Super Mario World is a big game — so big it put other 2D platformers to shame when it launched alongside the shiny new SNES back in the early '90s.
However, while many of us will have happy memories of wasting countless hours finding all those levels and secret routes, speedrunner linkdeadx2 has taken a different approach and licked the game in an amazing 9 minutes, 51 seconds.
You can view the incredible performance below, and keep in mind this is an "any percentage run", which means it's not a requirement to find everything in the game. It's also worth noting that this speedrunner uses the "cloud" glitch to achieve the time. Amazingly, the runners-up are on 09:51.12 and 09:51.69 — which proves how much those vital fractions of a second count.

Never underestimate speedrunners. Whenever you think it can't go faster, they just do it. Damn, that's awesome!
This kind of stuff is just brilliant to watch.
What I really want to see with all these games however is the best ever speedrun without using any glitches, bugs or tool assists etc.
Might go look for that online now...
Edit: Does anyone know what the official world record is using zero glitches or tool assists and where I can actually find footage of it if there is any...?
Does anyone have the link to the YouTube video? I can't view Flash videos on my iPad. I thought most people used HTML5 these days.
EDIT: Ah, is the video from Twitch? That might explain it, and why I can't find a YouTube video of it. I'll have to jump to my PC then.
I can beat the game in 16 minutes and I don't have to rely on glitches to do it.
Get to the Star Road, beat those levels so that you can access Bowser's Castle, and there you go. 16 minutes. No deaths. No cheating.
I never really understood the point of speed runs. It pretty much eliminates the fun of experiencing a game in its entirety. I guess if it satisfies that craving of beating a game in the quickest way possible, but to me it defeats the purpose of the game.
Cannot wait to see a speed run for Meme Run
@Kirk http://deanyd.net/smw/index.php?title=Leaderboards Here are the leaderboards for multiple categories. I believe Low% is glitchless.
@OMGILikeTurtlez It adds competition to the game, and it's fun in its way. I speedran I wanna be the guy months ago (warpless, my PB is something like 35 minutes) and I found it fun.
It's pretty ridiculous how fast speedrunners can complete games. But that's what makes them so fun to watch.
@OMGILikeTurtlez
Speedrunners do it AFTER they are done fully experiencing the game the normal way. So, they aren't missing anything.
@Yiffy
I thought "Low%" just meant it doesn't require you completing all the levels and finding all the items or whatever but not necessarily without using any glitches/bugs or tool assists.
It's actually really convoluted to figure out what is what and just find a clean run of the game from start to end, taking whatever shortcuts and skipping whatever parts, AS LONG AS it's done with using glitches/bugs or tool assists.
A bit sad that it's SO hard just to find one nice video of someone legitimately playing through the game in the fastest time possible.
I personally love watching Sethbling, even though he is not the first in speedrunning Super Mario World, he sure makes it entertaining.
@Kirk
A good SMW time before reserve item glitches became a thing:

@Greenalink
Def looks a bit more legit
Cheers.
The shortest "regular play" path I know to beating the game is to finish World 1 normally, then access the Star Road from the Ghost House by the lower-right part of the lake. After that, its just a matter of beating a few stages of the Star World, until you reach the lower-right point which leads to Bowser's front door.
