Overall, this was my least favorite Pokemon generation. It wasn't necessarily the objective worst, but Sun was easily my least favorite Pokemon game ever and was a huge let down having just come off of playing Black 2 for the first time. Didn't even pick up USUM because well... didn't like the original probably wouldn't like the second. Let's Go wasn't bad, it was honestly pretty fun. Nothing mindblowing, but harmless. Still, I'm interested to see what we get in this year's entry and hopefully the series will head in a direction that interest me more.
@fafonio The 17 million (was 20) prediction is for system sales of this fiscal year (April 2018 through March 2019). The 32 million is lifetime sales so far.
@electrolite77 Those are certainly good consoles to be ahead of. Also, as a side note, I always appreciate your usage of actual numbers to back up your points.
@electrolite77 Still, hitting the goal or not, around 35 million in a little over 2 years is phenomenal. It's so refreshing to talk about Nintendo to general people and hear "Oh the Switch, I've heard that's a pretty cool system," instead of "The Wii U? What's that?"
7 exclusives revealed so far isn't too shabby, but I expect more to be revealed as the year goes on. For me, my most anticipated games are coming early with Yoshi and Fire Emblem. But either way, I think a direct would be nice. We know about quite a few games, but we have no idea when most of them will be released.
@EmmatheBest And people will keep saying it until the game releases. Despite the fact that Nintendo has proven time and time again in the Switch era that just because we haven't seen a lot of the game yet, doesn't mean it's not coming out when they say it is. Looking at the Fire Emblem series, Echoes wasn't even revealed until 4 months before it's Japanese release (5 for the west) and Fates was revealed around 5 months before it's release. I'm not saying it won't get a delay, but how about we stop writing games off completely just because we haven't gotten a direct.
With all the news on Smash's success, which is outstandingly impressive, I wasn't sure on how successful Pokemon and Mario Party were. I knew they had sold well, but wow. 10 million for LG is really solid and Super Mario Party is standing in a great position.
Missing the 20 million isn't the biggest deal as this year will still see a healthy increase over last years sales. More importantly, this puts the Switch just behind the N64 and it dhould pass that within the next quarter (if it hasn't already).
Also, can we stop pretending that any release schedule this quarter would make the 20 million obtainable. They would need to sell over 5 million systems which would be a highly unrealistic shift in momentum for the January-march time span.
They're definitely showing some confidence that the first one will do well. Honestly, that's pretty earned though. The first trailer has done well so far and they are working with the most profitable media franchise of all time.
Understandable. It's nice to see a developer basically confirm that the majority of 3ds owners who played indies have moved on to the Switch. Many other developers have seemed to catch on to that fact.
Back in highschool when this originally released I would have been super into this. But four years later I don't really have an interest, certainly interesting to see how one's taste can change over time. Also, that price certainly makes the choice to skip this even easier.
Good to see, and I bet we'll see the same thing this year with the Switch hitting it's stride as the PS4 and XB1 head into their final years. Overall though, the industry appears to be in a healthy position with all 3 consoles having some form of success.
Always interesting to see how well Nintendo titles sell over the long term, with 3 of the 5 "not 2018" titles belonging to them. And as always these list don't really give an accurate representation of how how well Pokemon did. While I doubt it would break the top 10, it would certainly be higher up than 20th.
@Evilworm 22 million was at the beginning of October and right before the biggest sales time of year. If they even matched last year's holiday sales they'll be around 30 million at this moment (and most signs point to them having blown past last year's holiday sales). If your going to argue that a console with 30 million sales in less than 2 years might drop off to sell less than 10 million in the next 3 or 4 years, than it's very obvious you have no idea how console sales work.
Hmmmmm, I want this really bad, but I'd rather wait till we get a translated version. I guess there's no guarantee that we'll get it in the West, but the Fire Emblem Awakening art book did come her and that gives me a little more confidence.
@NintyNate I guess I can get that, haha. I also already own most of these titles being ported but I don't mind these ports existing for those who haven't played them.
I'm still undecided on this one. Personally, presentation aside, it's probably my second favorite 2D Mario title. But 60 dollars is a hefty price to pay just to play the game portable.
@NintyNate I'm sure the amount of time and effort used here is relatively very small compared an actual new game. While we have no actual confirmation on how much time a port takes or how big the teams are for them, I doubt that the resources for even 5 of these ports matches the resources needed for a brand new game. Complaining about ports is absolutely a needless thing, because if we didn't get the port we wouldn't be getting something new, we'd get absolutely nothing.
I'd like to see Nintendo continue on with the hybrid plan. They've always been the king of handheld gaming so bringing that success and using it to reinvigorate their console lineup worked and still works great. Perhaps call it the Switch 2, I don't know. I just know I don't want to go back to my Nintendo games being home locked again after this. Still, we have some time before we actually have to start thinking about this.
@Heavyarms55 I'd say the majority of people have families that do tend to care about them, and in such cases choosing family over friends is generally a no brainer. So I don't think this stat is necessarily too surprising. However, I recognize that many people have crappy families and such people shouldn't feel obligated to ever choose them over friends who actually care about them. If a family doesn't treat you well you shouldn't be obligated to deal with that.
This my last weekend before college starts back up for the spring semester, so I'll take advantage of my last weekend of complete freedom for 3 months by finishing up Bayonetta 1 and hopefully making some substantial progress in World of Light. Will also be continuing my Path of Radiance playthrough, getting pretty close to the ending.
I don't know about a portable only Switch. I know a lot of people think of the Switch as a powerful handheld, which of course it is. But the ability to Switch really sells the fact that these are console quality games on the go, which the marketing has been clear about. The clear marketing is a big reason the Switch has done so well and I doubt they'd want to screw it up. A "pro" model, same size more powerful, could work though and wouldn't interfere too much.
@Patron I don't know if that's really very likely. I think Nintendo has found quite a bit of value in focusing all of it's main development on the Switch. I think the move of Pokemon to Switch all but confirmed the end of the split focus between 2 systems for the Switches lifetime.
SNES, N64, and Gamecube games would all be appreciated. I really like the overall idea of how Switch online handles NES games. It's a nice cheap way to play a bunch of NES games. But... they're NES games. Most of them are fun looks at gaming history, but only a few of them are fun to sink any real time into (N64 also has this problem imo but definitely less so).
Fire Emblem Three Houses and Yoshi's Crafed World are definitely my most anticipated titles! Animal Crossing has always been one of my favorite series but I don't know what to expect from the new title just yet. I hope to get a healthy bit of evolution like what we got with New Leaf. Definitely don't want another City Folk situation.
About Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4, it is true we have no idea when they're coming out. But we've known about them for over a year at this point and have no idea how far into development they were when announced. I think it's fine to speculate 2019 as a possible release date because there's literally no argument against it. I think it's just as likely Metroid and Bayonetta release this year as it is they don't.
@Painay Smash Ultimate is not an "enhanced version" of Smash Wii U. A significant amount of content in Ultimate was in no way in Wii U. Some assets were brought over from Wii U before being heavily enhanced but not enough to call the entire game an "enhanced version". Ultimate also had a standard 3 year deployment like all the other Smash games (excet Melee's hellish development cycle). Even then, development time doesn't necessarily have to control the reveal schedule of a game so Smash acts as a perfectly fine comparison here regardless of what the development cycles of the 2 games look like.
Edit: Definitely agree with the rushed product sentiment though. If the Yoshi's delay this year had any positive outcome, it showed that Nintendo is still willing to give developers the time they need to make quality games and that will always be more important than anything else.
@RyanSilberman Sonic's marketing team is just bad. With mascot based properties, fans can get pretty judgy with how a character has been adapted into a new form of media. With Detective Pikachu they smartly knew this and put it all on the table in the trailer. The results spoke for themselves. A lot of people have differing opinions on how the Pokemon look. Buttttt, many people will agree that, cute or creepy, the Pokemon seem to work in the context of the movie. More importantly, the trailer is well constructed and makes the movie seem like it will be at least be an entertaining ride. By presenting the Pokemon in the same context the movie will presumably be presenting them in, the seemingly quality movie was allowed to speak for itself and get past any criticism some fans may have with the Pokemon designs. Sonic hasn't done this. They have revealed only the character, not even in full, and have left only that out there for people to judge. The reactions have (predictably) not been positive and as of such the marketing team will be facing a now even more uphill battle from here on out (more uphill than most live action video game adaptations already face).
@JackEatsSparrows More importantly, we didn't see ANY of Nintendo's big three holiday releases until partway through the year. Heck, we didn't even know about Mario Party and Smash at the beginning of the year. And Tennis Aces was announced less than 6 months before release as well. I think the lesson 2018 taught us was that with modern day Nintendo we'll likely never be able to expect exactly how the year will turn out. Bayo 3 and Metroid may both very well be coming out next year. They also may not be. The point is that "haven't seen any footage from this title yet" isn't really a valid argument anymore.
At this point, they probably have a pretty good idea on whether they will or not with the "Holiday" quarter finishing up today. October-December were going to be the "make it or break it" months for reaching the 20 million goal as Jan-March are usually slower months riding the momentum coattails of the Holiday season. Still, it'll be a good month till the next investor meeting and we get solid numbers. The headlines throughout this season have been rather positive so whatever the numbers are I'm sure they'll be good. Still, reach the goal or not the Switch's second year is looking rather successful and sould help cement the Switch as one of Nintendo's successful consoles.
@TheFox "It sounds like this game wasn't given the obsessive quality control that Nintendo is famous for."
I don't think this is too much cause for concern. With how many characters, items, AT and Pokemon, stages, modes, etc. there are, the shear amount of things to play test in this game is absolutely massive I'm sure. Every Smash game always ships with quite a few glitches, but none of then are ever very likely to show up in a match. This game has been tested enough that the things we're finding are the kind of things you're only going to find once millions of people start playing the game.
Been playing quite a but of Smash unsurprisingly. But I need to go and finally beat Let's Go Eevee, and I've also been slowly tackling Doom which I bought during the black Friday sale. Still, all of this has kind of taken a back seat to my decision to replay Fire Emblem Path of Radiance. An amazing game that deserves some kind of second chance.
@rjejr The problem with all of those games is that as @electrolite77 pointed out for the NSM series, they all sold pretty poorly in comparison to the other games in their series. Yes the "all games sold poorly" narrative doesn't entirely hold up, but the fact is that most of these games failed to live up to thier full potential because they were on a system with such a small user base. That represents lost potential money for Nintendo which is why they're doing this now. When assessing how well a game has sold, we also need to make sure to compare it other games in the series.
@Kinoen Fire Emblem and Yoshi will absolutely sell no where near the numbers Smash is seeing. However, seeing as neither are holiday releases they're certainly not supposed to. Pokemon on the other hand... definitely could. You may notice that many countries are adding "fastest selling CONSOLE game." This is because Sun and Moon are THE fastest selling (handheld or console) games in Nintendo history
I swear, people on this site. Developer or publisher gives a dodgey response: "They're just speaking out their butt, why can't developers just be honest". Developer gives completely honest answer that represents the reality for a lot of series "how dare they beg us to buy he game". This isn't an attempt at begging, this is the good to honest truth. Suda51 has always been known for saying how it is. This is no different.
Now of course, putting himself in a situation where this game is deciding the fate of No More Heroes might not have been his best choice. Regardless of the game's quality it isn't the kind of game to light up the sales charts and I can't really see it doing well.
And with this the strange journey of the classics line comes to an end it seems. I got the SNES classic as many of the games it had on it are ones I consider to have aged rather well. In fact, as a whole, the SNES aged quite well. The NES classic on the other hand I never did get, as I have no real nostalgia for it and very few games have aged well. And even those that have aren't my favorites. Still, I'm glad they did a reprint so everyone who wanted one could get one.
As for future classic consoles, I quite doubt it. While both the N64 and Gamecube are certainly well remembered neither had as big of a cultural impact as their predecessors and I doubt either mini would be able to continue this success.
Still, since this appears to be the case, I hope we see SNES games on Switch soon. And I'll still hold out hope for Gamecube someday. There are a lot of Gamcube games that are very hard to play today.
@ritouf Eh, not really. 1.5 million sales through the month of October plus the holiday months will probably put it on par with the rest of the series. Outside of a few key titles, the Mario Party series usually doesn't sell as stellar as Smash and Pokemon. As of now, Super Mario Party will probably be considered a success for the series
@sanderev That's also true. That's how I got Marth. Still, in that case I avoided doing that for anybody else to avoid WoL spoilers. Part of the fun with WoL is seeing what's around the corner next. I just knew Marth was so early from Preview footage.
@TheOpponent It actually isn't RNG, both Smash mode and Classic mode have their own seperate order of unlocks. For example, Sonic is the 17th character to unlock by just Smashing, but you can get him right away by playing through Mario's classic mode. You can easily get your favorite characters earlier by looking up the order for both modes and utilizing that.
@Tirza "A single Nintendo game sold more than all Metal Gear games... combined!"
You uh... you really gotta be screwing with everybody here right? Because the Metal Gear Solid series has sold almost 50 million copies worldwide. So technically you're right if the game you're talking about is Wii Sports. But that hardly makes MGS irrelevant. In fact, it makes it far more "relevant" than a lot of Nintendo series.
@subpopz I don't believe they are using "grind" in the general gaming/rpg sense. The general loop of gameplay in WoL appears to be doing match after match after match. However, each match has different, pre-set criteria. It's kind of like event mode with a world map.
I mean, Kirby is absolutely the character that makes the most sense. I've been saying for years that Kirby is canonically Nintendo's strongest character.
Also, Pacter's comparison to the 3ds pricecut is rather strange. If the Switch gets a price cut next year (which I could definitely see), it would be a fairly normal cut seen by most healthy systems like what the PS4 has seen throughout the years. The 3DS price cut was a last ditch effort to save a failing console before it fell into the realm of obscurity like the Wii U eventually did. It ended up being a very smart business move and did save the 3DS, sure, but a Switch price cut would be a standard strategy to keep a healthy console healthy.
Honestly, this isn't too bad of a prediction. Though, I don't think the missed target means bad or poor sales. It's still an increase in sales over last year and shows the Switch has a healthy life ahead of it.
@Shadowmoon522 Yes, but seeing as the entire point of the game is to capture new players and bring then over to the main series, I don't think it's very accurate to classify it completely as a spin-off (such as conquest or mystery dungeon).

Re: Video: Take A Look At New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe In This Introduction Trailer
Re: Smash Bros. Ultimate Becomes Fastest-Selling Home Console Nintendo Game In Australia And New Zealand
Re: An "Epic" No More Heroes 3 Could Be On The Cards If Travis Strikes Again Sells Well, Says Suda51
Re: NES And SNES Classic Consoles Won't Be Restocked After Holidays, "Once They Sell Out, They’re Gone"
Re: Smash Bros. Ultimate Sold 1.2 Million Copies In Japan During Launch Week
Re: Locked Character Roster In Smash Bros. Ultimate Raises Concerns About Tournament Play
@BensonUii Fair enough I guess, I haven't been to a tournament bigger than 30 people before so I'll listen to those with more experience on this one.
Re: Locked Character Roster In Smash Bros. Ultimate Raises Concerns About Tournament Play
@BensonUii The weekly I go to has people bring their own systems and it isn't a problem at all. Everybody's systems and games play fine.
Re: Locked Character Roster In Smash Bros. Ultimate Raises Concerns About Tournament Play
@sanderev That's also true. That's how I got Marth. Still, in that case I avoided doing that for anybody else to avoid WoL spoilers. Part of the fun with WoL is seeing what's around the corner next. I just knew Marth was so early from Preview footage.
Re: Locked Character Roster In Smash Bros. Ultimate Raises Concerns About Tournament Play
Re: Review: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - The Absolute Pinnacle Of Nintendo's Fighting Series
Re: Review: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - The Absolute Pinnacle Of Nintendo's Fighting Series
Been counting down the days since e3! In 8 1/2 hours, my waiting will have finally payed off.
Re: Smash Bros. Ultimate's World Of Light Mode Focuses On The "Loot Grind", Rather Than Epic Cutscenes
@subpopz I don't believe they are using "grind" in the general gaming/rpg sense. The general loop of gameplay in WoL appears to be doing match after match after match. However, each match has different, pre-set criteria. It's kind of like event mode with a world map.
Re: Sakurai Reveals Why Kirby Was The Only One Who Survived The Smash Ultimate Apocalypse
I mean, Kirby is absolutely the character that makes the most sense. I've been saying for years that Kirby is canonically Nintendo's strongest character.
Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Will Have A Day-One Update, But Only For Those Who Buy Physical
The ability to permanently save your favorite replays is golden and will make the feature far more useful here than it was in Smash 4 initially.
Re: Analysts Believe Nintendo Will Fall Short Of Its Target To Ship 38 Million Switch By March 2019
Re: Analysts Believe Nintendo Will Fall Short Of Its Target To Ship 38 Million Switch By March 2019
Honestly, this isn't too bad of a prediction. Though, I don't think the missed target means bad or poor sales. It's still an increase in sales over last year and shows the Switch has a healthy life ahead of it.
Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Is The Best Pre-Selling Game Of The Series To Date, And On Switch
@Shadowmoon522 Yes, but seeing as the entire point of the game is to capture new players and bring then over to the main series, I don't think it's very accurate to classify it completely as a spin-off (such as conquest or mystery dungeon).
