Why is everyone whining about the fact that the Switch is constantly having games announced? Would we all prefer the Wii U with months of droughts only filled with RCMADIAX games? Sheesh. I'm hoping for a lot of third party reveals at E3, but I'm just excited that there won't be a 3 month gap post-launch with no software like we got with the Wii U.
Oh, and since this game made me remember and wonder, apparently that other retro survival horror title for the 3DS, "Back in 1995 64," is still going to happen. Hadn't heard about it for a while, so I assumed it was dead. It looks like they showed it at TGS in September of last year, so maybe that'll still happen and be better received!
I feel like procedurally generated games really beg for portability, and if this were on Switch or the 3DS (or New 3DS, even) I might take a stab at it eventually. I think the concept is brilliant, but the ever-decreasing timer doesn't sound particularly fun. I feel like removing that entirely and replacing it with more rooms of traversal being required to get to the vaccine in 30 minutes would be the way to go. Or more/stronger enemies? I don't like the idea of the window always getting tighter, since I think then I'd just never want to play again after a certain number of successes. Or maybe an option to switch between the two approaches? I feel like mapping a game like The Binding of Isaac onto a survival horror game would be positively amazing, and maybe with a sequel this title could get closer to there. Even just making it portable would be enough for me to consider giving it a shot, though.
Also worth noting: the game is made in Unity, so I imagine porting wouldn't pose a massive challenge given it's not the most intense game out there. Online connectivity might be the biggest hurdle.
I would be down with this. Plus, they could add in pointer-style controls like the Tomorrow Corporation games to allow play on the TV. I'd be all for it. I was skeptical they could work, but even Human Resource Machine, which is about grabbing small command tiles, works like a dream in tabletop and TV modes.
I know of multiple people personally who had zero interest in the Wii U (and one who I'm not certain knew what it was or if it even existed) who have already jumped onto the Switch, which gives me hope about the future for the system. Obviously it's anecdotal, but I suspect there will be more and more of that this time with people ignoring the Wii U and wanting to play the latest and greatest from Nintendo.
I won't be stunned if the Switch tops the Wii U within a year of sales if the forthcoming months are solid. If Mario Odyssey can manage the same trick that Breath of the Wild did by being an amazing new iteration of such a beloved franchise and wows critics and players in the same way, I don't think it's beyond question whatsoever. Titles like Splatoon 2 also have a genuine chance to do the same, if people look beyond their similarities to their forbears.
I'm very interested to see what the first month's sales figures look like in the financial report and see if they hit their targets. Here's hoping for a massive success for Nintendo, and by extension, increased competition, better games, more technological innovation, more risks, and better prices for gamers across platforms!
Went for it. Thought long and hard about getting it, but with how much Zelda I'm playing I don't think I need another open world game in Lego City, and I'm on the fence about MK8 since I played the heck out of it and the DLC on Wii U. Wish I had Yooka-Laylee since I'd like a 3D platformer right about now, but I think this being a unique take might be even better. Oddly enough, for a Nintendo launch, there's a shocking lack of platformers.... save for Shovel Knight, anyway.
Jokes aside, is the dock also bent? And if so, how did it fit in in the first place without scratching the screen to oblivion? Because if they played predominantly in the dock, and the dock completely covers the device, I literally don't understand how this could happen. I mean, I don't understand anyway, but their story comes into question under even the smallest amount of scrutiny.
@JHDK After traveling across the country, playing it a ton in the air, going through the airport twice, bringing the console across Portland, Oregon, in the US all day across three days in my personal bag and on public transit with a combination of playing and toting it around, I can heartily recommend the Hyperkin case and amFilm glass screen protector combo. I can't see any issues with my naked eye, and I feel like if I were to have had any issues, they would have popped up on this exceptionally rigorous trip.
I can safely say I'm an intrepid Nintendo Switch owner now, and have been bringing it around with me regularly. Definitely worth the price for the glass screen protector and case, especially since they're both great deals. Hope if you grab them they treat you similarly well!
I tend not to be "that guy," but I guess that the best that "The Greatest Arcade Golf Game Ever Made" is still just a 7/10, eh? The genre seems to have a long way to go, then.
Jokes aside, I was a bit shocked to see that despite such high praise coming less than a week ago, that it'd still only net a 7/10 for a review score. Glad to see that you can separate your personal feelings about the title and its origins from its place on a modern home console and not simply give it a rave review despite the shortcomings.
I'll definitely keep an eye on this one, since I fell in love with the Hot Shots Golf series many moons ago and would like another generally fun golf game on my newer system, especially since I've long since devoured the Mario Golf titles on 3DS.
Something about it felt a bit.... off? Something about the audio balance felt off to me, and it felt a little bit different/weird to me control-wise, but not in a way I can easily explain without more time with it. I'm hoping it's tightened up a bit for launch, and I hope launch happens ASAP. I loved the original on the Wii U, and I hope this doesn't disappoint! If nothing else, a really strong single player campaign would help a lot, but we'll see.
@Boerewors I brought 2 10,000mAh portable batteries, my Switch, a laptop, and my 3DS on a 5 hour flight recently (not for use at once in the air, but so I would have them all at my destination). I don't think there are any issues with the size of a battery considering I'm sure I had more than that in my devices combined, easily. Unless yours comes in a suitcase of its own and is powered by a uranium core, you should be able to bring it on a plane without any problems, I would think.
Wait, wait, wait. So, you're telling me, that if you launch a new console with one of the best games ever made, people will want both that game and the new console? That sounds downright nutty. Should have launched the Switch with a new Steel Diver instead. NINTENDOOMED!
@Guspaz Perhaps, but the associated legal fees seem to have put Bleem! out of business, and it contributed to the downfall of Connectix as well, so even if the CEMU folks were to "win," they could easily be financially ruined by this, especially as hobbyists. It's not as easy as winning and precedent, and literally advertising what they're up to could certainly be problematic. I imagine that Nintendo would have few problems pulling their Patreon down as part of legal action against them. Heck, I bet Nintendo contacting Patreon would be enough to get them shut down, as they could probably state that it violates their Terms of Service for "encourag[ing] others to break the law," whether that's a fair assessment of what an emulator does or not. I wouldn't imagine Patreon would want to hear from Nintendo's legal team and would be willing to side with the Cemu folks too easily for fear of being wrapped up in legal action themselves. For that matter, the high profile of this whole thing can easily work against them, and I think making money off of it in an obvious way to get that negative attention.
That's all to say that regardless to the legality of it all, I still think this Patreon is in poor taste and could cost them dearly. I'm sure if there's anything that can be done, Nintendo's going to be all over it. Again, I couldn't care less about the legality of this, but I think their approach to advertising and raising funding is powerfully stupid, and I'll be shocked if it doesn't at least get shut down.
My wife has been playing and enjoying it, which is no small feat as she rarely plays any games at all. Despite its mechanical complexities (there are a ton of button commands and shortcuts) the way it encourages you to experiment and rewards you for exploration and experimentation, plus the fact that no two people are likely to have the same path through the game makes it more fun to blaze your own trail.
I think that the old Zelda formula, which hinged on there being a definitive right and wrong approach to each dungeon, puzzle, enemy, and problem was much more excluding for many players, and given how much my wife loves playing BotW, I'd say its accessibility level is through the roof.
Something tells me that Patreon will come back to haunt them. I feel like it's a bit harder to start up and succeed in a lawsuit against some folks who just happen to be working on a project from their house and posting it online as a hobby. But publicly taking (fairly large sums of) money, and using your development of a way to pirate Nintendo's newest major title (considered by some as a new contender for greatest game of all time) as your advertisement for that money seems like a very, very bad idea.
Without caring to participate in the otherwise pointless debate about the ethics of emulation, publicly taking money for the ongoing development of software designed to help people pirate Nintendo's newest crown jewel seems like an incredibly stupid idea. I hope they're ready to have a friendly chat with Nintendo's legal team.
I got one of these emails, and I'm taking part. The survey they mention is just a means of seeing if you qualify to participate, and there's some cryptic tasks that will need to be completed on the dates listed in the screenshot'd email. I'm a participant, because while I assume the credits they mention will be for UPlay, which will be devoid of value for me, I feel like I'm obligated to provide some feedback on what I'd like to see on the Switch and try to guide them in a helpful way. A public service, if you will. Here's hoping they're open to meaningful feedback and do something with it. And also that a bunch of stupid trolls don't sign up specifically to sabotage the Switch, which being on the internet, would surprise me none whatsoever.
@Moon The way they run their sales devalues their games for anyone who's willing to wait even just a couple months, or in some cases, a couple weeks. I never buy Ubisoft games new because I know they'll be somewhere between 50--75% off if I wait 2-3 months. They've trained me to think that way, and I can only assume that platforms like Playstation and Xbox have significantly more players who only care about playing the newest AAA release on day one, and don't care (somehow) about getting good deals on their games. There's a reason I buy Nintendo games at launch: they rarely drop in price, and when they do, it's a max of about 30%, for like one week, and probably just for a digital version, and it'll be several months down the line. For anyone with a functioning brain that isn't a slave to hype, Ubisoft has really done themselves in by rapidly slashing their game prices.
@Grawlog Agreed, but conversely, I'm much less likely to invest in any of their other games on mobile, so I'm not sure how much it benefits them since I would have bought the games on their consoles anyway.
Playing FE: Heroes served only to force me into buying FE: Fates since the limits of Heroes bored me VERY quickly. I can only assume Super Mario Run would make me desperately want to play another 2D Mario game.
Also, with the Switch out now, I'll feel like an idiot buying a $10 mobile game when I could get a Switch indie title for that much. Bad timing for me, but hopefully others who still want it will be pleased! For me? Not likely, barring an eventual sale (which knowing Nintendo, yeah right....).
@PlywoodStick Yeah, I really do think this has been a pretty dang solid launch. Maybe not if you only care about major AAA titles, but then... Why even bother with the Switch if that's your only interest? The PS4 and X1 can be had for the same price and cheaper. In terms of solid and consistent forthcoming indie support and major Nintendo titles, things already look good!
@PlywoodStick Zelda, Human Resource Machine, and Blaster Master Zero can be had on other Nintendo hardware, but the rest cannot as of now. That's enough for me to be content for a console that's been out for less than 2 weeks.
If we're being nitpicky, though, we can easily say that FAST RMX, Snipperclips, and for the time being Specter of Torment are all exclusives to the Switch. If nothing else, I'm content for these to be our exclusives instead of a bunch of RCMadiax nonsense, with some degree of parity with other systems involved as well.
This has been the surprise of the Switch launch for me. Never played the original, so my enjoyment isn't just nostalgia. Definitely worth checking out if you think you even MIGHT be interested. Nice mix of old school and modern between the aesthetics and mechanics.
I already have Zelda, Snipperclips, Blaster Master Zero, Fast RMX, I Am Setsuna, and Shovel Knight Treasure Trove, all of which will be complemented shortly by The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth +, Human Resource Machine, and since I'll have a touch of eShop credit left, something else in the ~$10 range as well. Then I'll need to start selling off old games to buy MK8D pretty soon, and then there'll be new Sonic, I'm interested in Snake Pass, Shakedown Hawaii, Lego City Undercover, and Has Been Heroes.
I guess what I'm saying should be pretty obvious: the Switch clearly has no games and nobody should buy one.
I feel like a few years ago this game would have been $20, but I'm going to assume it'll be at least $30, with $40 being a real possibility. I mean, with the number of folks certain to buy on day 1 and the chance to get the rest in a few months with sales and price drops, I think $40 could happen. Hope not. $20 and I'm in on day 1.
@Ralizah I'm curious how pointer controls would work sans Wii Sensor Bar. Motion plus, perhaps? The recalibration for that might be a pain. I also seem to recall Human Resource Machine being touch-only on Wii U, even, but I haven't played that quite yet.
So, when you say "various control options," what exactly does that mean? I've been wondering if Human Resource Machine would be touchscreen and undocked only; is that the case?
@speedracer216 I think only Zelda-related ones lead to anything, tragically, so to my knowledge Waluigi may only bring you sadness. Also, you can scan them one time per day, as far as I know, so you may not get the good stuff right away. I've scanned Ocarina Link a good 5 times now and only gotten the Hat of Time thus far.
EDIT: I tried using other amiibo previously and I'm certain I was told it wouldn't do anything... maybe I scanned in too many that day? (I know Hyrule Warriors would limit the number per day.) Regardless, I'll definitely try some other ones later on to get some bonus goodies! I never seem to be able to keep enough arrows in stock!
Got the Ocarina of Time hat look from the corresponding Amiibo, and I'm content with that. Don't always use it, but happy to when I feel nostalgic. Which is to say that I always appreciate options; let players get it if they want or make it a collectible, but to flat out remove it from the game entirely seems like a pretty needless and senseless act.
@SLIGEACH_famicom Well, we now have a Famicom, WiiU, and EIRE (3) variety of Sligeach that all commented on the One Week poll. Not that I care necessarily, but it would be weird for such an insular community to have people making troll accounts of one another.
@SLIGEACH_famicom I've noticed like 3 accounts, 2 of them sprouting up in the last 24 hours or so, using the "SLIGEACH" prefix. Just thought that was odd.
@JHDK Will do! We'll see how it lasts jammed in a bag. I haven't left the house with it quite yet, so it'll be going from 0 to full speed real fast! If it breaks or thrives, I'll let you know!
@JHDK I got that case, too. It seems people dislike it for.... reasons that're irrelevant to its function as a case? Weird. I'll be flying cross-country in a week, so we'll see how it holds up!
Just to put it out there, since when I ordered them there were no reviews at all for them, I have the amFilm glass screen protectors, and just for the record, they seem to be holding up great! It fits on the screen great, stuck on with zero issues (I put it on the Switch the second I took it out of the box), and no scratches I can see so far despite a good bit of docking and undocking. They come in really sturdy packaging as well (I've had ones for my phone arrive broken in the mail), and I can definitely recommend them!
The price of not being an early adopter for me would have been knowing I could play the new Zelda literally anywhere. I'm willing to get "screwed," since when it comes to the Switch lately every early adopter seems to be classified as some kind of sucker and those waiting are the true geniuses, if it means that Nintendo knows there's immediate demand for their hardware and software and to start the system off on the right foot.
Finally took the plunge after being relentlessly tempted by NEO on the Wii U. I don't know how much I'd ever want to play this on the big screen (my wife probably wouldn't enjoy watching me play it all that much), but I DEFINITELY think a game like this works wonderfully on a handheld in my own little world. Excited to play it sometime very soon!
@Mart1ndo Ah yes, Nintendo was always better than it is now. They never released games like Urban Champion in the 80s. They only put out mediocre-to-bad games now in contrast to a pristine track record.
@RatKing64 Not to mention that BotW is a port from the Wii U, meaning it's possible to move a game onto the system and actually improve its fidelity instead of making it notably worse (I imagine the PS3 version doesn't drop frames this badly).
@bluedogrulez To my knowledge it's a full release in Japan on launch day, so it's being sold in that state right at this moment. I'm assuming Digital Foundry tested the demo to not need to pay for it in order to compare its performance, and if anything it's that much more embarrassing that THIS is what they're trying to use to entice players. Yikes.
@Steel76 They made the wrong visual compromises. I can only assume that running at 900p in docked mode would have helped tremendously, and making a few more visual sacrifices (textures, etc.) for both the portable and home versions would have been infinitely better than coming out with such a poor frame rate. It runs like Hyrule Warriors did on a Old 3DS at times when inSwitch's portable mode, which is fairly inexcusable.
@Mogster Poor optimization of launch day ports doesn't inherently mean anything. I don't doubt there are some sizable gaps between the power of the Switch and the Xbox One, but to use this particular title as anything resembling proof of that isn't very meaningful.

Re: Nintendo Switch Stays On Top in Japan Despite Sharp Week Two Decline
@PlywoodStick Yeah, I really do think this has been a pretty dang solid launch. Maybe not if you only care about major AAA titles, but then... Why even bother with the Switch if that's your only interest? The PS4 and X1 can be had for the same price and cheaper. In terms of solid and consistent forthcoming indie support and major Nintendo titles, things already look good!
Re: Nintendo Switch Stays On Top in Japan Despite Sharp Week Two Decline
@PlywoodStick You mean to tell me you wouldn't have preferred Ryse: Son of Rome and Knack to Breath of the Wild at launch??? That's crazy talk.
Re: Nintendo Switch Stays On Top in Japan Despite Sharp Week Two Decline
@PlywoodStick Zelda, Human Resource Machine, and Blaster Master Zero can be had on other Nintendo hardware, but the rest cannot as of now. That's enough for me to be content for a console that's been out for less than 2 weeks.
If we're being nitpicky, though, we can easily say that FAST RMX, Snipperclips, and for the time being Specter of Torment are all exclusives to the Switch. If nothing else, I'm content for these to be our exclusives instead of a bunch of RCMadiax nonsense, with some degree of parity with other systems involved as well.
Re: Blaster Master Zero's Switch Pro Controller Patch Is Now Available
This has been the surprise of the Switch launch for me. Never played the original, so my enjoyment isn't just nostalgia. Definitely worth checking out if you think you even MIGHT be interested. Nice mix of old school and modern between the aesthetics and mechanics.
Re: Nintendo Switch Stays On Top in Japan Despite Sharp Week Two Decline
Re: Sonic Mania Developer Clarifies Details About the Switch Port's Launch
I feel like a few years ago this game would have been $20, but I'm going to assume it'll be at least $30, with $40 being a real possibility. I mean, with the number of folks certain to buy on day 1 and the chance to get the rest in a few months with sales and price drops, I think $40 could happen. Hope not. $20 and I'm in on day 1.
Re: Trio of Tomorrow Corporation Titles Arrive on North American Switch eShop This Week
@Ralizah I'm curious how pointer controls would work sans Wii Sensor Bar. Motion plus, perhaps? The recalibration for that might be a pain. I also seem to recall Human Resource Machine being touch-only on Wii U, even, but I haven't played that quite yet.
Re: Trio of Tomorrow Corporation Titles Arrive on North American Switch eShop This Week
So, when you say "various control options," what exactly does that mean? I've been wondering if Human Resource Machine would be touchscreen and undocked only; is that the case?
Re: Swap Fire Hops Up the Wii U eShop Charts, Helped by the Fact It's Free
Don't know if I'll play it much, but hey, a free game is a free game!
Re: Guide: What Each Zelda amiibo Does In The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
Re: Breath of the Wild's Art Director on Why Link's Classic Hat is Missing
Got the Ocarina of Time hat look from the corresponding Amiibo, and I'm content with that. Don't always use it, but happy to when I feel nostalgic. Which is to say that I always appreciate options; let players get it if they want or make it a collectible, but to flat out remove it from the game entirely seems like a pretty needless and senseless act.
Re: Guide: Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories You Should Buy
@SLIGEACH_famicom Well, we now have a Famicom, WiiU, and EIRE (3) variety of Sligeach that all commented on the One Week poll. Not that I care necessarily, but it would be weird for such an insular community to have people making troll accounts of one another.
Re: Guide: Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories You Should Buy
@SLIGEACH_famicom I've noticed like 3 accounts, 2 of them sprouting up in the last 24 hours or so, using the "SLIGEACH" prefix. Just thought that was odd.
Re: Guide: Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories You Should Buy
@JHDK Will do! We'll see how it lasts jammed in a bag. I haven't left the house with it quite yet, so it'll be going from 0 to full speed real fast! If it breaks or thrives, I'll let you know!
Re: Guide: Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories You Should Buy
@SLIGEACH_famicom Are you making a bunch of parody accounts or something....?
Re: Guide: Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories You Should Buy
@JHDK I got that case, too. It seems people dislike it for.... reasons that're irrelevant to its function as a case? Weird. I'll be flying cross-country in a week, so we'll see how it holds up!
Re: Guide: Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories You Should Buy
@Loui Glad I dodged that bullet. Did you have a bad experience with
the Hori one?
Re: Guide: Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories You Should Buy
Just to put it out there, since when I ordered them there were no reviews at all for them, I have the amFilm glass screen protectors, and just for the record, they seem to be holding up great! It fits on the screen great, stuck on with zero issues (I put it on the Switch the second I took it out of the box), and no scratches I can see so far despite a good bit of docking and undocking. They come in really sturdy packaging as well (I've had ones for my phone arrive broken in the mail), and I can definitely recommend them!
Re: It's Another Nintendo Switch Teardown, With Analysis on Potential for Future Improvements
Re: Review: Fast RMX (Switch eShop)
Finally took the plunge after being relentlessly tempted by NEO on the Wii U. I don't know how much I'd ever want to play this on the big screen (my wife probably wouldn't enjoy watching me play it all that much), but I DEFINITELY think a game like this works wonderfully on a handheld in my own little world. Excited to play it sometime very soon!
Re: Review: Mario Sports Superstars (3DS)
@Mart1ndo Ah yes, Nintendo was always better than it is now. They never released games like Urban Champion in the 80s. They only put out mediocre-to-bad games now in contrast to a pristine track record.
Re: Video: Digital Foundry Pits Nintendo Switch vs. PS4 in Dragon Quest Heroes II Comparison
@Jeronan As someone who got a busted launch day Wii U, I feel your pain.
Re: Video: Digital Foundry Pits Nintendo Switch vs. PS4 in Dragon Quest Heroes II Comparison
@RatKing64 Not to mention that BotW is a port from the Wii U, meaning it's possible to move a game onto the system and actually improve its fidelity instead of making it notably worse (I imagine the PS3 version doesn't drop frames this badly).
Re: Video: Digital Foundry Pits Nintendo Switch vs. PS4 in Dragon Quest Heroes II Comparison
Yikes.
Re: Video: Digital Foundry Pits Nintendo Switch vs. PS4 in Dragon Quest Heroes II Comparison
Re: Video: Digital Foundry Pits Nintendo Switch vs. PS4 in Dragon Quest Heroes II Comparison
@Mogster Poor optimization of launch day ports doesn't inherently mean anything. I don't doubt there are some sizable gaps between the power of the Switch and the Xbox One, but to use this particular title as anything resembling proof of that isn't very meaningful.
