There is a 0% chance I'm buying that game at that price. And by the time it's at a price I'd be willing to pay, I imagine I'll care even less than I do now. Nintendo's designers and developers are wonderfully creative, but the business side of Nintendo really doesn't seem particularly adept at supporting their hard work with smart business practices.
If you think about it, with the amount of lying Pitchford is known for, this could be the best possible sign for the Switch!
Jokes aside, why does it seem like every Nintendo system launches with so much negativity around it? I want a Nintendo system to launch and for me to not immediately worry it'll fail. Ugh.
@Nik-Davies I would argue that adding in features like this can inevitably be a good thing and lead to greater difficulty down the road. If they add in these essentially super-easy modes and features it'll allow games to actually get harder without the more casual crowd crying foul since they can simply turn on the super--easy features if they get frustrated enough. I don't know if adding things like that in will in fact make Nintendo's designers more intrepid down the road, but adding features like these can easily be a build-up to more challenging levels for standard players in the future. Will they? Well... probably not.... but it's possible!
Also, I feel like we need an early and steady stream of eShop games to fill the massive voids in game releases. Nintendo hasn't talked about it at all, so I hope they have the sense to have some heavy-hitting indies coming in fast. I'm going to be all over BoI Afterbirth +, but otherwise I don't feel like I've heard of any indies coming along for Switch.
Also, how it Afterbirth + not on this list @ThomasBW84?
If it weren't for Zelda this could easily be the worst Nintendo launch line-up since the Virtual Boy. Luckily, I won't need anything but Zelda to get me on board, but wow. Can't say I blame anyone waiting a good while for the Switch.
First: Never do another live presentation like this for your products again, Nintendo. Please? I forgot how awful your E3 press conferences were until last night. Just.... Don't.
Second: it is a VERY good thing the Switch sneak peak mentioned pretty much none of that stuff about the controllers and such. The Switch teaser was simple, sleek, and elegant. Now, to many audiences, the Switch will look like another sad gimmick console with a bunch of dumb party games and weird controllers. It was convoluted and the games designed with that functionality in mind look pretty blah. The sections on 1-2-Switch and Arms both went on forever. I had Nintendoland at E3 flashbacks, in a bad way; I can't imagine those games selling a single person on the console on their own. If 1-2-Switch isn't bundled in, I'll be stunned; who would drop $60 on that?
Third: how did we not get a confirmed launch lineup? That should have been in there somewhere, no? I'd like to think that with under 2 months to go that should have been easy to have set in stone.
Fourth: They must be saving big reveals for E3, because compared to the rumors, that was extremely tame. I wasn't shocked by anything at all, really. With titles like XC2 and FE: Warriors that don't appear to be coming soon getting mentioned, you'd think they'd have more games to tease. Again, I pray they're waiting for E3. I think they needed something like their announcement of Bayonetta 2 for the Wii U to get people hyped up about a big, major third party exclusive. I expected there to be a niche third party exclusive that'd get the media and core gamers swooning, like a teaser for Beyond Good and Evil 2 (as has been heavily rumored) but nope. Nothing. Just what we already knew, stuff coming much later, and party games. Ugh.
Fifth: pretty clear they delayed Zelda for the launch of this system since there's clearly nothing close to a system seller ready otherwise, no? With the other biggest guns being Arms and 1-2-Switch and a port of Skyrim (maybe at launch...?) I can't fathom anyone but hardcore fans wanting it and simply hoping for something good to come along, like the Wii U and 3DS launches before it. The system's killer app at launch is Zelda. Which, hey, is enough for me, but I was expecting at least one major surprise. Not so much, though.
Overall I'm pretty meh about the whole presentation and all (probably shouldn't have wasted my time staying up to watch it, honestly), but I am looking forward to the system itself and playing the new Zelda sooner than I expected. Hope to get a system at launch!
The one thing this can offer that's hard to say no to is unprecedented third party support. Developer doesn't want to make a Switch port? Well, you could still play the PC version of the game streaming via Nvidia's service. Obviously the native versions would be ideal, but given the choice between missing out on big AAA games, and being able to stream them if I want to? I can't imagine who wouldn't want to at least have that as a possibility instead of buying a whole other console. Plus, unlike OnLive, having someone like Nvidia offering the service makes it infinitely less likely to simply vanish as they once did. I think this sounds great, honestly. I played the entirety of Arkham City on OnLive back in 2012, I think, and even then it worked shockingly well. Not 100% perfect at all times, but much more than acceptable. I like the possibilities this can offer, for sure. I wouldn't be stunned if, should it be implemented, they would only offer it while the Switch is docked, however.
My hype is to infinity and beyond. Don't let me down, Nintendo. Let's see awesome games, a good price, and Zelda at launch in March and I'll be through the roof.
I'm a bit stunned by the lack of mention of the 2DS in here, which was Nintendo's official sanctioning of the 3D being a completely non-essential feature of the system. Sure, they say it's for kids and all (and to a degree, it certainly is), but I think an element of it was certainly trying to hook in people who had zero interest in 3D but wanted to play the games, and so a budget device would work on both fronts.
@buildz Hey now, clearly this person just learned a new word and they're really excited about it. And like many other folks on the internet, they're using any word they learn that sounds clever as a synonym for "I don't like this thing because of reasons" with zero regard for what it means.
I can only assume they decided to make the game free to download to inflate download numbers, but thanks to the idiots that expected not to pay anything, it's tanking their review scores. That and the online requirement, of course. Can't imagine it was worth it in the end.
@RupeeClock It's rapidly looking like Nintendo wants My Nintendo to serve as a microtransaction hub for their mobile titles. Which, I suppose is fine enough. I just hoped/expected it would be intended to draw folks to their traditional gaming platforms and titles, as I recall them saying in the past.
I never thought I'd have to say it, but, I really miss Club Nintendo. I actually felt REWARDED for buying games. That and the Deluxe Digital promo blow My Nintendo away pretty universally. I got FREE games including: Star Fox 64 3D, DKCR: 3D, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Mario Golf, Super Mario RPG, Link's Awakening, Kirby's Adventure 3D, A Link to the Past, and Super Mario 3.
Now, I can exchange points I got for spending real money on digital games for...... a 30% off coupon..... for Star Fox 64 3D.... which I already got free from Club Nintendo. Yeesh. What a shame. They could SO EASILY give out free games (they did it with a Wario Ware game at the start, no?) which would be especially nice as a thanks to the Wii U owners languishing out there, and their lack of doing so (especially for Gold Points, where they already got our money) is such a disappointment.
I'm fine with it being 100% optional for those who want it. Me, I'll carry on ignoring it completely, but for those who want it, have at it. This is the approach I was hoping they'd take if they did anything with VR, and I think it being wireless makes it infinitely more appealing.
I suspect I will enjoy the Switch more inevitably, but as of now, I think the Wii U has been my favorite Nintendo console. Seriously. I have more to play for it and more I'd like to play than I have time for or could afford. I've never had that happen with any other console before, honestly. Clearly I'm part of the vast minority, but I think the Wii U had a lot of incredibly good games, and I'm hoping for the Switch to kick it up another notch with more support outside of Nintendo themselves.
I literally had no clue this was even a thing, and I ravenously consume Nintendo news. They really need to have the Rotom Pokedex mention this in-game to players to encourage them to sign up as a reminder. I don't recall it being mentioned or tutorialized in any meaningful way in-game, but clearly they're not communicating this very well. The need for a process that extends beyond like 3 steps is even more puzzling.
@merrygorndoflife I didn't even think of that. Won't be stunned now, since it'll require Wii U owners to upgrade to play the game they were all waiting for since, what, 2015? Yeesh. I'll be getting the Switch regardless and playing the heck out of Zelda on it, but still.... that would be a MASSIVE slap in the face for Nintendo fans.
It's easy to focus on these situations and point to the massive failures to anticipate demand Nintendo has made, but I wonder how many copies of, say, Metroid Prime: Federation Force, Chibi Robo: Zip Lash, and Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival are languishing in bargain bins because they hoped for larger sales and simply didn't get them due to lack of interest. (For those curious, especially for Chibi Robo, AC:AF, and the AC amiibo, look how cheap they are new on Amazon.... yikes....).
I don't doubt this was all a publicity stunt on some level, but I imagine the struggle of figuring out exactly how much stock to send out when you're not 100% sure of a product's success can be brutal. Had everyone decided not to care about it, these would be selling for $30 or less come January, and they'd be in a good deal more trouble. I imagine they'd prefer to underproduce and sell through at a 100% rate than to overproduce and be left with a ton of stock they'd otherwise never move early next year, especially with the Switch coming in March.
Almost all of my favorite games I played this year came out in another year. Which is a bit of a shame, but I think the Wii U and 3DS have more than enough that I've missed that it was good to catch up a bit. There's still more I want to play on both platforms than I have the time and money for, so I can't complain. Definitely excited to get my mitts on the Switch and lots of new games next year, though!
Been loving it on Wii U and my New 3DS, definitely up for more on this Switch! Can't wait for all of my on the big screen and on the go games to be 100 percent synced at all times on the Switch!
If there's no way to play without a connection, I'll be really disappointed. I'm almost always connected, but I don't want to worry about being dropped for a moment and being booted from a game. Definitely not pleased with this. Unless a game is online multiplayer and literally cannot be played without internet, I am firmly opposed to any and all always-on connections.
Also, hard not to see this always-on connection requirement leading to rampant server issues at launch, which should be fun for paying customers on a premium game.
This approach has worked very well for Google, so I appreciate them doing this. Why turn hackers into your sworn enemies? Put them on the payroll like this, and make their reward cash instead of helping others pirate games. Wins across the board, as far as I'm concerned.
@DiscoGentleman I refuse to believe that they couldn't grab the worst-selling VC games and let those be free downloads. I mean, at least then we get SOMETHING for our points instead of the chance to spend more money for more worthless points....
Got the theme and since my Black Friday Mario New 3DS just came in, I got ALttP. I'm pretty annoyed that Nintendo doesn't give me a discount for having it on Wii U, but this was just good enough to get me on board. I have fond memories of playing ALttP on my GBA SP on the go that I can now relive.
Considering that Mass Effect Andromeda comes out in the same month as the Switch, it's hard to imagine that isn't the title they're talking about. I'd like to think they learned their lesson from the Mass Effect 3 port at the Wii U's launch that launching an old game on new hardware isn't likely to set the world on fire. Considering that the Switch seems like it should be primed for Unreal Engine support, and I assume ME still uses Unreal, it should make porting MUCH simpler this time around. I'm not super into Mass Effect, but it'd be amazing to start the system off with a huge release that's fresh off the presses.
@Priceless_Spork I just wish that he'd brought it to the eShop instead. If only to make off-tv play viable. I got it on 3DS as well and definitely enjoyed it, but to know he probably made no money on it for the Wii whatsoever kills me inside. Lousy Wii Shop sales threshold nonsense. I'm similarly glad to see his next game will still come to 3DS, but I would hate to see developers sour on Nintendo platforms due to poor sales for committing to dead hardware.
I appreciate being so forthcoming about it. The Switch is all but guaranteed to have much longer legs than the Wii U, so I'd rather see them wait, release it on a (hopefully) vibrant platform, and come to like Nintendo instead of blaming them for a game not selling when it's on a dead system. I remember VBlank's insistence on releasing Retro City Rampage on the Wii Shop Channel, and how horribly that went over. I'd hate to see anyone else do that again.
eBay has existed for about 20 years now at this point, and they know what they're doing; they make their money off transaction fees, so the higher they sell things for, the better. Here's a spoiler for everyone out there: if you refuse to pay more than $60 for it, nobody will charge more than $60. eBay is profiting off of consumerism, sure, but they're not the cause of it all.
If it's more than a port and/or a more advanced port, I think it'd be quite interesting to the let the console's name be the inspiration for a new mode or twist: Super Smash Switch, allowing players to bring two characters into battle and switch between them between stocks and/or at will... a tag team mode, if you will. I think that'd be pretty awesome, especially in online modes and such. It'd also add another layer of depth, allowing players to respond to the opponent's character choice with speed, counters, etc. based on what you need to turn the tide in battle. Just a thought, one that I think makes a lot of sense in the context of the new name and would make it more than a glorified port.
This implies I've played anything else since it released so I'd have booted it up enough times to notice. I don't know when I will even have the chance to find this information out at the rate I'm going!
We're getting what we deserve, it would seem. I did my part to resist whatever the next 4 years will do to us, now I get to sit back, watch, and hope for everything not to fall apart. God help us all.
Considering that the coins are kind of useless overall, I'd be more annoyed that I got the Xenoblade deal on Friday at the higher cost, but I suspect I'll have nothing to spend the rest I have on anyway, so oh well.
When you consider that all the guts are inside the display, it'd just need a Samsung Gear VR-like set-up to make it happen. Considering that even the X1 blows most phones out of the water, and most phones can do at least rudimentary VR, all Nintendo would need is a fairly cheap headset to be good to go. The JoyCon controller dock would further make it perfect for VR out of the box, and I think that completely wireless VR is really the best way to do it.
That said, I still think making VR a major point of interest is a horrible idea, but as a sideshow with a low barrier to entry, I have no issues with it. Don't know that I'd even bother to buy a Switch VR headset, but as an optional thing on the side, it won't affect me any.
@Jamotello I've pointed it out in the past, but the Razer Core line seems like an exceptionally obvious upgrade path for the Switch, like you're suggesting. There's already docks for PCs making that happen, so I'd love to just need to buy a new dock with some bonus CPU/GPU power to get better performance and/or new games and the sort. It'll be interesting to see what they do with add-ons down the road, but I'm all for them going wild with it as well!
@Jamotello I'm assuming there will be things down the road like a Switch Mini or something to that effect which will be smaller and more deliberately a "handheld" while keeping the ecosystem and games unified. Maybe it'll have a lower-res screen to up the performance and such as well.
This is exactly what I wanted, and I want it ASAP. It looks sleek, slick, well-made, and not like a toy. I love the Wii U Gamepad, but this makes it look like a sad toy. I love the concept, and it looks like it's being executed masterfully. Love the instant removal of the system at any time.
My one lingering hope is that it'll have some basic tablet features/apps built into/for it. It's likely almost impossible, but I'd love to have things like Google Apps on it (Drive, Gmail, SMS/Hangouts, system-wide notifications like Android), and if I did, I'd never want another tablet again.
@Pink_Floyd I'm on a base 3DS, but to my knowledge, it'll play the same across devices. I don't get the sense that it was optimized for the horsepower of the N3DS in the same way as Terraria was, for instance. Games like Pokemon X & Y which chug in battle scenes with the 3D on show that unless a game is specifically checking for the extra horsepower of the N3DS, it won't make any difference. Seems Gurumin follows suit.
As for patches and such, they certainly can fix framerate issues, but I'd wager that whether it happens at all will depend at least in part on sales, and what precisely the issues are. If it sells well, and they actually can fix it? I wager they might. If it's a sales dud, or the problems go as deep as the engine itself (especially since this is a port of a PC/PSP game) unless they're a particularly noble company, I doubt they'll do it.
Here's hoping it gets fixed, but it's not too bad even without it. I thought it was abysmal when I saw the townspeople, but Parin moves at a smooth clip throughout and the only real issues I noticed otherwise were when entering a new area, and only for a few moments. The game moves at a pretty steady 30fps, but some elements in the shots move much slower. So it shouldn't affect you or your movement, but it can be a bit jarring at first. I'm used to it now and enjoying the game overall. On a genuine scale of 1-10, it's probably about a 6.5-7 for me as of now. Not bad, not amazing, but pretty good, and mostly worth the cash spent.
I can't seem to leave combat without getting wrecked and using a ton of healing items to get by. Anyone have tips on how to not suck at battles in this game? They feel more like trial and error to me. I've tried to use the dodging move (X, I think?), but its effectiveness strikes me as being dubious at best.
@Pink_Floyd It's not terrible. What threw me off was that the NPCs generally seem to move at about 15fps for some weird reason. Ditto for most enemies as well. The action itself moves along pretty steadily, though. Took some time for me to realize it's not just a sloppy mess technically, though I do wonder why the NPCs and enemies are on such a slow framerate. I struggle to imagine it being a stylistic choice, but I haven't played other versions, so I'm not sure.
@Flowerlark You can preorder on Walmart's website right now, if you want to make sure you don't get left in the cold on Amazon. They had the 8-bit and Ocarina Link earlier today when I checked and locked them in.

Re: The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ is Looking Like a Decent Bet for Nintendo Switch
Been loving it on Wii U and my New 3DS, definitely up for more on this Switch! Can't wait for all of my on the big screen and on the go games to be 100 percent synced at all times on the Switch!
Re: Random: Kanye West's Potential Album Tracklist is All About the Wii
Silent Hill? Konami lawyers frivolously descending in 3.... 2.........
Re: Super Mario Run Will Require a Constant Online Connection
If there's no way to play without a connection, I'll be really disappointed. I'm almost always connected, but I don't want to worry about being dropped for a moment and being booted from a game. Definitely not pleased with this. Unless a game is online multiplayer and literally cannot be played without internet, I am firmly opposed to any and all always-on connections.
Also, hard not to see this always-on connection requirement leading to rampant server issues at launch, which should be fun for paying customers on a premium game.
Re: Nintendo Is Looking For Hackers Who Can Discover 3DS Vulnerabilities
This approach has worked very well for Google, so I appreciate them doing this. Why turn hackers into your sworn enemies? Put them on the payroll like this, and make their reward cash instead of helping others pirate games. Wins across the board, as far as I'm concerned.
Re: My Nintendo Gets Plenty of Legend of Zelda Goodies in North America
@DiscoGentleman I refuse to believe that they couldn't grab the worst-selling VC games and let those be free downloads. I mean, at least then we get SOMETHING for our points instead of the chance to spend more money for more worthless points....
Re: My Nintendo Gets Plenty of Legend of Zelda Goodies in North America
Got the theme and since my Black Friday Mario New 3DS just came in, I got ALttP. I'm pretty annoyed that Nintendo doesn't give me a discount for having it on Wii U, but this was just good enough to get me on board. I have fond memories of playing ALttP on my GBA SP on the go that I can now relive.
Re: EA Reconfirms That A "Major Game" Is In Development For Nintendo Switch
Re: Stardew Valley is Cancelled for Wii U, But It's Heading to Nintendo Switch
@Priceless_Spork I just wish that he'd brought it to the eShop instead. If only to make off-tv play viable. I got it on 3DS as well and definitely enjoyed it, but to know he probably made no money on it for the Wii whatsoever kills me inside. Lousy Wii Shop sales threshold nonsense. I'm similarly glad to see his next game will still come to 3DS, but I would hate to see developers sour on Nintendo platforms due to poor sales for committing to dead hardware.
Re: Stardew Valley is Cancelled for Wii U, But It's Heading to Nintendo Switch
I appreciate being so forthcoming about it. The Switch is all but guaranteed to have much longer legs than the Wii U, so I'd rather see them wait, release it on a (hopefully) vibrant platform, and come to like Nintendo instead of blaming them for a game not selling when it's on a dead system. I remember VBlank's insistence on releasing Retro City Rampage on the Wii Shop Channel, and how horribly that went over. I'd hate to see anyone else do that again.
Re: eBay Feeds The Scalper Within You By Offering Guaranteed Profit On Your NES Classic Mini
eBay has existed for about 20 years now at this point, and they know what they're doing; they make their money off transaction fees, so the higher they sell things for, the better. Here's a spoiler for everyone out there: if you refuse to pay more than $60 for it, nobody will charge more than $60. eBay is profiting off of consumerism, sure, but they're not the cause of it all.
Re: Talking Point: What We'd Like To See In Super Smash Bros. For Nintendo Switch
Re: Video: Pokémon Sun And Moon Takes A Fair Old Time To Boot On Vanilla 3DS Consoles
@GloverMist But for the low, low price of $200 you too could save multiple seconds! And experience slightly faster performance in a turn-based RPG!
Jokes aside, I would be willing to grab that $100 model if I can on Black Friday. I'd love to have some portable Binding of Isaac in my life.
Re: Video: Pokémon Sun And Moon Takes A Fair Old Time To Boot On Vanilla 3DS Consoles
This implies I've played anything else since it released so I'd have booted it up enough times to notice. I don't know when I will even have the chance to find this information out at the rate I'm going!
Re: Steve Carell In Talks To Star In Forthcoming Minecraft Movie
@MagicEmperor Or more accurately in that case, The Streeper?
Re: Darksiders: Warmastered Edition Now Coming to Wii U "At a Later Stage", Delaying eShop Release
So, are we getting this BEFORE or AFTER we get Project CARS?
Re: Nintendo Share Value Dives Following US Presidential Result, But Recovery Is Likely
We're getting what we deserve, it would seem. I did my part to resist whatever the next 4 years will do to us, now I get to sit back, watch, and hope for everything not to fall apart. God help us all.
Re: Small My Nintendo Reward Discounts Arrive in North America
Considering that the coins are kind of useless overall, I'd be more annoyed that I got the Xenoblade deal on Friday at the higher cost, but I suspect I'll have nothing to spend the rest I have on anyway, so oh well.
Re: Tatsumi Kimishima Suggests Nintendo Switch Will be the Core for a Wide Array of Accessories
Re: Nintendo Confirms Switch Isn't Physically Backwards Compatible With 3DS And Wii U Software
Re: Nintendo Confirms Switch Isn't Physically Backwards Compatible With 3DS And Wii U Software
@Jamotello I'm assuming there will be things down the road like a Switch Mini or something to that effect which will be smaller and more deliberately a "handheld" while keeping the ecosystem and games unified. Maybe it'll have a lower-res screen to up the performance and such as well.
Re: Guide: Everything We Now Know About the Nintendo Switch
Re: Talking Point: What We Hope to See in the Nintendo NX Preview Trailer
I can only hope this will herald the return of Non-Specific Action Figure. How else can you show off a new console?
Re: Review: Gurumin 3D: A Monstrous Adventure (3DS eShop)
Re: Review: Gurumin 3D: A Monstrous Adventure (3DS eShop)
I can't seem to leave combat without getting wrecked and using a ton of healing items to get by. Anyone have tips on how to not suck at battles in this game? They feel more like trial and error to me. I've tried to use the dodging move (X, I think?), but its effectiveness strikes me as being dubious at best.
Re: Review: Gurumin 3D: A Monstrous Adventure (3DS eShop)
@Pink_Floyd It's not terrible. What threw me off was that the NPCs generally seem to move at about 15fps for some weird reason. Ditto for most enemies as well. The action itself moves along pretty steadily, though. Took some time for me to realize it's not just a sloppy mess technically, though I do wonder why the NPCs and enemies are on such a slow framerate. I struggle to imagine it being a stylistic choice, but I haven't played other versions, so I'm not sure.
Re: Deals: Legend of Zelda amiibo, Snazzy New 2DS Colours and More
@Flowerlark You can preorder on Walmart's website right now, if you want to make sure you don't get left in the cold on Amazon. They had the 8-bit and Ocarina Link earlier today when I checked and locked them in.
