Re: RiME Price Lowered for Switch eShop, With Soundtrack Incentive at Retail

MarioPhD

@DragonEleven Paying someone else (Tantalus, in this case) to port the game over isn't free. I'm assuming that since that was once a PS4 exclusive that they're charging the base $30 cost to cover the original development platform and the X1 (which probably won't take as much optimization as the Switch since it's more powerful), and the Switch version was never part of the original plan, hence the external company handling the port and the extra cost. I imagine most of the extra cost comes down to paying for the additional porting to the system, since I'm sure a small developer and publisher don't have the cash laying around, or all the extra time themselves, to make all that happen easily.

Re: RiME Price Lowered for Switch eShop, With Soundtrack Incentive at Retail

MarioPhD

Grabbed this when Amazon had a price error, so I'm only looking at paying $25.79 for it with tax and shipping included, which I am very okay with! Hope people get over the small pricing fiasco soon and don't hold a grudge against the title. It looks wonderful and I'm very excited to check it out! At the price I'm paying and with the soundtrack included this should be quite the bargain!

Re: Review: NBA Playgrounds (Switch eShop)

MarioPhD

@JHDK There were certainly not a ton of them, and I can't help but think the complete lack of sports titles was a nail in the coffin for the Wii U; lots of people really want them, and if they're not releasing on the platform, that's a whole lot fewer people buying into it. I don't think I'll be getting this one soon, but I already have NBA 2K18 preordered on Amazon to show them the interest is there!

Re: Review: NBA Playgrounds (Switch eShop)

MarioPhD

@Brutchie-bear I can say that Tumbleseed is a pretty dang hard game, so factor that into your decision. It is VERY unforgiving overall, but rewards you for getting better as you go. So your choice will inevitably come down to a fun, pick-up-and-play title with multiplayer potential with this one (seemingly) and a very challenging solo experience with randomly generated levels that you can keep playing. Not sure if that makes the choice any easier, but I suspect whether you're looking for a solid challenge or an arcade experience would be the easiest way to decide which way to go.

Re: Review: NBA Playgrounds (Switch eShop)

MarioPhD

I REALLY wish there were a demo for this one. If I could get a sense of whether I literally enjoy the in-game experience I could easily be tempted into this one. The lukewarm response I've seen to it, though, coupled with my own concerns looks likely to keep me away until a sale hits.

Re: Hands On: Hey! Read These Hey! Pikmin Impressions

MarioPhD

@AirElephant I fully expect this to be about 5 or 6 around these parts and a metascore hovering around 60 at best. I mean, that's not bad, and I think for a title like this that's not the worst thing that's ever happened. I think it's hard to quantify something as a disappointment if you don't go in expect much, and that mindset will likely do Pikmin fans well with this one. Hopefully releasing this on the 3DS will get more people interested in a full-on Switch sequel, since original entries in the series have only appeared on Nintendo's least popular consoles, which is a shame. I really enjoyed Pikmin 3!

Re: Review: TumbleSeed (Switch eShop)

MarioPhD

I love the game, but I would not mind a difficulty setting in the future. The first area? Super easy to me after a good few runs. The second one? A HELLSCAPE. I hope/assume I will better be able to tackle it in the future, but for now, it's a slow build to less of a difficulty curve than an exceptionally tall difficulty wall. To its credit, though, it MAKES ME want to "git gud" at it. I'm hoping it'll be like The Binding of Isaac for me, where I used to barely be able to clear a couple floors, and now I can usually completely finish the game at least once per every 5-10 runs. Someday, I will reach the top of the mountain! ........ I hope......

Re: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Takes Top Spot to Give Nintendo a First UK Number 1 Since 2011

MarioPhD

@JaxonH If only it even sounded slick in the first place! I already have 12 games for my Switch with my 13th about to be Tumbleseed today. Heck, with the way the UI is, I can't even see all of my games at once anymore! Also, by a quick look on the eShop it appears there's currently 47 titles available, and plenty more on the horizon. Sure, a number of those are ports and re-releases, but such is the nature of console launches.

Furthermore, based on some simple counting, the Switch actually has more games available for purchase right now, 2 months into its life cycle, than the Wii U did at the same time, and no colossal game droughts on the horizon, unlike the Wii U. A big improvement, to be sure! Not that it was hard to improve on the first couple months of the Wii U's life, but still!

Re: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Takes Top Spot to Give Nintendo a First UK Number 1 Since 2011

MarioPhD

@BLP_Software I think the easy answer is that the Nintendo crowd is more into games that conjure up retro nostalgia, and Tetris on a Nintendo system just feels right-- probably as a result of it coming packed in with the Gameboy. Not sure how much of it is that, but I feel like any game going for a distinctly retro style or in a long-running retro IP should know they probably have an audience on Nintendo hardware. To that end, aside of weird licensing issues, I'm still puzzled as to how The Disney Afternoon Collection isn't seemingly coming to Switch and/or 3DS; that's almost too obvious of a fit.

Re: Feature: The Growing Pains of Curation on the Nintendo Switch eShop

MarioPhD

@NEStalgia While it may not be 100% confirmed yet, NintendoLife has reported on less much faster, so I'm still quite shocked. I mean, they posted about "Switch Actress 'Karen' Embraces her Nintendo Meme" by referencing an Instagram post in less time than it's taken to even just report something relatively vague but hopeful like "Axiom Verge Developer Planning for Physical Release on Switch." A bit odd, to be sure.

But yeah, I can't say I blame them for asking people who released a Wii U eShop game less than a year ago to hold off, which I imagine is likely the case. Titles like Afterbirth Plus and Stardew Valley never came to the Wii U, so it's pretty dumb to complain about those specific examples as evidence for someone getting their port snubbed.

Re: Feature: The Growing Pains of Curation on the Nintendo Switch eShop

MarioPhD

@duducamargo Yeah, even just a point person who says "Hey, we've heard you!" would be nice. I mean, does Nintendo even HAVE a community manager of any kind? They really need someone closer to the ground to communicate with fans. Communication seems like one of Nintendo's biggest weaknesses, and I suspect the wild differences in experiences reported in this article by folks dealing with Nintendo seems to speak to whether you get the luck of the draw when it comes to who you call/email/get assigned to your studio. For some people it seems incredibly effortless, for others it's an exercise in frustration. They need to get as close to the "effortless" part of that equation as they can, especially for developers with a proven track record on Nintendo hardware.

Re: Feature: The Growing Pains of Curation on the Nintendo Switch eShop

MarioPhD

@NEStalgia I feel pretty confident that the dev of Axiom Verge is one of the folks listed here, if only because they've been making unhappy public statements for some time. But they also probably don't want Nintendo fanboys giving them grief or to lose sales.

I can't believe Nintendolife didn't report on the physical release of Axiom Verge yet, though. I doubt it's connected to this article's content, but it is a peculiar coincidence nonetheless.

Re: Poll: Do You Think Call Of Duty: WWII Will Come To Switch, And Would You Want It If It Did?

MarioPhD

For all the weird dissenters out there getting huffy about the poll responses, the questions are: do you think it will come, and do you think you will buy it. For me, the answers to both are "no."

If the question were "do you want it to come to the Switch?" my answer is "Sure, why not?" I'd like to think many other people would agree. Honestly, I couldn't care less about Call of Duty at this point, but other people still do, and if it can be successful and lead to more support from the folks at Activision, then why not?

Re: Feature: The Growing Pains of Curation on the Nintendo Switch eShop

MarioPhD

@duducamargo I could certainly see that being an option if implemented well, but I think services like Steam Greenlight and pretty much anything Valve has done with community curation has shown just how easily that approach can be exploited. If nothing else, maybe take an approach like the White House does (or did) for petitions getting over 100,000 signatures receiving a formal response from the White House; maybe getting 1,000 "votes" of some kind could speed up the process of getting their attention through an official Nintendo portal of some kind? Still risky, but not as easy to exploit since it'd come with immediate human oversight.

Re: Feature: The Growing Pains of Curation on the Nintendo Switch eShop

MarioPhD

@ThomasBW84 I do wish they would have had something to say in response, even if just a relatively meaningless platitude, like "We're working to get more dev kits to the developers who want them, and we we're working to get as much great content on the platform as we can as soon as possible. We apologize to any developers who feel left out of this process, and we're working to make things right." Their unwillingness to comment at all is a bit surprising and worrying, honestly.

Re: Video: Indie Roguelike TumbleSeed Works Surprisingly Well as a Co-Op Game

MarioPhD

@Cosmic-K9 I love the replayability that comes with applying roguelike elements, and I feel like for a game like this there's a ton of potential! I feel like we've seen randomization in dungeon crawlers, shooters, and other titles before, but this really does look like a fresh take on how to implement roguelike elements, and I'm super stoked for it!

Re: Review: Puyo Puyo Tetris (Switch)

MarioPhD

@wjrandon Here's one thing Metacritic is especially handy for: Nintendolife actually gives a review score of almost 12 points lower than the "average" game review site on a given title, with an average score of a 61 for the games they've reviewed: http://www.metacritic.com/publication/nintendo-life?filter=games

I don't know that games inherently need to occasionally get a "bad" score, but I feel like for me, generally, those kinds of numbers are a good sign that the reviews here can be trusted to not just be inflated or given out to any game willing to come to a Nintendo system.

Re: Review: Mr. Shifty (Switch eShop)

MarioPhD

What leaves me miffed is that I assume they got some kind of funding (or maybe just the Nindie promo video?) For being "Switch exclusive" on consoles for the time being.... While it's not properly optimized. Nice use of that exclusivity window, guys!

Re: Nintendo Download: 20th April (North America)

MarioPhD

@faint I dunno. Wouldn't you prefer the latest and greatest from RCMADIAX over getting a lovingly remastered classic for current generation systems at the same time as it launches on other platforms? IS RCMADIAX THE ONLY DEVELOPER LEFT WITH LOYALTY TO THE WII U?!? Getting those sweet, sweet exclusives makes it all worth it and proves the eternal dominance of the Wii U! It should be pretty obvious that the Wii U is the best system ever and the Switch will forever be trash, no matter what comes out for it.

Re: Nicalis Teases a Binding of Isaac amiibo

MarioPhD

Without a second thought, yes. I'd like to see them add a cool pattern to the base, though. I mean, I don't know if Nintendo or most retailers would sign off on it, but I imagine a red pentagram would be a perfect design to go under Isaac. And I think having a random buddy character/power-up get added to your character would be a good way to use it in game. Or heck, even something small like a random Card or pill (that can either help or hurt). Limit it to one (or a few) uses per day, and I think it'd be a lot of fun in-game, and an awesome Amiibo. I bought Shovel Knight right away, and I'd happily add Isaac to the mix!
