I really disagree with the sentiment that this game looks "worse" than SV. Like sure it doesn't look AMAZING graphics wise, but this seems to polish at least some of the rough edges of SV's texture quality. Granted that's not saying a lot, they'd have to actively be trying to make a game look worse than SV if it did.
Just a small nitpick, but can you really say two games are both 10/10 when there’s enough of a divide between them to warrant an entire article? Sorta feels like it devalues the idea of a real perfect score…
If they'd released these WAY earlier than I probably would've gotten one despite the price, but we're so deep into this by now and I already have 2 reusable ones, so can't really justify a third at that price...
I hope this means they won't bother with trying to distribute something like this via Pokemon Home anymore. The main game's Mystery Gift functionality works just fine, so why not just use that?
...but I'm sure they will do it again anyway, as a means to push people to download Home.
@AJDarkstar I mean I'm with ya for the most part. I was still under the impression that they hadn't, so that shows what faith I have in them when it comes to these old ports. The fact that they fixed any version at all was kind of a shock.
@gaga64 The only glitch regarding the save crystal I've ever heard of in FFVII is that the game had a small chance of preventing you from leaving the final cavern if you set it down in a specific room (the one where the party splits up). So most likely it's that, but there might be something else, I don't know 100%
It's actually rather amazing how much attention has been given to the Switch version of this port compared to the others. As far as I'm aware, NONE of the fixes the Switch version got were done to any other, including the music one, which was definitely the biggest complaint I'd seen around.
Unless you care about achievements (which is admittedly a big deal for some), this has kinda become the go-to console for this game if the Switch is an option for you.
@g_ruz Yeah same here, although I do find it incredibly hilarious how much the chat page looks like it could/should display the chat back to you in app, but instead remains completely empty and useless.
They really need to add the title of the games under the images now if they're gonna keep this. It's actually rather frustrating when you want to see the name of the game again, and either have to wait for it to scroll through all the images or open the game's page up.
Frankly I have NO IDEA why the names have only ever been in the "Featured" section to begin with, but at least previously you could see it via the thumbnail in the other menus. This update made that significantly more inconvenient...
Why did this game ever get the huge amount of flack it did in the first place? It's not like BotW was the first game of it's kind, and even if it was why would you not want to see other developers take an idea that people loved and try to do some new things with it? If it was a cheap looking clone that added literally nothing to what BotW did, I'd understand, but from the get go it was pretty clear that mechanically this game had things BotW didn't, so why not give a game an opportunity to innovate a little instead of just raging cause it's so similar to another game??
Odds are the main thing going on is account selling, not as much in the way of actual "hacking", though that could still be happening a little bit too I suppose. But account selling and trading is a massive part of gacha gaming, and pretty much every single game of this variety has a community of people involved in this stuff. Hell, even some of the larger ones have entire forums or Discord servers dedicated to account selling and trading, because to a lot of people's eyes it's a way better cost investment to pay for a lot of guaranteed good stuff on an account than to potentially spend tons in an effort to get something good from a brand new account.
Another likely factor is whales / "dolphins" who spend money on the game but want to take advantage of things like regional cost differences and exchange rates, by temporarily giving their account so someone in a different region who can buy in game currencies at a much better cost. (Apologies if there's a more specific term for this practice that I'm unaware of. I play a couple games like this, but haven't ever personally dabbled in these kind of practices, so idk)
This type of happens with all gacha games. That's not to say the people doing it are justified necessarily, but it's just something that comes with the territory.
Does this fix the slowed down music issue, or was that already fixed before? I've been waiting for that to be addressed before dropping the money for these.
Hold on... Were people under the impression that Pokemon Home wasn't going to allow for transfering of alternate forms of Pokemon within the Galar Dex? I thought that was incredibly old news, basically since Pokemon Home was announced. Of course we'd be able to transfer Pink Gastrodon. We're also gonna be able to transfer Kanto Ponyta and such too.
While I heavily disagree with the reasoning, I think this is definitely for the best. I absolutely love Dynamax/Gigantamax during raid battles, but in a more competitive setting it feels very out of place. Maybe because I see it as essentially a bare-bones version of Mega Evolution, but it feels like a very empty mechanic to me that doesn't make the competitive experience any more fun.
@Tempestryke I think a certain level of disappointment is understandable sure. Myself somewhat included in that camp as well. Some reactions rub me the wrong way however, such as using this as another example of Gamefreak's deteriorating quality. Sure only one new Pokemon was shown, but the actual presentation and animation quality during certain points was quite nice.
I'm not necessarily really trying to defend Gamefreak here either. I think they should be criticized 100%, however they should be criticized when it's warranted, otherwise the fanbase just comes across as whiny babies any time they do literally anything. Peeps should save the soapbox complaints for when it is truly warranted, and this is not one of those times if you ask me.
While I 100% understand and even agree with some on the cynicism towards Sword and Shield's development, I can't wrap my head around the people saying this was a waste of time and should've been cut down significantly.
Did... did y'all really think they intended for everyone to watch the whole thing or something?
How has this been up for hours, with multiple comments complaining about the spoilers, yet somehow still doesn't have a simple spoiler warning near the top?? It's an astonishingly easy task to do, and will buy at least a little extra appreciation from the people reading this.
Thank GOD I actually read the comments to this first instead of reading the article itself... I appreciate y'all who called em out on this very, very much! ♥
@Euler Only if you don't go by the official tournament rulings and such. Older sets get cycled out of play now and then, with a lot of Pokemon not yet having been included in newer ones before they're cut.
I think a little clarification in the first part would be nice. Is this trying to say if there's a wall or two between the Switch and the router that you should stick with 2.4GHz, or regardless you should switch to 5GHz? I realize this is about creating the most optimal connection, but I think it's worth mentioning in that section, for those who simply can't relocate their router, which connection type is best if there has to be a wall or two in between them.
@Kalmaro I'd say if you can actually get together with a group of friends who you enjoy playing with and can learn with you/teach you then it's worth giving a go for sure.
If not, then just be prepared to get bodied a lot at the start potentially. It's one of those games that has a pretty hardcore, competitive player base, which can be very off putting for new players if you aren't ready for that.
While very tempting to pre-order the "Joyeuse" edition, it's going to be a while until I'm ready to actually play this. I still have to get through CCC and Extella first, and by then I'm sure the standard version of the game will have gone on sale at some point, and that's good enough for me.
Besides then I can blow the money I saved on digital jpegs in Grand Order! Win/Win!
@RandomNerds Yeah regardless of whether or not you think Nintendo cares too much about limiting custom modifications, I'd say pretty much everyone would agree that the Switch needs more built in personalization. Even if it's not to the level of the 3DS, more than just light or dark theme would be appreciated.
To me though the issue is much more about buying good will between Nintendo and its fans. While clearly not everyone cares too deeply about this particular issue, anything that limits friction is good in my book. Especially when there's been little scares here and there of Nintendo considering moving more to the mobile phone market. Any little thing that could motivate them to make that move should be avoided if possible.
> "Do you think Nintendo should take any steps necessary to prevent further hacking"
At this point I firmly believe it is HEAVILY in everyone's best interest, including Nintendo's, for them to stop. Obviously keep efforts towards preventing hacking that impacts online gameplay, but all trying to prevent personal aesthetic and functional mods is doing is causing a rift between Nintendo and it's fans. Nintendo themselves must be getting beyond frustrated with their consumers every time they have to fix something, and many consumers who just want to adjust the product they rightfully own feel like Nintendo is trying to tear some piece of that ownership away from them by constantly preventing these modifications, or at least trying to prevent them.
I love Nintendo, and frankly they're one of the few things I appreciate about the world of gaming today, but even as someone who really doesn't care about hacking or modding their Switch, please focus your efforts on other things, for your own sake and everyone else's.
While this ranking doesn't really specifically say anything about this, I'll use this platform to rant a bit about something that's always really ticked me off when people talk about the Pokemon games...
While they're not my favorite games of the franchise, I think X/Y get very unfairly maligned for having "no story" and whatnot. I have never once even remotely understood that complaint. Sure your character's involvement in the story is quite minimal compared to some of the other Pokemon games, but on top of having basically just as much story with the villains as most other games do, it also adds quite a lot to the overall lore and world building of the main series Pokemon games too. Personally I still hold them in regard as my favorite 3DS era games, although ORAS is very close competition.

Good to hear! Me and a friend have been tag teaming these pretty hard, especially trying to find/help against any of the shiny ones.

@gaga64 I was actually not aware of that one. It sounds like a fairly realistic one to happen without trying as well.

@Borngis Oh is it? Maybe the Switch version just got some of the updates first then or something. That said I don't really keep up with xbox news.

@ShadJV I think so yeah, though usually not very many each time aside the first game. First game got rid of quite a few from my understanding.
