The Binding of Isaac has had an interesting history with Nintendo hardware - early attempts to bring the game to the eShop seemed to be rebuffed due to its general themes, but then Nintendo softened and the critically acclaimed title arrived on the New 3DS and Wii U in its 'Rebirth' form. Then there was a will it / won't it saga over its next updated version, The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth, for Wii U; that's now looking like it's off the table.
As we highlighted in an article covering the fate of Afterbirth on Wii U, it has been hinted that the next and final revision of the game could come to Switch - The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+ - which will add new content and most tellingly mod support.
Nicalis head honcho Tyrone Rodriguez now seems to have cryptically confirmed this latest version for Switch in Spring 2017. A series of tweets utilise the first words in each to spell out a message, as shown below (via Reddit)
It'd certainly be a welcome early arrival on the Switch's eShop if this is indeed a teasing confirmation. Let us know what you think in the comments.
Hat tip to SLIGEACH_EIRE for the heads up.

[sarcasm]Is he sure the switch is going to be powerful enough?[/sarcasm]
To anyone thing this is just a coincidence, let me tell you it's not.
These guys have sent players on real-life wild goose chases to figure out how to unlock characters.
Lol, that's a funny way to secretly announce it. It's not my type of game at all, but I welcome having a large variety of games to choose from for the Switch.
@crimsontadpoles My thoughts exactly. I'm not interested, but more software is better than less so it's a good thing. Also I don't want to be like some commenters around here and suggest that if I don't like something then it shouldn't be available to anybody; there's nothing more pointless than caring what other people like or how they like it.
Half-life 3 confirmed!......I mean Afterbirth+ confirmed!
Still no release date for Afterbirth on wii u...
Very good
Tha was clearly done on purpose but are they just screwing with us lol
Watch when the Switch is not powerful enough
@SanderEvers I wonder what the meaning behind "Awesome" is on the Pokémon Generations post.
You sure the Switch won't be able to handle it?
How many re-releases does this game need? Make a sequel or something new.
Oh look, a 2D sprite-based roguelike can be ported to the Switch. Speaks volumes of the new console's power, really!
@Ichiban
inb4 some wise guy replies to your comment saying "it's okay when Nintendo does it, yadda yadda"
@SanderEvers If you decode your comment with a letter cipher, then put the number through a hexadecimal converter, you get #QbEQGA2QaQU !T%I1R% . I'm not sure what this means.
They went too far adding content to the game. I was happy with the original version with Danny B soundtrack. Then it just keep growing and growing with extra content that not really add much to the gameplay.
Nevertheless it's an awesome game and it will be great to have it on the Switch. I might finally get it to play it on the go.
Been loving it on Wii U and my New 3DS, definitely up for more on this Switch! Can't wait for all of my on the big screen and on the go games to be 100 percent synced at all times on the Switch!
If it is true then it also probably means the Wii U version won't be heavily discounted for a good while.
@Ichiban it's okay when Nintendo does it, yada yada
Good to hear. I've been low on Roguelikes, and once the Switch is out, I want to give this one a try
How did people even figure this out? On a related note it's a welcome addition to the switch library. Played the first one and it's quite a fun game.
@Zanark Because people have learn to check, double check, and then check again ad infinitum for a deeper meaning within these tweets.
I just... Really don't like these games.
Hard to be excited.
Jedi Internet Tricks
Nice way to not break NDA lol. Well played.
Man I've sunk over 2000 hours on this on Steam and it will be weird starting again on Switch. I have it on N3DS but I can't get it to Real Platinum God without the Lost starting with Holy Mantle. Yes, I know I'm a noob. Also let's hope they don't have Peep crashing the Switch like it does my N3DS.
@AlexSora89 You've clearly either never played it or haven't had that many tears flying at once. Believe me, my PC is pretty powerful and that even struggles sometimes with the sheer number of particles on screen at once. For anyone that's played it, Dr Fetus + Sad bombs + Mutant Spider + Parasite + Cricket's Body will destroy both your eyes and your PC.
@Billsama
So basically, the gameplay remains the same in all versions, and they're just adding more wicked items and bosses? Or does each expansion count as a separate game?
Also, I gave the series a try yesterday, and I wonder if I'm playing it the wrong way, because I keep finding rooms with coins and other things that seem to be out of reach, or I don't have enough bombs to break through all the rocks, so I go to the boss, exit the stage, and then there's no return. Makes me feel uncomfortable that I'm missing stuff. Is it meant to be played this way? This roguelike thing is new to me.
It takes all kinds of dynamics to make for a versatile game library; this'd have the Switch covered in terms of pretentiousness, tastelessness, and phony symbolism.
I wanna see Shigeru hype this one just for the laughs. He'd be wearing a disembodied womb for a hat or what-have-you.
@Ichiban It's DLC, just like Afterbirth was.
@nessisonett Always great to see someone with experience on the matter It would probably help a bit more if screenshots and official video material would show more of the insanity possible instead of the starting gameplay which then is the part people assume isn't running properly.
More likely than not, that's not true, it's just that the "weaker" consoles struggle too fast, especially on Greed Mode where the madness is basically guaranteed.
@Popful My first response answers the first part but yes, it adds new Items, enemies, bosses, a character and more stuff to play with.
As for the second part: There's nothing really missable per se as it's randomly generated. Most of the time you will just miss other coins, keys and bombs. The more you get, the easier things will be but there remain other opportunities throughout each run. Sometimes there are actual Items out of range but you will always be able to get them in another run.
As you get better, you will be able to tell how to use your keys and bombs effectively. Especially finding the secret rooms or "tinted rocks" (which are tinted in a blueish color and have an X somewhere on them) which are usually worthwhile. You may want to check the wiki for more information however, just be aware of potential spoilers about how the game progresses http://bindingofisaacrebirth.gamepedia.com/Binding_of_Isaac:_Rebirth_Wiki
@nessisonett
One word: Recca.
That game is a bullet hell with many things flying at once and it was made for an NES. It could be released for consoles that supposedly struggle with it and we could live with the resulting slowdown during the craziest moments. It's nothing completely unheard of.
I love it. Isaac Rebirth is one of my Top 10 Wii U eShop games. Yes, it took a while to get into it, but it didn't take long to realize how rich and fun this game is.
I guess Afterbirth is not coming for Wii U anymore, but I'm fine with Afterbirth+ on Switch.
@BlackHeart
Okay, thank you. I'll probably have to try and clear it once with whatever results to see how it goes.
By the way, isn't this game from the developer of Super Meat Boy? That blasted thing nearly cracked me as I was trying to beat the clock on every stage. If that experience is anything to go by, The Binding of Isaac may turn out to be another trip into a nightmare, and I don't think I'll want more of it after I'm done with Rebirth. That is, if Rebirth is not done with me first.
@Popful You're welcome and good luck to you
Edmund McMillen is the brain, designer and artist behind both of these games, yes, but the devs/programmers are different people.
Super Meat Boy is much more difficult however as there are no crazy Items to make life easier for you. Isaac can be broken (intentionally) in so many ways and that is where the fun comes from. Usually it is that one Item that can make a run.
There is a however a secret character that is infamously difficult to play as but even then you have the option of restarting and until you get some really good stuff on the first floor.
@BlackHeart
Information absorbed successfully. Proceeding into the basement. With caution.
@Popful I'm not an expert on the game and there's a whole community around it that might be able to give a better answer, but for what I have read in the devlog and having played the original and a little bit of Afterbirth I can said that is pretty much what they are doing. The new content often come in the form of new items and new rooms.
You are playing the game right. The thing is, the game is procedurally generated, that means everytime you start a new play, the game will pick items and room, from a pool of unlocked ones and build your map from that.
That way, everytime you play, the game will feel different, and as you play you will unlock new content that will be added to the pool and available in your next quests.
That's pretty rad. But, when the number of items, enemies and rooms available are more than 100, the game can feel a bit overstuffed and random. Some people love it for that though.
@Billsama
But does it keep track of what items, enemies and rooms you've already encountered? If not, and every playthrough is completely random, there's always a chance you won't ever see a certain something from that pool of content.
I also wanted to clarify this. Does Afterbirth include everything from Rebirth plus more, or is it composed of entirely new content and you've got to play Rebirth separately?
@Popful The game only keeps track if you've gotten an Item at least once, finding every single Item and unlocking every secret is the requirement for True Platinum God in Rebirth and 1001% in Afterbirth.
Each run is random and based around what you've unlocked already. Aside from that, nothing from the previous run affects the other (except for one Item in Afterbirth but that's good and how it's meant to work) and everything and everybody can be found and fought again. You will play the game a great many times to unlock absolutely everything so you will find most of the Items eventually. There are ways to break the game to even be able to get most in one run, in Afterbirth it's even possible to get absolutely every Item in one run, provided you've unlocked them all.
Afterbirth is no new mode or something like that, it just makes the game larger by adding new stuff to it. The game plays the same but you will find new Items in old places but also more rooms, enemies, bosses and even chapters for you to find. Especially Greed Mode which does change the way you play but the gameplay itself remains the same.
@BlackHeart
Thanks again! It's all clear now.
@Popful @BlackHeart already answered. Also you can find details about what is added in each version here: http://bindingofisaac.com/
The guys have a good list with every new addition.
@Billsama
This'll be helpful. Thank you.
Love Binding of Isaac and it is still one of the very few games I go back to time and time again.
There is also an update on bindingofisaac.com that states it coming to Ps4, Xbox One and one more console.
The real question: since I purchased it on WiiU, will I get any kind of discount on Switch?
@Clownshoes
That's more problems with the software itself, I was referring to the time he said the Wii U wasn't much more powerful than the Vita:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/11/poor_odds_of_the_binding_of_isaac_afterbirth_coming_to_wii_u_as_nicalis_says_its_not_much_more_powerful_than_a_ps_vita
@nessisonett Add Soy Milk for maximum slowdown
