@nocdaes NMS was seen as an “impossible port” because it generates everything on the fly via algorithm. This is very CPU-intensive, a known weakness of the Switch.
@HOUSE I’ve played it on Steam Deck, locking the refresh rate to 40. It’s very stable, with only minor loading fluctuations in the high 30s. Even when leaving and landing on a planet, it’s definitely never tanked to 15 FPS.
@rjejr The Steam Deck has roughly PS4-level power and is doing very well performance-wise. PS4 Pro-level power is more than double that, which would make it a serious power hog and heat generator. It just wouldn’t be feasible for a portable device.
GoldenEye. Because while you can emulate it, from experience I’ve learned that it takes some finagling to get running particularly well. While Nintendo’s emulation history for this service isn’t flawless, they obviously know it’s a big deal, so I expect they’ll be keen to get it right.
@spacely_sprockets We already know what it is. It’s the rom in an emulator wrapper with a bit of a resolution bump. Just like every other N64 game added to the service. It seems silly to suddenly hold GoldenEye to a different standard like it’s a massive standalone release.
Edit: Also, it’ll include 4-player offline multiplayer because the original game does. You’d just need 4 controllers.
Oh, pack it in. Subscription services have negatives, obviously. And there are some people that are too gung-ho with wanting everything to be a subscription. But you’re being intentionally obtuse if you’re trying to insist that some people can’t be genuinely satisfied with a large “rented” library for a low price.
Not everyone can afford the space required for a large physical library. Not everyone can even afford the cost of a large digital library. Some people just want to spend a few of their currency to play a few games every now and again. They’re not angrily fighting for ‘ownership’ of everything and that’s fine. It doesn’t make them idiots.
Edit: I’m the only person who had a problem with you? My original response calling you obnoxious had 9 likes at last glance and may have climbed further since.
@russell-marlow Because you’re being needlessly antagonistic to others in the process of giving your opinion. I totally understand anyone not liking subscription services. But actively mocking and belittling others because they won’t spend their money how you want them to is obnoxious.
@EVIL-C It’s a bit harsh to call it “bad journalism”. They’re a Nintendo website covering a game coming to a Nintendo service. It could be argued that mentioning the XBox remaster would just muddy the waters.
@russell-marlow Dude, we get it, the fact that you can emulate GoldenEye on your Steam Deck makes you better than everyone here. Hell, I’ve got a Steam Deck and have done just that. And I still think you’re being obnoxious.
@link3710 Let’s break down your waffle shall we? You know the film is bad because it will be a flop. Unless it makes money which is worse because Nintendo would start creatively pillaging Mario. But then if it actually loses money, Nintendo will rip the Mario IP to shreds in a desperate attempt to salvage it. It’s circular nonsense built on assumptions and a personal dislike of the film. You’re “guaranteeing” a terrible outcome regardless of actual success based on nothing of substance. You’re just eager to tear down a film that artistically offends you. I don’t care, you do you. I’m all for personal tastes. But stop trying to spin what you’re saying.
@link3710 Actually no. You don’t want “more people to have more good movies” you want more movies that you deem to be good to exist. You’re effectively saying that if a film you don’t like does well they’re all wrong and ruining an IP. To each their own but that’s a literal snobbish mindset.
For all, the bragging done pre-reveal, Fight Forever looks incredibly rough and amateurish. If I remember correctly, part of the reason WWE 2k20 was a shambles was because Yuke’s bailed mid-development and threw 2K under the bus on the way out. If I remember correctly again, they claimed that 2K were holding them back from making a truly great wrestling game.
@thinkhector From a business perspective, the PG shift was a master stroke if you’re being objective about the situation. They have far more sponsors and merchandise sales as a result.
@dinosaurfan38 No Time To Die did not do “poorly”. It made nearly $800 million worldwide in an industry still recovering from a pandemic. Then who knows how much more in home video. It was touted as one of the biggest recovery signs for the industry.
@Orokosaki It’s not just gaming. People attack the blockbuster end of the movie industry for constant remakes, despite society as a whole becoming obsessed with glorifying the past by tearing down the present.
For example, go find any old TV clip on YouTube and look at the comments. They’re filled with variants of “all of the TV I watched as a kid was awesome! It’s all terrible now!” It’s all rose-tinted revisionism that the major industries have (quite reasonably) latched onto.
@hypercoyote Money is definitely the bottleneck as far as acquiring any third-party games of genuine reputation. It’s also precisely why Virtual Console had more games. One will involve a lump sum, the other earned a cut per sale. Therefore, Nintendo have to be more conservative for NSO.
@hypercoyote Sorry but I’m not sure what your point is here? Of course the entirety of the SNES library is illegally free to download much quicker than Nintendo makes them available. One has zero financial compensation to consider, while the other has to painstakingly organise deals with publishers. And that’s assuming they’ll all even come to the negotiating table. NSO is hardly a fountain of endless cash for the likes of Square, Capcom and EA.
@SteamEngenius I think you’re a bit confused. EA are the one with all of the licenses for players, stadiums, leagues etc. Any developer partnering with FIFA would quite literally just get the name.
@Torakaka It doesn’t mean that though, does it? “Of all time” in a context like this is referring to everything that came before it. It’s not making any claims about the future. This is grammatical nit-picking of the highest order.
@Silly_G I’m confused, 15-20 games would be fairer for the price of what? Are we still talking about your purchasable collection idea? If so, no company is going to put 15-20 well known games in a retail package for a reasonable price.
@Silly_G A collection of 9 N64 games would either have to be underpriced to try and reach a $60 value or each borderline remade for people to accept a price significantly higher than that.
I can understand some people not liking this expansion but I don’t think a purchasable 9 game collection would be a viable alternative.
@russell-marlow Okay. I’m going to be nice. That’s not how copyright works. Copyright is specifically designed to stop people copying intellectual property or artistic works without permission. While making money from a copy will definitely get you in serious trouble, so will creating a copy without paying for it. And make no mistake, downloading creates a copy. Even if you own the game, you’ve just created a copy of someone else’s game, not your own. You’ve effectively broken the law.
@russell-marlow Absolute nonsense. It’s not legal to download a game from the internet just because “it’s old now”. Else why would copyright extend for 95 years? A simple googling would point out the errors in your argument.
@rjejr PS+ also includes games though. And it’s been known to increase its price without offering anything extra. It’ll also only let you play those games that you collect over time by staying subscribed. You can’t just take the games and forego the online capabilities.
In fairness to the expansion pack, online multiplayer is actually implemented into a fair few of the N64 games as a perk. So you really couldn’t have one without the other.
Incidentally, it turns out you do need PS+ if you want to play PS Now’s PS4 games online. It’s a little convoluted, apparently.
Apologies if I came across as terse. I’m trying to be clear and not needlessly wordy but that can often come across as rude or angry.
@rjejr The Direct specifically said that you can continue to use and subscribe to the basic subscription. That’s why it’s an expansion pack and not a forced price increase.
I have to admit, for all of the “outrage” in the comments for the main article on it, I wasn’t expecting the NSO expansion to come second in the poll. Personally, I’m neutral but leaning towards positive. It depends on the upgrade price.
To be precise, emulators are legal to use for games you own. Merely heading over to Infinite-Nintendo-Roms.com and pocketing a company’s entire library isn’t.
I don’t care what you do, no moral judgments from me. But don’t try acting as if what you’re doing is legally fine.
