Sometimes it pays to look for clues and information on official Nintendo game pages published for the Japanese market. Some eagle-eyed Mario Maker fans over on NeoGaf have been looking around the Japanese website for the game and found some interesting pointers on potential content.
For starters, as you can see in the graphic below Yoshi is stood rather prominently, suggesting the faithful companion may be included in the title.
Secondly, looking at the panning anniversary graphic on this page has some fans fantasizing about the potential presence of Kuribo's Shoe as an item, as it's included (along with Yoshi and many other features) as part of the celebratory image. That's a lot more speculative (though both instances are speculative) than the suggestion of Yoshi being included, admittedly.
In any case, Yoshi seems highly likely as an inclusion. Of course, the nature of the game should suggest that all items and characters will be featured across the four visual styles confirmed for the game - Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World and New Super Mario Bros. U. Yoshi would be a minor headache on that score, as would items such as Kuribo's shoe. Perhaps these considerations - and a tie-in with the 30th Anniversary - are part of the reasoning for this one now targeting September, following previous plans for it to arrive in the first half of 2015.
How much would you like Yoshi to be part of Mario Maker, and even Kuribo's shoe? Neither is confirmed, but lt us know in the comments regardless.

Many stages will be made in which Yoshi must be sacrificed.
@SetupDisk Let us pray for all the yoshi's that are going to be sacrificed once this game hits stores.
I wonder if you'll be able to save stages and play them in sequence ? If there's a top rated list of created stages we could download , save, and play in an order we set up ourselves, that would be great!
I'll hold off on buying a Wii-U until "Mario Maker" comes out. That looks to be very interesting, for sure.
@ShoryukenKid they confirmed that feature in the last direct
You'll probably need any 1 of the 5 Yoshi amiibo to unlock Yoshi though.
On the bright side - Kuribo shoe amiibo confirmed!
I really hope they have some level of curation for levels. I can only imagine trying to wade through all the "hardest level evah!" designs to find the creative and decent ones.
@BLPs That shoe just happens to be the one power up that you only get in that level and you can't carry with you. It's like in Mario 64 where you get to use the metal and vanish caps at the same time. It's like seeing a unicorn in the wild. Majestic.
@SetupDisk Companion cube style!
Man color me interested. I never really cared for this tittle, but by including yoshi, the design be can much more complex due to multiple abilities Yoshi has.
But how is this going to work though? Yoshi in Super Mario World has different abilities than Yoshi is Super Mario Bro U. Is there going to be 2 different versions of yoshi then?
If Yoshi will really be in the game, I will include him in EACH stage I make, even if that means tucking him away secretly in a corner somewhere.
@ShoryukenKid - You can see "Worlds" save at the 11:24 mark of the April 1 Ninnted Direct. You have to be VERY quick though b/c you can't see it at 11:23 or 11:32, it is on screen for EXACTLY 1 second and then 2 seconds more after that. Looks like each "World" is limited to 4 stages though.

Hope the game gets as much elements as it can.
It takes inspiration from all the 2D Mario games to date, so if the difference between the gamestyles would be purely graphical, it would be rather shallow... but it's also problematic; I mean, some of the stuff found in later games (different flying power-ups, Yoshi, Mario being able to lean on walls when jumping, etc.) isn't present in the original Super Mario Bros., so how are they going to reconcile all of it?
It would be hard to do it well, but if they do, the potential for clever level design would be huge...
I'd recommend watching this video if you want to learn a LOT of stuff that's very likely to be in this game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5phyWRMDjw
It's by far the best analysis of the Mario Maker footage that I've seen.
This game just keeps getting better and better, I'm ALL FOR YOSHI!
all i need left is Luigi to be playable.
Yeah adding Yoshi is good, if they really are all-out for this they'll included the cape, the boomerang and the frog suit in the game too alongside the veggies from Super Mario Bros. 2 as well. I mean c'mon they did it for Super Mario Advance 4, no reason they couldn't do it here.
Honestly, I think EVERYTHING from 2D Marios should be available. It would not be too much effort to make 8-bit versions of stuff like Yoshi, Penguin Suit, Whatever....
This game just keeps looking better and better...on an unrelated note, what do you guys think the chances of getting some SMB2 representation in this are?
@Kirk
Thorough analysis. Good video. Thanks for the link.
BTW, the different Mario games had different physics (for example, the NSMB games have floatier jumps than the original SMB.), so I wonder how are they going to adress that? Are they going to give all the different graphic styles a single, unified physics engine?
This game is shaping to be much more than "an official SMB ROM hack"... it could produce some downright INSANE levels...
Adding Yoshi would be cool.
I would like to point out there is already a 8-bit version of Yoshi, although non-playable.
It was used for the Super Mario Deluxe game on Gameboy Color.

@Hy8ogen The Koopas and Goombas also change with the theme, so I suppose Yoshi does as well.
@BLPs Honestly I hated that they only tied it to one level. Back in the day, my brothers and I used a game genie to use Kuribo's shoe in every level, and most levels it was a glitchy mess. That'd be the only reason I could see, but then again I'm not certain that it wasn't just the codes.
Mario Maker is already a solid must-have for me and Yoshi is like the cherry on top. Anything is better with Yoshi.
The actual engine would be the same but it will implement different a physics & action model for each style / era. So Mario's jump will differ from level to level.
@Falchion "You euthanized your faithful Yoshi more quickly than any test subject on record. Congratulations."
@retro_player_22 Cape is already confirmed.
i wonder if we can make a "yoshi's revenge" level where every Yoshi sacrificed returns for vengeance apon the mustached plumber
Mario Maker is starting to look really good with all these options and styles and now Yoshi is gonna be in it! It'll be interesting to see how Yoshi works (will he get different power ups for eating different coloured Koopas like in Mario World or have is flutter jump like in NSMBU) and it'll also be cool to a SMB or SMB3 style Yoshi.
Remember, Yoshi was originally meant to be in Super Mario Bros.(1985) So his inclusion wouldn't surprise me. They already have the Sprite for Mario World and Mario Bros U. But they could also use the Yoshi sprite from the NES version of Mario is Missing, for the Mario 3 sprite.
Also, Mario Maker could be releasing September 13th, because that would be bang on the 30th Anniversary of Super Mario Bros. After a quick Google search, I found out that the first date that Mario 1 released on, was September 13th 1985. So it would make sense to release it then, right? I mean, they already stated that it would release in September, so all signs point to that release date.
I'm waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too excited for this.
I know this wont be for everyone, not every person LOVES the idea of making their own levels in games, but I think enough of us do exist that there should be more games like this.
@Takerkaneanite6 That's my thinking as well, I doubt its been delayed from early 2015 to late 2015 because just so much work was needed. I'm certain it'll hit Sep 13th
@AugustusOxy I was shocked in the Direct when it said it was getting a disc version, for a creation suite i was expecting digital only
I think any and all power ups could be included...not just a fire flower. The more content, the more replay.
Can't wait for this game. It'll be interesting to see how many good levels are out there. I probably won't come up with too many good ones at first.
Kuribo's shoe has always been one of my favorite Mario items. I'd love to see it make a comeback. Nintendo, if you're listening, I will buy this title for sure if you can work in this item. I was on the fence, but nostalgia is super powerful.
The more I see Mario Maker the more I get hyped for it.
This wiil be a day one purchase for me, always wanted to make my own levels!
Is it twisted that my first thought was a Yoshi death chamber where Mario must drop numerous Yoshi's into the lava below to get to the end and stuff like P switches dropping Yoshi's to their death... Wow I'm messed up.
I loved using Kuribo's Iceskate in 3D World. Hopefully there's a variation of the shoe and iceskate in this game.
This is my game of the year. <3
If Kuribo's Shoe is included . . , I will go insane!
Mario characters and items in Mario creation game? Get outta here!!
@Samuel-Flutter
The shoe was glitched because its only designed to work with certain enemies on-screen.
Thats how mario 3 works internally. It divides all its enemies into groups which can be loaded at the same time. If one edits the game and adds conflicting enemies, you will see the previous one glitching because the graphic data bank are loaded and replace the one its supposed to work.
Since Yoshi's in, we've got to see bosses now! Specifically Boom Boom and the Koopalings. Oh, and Jr. since we have New Super Mario Bros. in there.
Please have multiplayer, please have multiplayer…
Multiplayer could be useful for those struggling to beat the brutally difficult user-made levels.
@Gridatttack Ah that would explain while the sprite glitch was always parts of other objects. But it also takes away my only reasoning as to why they kept it in one level... unless...
Super Mario Bros. THREE, in World 5-THREE, there are THREE Kuribo's shoes... FIVE toes are on a foot and only ONE foot fits inside a shoe.... THREE times FIVE is FIFTEEN... Half-Life 3 confirmed in 2015!
This game looks so interesting. I can't wait to see the creative stuff people come up with
@Samuel-Flutter The sad thing is, that out of the 16 unused levels of the game, 2 of them features the shoe.
@icedude545
@Stubborn_Monkey I'm hoping they just go with basically Super Mario World's physics for the most part. It is without doubt the pinnacle of Mario's jumping and moving controls in terms of response and feel. If they don't I think that will be a rather big missed opportunity to be honest. Unless there is a way to somehow give you a choice from all the variations, which doesn't kinda break the game should someone switch to a different style in the middle of a level maybe designed around another type of Mario control.
@Gridatttack Oh there were that many levels unused? They didn't come back in the advance version as e-Reader levels did they?
Kuribo's shoe was my favorite part of SMB3!
No way! You've gave me a shout out in the sub title!!
@SetupDisk that's hilarious and I'm sure it's true. They'll probably con some term like Yoshi killer levels or something
@Stubborn_Monkey I'm thinking that wall jumps will require switching to a more current Mario theme while playing. This may be the same with Yoshi. So switching between game styles may become important. Just a thought though.
I like the modern styles, not the retro ones. Oh well, that's just me I guess.
@Nico07 Well it's either going to be that certain moves and items are limited to specific themes/generations or they're going to work the same across all themes/generations and considering we've already seen that certain enemies have been added across the multiple versions, I expect the same will be true of the moves too to be honest. Although, I think either would work fine if it's handled right BUT the one thing that locking items to certain themes/generations would prevent is taking certain items and powerups from level to level and if that is a limitation then I'd be a bit upset. I love that if you get a cape or Yoshi in one level of Super Mario World etc that you can take it into any other level and often find awesome secrets that you couldn't have accessed otherwise. I'd hate for them to remove what I consider a core feature/element of the best Super Mario games.
@erv The New Super Mario Bros theme is actually my least favourite. It looks the most fake and plasicky. Super Mario World's look and style is the best imo.
@Moviefan2k4 You wanna hold-off just for that? After all, Mario Maker is just an editor (which also can be used to play, I know).
There are already lots of other games that outclass Mario Maker! If I were you I couldn't wait another half year, you're missing out on so much already!
@erv I think that age (gaming age that is) has something to do with it. I appreciate the Super Mario Bros 3 art the best because it pushed the 8-bit pixel art look to the limit.
I don't know if that's the case, I'm a gamer since my first nes back in the day.
@erv Yeah; also; the Super Mario World versions of Super Mario Bros 3 sprites/tiles looked way better than the originals anyway imo. I kinda wish they'd include the Super Mario All-Stars sprites as alternate skin choices for SMB and SMB3 actually.
@Kirk I don't believe items like the cape could be included in the original Mario Bros without altering things extremely, nor could the have wall jumping. I'm fairly sure the physics will be different between the themes.
@shani Well, I'm on a limited budget, so spending $300 for the Wii-U is a challenge anyway. I'm still trying to replace my HDTV, which was stolen over a year ago. I'll probably have to save up for both.
@Nico07 The thing is that it's not really the original Super Mario Bros per-say. It's just some blocks, sprites and other stuff taken from the game. I don't think the game itself is directly built on the engines and exact mechanics of any of the previous games. I think it is an all new Mario platformer that simply incorporates the look and style of the previous games, along with most/many of the sprite/block elements obviously; so it doesn't really matter that you couldn't fly or wall jump in the original Super Mario Bros because blocks and stuff are just blocks and stuff and as long as you lay them out with enough room for Mario to fly or jump then there's no reason he shouldn't be able to; regardless of the type of flight or jumping. Much in the same way a few homebrew coders have done with various hacked versions of Super Mario Bros for example (from all generations). That's my thinking anyway.
They're def mixing some of the enemies across generations, Boos and Wrigglers for example, so I wouldn't say it's too much of a stretch to imagine they'll do the same with the move-set but they've not actually shown us that actually happening with any moves, I don't think, so I'll temper my expectations accordingly.
@moviefan2k4: Damn, that's sad.
But 300$? That sounds like a lot. I bought my Wii U (Pro Edition with Wind Waker) for 200 Euros about a year ago (Amazon Warehouse Deals)...
I would always but such things from second hand unless you have the money to buy everything new (which I don't have). That really saves you a lot of money (like my graphics card that would cost 300 new but I got it for 220€, used but working fine & with warranty).
@Moviefan2k4 I'm on an even more limited budget than you. In fact, I'm so poor that best I can afford is just to look at these articles and videos and talk about all these awesome games I'd love to play. That's how skint I am
@rjejr thanks , and good to know ! I actually watched the direct but must have overlooked that somehow, I'll check it out again for sure though:)
@Samuel-Flutter Nope, they didnt. Now that you mention it, the e reader levels dont feature the goomba shoe either :<
The other sad thing is that those unused levels are STILL in the GBA code. (albeit a bit altered in aesthetics due to how the GBA handles backgrounds and palettes)
@ShoryukenKid - Your welcome. You probably missed it b/c it was only on the screen for 1 second during which time he was talking about the ability to share levels w/ other people. It was as if they didn't want us to know we could make world maps, so I'm not surprised.
Could someone correct the last sentence of the article?
@HugoSmits There is also an 8-bit Yoshi in the NES version of Mario is Missing.
Kuribo Shoe. That's the reason to buy the game now.
