Re: Nintendo UK Is Asking For As Much As £180 To Repair Cracked Switch Consoles

JohnQuixote

@McHaggis You're absolutely right of course, in my zealousness to demonstrate the wildly invalid assumption being taken from the poll I used a bit of hyperbole myself. Can we agree then that the real rate of cracking could lie anywhere between 20% and 200/>1000000, and that due to the poor response rate there is actually no way of knowing whether this is a significant issue or not?

@Damo
200 is a lot of positive responses, and I think this story is worth covering. However, there’s a big problem with assuming the problem affects 1 in 5 switches based on the survey. Most people who visit this site didn’t answer the poll, and almost all of these people would likely not have a crack in their machine. On the other hand, almost all people who read the article and do have a crack are likely to have voted “yes” (as there is an emotional incentive to do so). This creates a significant selection bias where people who have an issue are much more likely to respond. It’s a widely recognised issue with survey data. The better estimate would be to divide 200 by the number of people who have actually visited this site/read this article. I have no idea what the NL readership is, but suspect it’s in the order of millions. 200/>1000000 = a very small percentage.

Re: Poll: Is Your Nintendo Switch Cracking Under The Pressure?

JohnQuixote

Further to the point made by @daveh30, there's a big problem with assuming there's any issue at all by having a dozen or so isolated cases for a product that's been sold around 20 million times. If you were to post a picture of a crack on the complete opposite side of the machine and ask if "anyone has had the same problem" I'm sure you could get around the same number of positive replies. If you asked whether anyone has had issues with the console turning off spontaneously, of the rail guard snapping, of the headphone jack not working, or of the machine clearly being possessed by underworld spirits I expect you could get a similar number of positive replies. Unless you have a control group this sounds like bunk. Several of the examples shown in this article don't even show cracks in the same place.

Hey, didn't mean to confuse. I thought you wrote on the Madden NFL thread that you weren't interested in American football unless there were orcs. I thought it was funny that 24-hours later an American football game containing orcs was being discussed in the news. I just wanted to levy your mystical powers to have some other interesting things discussed in the Nintendo news around E3 time.

I frankly have no interest in legally "owning" a game. I play for the immediate joy of playing, tend not to re-visit old titles, am not a collector and have never re-sold a game in my life. If I can rent a title more cheaply than purchasing it I'm happy to do so. If I want to invest in games I'll buy shares in Nintendo (I wish I had during the WiiU days). My main concern is how well the games would play in practice. I live approximately 10 km from the centre of the largest city in Australia, and can't reliably check my email for around one day a fortnight such is the state of telecommunications here.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey Passes The 10 Million Sold Marker

The 12 financial year million-sellers are listed in the Earnings Release referenced at the bottom of the article. I'm too dumb to post the table to the forum, but in addition to the ones listed in the article they are:

Kirby Star Allies (NS) - 1.26 million
MK 7 (3DS) - 1.82 million
New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) - 1.33 million

I wonder how close Skyrim, Doom and Mario + Rabbids were. Also, more people should buy Snipperclips.

Re: Nintendo Download: 5th April (Europe)

@manu0
I did. I just... thought it would be better. Like maybe it would develop a meaningful plot with characters I cared about, and more than 2 discrete foci for binary decision making as the simplest way to produce a game with four possible endings. Take the drugs or don't take the drugs. Sell the drugs or don't sell the drugs. That's about it.

I downloaded Metropolis: Lux Obscura and was entirely underwhelmed. It was only a couple of dollars with use of the rewards program, but I'm still disappointed in myself - apparently I'll play a bad game all day for the simple promise of mammaries.
