason to think products had multiple names for different parts of the world. The main games I played on the console were all four "Sonic" titles and the "Streets of Rage" series. I was really surprised when "Mega Man: The Wily Wars" came out for the Sega Channel.
@GAMERGRAFX Well, for starters, high-quality labels for all six NES "Mega Man" games would be nice, plus one for "The Adventure of Link". I have a self-made vector file of the latter's logo; if you want it, PM me.
I checked out the GamerGrafx site, and was struck by how little is actually offered in their replacement label section for original NES games. So many carts are in terrible shape these days, and labels are desperately needed for the most abused copies.
Also, I'm amused at the section of TV and film labels, but why would anyone want something like that, for an NES game that doesn't exist? For example, there's one for "The Breakfast Club"...seriously.
@JoostinOnline Ultimately, this world would be much better off without people who constantly play the victim card, when its painfully obvious no harmful intent ever existed.
The guy who wrote that article is an idiot. While some traits are similar to different cultures, there's no direct correlation with any of them in the "Zelda" series, that I'm aware of. Also, one of the so-called "bad guys" (Nabooru) turns out to be the Sage of Spirit, helping Link defeat Ganondorf. Darunia also has brown skin, and remains an aide and "sworn brother" to Link through the whole game...funny how the author forgot about that.
The whole sexism bit is crap, too. Like it or not, most women are physically smaller and weaker than most men. We were designed to be their protectors, not abusers. Radical feminists always link (or it it Link?) dominance with oppression. =(
@kkslider5552000 "Ocarina of Time" is still the best in the series for me. "Majora's Mask" was insanely repetitive, and I still can't get past grabbing the fishing rod in "Twilight Princess". I haven't played "Skyward Sword" yet, and the animation style for "Wind Waker" remains insulting.
I bought a backlit 101 SP for $60 a few months ago, but the shell is scratched up. If anyone's interested, the Gaming Generations website sells replacements.
